  1. Message from The Netherlands: The Khorns in our home played fine for years already, providing strong, deep bass like you might expect from these cabinets. Beeing reproductions made by a professional cabinetmaker, they are much heavier and more solid than the two original Khorn sets i had ( nothing bad about those though). Then I met the owner of a Dutch woodworker shop, who was interested in sound but never gave it much thought. I invited him for a listen and the same thing happened like it did when I heard hornspeakers for the first time ( La Scala). Long story short: we bought a set of La Scalas for him ( which are currently playing in his workshop..) and he agreed to make the closed backs on my Khorns like I had in mind. Later on he will build a pair of Khorns and use the LS drivers. Both happy with the end result, I thought I should post it here for others to see in case anyone is still in doubt of what to do with their Khorns, though I can understand the choive of not wanting to change anything on a original pair. After the makeover, they can be put anywhere in the room and do their thing: they even sound better as they did before. More midbass, tighter deep bass, more impact. I must confess that the walls inside our house are not made of bricks, hence the better sound now I guess. The braces are removable at the sides where the lid is (for acces to the woofer compartment). If anyone in The Netherlands needs a professional who can do a job like this: his name is "Johan Witte fijn timmerwerk" in Hillegom. Horns are great!
  2. Sale pending; drivers reserved for Chris.
  3. Up for sale; one pair of Community M200 drivers, 2 inch throat. Frequency range 400- 4.000Hz [ go up to 8.000Hz acc. to specs]. Very smooth and natural sounding drivers; low compression rate. Shipping is $60 [NL] to the U.S. Price; $275 --shipping included-- for the pair.
  4. O.K, too bad since I sold mine a couple of years ago and still regret.....
  5. I'm interested and living close by ; The Netherlands. If they're still up for sale PM me so we can work out a deal, thanks. Nico
  6. Ahhh.. THANKS to all of you, and especially you GPbusa! Yes, I did ask the customer service at Klipsch for information but they did not reply [yet]. As I was familiar with the older codes, owning several pairs of La Scala's before I was suprised to find I could not "read" these ones. A big "thumbs up" for all of you who responded, it's what makes this forum a special place for all Klipsch fans.
  7. THANK YOU all for responding; I should have mentioned that they were removed, but given to me along with the original caps after buying the Khorns. MACH-1 ; that's exactly what I was looking for! THANKS for providing both picture and schematic, now I can see where the can-type caps were positioned as well as the diodes.
  8. Who can post a picture [or knows where I can find one] of the zener diode protection in the early AA filters of my 1997 Khorns? The previous owner had removed them while changing the caps; I guess it's better to re-install them to protect the [round magnet] tweeters when playing loud. Thanks!
  9. Wish I was not so far away from you guys [ other side of the pond] ... would love to buy them ! GLWS
  10. Well... I have to admit that I do have a Umike from miniDSP and REW 5.0 installed on my laptop.... but stopped using it after some unsuccesfull attempts to understand it all.
  11. Thanks grindstone for you comment, I know it's not everybody's cup of tea to talk about more personal things on forums. For me it made all the difference while building these speakers and I'm happy others have experiences with "the old man" as well, with audio or other things in life.
  12. Interesting project, there are "Klonwall" DIY kits popping up from Germany over here in NL. After hearing some systems that use a big horn for mids, I have my doubts about the Khorn's original K-400 which is so small in comparison... Couldn't resist buying a set of Altec 511B's for pocket money when they were put up for sale local, just to fiddle around a bit. Love the drivers beeing flush with the motorboard; always makes for a more professional look.
  13. Just thought I'd post some more pics, as this thread is growing. In reply to Moray's question about wiring the two voicecoils I replied that mine are wired in parallel. If you happen to have a heavy poweramp, hum can be a issue so you can wire them in series to double the impedance and reduce the amp's output; worked for me with a Bryston 4B hooked to the woofers. Nico
  14. Thank you all for your comments. As for the plexi; that idea came from the fact that the braces for the wooferpanel [ on the sidewalls] had been chosen too thin. Also the seal was not airtight and I thought about how to make a proper sealing wooferpanel. The C15W woofer in my opinion is worth to be seen, so the plexi provided an answer to both issues. As for my wife; she has two sisters.......both married already. The succesfull marriage of the EV horn with the 2 inch beyma driver inside the horn-mouth is plain luck and started as a experiment. We're in the process of buying another house, you can guess what one of our wishes is regarding a livingroom or separate listening area.... These are for our boys when they become 16 years old, but mom and dad are going to have some fun with those in the mean time. [see pic]. Marvel; with the same amount of bass-boost [ gently going to +3Db from 50 to 25Hz] the Classics go deeper than the Khorns. The La Scala's don't even come close. With the LS's and Khorns I always used one or two subs to reach deep; I sold them both after starting to use the Classics in the living.
  15. You are correct, mine are set for 1K first order rolloff. The Beyma CP750Ti coupled to the EV940 takes over from there with 2nd order rolloff. Apart from a correction on 200Hz [ -1,2Db] and a gentle boost from 50Hz to 25Hz of 3Db plus a time-delay of 3,14 on the woofer, the system needs no corrections and sound very natural in our livingroom. Particularly voices are more lifelike and smoother than with the Khorn. After going two-way, I first had the impression that I lost some dynamics but what I heard was that the harshness had gone. As mentioned before, my wife has developed a good hearing after singing in a choir for years, plus we have friends who come over regularly to visit and listen to some music and I always value their opnions. With one exception, they all think the Classics are the best sounding speakers they've heard here [ beeing a Klipsch-fan to the bone, that single one pretends he's still mad at me for putting the Khorns in storage...]. I think that when you listen to the difference between a big two- way and a big three-way system that you know why Klipsch put so much efford in making the Jubilee. Make no mistake; I still love the Khorns but in a somehat smaller room the Classics simply perform better. Nico

  17. And one picture for encouragement Bruce... this was the result before going two-way active. Using the "high-boy" configuration ,the tweeter is perfectly at ear-level when sitting down to listen. Our youngest son seems to like them too, but for both sons there's already a set of Klipschorns sitting in storage. On their 16th birthday they'll both receive a set to enjoy loud AND clean music. Their mother wants the Classics to stay in the livingroom.
  18. Thank you for your comments. Bruce, they really are bigger than the LS's ; 106 x 83 x 60 cm compared to 60 x60 x80 cm for the La Scala's. [see picture] Funny thing though is that when you cut off the parts that are empty like the rear upper corner and the lower part on the front, then they look more elegant and slimmer. They are pretty easy forward to build, only part that needs attention are the angles of the first part of the horn. There are enough plans for building them available. There is a reason why Paul Klipsch's latest system was a 2-way..... my Khorns do not sound so detailed and smooth like the Classics, and don't reach that deep. If you think that I can be of any help when you are going to build them, let me know. Nico
  19. Well, we just celebrated my dad's 80th birthday and he's remarkably healthy both physical and mental. Our relationship has changed while we were working on the cabinets; from my dad always saying " you should do this that way" to " how do you think we should do this" . Ofcourse he has years of experience working with wood beeing a carpenter, but I got newer tools which often makes things a lot easier. He first surprised me by letting me put the cabs in his garage and parking his car outside, later he offered to help with remaking the cabs as well. My mother loved to see us bussy and supplied drinks and food and we sat at the table eating lunch just like old times.... but for the first time I didn't feel like a kid but like a grownup [weird] My father clearly respects me more like a adult now and we feel more at ease when we're together. Couple of weeks later I had a opportunity to thank him by buying a new set of loudspeakers for him as his old ones had dryed-out surrounds on the woofers and midranges. He never looked happier, now he listens to music again every day. I hope you and your dad will come closer as well, most of my friends also beeing around their 50's don't have their father anymore. He is the only one who can answer some questions you might always have wanted to ask; do it now as long as he's around ! As for the Classics; the way they are now [ two-way, active filtered ] they are the best sounding speakersystem I heard in my 30+ years of listening. Thanks Moray for your support. Nico
  20. Dude... you really don't understand why I waste so many words on this do you..... over here we stick to our word, even when it concerns a small deal. You could learn something from us "nederlanders" . Oh, and yes, we get bored this time of year; from things like this happening. Now get on with your life and enjoy your tubes.
