  1. How about a chamfer bit? A little blue tape to keep 'em from chipping.....I'd be willing to try that.
  2. I agree with Marvel. If I could only keep one pair, choosing between the Chorus and Forte's, It would be the Chorus.IMHO they still cannot hold a candle to my La Scalas.
  3. Oh......the low level bass response goes to the Chorus.......hands down winner in that respect.
  4. Well, here's what I can tell you so far.I had a good hour long listening session this morning.I used my VTL ST-150 power amp,VTL 2.5 pre amp(both of these pieces are all tube),and ran the source from my computers media player.Monster Cable I-1000 interconnects and speaker wire. One of my "reference" tracks has always been Fleatwood Macs "The Chain".(good mix of strings, vocals and some nice bass). The Forte's sounded fantastic. The strings actually make the hair on your arms stand up! The bass guitar was well defined and super clean. The overall bass response was excellant.I cannot at this time compare the two fairly. What I have found is.........they are different. The Chorus are louder, more efficient, and have a more "IN YOUR FACE" sound. My listening room is about 20 by 17.The speakers are about 10 feet apart, and I sit about 8-9 away.I ran the the full output of the amp and they sounded beautiful.I would rate both speakers at a high 8.I save the 10 for my La Scala's.I will try to get some pics up of the system soon.
  5. I do find the Chorus to be more prominent in the bass.I haven't had a real significant listening session yet,but so far I find myself going back to the Chorus. This could also be because I haven't had a chance for proper placement tweaking.I am very happy with Forte-it seems to shine on some tracks more so than the Chorus. It has a different mid/high balance that I find pleasing....especially with acoustic tracks.I will keep posting as the listening gets more involved(and louder!).
  6. Just picked up the Forte's for $299.00, I figured I couldn't pass them up.I hooked up the Forte's to my VTL ST-150 and started listening.First impression- they sounded a little thin on bass- maybe a little bright. As I listened longer I warmed up to them.I love them on stringed instruments.I fired up the Chorus II's,running them through a Yamaha M-85 running in class A. I was able to turn down the output on the Yamaha to make up for difference in efficiency and ran both speakers at the same time(through the same Pre amp and source of course). The Chorus have a nice full upper bass- lower mid range, but the Fortes filled the highs nicely.Great combo. I find myself switching speakers almost track to track depending on what I'm listening to.Any thoughts on this comparisom??
  7. Hi everyone! I was just wondering if anybody out there had heard of a VTL class A upgrade.I noticed a set of Manley monoblocks with a class A triode upgrade for sale and it reminded me that I may have heard that the same upgrade was available for VTL products as well.Any info would be helpfull. Thanks!!!
  8. Here is something real simple to check.Try checking your speaker wires. If one of the speaker wires are hooked with polarity reversed, you will not hear a lot of bass in the listening area.
  9. I haven't had a chance to do the mids yet.I picked up the speakers last weekend from Gregg357 and he had the tweeter diaphrams.I would like to do the mids as well, and I am seriously considering crossovers. From what I have read, everything from Crites is excellant.I am looking forward to future upgrades.
  10. I installed my new diaphrams in my Chorus II's last weekend.Slightly smoother top end now.I am still working on speaker placement........I am not "seeing" as wide a soundstage as I was with my KG-4's!I guess it could be crossovers,or a placement issue.
  11. Just picked up a used VTL 150,could probably use some tubes.I am hoping for some advice on tube brands and power tube options. Also, would an input/driver tube upgrade/change be a good idea?
  12. I will make an effort to get the pics.I have to re-arrange the rack first.......I put the amp on the very top shelf where the turntable goes!! Couldn't wait to power up.I think I will run a post specifically on the tubes for this amp.
  13. Picked up the VTL ST-150 last night. It has 6550 A's in it right now.It is listed to run 6550 C's.It sounds incredible, but do you think if I swap out to 6550 C's it will sound a lot better? I guess these tubes have quite a few hours on them, but I don;t think they are at the end of their service life.Any thoughts on tube brands/types?
  14. Looks like it will be VTL.I will be grabbing an ST-150 on Wednesday.Picked it up on A-Gon for a real good price. Can't wait to plug it in!!
  15. I did replace the diaphrams, quick easy job. They sound smoother to me.I have not done any real wattage through them yet though I can hardly wait!If all goes as planned I would like to do the crossovers as well, then perhaps the mid diaphrams.
  16. I plan on doing mine this morning.(Chorus II's).Is there a break in time?
  17. Hi Coytee....thanks for your response!Yes, I do have the EQ.I am thinking that the crossovers are shot....the blown tweeter...the bad cabs......can't wait to get moving on these.
  18. Hey everyone! I am sitting on a pair of these impossible to find speakers. These models have a 1 inch "super dome" tweeter, not the horn.Of course they have the VMR (vented mid range),and a 10 inch woofer. This model does use the EQ that EV put out for a few of the Interface line.I am writing this post to try to get some feedback on what to do with these.1 of the tweeters is blown, but should be able to get it replaced. The cabs and grills are rough......really rough. They have been sitting in a damp and moldy basement for 25 years now.Heres the thing-I don't want to get rid of them.I guess I am hoping that some one reading this will an EV owner or know a way to get parts. Also, given the fact that in my 10 years or so actively searching the 'net I have never seen a pair of these for sale........NEVER!I have seen plenty with the horn tweeter, but not one pair with the dome like these.I will try to get pics soon.
  19. OK.....I finally picked up a tube pre last fall(VTL 2.5)used from A-gon.I have it running through my Yamaha M-80,powering mostly my KG-4's.(La Scalas are only rarely enjoyed)The pre amp has made such a dramatic improvement in what I am hearing now,I am beginning to look at tube power amps as well.First off-I like it loud.......real loud.I listen mostly to rock, but enjoy a lot the "unplugged" stuff. So,I guess that I am asking for peoples input on any of these amps.I have been on the lookout for the VTL mb 450's down the VTL line to the mb150's.I just saw the Canary amps this week for sale, and I have always had my eye on the BAT gear.I like the fact that the VTL and Canary are triode/tetrode switchable, but also like the fact that the BAT gear is all class A,and seems to be well respected.Any input would be helpfull. Thanks everyone!
  20. I have both the M-80 and the M-85.I run in class A only for serious listening sessions and have not had a problem in 24 years of use.Try running them with a tube pre amp!
  21. I forgot to mention it,but the next weekend I bought the preamp(used on Agon). It has really changed everything.I am listening to everything I own and hearing it for the first time. For now I am sticking with the ss power amp.I am already looking at higher end preamps.I'm Mark-and I'm a tube-a-holic(pre amp anyway)!
  22. Unfortunately my C's have seen better days.I will hold on to them in the hopes of bringing them back up to par.I have a blown tweeter. It is the "super dome" I believe. If any one knows where I could get these refurbished I would be gratefull. The cabs are rough and the grill fabric is really rough.
  23. I picked up a used pair of La Scalas this past summer and soon after discovered this forum.I had always owned solid state gear(somewhat high end Yamaha seperates).Everyone from the forum seemed to love tube gear,so I started researching.I went to a local audio dealer to listen for a while and I actually ended up with a "loaner" set for the weekend. The salesman suggested that since I had a decent amp already-try the tube pre with my Yamaha M-80,then try the tube amp.(the loaner gear was a VTL ST 150,and a 2.5 preamp.)I tried the tube preamp with my ss amp first. It was incredible! It seemed like the back wall was removed and a huge stage opened up.The mids and highs sounded like nothing I've ever heard. The bass was slamming me in the chest and was perfect.I heard every individual bass note as a different string being plucked.I then tried the all tube setup.I have to say this first.I made a really good investment about 25 years ago.My Yamaha (to my ears) kicked ***.When I heard the tube amp,the highs to me sounded a little more shrill, possibly even distorted. The bass was tight-but had none of the impact.Granted-the soundstage opened up even more-but to me did not sound like an improvement over my Yamaha. To be fair I was running the Yamaha in its "auto class A".The Vtl was switched to triode.I probably should have switched to tetrode and tried the more powerfull mode, but I figured I would listen in the most pure mode available.Has anybody out there experienced a similar trial?
  24. Does any one have any opinions/experience with these amps?I have had a M-85 for about 23 years now.I recently picked up a M-80 Amp,C-80 preamp,T-80 tuner,CDC-905 CD changer,2 Nakamichi RX-202 Cassette decks,Technics SL-92 turntable,KEF 104/2 speakers, and a real nice Yamaha component rack.I paid $500.00 for everything. The Preamp and Amp need at least a good cleaning, the speakers may need reconing and haven't checked the cassette decks yet.I think it was a good deal, even if I have to spend a couple of bucks. The KEF's may need a lot of loot to get up to par though. The main reason I picked up the whole lot was for the Yamaha seperates.I am thinking of possible Bi-Amping(or bridging, but can't seem to find out if it is safe).So-if anybody has any feedback or thoughts on the Yamaha gear it would be greatly appreciated.
  25. Hi everybody.I have a Yamaha M-85 amp.I was wondering if any of you could tell me how to bridge it for higher wattage in mono. The reason I ask this-I have a chance to pick up another one. They operate in pure class A up to 30 watts.I do not know if the class A rating will double or not.I have been looking into tube amplification or really high end ss,but I think I will take some time(and save up a lot of money)before I make my choice. But for now the second Yamaha-If I can bridge them-is a good way to buy time without spending a lot of money. Thanks to any who reply.
