  1. Yeah , probably just made some sort of wrong headed assumption that if a design becomes revered , there must be some sort of black magic in the finer constructional details Chances are ill either make k15's again cos i liked em , or Claude's quarter pie as its so straightforward to build. 2. Very interested in the university classic design. Shame some discussions of the correct cabinet geometry ( particularly the throat ) went awry Sent from my LG-H930 using Tapatalk
  3. Altec 515g -hp . available readily to you guys in the states but i don't see many here in the u.k. What to do with them ? Volvotreter straight horn , quarter pie horn , karlson k15 ? Choices choices The seller had a nice set of klipschorns too. First time id heard a pair in a domestic setting. Now wishing i was a master cabinet maker :s. Sent from my LG-H930 using Tapatalk
  4. Well here's my acquisition du jour. Don't know if you chaps would consider that a good price or not , but it's had all the work done to refurb it. I'm in the u.k so I'm used to tiny naim amps with 15wpc so hearing this hooked up to a big pair of tannoys was a bit of a culture shock. It REALLY took them by the scruff of the neck , providing all the finesse i could wish for. But also dynamics that had me ducking for cover at times. Pretty smitten with it and it'll go nicely with something i might be picking up tomorrow Sent from my LG-H930 using Tapatalk
  5. Yes that's true , so only fair to let you have your say. Ill not plunge us into the abyss with any further inflammatory statements. Yes ill absolutely update on the altecs Sent from my LG-H930 using Tapatalk
  6. I think the roof rack idea might see a greater power direct a bolt of lightning in my direction , so current plans are to see if gpa would send me a recone kit so i can have the job done here. Sent from my LG-H930 using Tapatalk
  7. ^ can of worms much :0 I think as a newcomer here I'd rather talk about loudspeakers than politics. Sent from my LG-H930 using Tapatalk
  8. On the +ve . Bill from great plains says he can recone for $145.00 Not sure if this is a new price across the board for 604's or because mine is an iconic 704-8a but I'm happy enough with that. Probably get both done so they're equally fresh in that case. Sent from my Lenovo TAB 2 A10-70F using Tapatalk
  9. well it seems like the consensus is that the cone has crossed rainbow bridge anywaaaaay :s
  10. Thanks for the replies people. Wow thats a bunch cheaper than id imagined. Even factoring in insured shipping from the u.k it may be worth my while. You're probably not missing much avoiding f.b , it allows silly points of view to gather momentum at a scary pace ( like ' you're a transphobic cissexist if you DON'T prefer sex with women who have penises '.... Wait, what ?!? ) Sent from my LG-H930 using Tapatalk
  11. i did wonder if it would shrink back to normal. im getting told reconing isn't as injurious to the wallet as a new driver ( as one might hope )
  12. Ok sorry for the confusingly written original posts. My descriptive ability has clearly been damaged by Facebook , where people only communicate in memes. As above , im appealing for help with a water damaged cone ( i know , why didn't i just say that ?!?)
  13. Not feeling at my most composed or coherent right now , sorry. To explain. The stored drivers ended up with a leaking pipe dripping onto them. You can see the cone is wet and deformed. Im seeking best practice advice to dry it out and i guess an assessment of how likely it is that it'll function correctly afterwards. Thanks
  14. In all sense of the word. ( read this in the voice of lemony snicket , narrator of 'a series of unfortunate events' . might help with empathy ?) O.k so you can see from the meme i have created, to highlight my stupidity and lack of situational awareness, that i have made an ill advised technical modification to a once perfectly decent iconic model 704-8a. I probably deserve to be publicly thrashed with bamboo canes by kendo masters rather than recieve any help. But for those that see fit , what would you do to dry the cone and hopefully help it regain its shape? Wish id modge podged them prior to putting in storage. I am le sigh
  15. Nor me , as a johnny come lately. would be a tremendous shame if interpersonal frictions stopped the sharing of knowledge :S Apologies if that comes across as a little self serving, given i've expressed an interest in building a set of these. #peace
  16. Just out of curiosity , what is it about the c15w spec wise that isn't available in other drivers ? Or is it just a case that they hit on something magical with their formula for it? Is the evm15l still in production? Evm12 seems available here ( europe ) but only crusty looking used p.a 15l's :s Sent from my LG-H930 using Tapatalk
  17. For sure , decent c15w would be unobtanium here. I've a vague feeling another poster said in another thread that the kappa 15c didn't model well In the classic. I need to brush up on horn response I think. Got a mini DSP nano to play with once I've decided what I'm doing Sent from my Lenovo TAB 2 A10-70F using Tapatalk
  18. Amazing thread. Had been curious about this cabinet for a while so I'm super grateful for ajsons and the other contributor's for demistifying those sketchy old plans. Although I'm sure twin evm12ls would be pretty spectacular, that runs me about £1000.00 in the u.k. Any other driver recommendations? Wondering if the eminence kappa 15c that Claude recommends for his quarter pie is suitable * Or for a few dollars more -> http://www.precision-devices.com/Product-Details/PD153ER ? Thanks (* That's another cab I'm wanting to try out if it'll fit well enough in my small room ) Sent from my Lenovo TAB 2 A10-70F using Tapatalk
  19. Are you intending to build one? Must be curious after working on the drawings The Dean appealed to me as it's quite a handsome cabinet , fitting neatly into corners without intruding too far out into the room. But as stated , I'm less than confident about my cabinetry skills for that one. Seems hard to go wrong with the q.pie given its straightforward design and a helpful forum including the designer himself and other builders. Build cost looks very reasonable too. 20. Thats definately a big attraction of the design* ( in conjunction with the expected performance ) . what is the go to method for a nice neat curve on the mouth section? Router on a 4 ft radius arm ? * though about making a university classic dean. But it doesn't seem to measure better and then there's so much opportunity for failiure with all those angles to cut ( and sketchy plans ) Sent from my LG-H930 using Tapatalk
  21. Wish i had lovely cabinet making skills. Anything i make is going to look 'budget p.a' :s Sent from my LG-H930 using Tapatalk
  22. Interesting post. I guess i could run them in a smallish box or open baffle above the qpies while im fashioning the other horns i mentioned. Wouldn't sell. Im in the u.k so its that bit harder to come across items like them again. The eminence driver you mention is easily and cheaply available so im happy to follow your suggestion there ( i did once ring eminence and at the time they were happy to sell me k33's too ) thanks. Sent from my LG-H930 using Tapatalk
  23. Better than an altec 604-8g? ( which i already have) ( i can sure make something else with those if so ) Sent from my LG-H930 using Tapatalk
  24. I LIKE it . thanks Claude , appreciate the input. Sent from my LG-H930 using Tapatalk
  25. Man cave melancholy :- hi Claude , firstly thanks for offering your interesting design free to diy'ers. Would you be kind enough to consider if i have a workable option. The problem is my new listning room. It really is a cave. 7ft 5 wide , 8 high , 10ft 5 long. I have sketched ( horribly ) a few possible orientations . Width ways on the floor would mean trimming a few inches of the tips of the mouth. Any issues here with each channel essentially firing directly into the other one ? ( would a central divider/reflector make any sense? ) Below the q pie operating range im looking at either bill fitz table tuba ls in corners or the lab12 design you have posted. Above will be a fane studio8m in the pi midhorn and an altec 288 in a tractrix. I've altec 604 to use in the qpie or if its not practical in my room a set of karlson k15's as i do likw that karlson kick. These are all parts i have to hand. Just wish i had a bigger room Regards Gary Sent from my LG-H930 using Tapatalk
