  1. is a solder pot what i would need for magnet wire? i have spools of wire which are supposedly solderable, but even at the hottest temperature I can't burn the varnish off ..scraping gets old fast. edit** google is my friend and i just learned the proper technique ...looks like i need solder on the tip of the iron and then pass the wire through the melted solder (i've just been using a hot tip, expecting the varnish to vanish.)
  2. i drove about 300 miles to pick up speakers ..I would have been irate if this happened (looooong day of driving for speakers) ..though there isn't much one can do in such a situation. sounds like you handled it well. in my case, however ..the wife seemed exceptionally pleased to be getting a pair of speakers out of the house
  3. kyle ..turn around and run away ..NOW. this forum is like an AA meeting at the local pub and you'll soon find yourself selling your inconsequential organs just to upgrade your speakers. ...give what you've got some time to warm up to your room and ears, read read read, and then upgrade based on what you HEAR (or don't).
  4. you need like 12-24... and the age of 1 sounds like a perfect time to start indoctrinating the young with respect for audio gear
  5. +1 for the 936. I recently traded for a nice 926 (older generation) and am in love with it. A 936 will run you around $100
  6. back to my point ..it's not just a simple "go with 12awg cuz bigger is always better" answer. using the same material but larger gauge produced horrible sound in my experience. the same cables can sound drastically different depending on the gear and room dynamics. yes, there is a lot of misinformation, placebo effect, and shady business. but there is also definitely the possibility that one can recognize audible differences ...so you might just have to try a few different things and see what you like (or don't)
  7. nice score! i've always been impressed with images that come out of it. it's legendary status doesn't hurt either .. ping me if you ever decide to sell
  8. i actually do just that phil. i took an old broken TT console from the curb and gutted it. carved out the front fascia and crafted a screen out of peg board and black grille fabric. I cut out two large squares so as to reduce weight, allow for better RF controls, and reduce blockage of the speaker. I used closet door magnet assemblies to mount (the plates are adhered to the pegboard via hot glue and the magnets mounted in the cabinet.) here's a pic... you'll see the center is currently on top of the cabinet, but i've since rearranged and placed the center inside so i could use my new tv on it's stand
  9. So, you like fast Nikon primes. How about this one? i just wet myself ... how is it, shooting with the unicorn of nikon glass?
  10. are you handy with some wood tools and paint/stain? you could easily build a flexy stand for around $100. http://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/flexye.html I made one out of pre-cut 48" square plywood. stained the surface with red mahogany and painted the edges and hardware in flat black ..looks cool. by going pre-cut, i only had to drill the holes ( i chose to use 4 vs. the 3 in the link). amazingly sturdy and i was able to get everything from lowes. took a day to complete from shopping to finish. let me know if you want more info on parts and process ..i'll try and post a pic of the build later on
  11. i feel your pain. i have one concave 90 degree corner in all of my living room ..and one side of it is a window. then i have WAF. ultimately, I've just had to place it in a spot that gives the least crappy output and be happy with it. im hoping to benefit greatly from the rt-10d's room calibration mode to flatten things out and improve the sound.
  12. that's badass. I shoot nikon, am a big fan of fast glass (especially primes). I mostly do art and random crap for myself, but occasionally find myself signed up to do some weddings or corporate gigs. i'm not even a real fan of contract work, but it's the only way i can justify buying more gear ...and i am most certainly a gear *****. i'm working on a proper portfolio site, but here's my flickr in the meantime: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thaddeus_smith/
  13. not sure what you're looking to spend, but this seller has 10 for $370 each. http://cgi.ebay.com/KLIPSCH-RW10-D-10-INCH-POWERED-SUBWOOFER-BRAND-NEW_W0QQitemZ290379784374QQcmdZViewItemQQptZSpeakers_Subwoofers?hash=item439bfbe0b6#ht_2199wt_1167
  14. don't build the expectations up beyond reality, steve. however ...my dad is not an audiophile, videophile, or quick to upgrade anything technology related. he's a self proclaimed luddite. he came over and watched iron man on blu-ray at my house ..totally blown away. was a nice ego boost as a son ..
  15. i'll be monitoring your interactions with my 5's...
  16. I know Youthman is into it ..and i thought i read that colter was as well. especially if you're in dfw, it would be cool to do a mass orgy of gear swapping/auditioning some saturday ...or it may end up as a sensory overload, not sure.
  17. cool, thanks for the confirmation. given your sig, i'll take that opinion as gospel
  18. my personal experience would indicate the contrary. i tinkered with several gauges and finally landed on a mix of 18AWG to the woofers and 22awg to the tweeters. spent some time listening and really liked how my rf-5's sound. so i figured, double runs of 12awg surely would sound awesome and deliver more power. after several hours of making pretty cables i hooked them up and was immediately disappointed. the speakers were very shrill and lacking in detail. epic fail. i had my wife listen, without telling her i swapped cables, and she made similar comments. cool, so it wasn't my ears fooling me. i went back to the 18/22 combo and haven't looked back. definitely tinker, but for me the assumption that huge gauge=awesome sound no longer rings true.
  19. on the contrary ..i happily bi-wire. placebo or not ..i like the sound of my 18/22AWG magnet wire mix
  20. over on head-fi.org they average about $250 ..sometimes they have a recable, balanced connections, etc ..all of which affects the price, besides overall condition.
  21. how picky is it? I just purchased a used one that doesn't include the calibration mic, but it looks like my marantz audyssey mic will mechanically work. I know that these mic's are manufacturer specific, as it pertains to the unique implementations of audyssey ..but will it matter for this sub?
  22. nothing specific, but i asked for action/visually&audibly stunning blu-rays. stuff like the fall, the fountain, bad boys II, etc.
  23. when can i come down from mckinney and experience this?
