  1. We have neighbours directly on both sides and when we play a bit louder they know it's not going to be long. They never complain though I'm sure they "notice something" when I play my favorite Kodo tracks.... those tracks make our house shake. I agree with the statement that you don't really notice playing loud, it does not seem to be loud when it's clean. You do notice however when someone wants to speak with you; they only seem to "mime". Did upset / amuse a lot of people back in the old days of car-audio though; 2,8Kw amp power on 8 x 15 inch Cerwin Vega woofers in a small [competition] car. Won the European Championship in 1996 with 154.9 Db. [closed doors, measured inside at Iasca standards]. With both doors open and playing test-tones between 20 and 30Hz things started to move in the direct vicinity. At a Mc Donalds drive-thru they said "come on, let's hear it" when waiting for a burger. With one door open and 27Hz at full power the computer controlling the ovens shut down and people ran out for the windows were moving bad and everything was rattling. All car-alarms went off at the parking .The manager luckily was a man with humor and did not call the cops, instead he demanded another demo at the parking with him sitting in the car, like we told him; he was out in a second. Later converted the wall behind the speakers for 4 x 18 Inch JL woofers, for they played even lower; we had a lot of fun back then.

When people comment about our horns of beeing too big and dominating the room, I show a pic of your system to shut them up.
  3. Thanks for your comments, especially the pics of the C-style Khorn on Ebay are interesting; the bottomplate of that tophat does not extend into the corner like mine but is sawed off and the serial is stamped in the edge of the "sawed-off" piece. Mine are stamped into the sides. I thought about a way to make false corners for them so I could use them in our current home, but they def. would upset my wife, who is just grown to be happy with the big Universal Classics in our living. That also would mean I'd have to repaint them in another [much lighter] colour; just won't do that. Also I like the looks of this "open version"of the Khorn better than the C-style, they look less bulky. They are in very good condition and need to be preserved and enjoyed in their original state [whatever that was when they left the factory..]. Thanks, Nico
  4. Punched-in numbers shown on pics attached. There are some small holes in backside of the frontpanel, two left and two on the right, also on each tophat three holes apprearing to be from a piece of wood standing up, the outlines of which are visible [someone drew a pencil around them]. Difficult to take pics; they're in storage with not much light and they're black... All numbers match with the labels, all seem to be 100% original, no numbers altered or added. These numbers are also punched in inside the woofer-compartment. Would really like to know more about these ! Nico
  5. A old colleque of mine used to accept every cigarette he was offered, brake it and throw it in the bin. When asked about this strange behaviour he replied; "you find pleasure in smoking one, I find pleasure in destroying one". He was a bit of a typical guy, but honest....
  6. Having a room without the needed coners for Khorns, I made up some false corners before trying them out, but there was almost no bass. After some more reading , now I know they really need the corner-loading to get to their full potential. Never heard my favorite japanese drum-track so convincing as at one friend's house; he has got the perfect room for Khorns....I felt every blow on the big drums in my gut and the couch was like moving under me. [that experience made me buy Khorns]. So mine are waiting for a suitable home....someday.
  7. I'll make pics of those numbers and post them tonight [ in the morning that is for you guys] . They're in storage at work.
  8. I know, pics are just for helping to determine what they are. Thanks for your replies, each bassbin has it's serial punched in, as well as the corresponding tophat.... they really are a set and have not been altered except for new caps in the crossovers. Still think it's curious......
  9. I just bought a old original Klipsch Khorn add on Ebay [ just for fun]. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Klipschorn-Klipsch-AD-from-1974-Undressed-Nice-Ad-/161395448635?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2593eb1b3b Showing my K-C-FB Khorns, but by the looks of that add and the text, I don't have style "C" Khorns like the label says, but style "D".....? I only discoveredd it because the original add says that style C came with grilles and cloth and are made of birch veneered plywood. Mine are fir black, no birch veneer and no grilles as can be seen on the pics....?
  10. If you have read the advice given; DO IT !
  11. One day.... when my two braincells have grown to three [ when that even will happen in the first place].... then I hope to understand what you guys do with measurements.... I only have my wife's ears and mine, but we do use time-delay in our two-way system and it's a bit like the icing on the cake for us.
  12. This idea of making a better air-tight and seamless connection came after mounting the K55-v to the EV adaptor for the HR-90 horn [1.5 inch throat] which I put in my La Scala's. I noticed the standard gaskets were not perfectly centered, created a imperfection in the rise of diametre of the conical adaptor plus they were visible when looking at the speakers. After removal of the front pieces of the drivers, it was quite easy to machine the correct shape into the aluminium "nose" and have the solution I wanted. I also centered out- and machined the inside of the K55's "nose" to the exact size of the adaptor. Having polished the inside of both K55 and adaptor, plus removing the mesh out of the K55's they also look very nice now. [bonus] Edit; a standard rubber 0-ring of the correct size serves very well, no fancy materials used here.
  13. I did this to get a perfect fit from my K55-v's to the EV adaptor. Makes the standard rubber gasket obsolete. Edit; don't recall beeing able to hear any difference, but I just wanted a perfect transition from driver to adaptor anyhow.
  14. These are on German Ebay from a German manufacturer. Dave, DeanG, Mr. Crites, or anyone who knows about crossovers can say something about these ? Thanks, Nico Edit; the add says the pot is for slope, not attenuation.
  15. Visited a person in Germany once who had his Khorn bass bins mounted vertically in the corners of his room, against the ceiling. The top section was mounted under them, at ear-level. Sounded great and looked pretty awesome.
  16. Though I sometimes do not understand everything said, I LOVE this project! Why? -After hearing a OB system on a audioshow nothing else seemed to come even close that day while listening to many other [ expensive!] setups [ in terms of clarity, dynamics and realism]. -I'm always trying to get my few braincells to understand loudspeakerdesigns, and looking at the pics provided together with the comments in this thread it helps and is great fun. -It shows I'm not the only one that has tried many, many things to recapture a experience, it's like a curse sometimes . There are days that I think it can't get any better and then I read another interesting story on this forum that starts me thinking again..... I've been offered a large batch of drivers , small to large, now and then but did never buy them for there was no purpose. Next time, I might just see my wife shaking her head again when I come home with a car filled with speakers... Keep up the good [experimenting] work ! Nico
  17. My wife and I are fans as well of him and use some of his jokes in every-day's life, like " Effie..., brace yourself " [Ms. Doubtfire]. Also lines from movies like Peter Pan, Jumanji and Patch Adams are heard frequently here in the house. Maybe his talent prooved to be to much to live with, leading to his addiction to drugs and alcohol....very sad. He will surely be missed on this side of the pond as well.
  18. One of the advantages of a big hornsystem; you can use a small tube amp with short signal path. Clean signal in- great sound out of your Khorn.
  19. Thanks Chris, we already thought it might be possible to crossover at 700; he wants to go active and try out a miniDSP just as I do meaning he will be able to choose from 6 up to 48Db/oct and various types of filtering. Now all he has to do is finding a suitable horn-driver combination which is capable to take over from there.....gonna be a big one I guess. Nico
  20. Thanks for posting! Was already looking for more vintage reading material, I just LOVE those old pictures complete with text and comments!
  21. Buddy of mine has LS's with the bassmod; opened doghouse, two ports in each closed backpanel.. Now he wants to try out a 2-way setup like I did with my University Classics; is it possible for the LS bassbin to reach high enough for a mid-high horn to take over...? What would be the maximum recommended crossoverpoint and slope so he would know what mid/high horn to look for? Thanks, Nico
  22. I want a garage like that...... hope the neighbours like your music.
  23. When you have the time, go through this thread; https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/151224-my-new-deang-networks…/page-1 It shows how different people, most of them with huge experience, think about active versus passive. Personally I would go for active; I'm a believer after leaving a high-quality set of crossovers and went for a active setup , it never sounded so realistic and the flexibility of a active setup is awesome for fine-tuning. my 2cnts. Nico
  24. Ahhh.... just learned something again today; thanks. I will make that change to find out what it sounds like. Here comes the versatility of a active system into play imo; it's easy to change everything, adjusting levels for each channel and listen some time. Going back to the previous setup is simply hook up the wires as they were and load the last saved setting with a few clicks. I've got some amps stored because I couldn't part with them; will put them into play again with this experiment, but you are right about the Decware's defenately sounding the best. Sorry for getting off-topic btw; this thread has gone from north to south as we say over here. Will post my findings elsewhere. Thanks again, Nico
  25. I completely agree with that; it makes me go to concerts sparely. You should hear a concert of the choir my wife sings in; over 150 trained voices singing on different occasions without sound reinforcement. Many times; goosebumps [ and moving toes] guaranteed.
