  1. Hey Gary, It has been a while. Hope that all is well. Been busy playing with my new toy (boy) []
  2. Dean, Hang in there buddy. Be strong, fight and don't give up! Wishing you a full and speedy recovery. Guy
  3. It looks so cool. I'm sure it sounds good too. Enjoy!!![]
  4. Great post and a great find. I hope you'll enjoy these.
  5. Wow, These are soooo beutiful. Can't wait to hear your impressions.
  6. Croc, Sell your La Scala to me []. or you can try Altec 290 with 803b horns with your 2404 tweeters. It should work fine with the stock networks.
  7. Leaks have very high (125 mV) input sensitivity and most users prefer a passive preamp with these. They might work well with a Transformer based passive ( TVC).
  8. You can start with this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150444664286&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
  9. If you shop wise and have patience you'd be able to find a PAS 3 and a ST-35 whithin your budget. The ST-35 is a great amplifier and sounds more lively than a stock ST-70.
  10. Mark is mostly right but there are exceptions of course. Radford and Leak amps from the 50's-60's are not overly romantic. The Marantz 8B and Mac 240 are not either. Most late 70's and early 80's amps from ARC and C-J don't sound too different than the ones from the 50's which they are based upon. ARC started the business by modifying Dynacos and copying and trying to improve the design of most vintage 12ax7 based preamps (Marantz, Dyna etc). To my ears, they sound worse than the originals. Many of the modern tube gear sound like solid state to me and cost too much so why bother anyway. For first tube setup, I'd recommend something not too expensive with upgrade potential like the Dyna pre/power or Scott integrated amps and leave the expensive stuff for collectors or to someone with more experience.
  11. Dynaco ST-70 power amp and Dyna Pas or one of the older Conrad Johnson preamps.
  12. I've owned Wavelength Gemini PF with cobalt transformers and heard the Yamamoto A-08 (not S) in my system. Both were very good. I tend to favor the Wavelength because it had more speed and slam.
  13. I recommend Revox B-126 or B-226. They sound pretty amazing with klipsch ( especially after non oversampling mod ) You can try and find a Bogen B-62 turntable. I'm using one with my Klipsch (in a birch plywood plinth) and it is as good or better than a Garrard 301.
  14. I've got the Sony 227esd and it's a great player. Sounds very nice and the build quality and parts are top class. I also have a Revox B226 which sounds a little smoother. Both are top class players. I really like the sound of the tda1541. Check out this site http://www.lampizator.eu/LAMPIZATOR/REFERENCES/references.html . This crazy guy is adding tubes at the output of these players. I plan to follow his instructions and mod my 227 esd soon.
  15. Joe, I had the Gemini PF with cobalt transformers. It was the best amp I've ever owned. Fast, transparent and reproduces piano notes like no amp ever did before ( the Marantz 2 and 5's were in the same class ). The Lightning 45 should be similar. The cobalt transformers are a must. With stock transformers the sound is very good but not exceptional. Guy
  16. Love the looks but it sounds mediocre. Too dry to my ears. May be noisey with Klipsch so check the matching with your amp. Aux/cd input is too sensitive so you'll need to perform changes to the circuit in order to reduce it. You can study it here http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/Lab/6722/quad33cd.html
  17. Mark, Enjoy your retirement. Good luck, Guy
  18. I'm using the same type of open baffles myself with a pair of Altec 604K. I really like what I'm hearing. Bass is good enough for me. Here's a link with some info to the design http://members.myactv.net/~je2a3/open.htm
  19. $1200 seem OK to me as the other options which use the S&B transformers are made by Audio Zone and cost $2395 and by Music First Audio and I think it costs $2500. I still recommend you to try and audition the preamp before you purchase it as matching with other components is the key to its sound.
  20. I don't know the Django but a couple of days ago I received a Music First Audio TVC preamp for and audition (same S&B transformers) and it didn't do it for me. Although, main system speakers a insensitive BBC LS3/5A, The sound wasn't too dynamic enough for me. However, it did sound very smooth, evenly balanced and pleasant. Tried it in a different system with Altec 19's and overall impression was quite the same.
  21. Hey GP, All is well. Hope it's the same with you too. I do visit quite frequently but I'm on the passive side. I'll do my best to change it back to normal. Take care, Guy
