  1. I'm thinking this weekends game against the Giants will be the test. What team is playing better than those guys in blue from New York? Will the Saints go 6-0 again this year? I don't think so. I suspect Eli and the Giants will get it done. That said, I'd love it if the Saints did win.

  2. It appears the high impedance problem is usually associated with the RCA type connections. In my case the RTR machine has only XLR connections for audio. Thats where I have the high impedance at 100K ohms. There are no RCA connections on this machine.

I guess I will have to try reverse engineering a pair of those MIC transformers.

  3. Hey, thanks for the help. To be clear this reel to reel machine has switches for the inputs. Line and MIC are my two choices. When switched to line its a 100K ohm impedance and when on MIC its a 600 ohm. The preamp I'm using has tape out which is 500ohm if that helps any.

Looking at the transformer offerings, none I have found will handle the 100K ohm side of the problem.

When I switch the RTRs input switches to "MIC" the gain is very high but also the sound is muffled and not right. When I switch to "Line" it sounds like good quality but the gain is too low for any use. Weird.

  4. My goodness. I found this on the net. Not sure what to do at this point.

"Alternatively, a dedicated line level input was sometimes provided,
with an impedance of about 100k. Now a different problem reared its
ugly head, for audio cable can easily have a shunt capacitance of 100pF
per metre. A standard 1.5m length cable would have a shunt capacitance
that would cause more than a 6dB drop at 15kHz relative to low
frequencies, which is not a good thing for a hi-fi interconnecting
    system."
  5. Well I finally got my RTR hooked up today and tried to record with it. I've not got something right. I suspect it might be the cables I'm using. When I monitor the line level input at the RTR machine is too low. I can hear the signal with my headphones on but its just too low. For input I'm using XLR to RCA cables without transformers. Now I know some of these XLR to RCA cables have transformers in them. I suspect I need the transformers due to an impedance mismatch maybe?

When I switch from "line" to "mic" the volume goes much higher but the music doesn't sound too good as expected. Any ideas?

The manual says that Line in is 100K unbalanced impedance

Mic in is 600 Ohm balanced.

  6. Hey Greg, I remember reading that Sergei lives in Russia and that you have visited him there. How did you ever meet and befriend Sergei?

On these RTR machines and tapes. Is there a chart out there that shows which tapes share the same bias characteristics? Like I know that my machine likes Ampex Grand Master 456 and also 406. But are there others that share the same bias as those tapes?

  7. Or you could look at this way. If you were to sell your used unit now for $1000.00 bucks, then what? You have had it for 8 months. $1500 difference/8 = $180 approx. expense per month for the pleasure of owning the thing. So it could be worse. Geeze, for that amount you could have gone to the theatre and had popcorn twice a week.

  8. LG too I'm afraid "cutting production by 70,000 units per year from now on"

There’s something rotten in the state of LG. It seems the Korean
manufacturer is having some trouble offloading its plasma TVs, with
sales last February down some $35 million compared to the previous
year. To be fair, it does appear to be a general trend in the TV
industry, with LCDs being cheaper to produce at larger and larger
sizes. (It used to be that LCDs larger than 42 inches were
prohibitively expensive. Starting at that size, you usually went with
plasma.) So LG will cut plasma production by 70,000 units per year from
    now on.

Somewhat related is that, of the plasmas it will produce, LG will be
making them smaller for the Chinese market. The sweet spot seems to be
sets in the 30-inch range, something the company expects to take off in
anticipation of next year’s Olympics in Beijing.

  9. They are here to stay? You might want to check with these guys to mention just a few.[:)]

  10. Supposedly plasma is well on its way out. Production on this type tv sharply down. The up and coming technology is LED. If in the market I would look at these tvs too. I noticed that BB has a couple in stock now.

Some in my family have the Sony 46" 120hz flat panel lcd and we have really enjoyed it with no problems.

  11. I bought 3 of the tapes listed in the Ebay auction below to try out with my machine (Ampex ATR-700). Yes, its a crap shoot I suspect. Tape condition unknown, tape bias who knows, etc. But I figured for $20 bucks including shipping for the 3 loaded reels it was worth the gamble! The recommended tape for my machine is the AMPEX 456 Grand Master but I have read in previous threads that these tapes suffer from physical ailments. I undersand that 406 is also a good choice, but where to get? Anybody bought tapes like these off Ebay with any success?

  12. I have been investigating this too having just purchased a 1/2 track 7.5 and 15ips machine. My Ampex ATR700 specs at 40 to 18khz on 15ips.

Most prerecorded tapes still out there are on 1/4 track unfortunately, but the higher quality recording capability is with the 1/2 track. To buy prerecorded 1/2 track material is crazy expensive. So, that kinda leaves you with recording your own stuff on a 1/2 track at 15ips for high quality audio.

Here is one I want to know. Can I use any 1/4" audio tape in my 1/2 track machine and make proper recordings on it? IE: can I use a previously recorded 1/4 track tape, erase it, and make a 1/2 track recording on it?

  13. Thanks for the offer Groomlake but no need for it I suspect. After much study, I have decided that I will record one album with this machine at 15ips. for a quality test. If it performs well then more recordings may follow. If it performs poorly I will probably pass it on. Thought I might find a nice Jazz tape on Ebay at 15ips but nar a one did I find. The guys at www.tapeproject.com are recording suitable material for it but unfortunately those are out of my price range. In the end I suspect what we really have here is another audio hole to pour money into.

  14. Some of you might remember this thread: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/p/124150/1254870.aspx#1254870

Where I was looking at a reel to reel machine that ended up being 4 track. Well I bought the Ampex today off Craigslist for cheap and it seems like a real nice machine. I know it does 7 1/2 and 15 ips on tape speed. Its a 2 track 2 channel machine. Looks like all the prerecorded tapes are 1/4 track? Sounded real good at the guys house where I bought it. Tape counter is the only problem? It does't work, but I did get the operation/service manual! So maybe I can get it going.

Anybody know anything about this machine?

  15. Predicting SB teams this early is like trying to predict the BCS teams. No wait, forgive me, nothing is that screwed up.

Apparently there are alot of crappy teams in the NFL this year. I mean really, the Bengals are even having a winning season.

There is alot of football left to play and the Saints are doing well but doesn't this kinda remind you of last year? IIRC the Saints started out 6-0 and then proceeded to go down in flames as usual.
