  1. clermontcop, nice looking Heresys! I was wondering how your glue problem was coming along. Post pics when they are "reborn into a beauty" [:D]

Ocnorb, did you make grilles of your own design or use a Heresy grille as a template? I haven't made grilles before or recovered existing, but the challenge is intriguing. Don't know if I'm going to change the crossover yet - want to listen more. I guess being 32 years old I should consider it.

  2. Very nice Noah! That Teak is a very different and elegant look. Please post a picture with them assembled and ready to rock.

That's all the stamp of approval I need to repair and veneer mine. Won't happen too soon. Have to wait a bit for the wallet to expand (they do that on their own, don'tcha know).

I've never looked for veneer of this size before. Can I ask you and others here where I can find some veneer of different kinds? There is a place close to me, Woodcraft, who have veneer in large rolls with heat-activated adhesive on one side. I'll go and see if their dimensions will work. Should I also check Ebay?

  3. Hope these pictures post well. So the Decorators didn't have grilles - very cool. They look rough and I'm not sure about veneering over what is there. Would it be sacrilege veneering over the birch?

Noah, there isn't a label on the backs saying HD-BR or HD-BL. In addition to the serial numbers on the back, there is 'OD' and 'USA' stamped along the vertical backsides of both speakers. The seller said they were birch poly, but looking them up they only came in birch raw or laquer. They feel laquered - or maybe 32 years of wear on raw wood gives this 'laquer' feel, heh. The chips/dents are lighter in color, so it must be laquer.

  4. Purchased for $175. Serial # 51S957 & 8. Puts it at '78 right? I can post more pictures soon. They don't have grilles or any evidence of having them. Any thoughts on this?

Finally I'll be able to hear the Heresy sound (in an as/is condition) -- I've read so much about them here. Gotta do a few things first, THEN I can listen.

  5. Hiya all. My Forte IIs purchased last month are rough to the touch except for the risers, which are smooth. Nothing extreme like peeling or delaminating...just dry. I've read some old threads dealing with Oiled Oak maintenance but none (so far) deal with a raised grain feel and what to do. Should I sand until smooth, then apply Watco or other oil of choice? Or do you think just oiling alone would suffice?

  6. The only high end place the comes to mind around here is no more. Salon One Audio. Was located in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. A series of listening rooms packed with stuff. Casual environment with the salespeople just as excited as you to listen on various gear. I think the owner's name was Bruce (or Bill?). My memory......

  7. Has anyone put a protective grill on the passive radiator? (why?/why not?)

Depends on who's travelling through your listening/home theater room. With your Chorus IIs away from the wall and children around (friend's kids every so often) I'd consider protection. Here are some grilles from SpeakerWorks.com that have a tighter mesh style than Parts Express: http://www.speakerworks.com/15_inch_black_steel_speaker_grills_p/sgm15.htm

I've used 8" grilles of this style on a pair of KG 3.5s and they worked well. Once installed there are no visible screw heads around the woofer, and the grille can be easily removed (friction fit) for woofer viewing. Neat.

  8. Hello all,

I recently bought an HK730, knowing the left channel isn't working. Opened it up and noticed the pair of fuses for the left channel were blown. After replacing the fuses the left channel works but music is accompanied by static similar to a dirty LP. It's a hiss with a few crackles and pops here and there. Don't worry, I'm using a free, very old and nasty Marantz speaker from a garage sale, didn't even come as a pair. Even with the volume down and balance to the right channel, the left still makes a hiss.

Now you have the background, here is my question: Is this the correct spray cleaner, or should I use Deoxit from Parts Express?

Hopefully a good cleaning will soothe the savage channel.

  9. Heat sometimes works in allowing the glue to be removed. Try a hair dryer on low....warm the glue and try to roll it off with you fingers. If you are comfortable with a sharp chisel, the glue can be removed that way sometimes. There may be some residue color left in the wood.

Solvents like Acetone or Denatured Alcohol sometimes work, but they also break down the finish underneath so it's hard to recommend one.
