  1. I have the same thing with my new 4.1's, this is just using the wire that came with them. it is kindof a buzzing/ringing sound coming from my front right sat. If i turn the power switch on the speaker off, or even turn off my computer, the buzzing noise is still there, Even if i completely disconnect the pre-amp from the subwoofer the noise is still there. btw the volume of this noise doesnt change when i increase the speaker volume. My current theory is that it is either just electrical noise from the outlet, or it is being created by the amp itself. I have a normal stereo in a different room that doesnt get this noise, but who knows why, maybe it's power supply just has better electrical filters or something. Anyways i can only hear this sound if i turn ogg my computer or put my ear up real close to the sat. I dont hear it during normal use, so i'm not too worried about it, but if anyone has any ideas what causes it I would be interested out of curiousity
  2. Are we assuming its only one or the other? I agree there is probably a difference in volume level from one sound card to another, but i also have seen plenty of evidence that this is true for different windows versions using the same sound card as well
  3. I had the same problem with my new 4.1's before I adjusted the windows volume settings. After comparing with others i have come to the conclusion that windows isnt very consistent with the volume level it outputs. there are difference between different versions of windows, and also between even slightly different revisions of each version, and we all know theres something like 20 different versions of windows 98 What this all means is that windows volume settings that work for one person will be very weak for another. Some people suggest putting windows volume at 3/4, the promedia manual suggests 1/2. When i had it set to 1/2 i had to really turn the volume up to get even a normal listening level, never mind actually getting loud yet. to get the levels experienced by most people in this group i have to have both my windows main volume and wave volume at 100%. For some people these would be really bad settings and would give distorted output, but you have to realize that at this setting my version of windows is only outputing a volume that is equal to your half volume setting. What this all boils down to is there is no one setting that can be recommended for everyone, you just have to experiment to see what works with your system, maybe someday windows will fix their peice of crap software and make it more consistent, but i doubt that will happen anytime soon. Untill then i have my windows volume settings maxxed out, and my 4.1's are performing just like they should be
  4. When I asked if the volume levels are good for dvd's, I didnt mean is it loud enough, obviously thats not going to be a problem, what I meant is how is the volume level of the dialogue compared to everything else, I was wondering if I am going to have the same problem where if the dialogue is loud enough, then everything else is too loud
  5. I am considering the purchase of new speakers, and I am wondering if anyone can give me some information about the promedias. The main reason I am looking for new speakers is the poor dvd playback on my current ones, the volume of dialogue/voice is much lower everything else, so depending on what volume i set it at, either the dialogue is way too low, or everything else is way too high. I have heard this is due to the downmixing from dolby 5.1 digital. I was looking at several 5.1 systems with decoders, but i dont think i actually need a full 5.1 system as long as the volume problems are solved. Can anyone tell me if they experience this same problem with the promedias? or are the volume levels pretty good for watching dvd's?
