  1. I just want to be clear on what you just said because I've asked this question before, I could just take the jumpers off of my rf 7's and use my av receiver to drive the lows and use the L&R pre outs to go to another amplifier that would drive the highs?
  2. I would suggest putting the meter back in the box and just adjusting everything by your ear, and I don't mean that in any smart *** way at all, it all comes down to what you want to hear and the meters don't mean anything.
  3. Somewhere between 5W and 500W, depending on what your interests are. Both extremes are represented here, as well as the "I don't care, I just play the music" viewpoint, in which case any old amp will do. "Driven properly" has to have some context. Trying to recreate a ballpark rock concert? Trying to elicit the maximum detail, texture and nuance? Those will require different amps. I understand and appreciate your response, so it's time to get detailed. My listening room is 13x22 with 8' ceilings. I've got hardwood floors and no heavy furniture or curtains to effect the sound in a negative way. Regarding what my expectations are when listening to music I would have to say that I'm trying to reproduce the same sound as a small jazz bar with an elevated stage and equipment that will sound just as accurate at very low intimate levels, as it will when you just want to zone out and fall into the music. I want the music to sound like you are sitting in a totally dead sound room with accomplished musicians, I want the bass to hit you hard and then be gone without any trace of distortion, unlike the idiots that run around with bass that is nothing but distortion and they think that it sonds good. To me the difference in listening to music and watching a great HD movie comes down to sound effects and the feel and has nothing to do with the music. If none of that makes sense, it's because I'm listning to music.
  4. I haven't had the opportunity to listen to any of the older Klipsch speakers but looking forward to doing that when I can. My main goal at this point is to try and power what I have properly (my RF 7's) and deciding between used or new, ss or tube or bi amping the 7's with tubes on top and ss for the lows and with tube gear, just how many watts will these take to be driven properly. I appreciate the suggestions.
  5. Good topic with no answer, unless there's some way to arrange for hundreds of speakers to be listened to in the same room with the same equipment and even if that were possible, there will still be many different opinions based on what you like, but when it all comes down to it, that's all that matters. What you like.
  6. I'll drink to that because really when it's all said and done, it's all about me and what I like to listen to, but it's nice to have a place to get some opinions regarding different combo's and past experience.
  7. Still laughing, now that's the type of smart *** response that I was really looking for. I would like to visit the Jamison "Still" because I really think given enough time there I could really find the answers to all of my questions.
  8. That question is above my pay grade however, I can honestly say that I'll respect any man who checks into or out of a hotel carrying his pink pillow and Cleveland Browns jacket.....
  9. Good Evening To All! This will be like a book, not a short read, but a series of questions, that I'm sure many of you have asked, researched and may still be searching for the answers. I'm so happy to be back in the hunt for the perfect sound, that after I bleed out, I'm sure all of these questions will be answered..LMAO with the sharp piece of glass laying on the coffee table, just kidding. The following is a list of questions that just confuse me, as well as drain the bank account, that I just can't seem to get a solid answer to, so please feel free to give me the answer or just add to the list as we are all on the same journey. 1. How can an amp be worth 5 or 10 or 20K, what are you freeking nuts, look at the components. 2. Should I go tube or ss? If I go tube; should I build my own, or buy from China so I don't speand the 5 to 20K and get really stupid. 3. Should I combine the tube and solid state to drive the lower(ss) and upper(tube) end of the speakers? 4. How can Emotiva, produce such wonderful amps (ss) for so much less than everyone else? 5. Can 20 watts of clean tube power really drive my RF 7's better than (ss); and if they can, why in the hell can't someone make these ratings compatable? 6. How can a cd player cost 11K? It's just the stupid creaping in again? 7. Is there a digital media player that will convert cd, sacd, mp3, dvd and any other combo, with finess covering the demads of the audiophile and HT nut? 8. Are silver wires really worth the money? 9. Why would you purchase a tube cd player if the digital to analog conversion takes place in the receiver or pre amp? What do the tubes do? 10. Should I buy a quality DAC and where do I put it? 11. I found a tube conditioner that can be placed in multiple locations to smooth out the digital signal for 200.00, sounds like a deal, I should buy 2 of them. 12. Is Dean G. really a god? If you read this Dean, I really mean that with all the respect in the world and will be sending you my crossovers from the RF 7's. 13. If I buy Kevlar, composit, crystal, graphite, super secret material, isolation feet that are configured in different geometric shapes, will the world stop spinning on its axis and the sound be better? 14. I want to have a digital (audiophile quality) hard drive jukebox so what should I use? (there's about 2 million opinions on that one Helter Skelter) 15. Why didn't Youthman (You're a good guy and this is just for fun), put a vibrating bed in the movie room for porn? 16. You're still laughing so go to question 17 17. Why do people tend to pay more on E-Bay for used equipment then they can buy new stuff for? 18. Why don't more people go with 6.1 and hang a really big speaker on the rear wall? 19. Why did Klipsch stop building the RF 7 line????????????? Wanted to change the look????????????????? 20. If you have read everything to this point, you are either a true audiophile or a wannabee, and in either case, your input is appreciated. 21. Jamison Irish Whisky is really good on the rocks...................................Rock On!
  10. If all the wires will be hidden by the entertainment center, and it appears that they will, who cares, leave them where they are.
  11. A couple of ways to approach the wire deal if you really want to clean it up. If you leave the wires coming through the ceiling you can do a drop detail in the ceiling that would finish out just above the height of the custom entertainment system and it would add another dimensional detail to the room. The second thing you could consider is cutting out some sections of drywall and actually getting the wires run in the rear wall (it's just drywall, mud and paint). The third thing to consider, and I believe someone metioned something similar, would be to build two symetrical details (options are only limited to what you like and what you want to spend.) as chases to get the wires where you want them.
  12. You should have enough room and Onkyo will tell you in the manual that it will produce heat but I would suggest a very small inexpensive fan to move air and keep things cooler, but I've always been of the opinion that heat and dust kill electronics IMO
  13. I've owned alot of Onkyo gear, TX 805 is the most current and I have no complaints, if fact I was looking at the same 905 on e-bay, just to get a few more watts of power, which is going to be the biggest difference in the receivers. I don't think for that amount of money you will find much better in new equipment. If you haven't owned Onkyo equipment in the past, just know that you need to set it up where it has proper ventilation, I even run a small fan behind the receiver to keep things cool, as they run very hot.
  14. It was only a contact high, I didn't really sniff.
  15. I just had the same thing happen and ordered a botlle of glue from e-bay that looked like the same thing that was sold on partsexpress for speaker repair, it was just a few bucks cheaper. I removed the entire dust cap and glued it back on and the speaker is fine. FYI, this was my first dust cap repair and I don't claim to know anything about properly repairing speakers, but I did sleep at a holiday inn express. If someone can give some more technical advice, then I will be reading it also, but this worked for me and it sounds fine.
  16. OK, so you have a choice to go out and purchase a new Emotiva XPA 3 or 5 lay out 600-800 bucks, the one question that I've asked before and I'll ask again, is can you get more for the money buying a used amp that is in perfect working order and if so, what used amps would be in the running?
  17. Thanks Wuzzer, that worked just fine and sounds much better.
  18. I'm running all 12 guage wire and they're only 7' runs. Thanks
  19. I'm sorry I didn't find your post before this or I would have gotten involved. I've been building for 20 years and I'm a finatic about decks, and though there are times where you can do substituitions for various beams and joists, they all have to be based on load calculations and common sense and I hope your builder gave you info. to support the change, let me know if this whole thing is done or if you're still dealing with it and I'll try and provide fair information. Pete
  20. Thanks for taking the time. That's what I thought, but I've been out of the game for a while and Quad was hot when I did this in the past, and now there's just a lot more stuff. The only follow up comment regarding this is that if I wire it straight forward as you both agree is the best, I can't run the RF 7's on full signal and I believe they sound better when they're set that way, it cuts the sub out?????????????????? Thanks Again, Pete
  21. I have a velodyne 1215 and I want to wire it into the system to produce the best results. My main speakers are RF 7's and I'm running everything with an Onkyo TX 805. Should I just keep it wired up straight from the back of the receiver (single rca out) and they y it into the Velodyne or should I then come out of the sub and feed the RF 7's and use the crossover in the sub? I do have the ability to change the signal that is going to the RF 7's through the Onkyo from full range on up, so I'm not sure if using the sub to send the signal will do anything to improve the quality of the sound. I mainly listen to audio and occasionaly some movies but my main concern is the audio quality. I would also like to ask if there is any reason to bi wire or bi amp the RF 7's. I have looked through as many of these threads to try and find the definitive answer to some of these questions but haven't found what I'm looking for. 22. I appreciate the info. I'm starting the hunt and will have to see what it turns up. I'm going to take a trip tothe svs facility and take a listen to their subs, I didn't even know that they're built about 35 minutes from my house.
