  1. I have made the difficult decision to part with my Chorus II's, mostly due to health issues and them not being used.  I have owned them about 12 years for my home theater.  I used them until I switched to LaScalas and had plans to use them elsewhere, but have decided to pass them along to the next lucky owner.

These speakers have sequential serial numbers. These are all original without any modifications.

Overall they are in nice condition.
There are minor issues with the rear passive radiator which can easily be repaired if desired. I have not found it necessary and left them as-is while I have owned them.

Asking $1800 for the pair. Local pick-up in the Seattle area, cash only please.

Feel free to message with any questions, and I will post pictures tomorrow.

  2. Thanks everyone for your help!

I did buy the speaker.  It was in better condition than I had expected.  A bit dusty and some paint splatters, but I will try to get those off.  I unhooked the internal amp and plugged it into mine and everything works!

I'll probably still send in the crossovers and remove the volume controls, but happy with the purchase!

Looks good to me for a center Lacala ,  amp can be removed , and wood damages can be repaired easily ,  a light sanding  ---and you're all set , plus being an organ speaker , Drivers should in great shape  ------------but you should check the tweeter and midrange drivers for DCR to make sure they are in good condition -

Thanks everyone!  I think it might just be worth the risk if I can get for a low enough price.  I had planned on sending my existing crossovers in to Crites anyway.

Randy - I am not familiar with the term DCR?  What am I looking for?

  4. Hi All -

I have come across a local seller with a single La Scala (LS-BB) SN #7P896 with AA crossovers.  From a google search, it appears to have been used as an organ speaker, as it has the amplifier mounted inside. The seller is a resale shop (not a fellow enthusiast or stereo dealer) and says it "is not working", but thinks that is due to the amplifier.  There is also some damage to the cabinet (see pictures). My intent would be to remove or bypass the amplifier and use this as a center channel with my existing La Scalas.

    My questions are:

    1. Am I correct in assuming the amplifier built-in can be simply bypassed/disconnected?
    2. Will the physical damage to the cabinet have an impact on the sound, and would the correct way to repair be using some kind of wood filler?
    3. Given the condition and age (looks to be 1976), any thoughts on a fair price?

Thanks everyone, always appreciate the feedback!

    Joel

ok -  do you want to keep your AA or will be parting with these --

Not sure, I have to decide if I want to send in for a rebuild or buy new.    New our decrease my "down time, but it is $200 more.  Mine are from 1978, so not sure if the rest of the parts also need replacement from age.

I’m pretty happy with the AAs in my La Scalas.  I haven’t heard the A/4500s, so I can’t help you there.

It comes down to how much money you feel like spending.  Re-capping the AA crossovers will keep your speakers stock, sounding like they’re brand new, or close to it, and the AA crossovers are liked and respected by many La Scala owners.  They’re probably the most popular LS crossovers.  Some people really like the 4500s, but it’s a much smaller number.

As for the CT120 tweeters, that should be a worthwhile upgrade, and you can keep the K-77s if you want to put your speakers back to stock at some point.  I’ve got the earlier CT125 tweeters, and I’d never go back to K-77s.

    Hope this is helpful.

Thanks!  It is helpful.  I suppose I can try the new crossovers first and see the difference, and if I wanted to get the C120's later if I want.

I second the “pop in fresh capacitors and a pair of CT-120s and you’re done” concept.  That way, it won’t cost you much to get clearly improved sound.  Going super-modified, especially with the K-402 horns and K-69-A or K-691 drivers, second power amp and active electronic crossover, will give you great sound, but it will start to approach the price of a pair of Jubilees, and it still won’t sound as good as Jubilees.

I went that route and was surprised how much it cost.  If you go for really high performance, it makes no sense to cheap out on any component in the signal chain, but it adds up fast.  There are expensive ways to get great sound, and there are slightly less expensive ways, but there are no really cheap ways.

Just my two cents.  Oops, we don’t have cents up here anymore.  Just my nickel.

OK, so if I go that route, do I stay with the AA crossover or get the a/4500???

  8. Been doing a lot of reading on various forums and wanted to get an opinion from the fellow members here.

I've got a pair 1978 LaScalas with the original innards.  We use them as a home theater watching TV, movies, and sports (when not in a pandemic).  Occasionally I will fire up the turntable and spend a few hours spinning some vinyl.  I am considering making these modifications:

    A. New Type AA crossover from Crites with tweeter diaphragm replacement

    or

    B.  New  A/4500 crossover with the CT120 tweeters.

Cost is about the same, so that's not much of a factor.  I am leaning towards option B,  but the purist in me says this changing too much from the intended original design.  Like is a Chevy still a Chevy if you replace the engine?

Would appreciate any thoughts on the topic...

  9. I currently have 2 KSW-12's (one front, one back) in my HT set-up with my La Scala fronts and Chorus II center.

Curious as to if either of the 15" subs would add anything overt he 12's, and if so, are the reference ones any better than the KSW-15?  I see a few KSW's on craigslist from time to time, and the R-115's are mostly new since they are the current model.

  10. I picked up a pair of La Scala's tonight locally from 1978.  The code says Birch Raw, but they are not bare wood now and I assuming they have been stained.

Any suggestions on what to use to clean them up - any kind of furniture oil or polish?  They are in pretty good shape...

There are a few chips/nicks here and there that can be expected for speakers 40 years old...would be it wise try and "color in" the chipped areas with a matching stain?

  11. I am currently using 4 x KG 1.5's for my side/rear surrounds.  I have had them for many years and usually just had them placed on the floor since I didn't have room for stands.

New house, new room more dedicated for the theater set-up.  Unfortunately our builder was being a pain so I couldn't pre-wire, but I may suck it up and do in-wall/ceiling.

Any recommendations on models what would fit my set-up?  In-wall vs.  ceiling??

    Thanks,

    Joel

  12. I have a pair of Chorus II's for my fronts and asked the same question about 2 years ago. I got a similar response at first (...another Chorus II),but others responded in a smilar way as you above!

I patiently waited and watched criagslist for an Academy center, Forte II's, or Quartets.  Lucky for me, about a week into my search, a really nice pair of Quartet's popped up for $275, which I jumped on.  As it was a pair, I still have the "extra" one sitting off in the closet.

  13. Hi All -

I am currently using 4 of the KG 1.5's for my side/rear surrounds.  I have had them for many years and usually just had them placed on the floor since I didn't have room for stands.

New house, new room more dedicated for the theater set-up.  Unfortunately our builder was being a pain and I couldn't get the surround points wired prior to the walls going up, otherwise I most likely would have done in-wall/ceiling speakers for the surrounds.

My question is with the KG 1.5's, are there any recommended mounting brackets or speakers stands?  The bottoms have some threaded holes that I resume are for brackets or for the stands?

    Would appreciate any thoughts/guidance.

  14. Thanks everyone for the thoughts.  I am going to play with the AVR settings, as I think that's the issue.  It's a Denon X2100W.

The question about the Belles was not necessarily meant as a fix for lack of bass, but more of a general question...I always loved the look of them and I have the space for them (but not Khorns), and they were locally available.  I have honestly never heard them but was intrigued.

But the points made on a 2 channel vs. AVR set-up may have sealed the deal to stick with what I've got and tinker/fine tune, rather than replace regardless of the bass.

Thanks again to this awesome community!

  15. 2 Different questions for the group...

My current set-up is front Chorus II's, center Quartet, KG1.5's for surrounds, and 2 powered 12" subs.

    1) Comments regarding the Chorus II's include raves about how good the bass is of the Chorus II's stand alone, but I am not hearing it.  I am going to try to re-balance my Denon receiver, but even on Pure Direct mode there doesn't seem to be that lower frequency rumble/pop coming out of them that I had expected. Could it be something with the speakers or crossovers?  I've felt this way since I got them, but the sub seemed to make up the difference for television, but not so much for music listening.

    2) Someone locally has put up for sale a pair of Belle's with AA crossovers (1979?) but newer sonicaps.  Some cosmetic issues and they are more than $2,000 for the pair. My question is if they would provide enough of an upgrade over the Chorus II's for a home theater set-up?  I usually watch movies, but also occasionally listen to music (typically rock), so I would want the best speaker for that.  I think the Chorus II's have been great for movies, but have not had that punch for movies.  I added the 2nd sub in the back and that has added a lot, but like I said with question 1, it may be a re-balancing issue I will look at tomorrow.

    Thank you for your indulgence!

  16. My KSW-200 is having some issues and I am looking for a replacement.  Locally, several folks are selling KSW-12's at good prices, but I am concerned about the inputs.  I have read the Klipsch FAQ's and the online manuals, but need some help interpreting what I am reading.

Simply, with my KSW200 I have a single RCA sub cable going from my receiver to the sub. Plus is does have Line In L/R, and Line our L/R RCA jacks.

The KSW-12 does not have that subwoofer input jack.  It has RCA L/R. IS there a reason the KSW-12 doesn't have the Sub RCA input?

So I am confused as to how I would set this up with the single sub cable??  Maybe I am overthinking this?

    Thanks in advance,

    Joel
