  1. I'm currently running the Marantz SR8200 & absolutely love the 2 channel it produces. Such a warm match for Cornwall's! Bypassing the digital filters is a MUST! Always use the 2 channel direct mode. Regards, Disco Stu
  2. Bummer about the damage. I had a speaker doamged in shipping. Only cpsmetic though. Turned out that UPS paid me the insured value & I kept the speaker. Makes a fine center channel for my Klipsh heritage system. No doubt an insurance claim is in order. Assuming you purchased insurance. Good luck. Just be patient. The end result should be fine. Regards, Stu
  3. Definitely use your best speakers for mains. Surrounds provide mostly ambient sound anyway.
  4. "THX SHMEE...H....X", that's what I always say. Total agreement with Boa on the whole crap. Regards, Stu f>------------------ '81 Cornwall 1 mains B2 Crossover '73 Heresy Centre '78 Heresy Surrounds Paradigm PW2200 Sub Subwoofer Marantz SR8000 AV Receiver Hitachi 53" RPTV 53SBX59B
  5. It looks to me that your environment dictates those rear speaker placements. Ideally they would be a foot or 2 behind the couch firing at each other. Try angling them in at different degrees to see what sounds best. Sorry I can't comment on the RS3's compatibility without knowledge of your other components. 6. Yeesh....how did guns become a topic in the 2 channel forum? People actually feel compelled to carry weapons? What a sad reflection on society that is!!!! For those in the great white north this is not an issue eh. I kinda like the fact that murders here are actually reported in the news (front page). I can't imagine the anxiety people live with that causes them to feel "safe" only when packing heat. When society gets to that point.......well you have to question why and how. It's really sad. 7. You have to check out the Marantz line of receivers. Hiss is a foreign word...I mean these are SILENT. It's really quite amazing. The SR8000 might be a bit pricy for your budget but give the SR7000 a listen in direct mode to bypass all the digital filtering. They compliment the heritage line very well musically and don't take a back seat for Ht either. 8. "Good thing it wasn't a Heresy -- your thumb would have gone right through the paper driver." HA HA HA HA HA HA HA .................!!!! Dean: Some people might suggest you have some kind of complex about the Heritage line (certainly not me). The reference series with their "New Technologies" are fine speakers. Your speculation on the paper fibre cones is just that, merely speculation. I can say with some certainty the Heresy cone, unlike the Reference series, certainly don't crease by merely rubbing your thumb on them as Crash indicated. It's just a crease though so don't sweat it. 9. Used Hersy's are a great value and make fine HT speakers. Having said that, you will find a sub is a must unless you use them strictly as a center and surrounds and they are matched with capable mains (Cornwalls ). They can in fact be used quite nicely as a center channel. Simply set it on it's side and voila. 10. Talon: I'm no electrical engineer nor "expert" at much that audio involves. It's my understanding that moving twice as much air results in a 6db gain. Add a second sub and you do move twice as much air (which is of course how sound is generated). You are correct that doubling the power to a speaker or speakers results in only a 3db gain. 11. VINTAGE Klipsch RULES! JBL ShmayBL....Seriuously look into some vintage Klipsch. Yes the quality of the 70's and earlier is still evedent in these beauties and the sound quality is nothing short of ....... 12. I own a single PW2200 and price was a consideration also being from Canada. I can say with some certainty that the PW2200 is no garbage can. The bass is tight and musical yet has the range for effective HT. A second PW220 will increase the output by 6db. That may not sound like much but is actually quite substantial. Certainly the SVS line is no slouch and does not take a back seat to the PW2200, however, for the money you just can't even come close to the PW2200 and their output will rival the SVS. 13. You'll be hard pressed to match Marantz for music. This especially true when matched with Klipsch speakers. Having said that you should actually listen to the receiver in your own environment before you make up your mind. It boils down to what "YOU" like. Sorry but there is no MAGIC answer. 14. HornEd: You comments regarding working outside the "rules" as dictated by the listening environment are absolutely true and well taken. They are guidelines only and sometimes need to be bent. 16. OK $2,000 for speakers? If you don't mind affording the room you'll need for them, how about this? Remember this is well under $2,000. 1 - Mains - Cornwall 1's - $800 -$1,000 (Ebay or local if lucky)Something from the mid 70's or so. Alnico magnets and Type B crossover. OOOOH Ya!!!! 2 - Centre - Heresy (1) - $175 - $225 From the same vintage as mains. 3 - Surrounds - Heresy's (2) - $375 - $450 (pair) Same vintage as above. Another option is to go with a complete Heresy system. It won't kick butt like the Cornwall mains but will take less room, cost less and will be no slouch. These are used...yes used, but don't let that turn you off. The 70's heritage Klipsch line is very VERY arguably better than anything they now offer new. The horn loaded mid makes all the difference. 17. Here is some great info I ran across some time ago: "Listed below are the "DO's" and "DONT's" of speaker placement for your 5.1 Surround System. While some of them may seem trivial, you would be surprised how many people get them wrong. The Don't's: 1) Do not place the front speakers further apart than the distance between the listening position and midway between the speakers. Doing so may result in poor imaging and soundstage. 2) Do not place bass reflex speakers with rear firing ports in closed inwall units or entertainment centers. Doing so will undermine the function of the port and result in weak and/or boomy bass. 3) Do not place bookshelf speakers on the floor or in corners of the room. Doing so may result in poor imaging, compromised soundstage, and boomy bass. 4) Do not place large speakers in corners of the room. Excessive standing bass waves from the acoustic coupling between the two walls may result in artificially bloated or boomy bass. 5) Surround Speaker Placement: A) Do not place surround speakers on the floor if the tweeter is below ear level. Doing so will result in a muffled surround field that may sound too attenuated and unnatural. Do not place the center channel speaker on the floor. The same reasoning from #5A above applies here. 6) Do not place your subwoofer close to your listening position if the cut off frequency is above 40Hz. Bass frequencies above 40Hz are perceived as directional by the human ear. Placing the subwoofer close to the listening position will result in bass that is easily localized by your ear. 7) Do not place "Cubed" speakers in your listening room. Instead, either bring return them for cash or use them as cup holders because there is no magical placement that can make these speakers sound musical or realistic. The Do's: 1) As a rule place the front speakers apart by about 80% of the distance between the midway and listening position. For example: If your listening position is located 10 feet away from the front speakers, place the front speakers about 8 feet apart. 2) Allow sufficient space between the rear of the speakers and the back wall. Bass reflex speakers require sufficient airflow (6-8 inches) to allow proper port tuning. 3) Place bookshelf speakers on rigid stands that are tall enough to position the tweeter at ear level from the listening position for optimal imaging. 4) Avoid corner placement as it may muffle sound and boast standing bass waves. Usually 10-12 inches away from corner walls is adequate for placement of loudspeakers to minimize these effects. 5) Rear speakers should be placed slightly above ear level and behind the listening position to maximize the soundfield and minimize the tendency for them to act like a point source. 6) Place your subwoofer in accordance to our Subwoofer Placement Guidelines (http://audioholics.com/tip1.htm) for optimal performance . Usually the best blend between the main speakers and the subwoofer occurs when the sub is located somewhere midway between the main speakers in a slightly recessed position. 7) Enjoy your system with friends and family once everything is tweaked for optimal performance" Regards, Stu f>------------------ '81 Cornwall 1 mains B2 Crossover '73 Heresy Centre '78 Heresy Surrounds Paradigm PW220 Sub Subwoofer Marantz SR8000 AV Receiver Hitachi 53" RPTV 53SBX59B
  18. mdeneen: It's perched with the old style PWK emblem atop my T.V. in all it's glory. The damaged corner courtesy of UPS is not noticeable without close inspection and this old beauty is a great match for my Cornwall mains. 19. Chris: No question there are people who are well spoken, thoughtful and respectfull of others and their opinions (most are). On the other hand there are a few abrasive, boastfull asses who's contributions, although plentiful are not welcomed by many. I don't want to mention any names here and I think you all know of a few of the types to whom I'm referring. For the most part everyone is helpful, respectful and thoughtful. You have to learn to consider the source when reading some responses. 20. George: My Knowledge on the subject started on this board and is limited to my own particular receiver/sub combination. I'll be happy to help in any way I can, however, I'm not a guru on the subject. To be honest this is one of the most complex steps in any setero setup. It's almost overwelming at first. Try some searches on the subject and check out this short cut to my first question. http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum8/HTML/000706.html Boa12 helped me a lot initially and is a very good source. The info posted above and related links are the best, most concise and complete information I've run across. Good luck & have fun. 21. Sorry, I forgot to comment on the hiss thing. Most definitely a product of a poor amp. I can only speak for my Marantz SR8000. It's inredibily qiuet even when mated with super efficient Cornwalls. It's really quite remarkable. 22. I must agree with Seb, the Quintets are something less than Klipsch's best line. Having said that they're probably good value for the money (you'll ghet what you pay for). You might consider some used (that's right used) Heresy speakers. Get 5 or 6 of them. One centre channel, two mains, and two surrounds. Make sure they're all of the same vintage so the drivers and crossovers are identical. This will insure a perfect tonal match. They can be had relativley cheap and will kick the %$#@ out of any Quitet system. Mate them with a decent sub and YAHOO....hold on to you chair!!! Just my humble yet oh so correct opinion Regards,. 23. Larry: Another option is to set the speakers to large and as you suggest, "piggy back" the sub to the main outs. Set the crossover to take over where your mains roll off. Adjust the volume of the sub to blend and not overpower your mains and voila, great two channel audio with a sub taking over for the low end (where it belongs). 24. Define cheap. If you want a sub for $200 or thereabouts, I'd suggest you won't get much of a sub at all. More like a woofer, maybe. Remeber a Sub needs to extend below the frequencty of a woofer to be a true "SUB" woofer (below 30 hz for instance). It should do so with autority and not rolling off at 30 hz. The answer to your question will vary for many people. To me a "decent" sub is one that goes well with good mains. Cornwalls or the like will need a Paradigm PW2200 or higher to qualify. Lesser speakers may require something less. Sorry I couldn't give you a more definite answer.
