Thanks to all of you who tried to help. Special thanks to Myram who hit it on the head. When I originally did what he suggested, it still didn't work, or so I thought. This morning I was going to play some CD's and when I powered on the receiver it was in VCR2 mode from when I was dinking around, and I could hear the TV sound coming thru the speakers very faint. I thought WTF?? Then it hit me. I turned on the TV, and turned the TV volume all the way down, and then cranked up the volume from the cable box, and voila! It works! Of course Keith, I've read the manual. What I have isn't a digital issue, it's analog. Everything digital works just dandy. Myram, do you have yours setup similar to mine? With a digital audio cable coming out of the cable box into the receiver, and then a pair of analog plugs from the cable box to a different port on the receiver? I still can't get it to work, even when I disconnect the digital audio portion, thinking the cable box won't send out an analog and digital at the same time, it's still dead. The only settings I saw for the cable box is what type of digital audio (DD or other) and then what type (normal,wide,narrow). Other than that, I don't think you can actually tell the cable box where to send the audio from? ~Disgruntled CheeseHead (Think how mad I'd be if the Packers got blown out and Dennis Miller was making fun of us instead of the Skins!)

Will I need to run the video portion also? Or just the sound? I connected just the white and red audio cables to VCR2, and put the receiver on VCR2, and still didn't get sound. Then when I put my TV into the 'Video 1' mode so I could check the on-screen settings of my receiver, I swore I heard noise from the speakers, although there was no picture. I didn't have time to check into it, the game was back on and my buddies were bitchin'. So I'm thinking if I run both audio and the video from the cable box to the VCR2 of the receiver, and then put the TV on Video 1 I could solve it?

Good point, I have everything else in the house protected, might as well do the cable line too. Maybe get a line conditioner too? No luck on my wiring issue, guess I watch the game thru the TV speakers. Bummer!

I have the analog inputs from the cable box going to the TV/DBS inputs of the receiver, which are in the same row as the Digital Audio In. I tried disconnecting the digital audio cable completely to see if analog would kick in, but it's not. Argh!

I have my Klipsch RF3's all plugged into my Denon3801, and everything is cool, until it comes time to deal with the cable box. I ran a cable from the Digital Out on the Cable box to my TV/DBS Digital in on the receiver, and all is great, but I only get sound from those channels that broadcast digitally. My question is, how can I get the non-digital stations to come thru the receiver? I just added some cables from the back of the cable box for an analog signal and ran those to the analog in's of the receiver, but it's not recognizing them! When I flip to a non-digital channel, the receiver goes from digital to analong, but it's not searching for the analog inputs? Any help would be appreciated, the Packer game is on tonight! I was in the same boat as you as to deciding where to buy my HT from. The best deals by far are online, but you won't get a valid warranty, no matter what they say. There are a couple places that you'll get a warranty from because they're 'authorized dealers', but you'll pay the MSRP for the equipment, the same you'd pay at your local dealer. So, my advice is to do what the other poster suggested, wait for a sale at your local dealer. I got all mine at a '50% of normal markup sale' and saved $600 alone on speakers and $300 off my receiver.

I've had a pair of the RS-3's for surrounds (The WDST speakers you're talking about) for about a month now. I've abused my entire system during this 'break-in' process, and I can say I'm totally happy with the RS-3's. Not only to movies sound incredible (once you get them positioned and tweaked correctly...I actually adjusted the dB input on my to +2 via my Denon 3801) but regular music really sounds good. I never listen to CD's thru my 2 mains anymore, I pump it through all my speakers.

I just got Time Warners digital cable and have watch lots of newer flicks on HBO...NONE of which were in 5.1. My receiver only detects a Dolby ProLogic (I think that's Dolby 2.0) signal coming from the cable box.

Hey RWMIN...you know the model # of your dish and decoder box? The one I was looking at is (so I thought) the only one out there with HDTV...The RCA DTC100... that also handles a 5.1 surround signal. I could be wrong, and probably am. FYI, this upcoming weekend is another Starz freebie.

To add insult to injury, once I get below channel 100, I don't get sound. What a mess. Does that mean that I should hook up L and R audio jacks to the cable box, run them to the 3801, and then I'll have to mess with the receiver settings anytime I want to view anything below 100? Granted this is only when I *WANT* to run things through the receiver, 90% of the time I'll be listening to the TV thru the TV speakers. Only time I'd use the receiver is if/when I can get a movie in DD, or there's a Packer game

Ah ha! I always had it in 'auto' mode, but for the heck of it I pressed it again, and I got sound! Only bad part is, everything is defaulting to Pro Logic mode. I'm not sure if they movies I'm flipping thru on HBO are 5.1 or not, doubt it, they're all older. To test it, I played my Matrix DVD and the receiver automatically went into DD mode, but when I toggle back to the TV/DBS I get Pro Logic. Anyone know if digital cable companies broadcast in 5.1? I remember when I was pricing satellite dishes the guy told me that if I wanted a 5.1 capable dish I'd have to shell out $600.

Firstly, thanks to everyone who helped me figure out my 5-channel stereo/DD/DTS issue. Now I have a new problem as of today. I had digital cable installed, and on the back of the converter there is an S-Video jack which I have going up to my receiver. It also has a digital audio coax cable connector. I'm hoping it transmits a true DD signal! Anyway, I bought the cable to connect the Audio out on the cable box to the one and only coax jack on my Denon 3801. I went into the On-Screen menu of the Denon and set the TV/DBS to Coaxial...and I'm still not getting any sound! Anybody have any ideas? I'm not so sure that statement is true about 5 channel mode only being a 2-channel 'effect'. I was watching Aliens in 5-channel mode and was definitely hearing sounds behind me that weren't coming out of the fronts. So there has to be more than 2 channel input to do that.

Ah, good call. The Aliens box and Matrix box both have the DD logos, but only the Matrix box says 5.1 next to it. So, another question. When watching Aliens, should I let it go to Pro Logic mode? Or should I switch it back to 5-channel stereo? Never used Pro Logic so I don't know what it's capable of. Thanks for all the help, u guys rock.

OK, follow up to my follow up...I put in the Matrix DVD, and it stays in Dolby D mode on the receiver. I guess even the the Aliens DVD says 'Dolby Digital' on the DVD jacket, it's actually not? And that's why it goes back to Pro Logic? At any rate, definite difference between DD and 5-channel modes. I liked 5 channel mode because it 'disguised' my center channel more, right now it sits up too high on top of the entertainment center, I had no room right on top of the TV. In DD mode I can definitely tell the sound is coming from ABOVE the TV. Looks like it's time to build a custom entertainment center.

Damn, I need help figuring this out. When I'm in 5 channel stereo mode, it says 'digital' on the receiver, and I get 5 separate channels, not a bogus creation from 2 channels. Now, when I hit the Dolby/DTS surround button on the remote, it will only toggle between Dolby Pro Logic and Neo 6 modes. So I try this...I put in the Aliens DVD and put it in Pro Logic mode...it STAYS in Pro logic mode, until the THX screen comes on, then the receiver says Dolby D! But right after that, it goes back to Dolby Pro logic! Is this because the receiver is on 'Auto'?

True, the topic is 5 Channel stereo vs. DTS...On the Denon 3801 it displays 5CH ST DVD when I'm playing a movie in 5.1 Dolby Digital. (The little Dobly Digital LED is also on in this mode.) I'll definitely have to get some more DTS movies. One of the features I was looking for in a DVD player was a DTS pass-thru so I could actually take advantage of DTS. But so far, I'd give Dolby Digital a 10, and DTS a 4...granted it's only been ONE movie, and I haven't tweaked the DTS parameters yet.

I have the audio out on the DVD player hooked up through the optical jack. I was playing with the Denon toggling back and forth between 5Channel and DTS modes using the remote. I can set the Denon to 'Auto' mode, but I'm not sure if it will automatically detect that I chose DTS instead of 5Channel. I'll check next time I rent a DTS movie.

I've watch about a dozen DVD's so far, all in 5 Channel mode, works/sounds great. I rent a movie that has the DTS option (Amercian Beauty), so I figure I'd give it a try. It's less compressed, so should sound better, right? What a difference. It seems that EVERYTHING wants to come out the center channel. Anyone know if this is normal? It's a bit unorthadox, but it sure works. If you want to try the same it's part #15-1568, quad shielded low-loss antenna cable. Really thick stuff. Then get 2 plugs, one for your receiver, and one for the LFE jack on the sub. Fit them to each end of the cable. Cost me about 30 bucks total.

Wow, you have some pricey fish! I took down my 55 that had African cichlids in it when I remodeled and gave the fish to my friends. Now that my room is put back together I'll be putting a salt tank up. On a related note, have you ever had a speaker above a tank, fresh or salt? I'm also curious how fish will react with a subwoofer about 6 feet away.
