  1. been using my 18/22 AWG bi-wire cables and they sound great. Hooked them up to my newly acquired rf-5's and they are phenomenal. so I decided to make a pair of all 12awg wires ..same twist pattern and material surrounding the wires. they sound horrible. very bright and unbalanced ..there may be some break in required, but I couldn't manage to listen to them long enough to find out. if anyone wants to give them a listen, i'll pack them up (5ft-ish, unterminated) and send them your way for the cost of shipping. I'd love to get a second opinion. maybe a design tweak is required at this gauge? It was an immediate night and day difference between the two sets.
  2. So I'm doing some speaker switching and found myself with a pair of in-walls (which were my fronts) and no longer have a wall to use them in. I've also been listening to my kg 3.5's (which were my rears) a lot in 2-channel mode over the last week and have come to the conclusion that i don't really like them. the bass response is nice, but the horns are quite shrill at loud levels. Last night I tried to build boxes ..b/c, you know, I took wood shop in high school. epic fail. i went inside to sulk a bit and drink some shiner. and then i had an epiphany ..ran a few quick measurements and lo-and-behold, the KG 3.5's produce about 1.6 cubic feet in volume, which is what I need for my in-walls. The woofers are smaller, but the tweeters are so much smoother ..the box has a port, but that's easily plugged ..and best of all, it's wide enough to fit the mounting frame. a little jig saw work, some caulk, internal re-wire, and some paint ..and I now have the first pair of KG 3.5-R-3650-W's. I've yet to crank them to see what sort of bass response I get, but so far they are good and should serve perfectly as my surrounds..
  3. Good idea. I was fortunate, my RF-83's and RC-64 arrived at my local dealer via pallet. and, it gives carl a chance to show off his DeanG'd 7's
  4. I'm driving 11 hours round-trip on saturday just to avoid this sort of thing .. worth it, IMO.
  5. btw ..there's a dude on the bay selling a bunch of new old stock at heavily discounted prices. I picked up a pair of the SC/IV's @ 1.5m for $54 instead of $160 from Vampire Wire direct.
  6. +1 for the onkyo ..great value for the HP you actually get.
  7. for me, it's nice to have all my components connected (except for the wii) to the avr with short hdmi cables and then only one going to the tv. it makes programming the harmony remote easier, cuts down on cable mess, and keeps me from having to route audio and video to separate sources or using the tv as an audio pass-through.
  8. ya know ..the argument could be made for using these as the new bedroom set
  9. As a former I.T. guy speaking ... mistakes happen, quoted time frames almost always have to be adjusted, and everyone has "off" days. I've never actually ordered from them or needed to work through support issues so I can neither defend or condemn their actions. In any case ..sometimes you're just going to have a bad experience. Often times customers put HUGE expectations on the shoulders of support staff and fail to realize that these guys are still only human. someone else can have my soapbox now ..
  10. this post is pretty pointless without pics
  11. just picked up a carver m-1.0t this morning. It's another week before I get my RF-5's, so I hooked up the KG 3.5's and it drives them without breaking a sweat. It's a little harsh on the top end at reference levels, but overall I like the balance it brings to things. running audyssey through the marantz again would probably help ...so would proper room dynamics. to answer your question, I don't think switching the power on/off via your adcom should cause any major issues.
  12. it also appears to be geared more towards recording/broadcasting applications.
  13. I've had a pair on my wish list for quite a while now and when I went to their website to sigh and drool, I can no longer find a reference to them. I see they have 4 new models under the hi-def product line, but which of these would be most closely matched? K272? A little sad now ..
  14. i built the bi-wires yesterday and they look snazzy. 18 AWG for the low end and 22 AWG for the highs. a) they work trying to mentally separate the placebo effect ..need to do some a/b listening b.1) I bi-wired my rc-3 and it seems to be a little smoother and detailed over the stock jumpers + monoprice 12 AWG wire. b.2) I don't get my rf-5's until this weekend, so I hooked up my KG 3.5's and seems to have toned down the harshness of the highs. I'll post some pics later ..nothing special, just some twisted pairs with heat shrink and techflex, tinned ends for the reciever and bare wire wrapping on the speakers. for now, i at least know they work as good as the 12 AWG wire with a much smaller footprint.
  15. i don't have an lcd tv, so my settings arent going to be helpful to you. beyond that, each set is different and the amount of ambient light and other variables make each tv setup's "sweet spot" unique. do some research and testing on your own through the many resources suggested here and then ultimately tweak your tv to what looks best to your own eyes.
  16. you might check out http://www.avsforum.com/ they have pretty extensive forums and usually there is a thread specific to every make and model currently (and recent history) out there where owners share their experience and common tweaks.
  17. thanks for the addditional info. I guess I was more curious about the efficiency of going bi-wire over replacing the factory jumpers with diy. or maybe there isn't any efficiency benefit from one method or the other. most of what i've found re: magnet wire cables is many years old and I was wondering if there were any new developments or insights. I dont like to be spoon-fed information, but I do try to avoid re-discovering info/tips/shortcuts when I can. cheers - michael
  18. And you may ask yourself What is that beautiful house? And you may ask yourself Where does that highway go? And you may ask yourself Am I right? ...am I wrong? And you may tell yourself My god!...what have I done?
  19. a friend of mine has the 706 and loves it. I've only watched a couple of movies on it, but from what I saw it was a decent and feature rich unit.
  20. resurrecting an old thread... I'm about to possess a pair of RF-5's and currently have a Marantz SR8001 which has the ability to bi-amp (oooohh, ahhhh). Based on what I've ready, using the bi-amp functionality won't garner huge improvement. nor will bi-wiring. nor will replacing the stock jumpers. I have several spools of 18 and 22 AWG magnet wire on its way and am in the mood to tinker. should I upgrade the jumpers and do a single pair between the speakers and the amp? Or should I bi-wire (effectively the same thing, just using more wire). I also have shrink tubing and some techflex on the way (i love ebay, $60 for hundreds of feet of everything I've mentioned so far) for the sake of dressing up the bi-wires ..my intent was a twisted pair of 22 AWG for the highs and a twisted pair of 18 AWG for the lows, with each pair heat shrinked and then encased in the techflex. i have a bunch of banana plugs already, but am considering the bare end approach. has anything changed in 7 years? I've read everything i can find on Audiogon, Forums.Klipsch, DIYaudioprojects, AudioKarma, and EMotiva Forums for things related to my questions and while the bits and pieces of answers are there ..none of it really seems current or specific enough. it's definitely a passionate and subjective topic, which doesn't really interest me. i'm concerned more about the mechanics of my approach and then plan on tinkering from there. cheers - michael
  21. gotcha. I would troll through ebay quickly and then send an email or call the klipsch parts department and they should be able to hook you up.
  22. is there something special or non-standard about the included sub cable? if not, go to monoprice.com and shop till you drop (the cable will be less than the shipping cost, so it's your moral imperative to stock up on other audio/video goodness )
  23. elgato definitely seems to be the go-to solution for dvr needs. as far as the rest of your media is concerned, i would check out Plex. It's very slick and very efficient (it's a fork from the XMBC project)
