There is no need to get the dimensions exact down to the last 1/64". Even at 1 kHz, the wavelength is still over a foot. So as long as dimensional errors are kept to fractions of an inch (even fairly large fractions of an inch), everything will be OK.
Yeah , probably just made some sort of wrong headed assumption that if a design becomes revered , there must be some sort of black magic in the finer constructional details :D
Chances are ill either make k15's again cos i liked em , or Claude's quarter pie as its so straightforward to build.

Here's a couple of ideas. In both cases the response of a Klipschorn with K33 is in gray.

Very interested in the university classic design. Shame some discussions of the correct cabinet geometry ( particularly the throat ) went awry :(

  3. Altec 515g -hp . available readily to you guys in the states but i don't see many here in the u.k.
What to do with them ? Volvotreter straight horn , quarter pie horn , karlson k15 ? Choices choices :D
The seller had a nice set of klipschorns too. First time id heard a pair in a domestic setting. Now wishing i was a master cabinet maker :s. 1c55b62ca057c61ba1619bb3af4829b2.jpg

  4. Well here's my acquisition du jour.
Don't know if you chaps would consider that a good price or not , but it's had all the work done to refurb it. I'm in the u.k so I'm used to tiny naim amps with 15wpc so hearing this hooked up to a big pair of tannoys was a bit of a culture shock. It REALLY took them by the scruff of the neck , providing all the finesse i could wish for. But also dynamics that had me ducking for cover at times. Pretty smitten with it and it'll go nicely with something i might be picking up tomorrow :) 44a2db6b24181929b93151d52bb33f67.jpg

  5. Right, but you did bring some topics up that were bound to be responded to.
If you do get the work done with Great Plains let us know how it all goes.
Yes that's true , so only fair to let you have your say. Ill not plunge us into the abyss with any further inflammatory statements.

Yes ill absolutely update on the altecs

  6. England is in the midst of a PC overthrow of what made them great. Your own people like the childless May who do not care about the future are selling you down the river and I don't understand the passive attitude which is allowing all this to happen. I read that Churchill is being censored now because of the truth he spoke about the Arabs being imported into England in wholesale lots. I fear for your country and see no peaceful way out as rational people have sat on their hands too long and now they must fight or lose England and they were silly enough to give up their guns so they are in heap big trouble.
^ can of worms much :0

I think as a newcomer here I'd rather talk about loudspeakers than politics.

  7. Great Plains Audio is staffed with people from the old Altec company. They bought a lot of the old production setup and do re-coning to the original specs. I was quoted I think $115 to get some 15" woofers done + shipping both ways. I would think they could do duplexes to so give them a shout. I don't see a way for you to ever get those back into proper shape and would not even try.
So Facebook uses a subset of the English language as a rule? Never joined and not seeing any incentive to do so and feed the Zuckerberg privacy invasion machine.
Thanks for the replies people. Wow thats a bunch cheaper than id imagined. Even factoring in insured shipping from the u.k it may be worth my while.

You're probably not missing much avoiding f.b , it allows silly points of view to gather momentum at a scary pace ( like ' you're a transphobic cissexist if you DON'T prefer sex with women who have penises '.... Wait, what ?!? )

Hard to tell from the pictures but if the cone is warped and swelled I have great doubts about it being salvageable..... sorry for your loss 🙁

    miketn

i did wonder if it would shrink back to normal. im getting told reconing isn't as injurious to the wallet as a new driver ( as one might hope )

I don’t think anyone has any idea what in the hell you're talking about.

Not feeling at my most composed or coherent right now , sorry.

To explain. The stored drivers ended up with a leaking pipe dripping onto them. You can see the cone is wet and deformed. Im seeking best practice advice to dry it out and i guess an assessment of how likely it is that it'll function correctly afterwards.

    Thanks

  10. In all sense of the word.

( read this in the voice of lemony snicket , narrator of 'a series of unfortunate events' . might help with empathy ?)

O.k so you can see from the meme i have created,  to highlight my stupidity and lack of situational awareness, that i have made an ill advised technical modification to a once perfectly decent iconic model 704-8a.

I probably deserve to be publicly thrashed with bamboo canes by kendo masters rather than recieve any help. But for those that see fit , what would you do to dry the cone and hopefully help it regain its shape?

Wish id modge podged them prior to putting in storage. I am le sigh :(

Nor me , as a johnny come lately. would be a tremendous shame if interpersonal frictions stopped the sharing of knowledge :S

Apologies if that comes across as a little self serving, given i've expressed an interest in building a set of these. #peace

  12. Just out of curiosity , what is it about the c15w spec wise that isn't available in other drivers ? Or is it just a case that they hit on something magical with their formula for it?

Is the evm15l still in production? Evm12 seems available here ( europe ) but only crusty looking used p.a 15l's :s

  13. I'm that friend and while there's nothing like the C15w the delta pro wasn't too shabby though it did have to much voice (voice as in bright vocals/ typical guitar speaker). I've wondered if a fancy electronic crossover with a steep slope could compensate but the simplicity of the first order three way crossover is nice and simple.
For sure , decent c15w would be unobtanium here. I've a vague feeling another poster said in another thread that the kappa 15c didn't model well In the classic. I need to brush up on horn response I think.

Got a mini DSP nano to play with once I've decided what I'm doing

  14. Amazing thread. Had been curious about this cabinet for a while so I'm super grateful for ajsons and the other contributor's for demistifying those sketchy old plans.

Although I'm sure twin evm12ls would be pretty spectacular, that runs me about £1000.00 in the u.k.

    Any other driver recommendations?
Wondering if the eminence kappa 15c that Claude recommends for his quarter pie is suitable *

    Or for a few dollars more -> http://www.precision-devices.com/Product-Details/PD153ER ?

    Thanks

(* That's another cab I'm wanting to try out if it'll fit well enough in my small room )
