I've always been a form follows function kind of guy. Engineering school does that to you. I would say, however, that my oiled oak Chorus and Forte's look fantabulous with my handbuilt mission oak living room furniture and a nice oriental rug. I guess it's all in what you are looking for. jhawk, I have not heard the Chorus II's, but the Klipsch specs say they go lower than my Chorus I's. I believe it is 45 Hz to 39 Hz in favor of the II's. I'm not sure if you'll miss 5-6Hz, but you may. The other glaring differences are the I's exponential horns vs. the II's tractix, the I's ported enclosure, the II's have PRs...etc. The Chorus I's sound great to my ears and from what I have learned the II's sound very similar. I have the Chorus/ForteII/Academy setup you are looking for and I love it dearly. 5-Channel stereo is sheer bliss, with the Forte's adding to the overall enjoyment. I don't think you can go wrong either way. Hi guys, I'm finally getting around to doing something about the pathetic system in my '93 Grand Cherokee Laredo. I am leaning heavily towards Diamond Audio M561/M551 components set up in a 3-way config, with an Audiobahn amplifier, and a JL Audio Stealthbox sub powered by an old Power Acoustik 120W. Here's the thing. You guys know the sound I like, and you are at this bulletin board because of it The selection of gear in my little section of the world is limited to what is at Circuit City, HH Gregg, or online. I heard the Diamonds before moving here, and they have been my car audio reference. I have not been into Car Audio since I bought a house and got the HT bug. As fast as companies are merged, bought and sold in this sector I want to be sure I'm not buying Kraco or Sparkomatic with a previously high end nametag. I am looking to build a system with a more refined sound, not a boomy Limp Bizkit kind of setup (even though it might find it's way in there sometimes). I listen mainly to Rock (Tool, Soundgarden, NIN, Creed, that kind of stuff) but I listen to Classical (Tchaikovski, Bach, Grieg) when I'm on a long haul to keep the mind mellow..... Any advice is very much appreciated. I grew up in a household full of 4 Bose 901 Series I's and large Carver amplifiers. Even though I have chosen "the Klipsch sound", I certainly am thankful that my father had a system of some quality that enabled me to fall in love with this hobby and the music that we sometimes listen to in between moving around our gear. I am no fan of the acoustimass, but blind brand loyalty and "fan boy" reactionism to their name is just plain silly. If Klipsch started turning out nothing but ProMedia systems, I would first cherish my current gear, but second pick up and look for another place to spend my money when the upgrade bug hit. Jhawk, I was recently on the quest that you are now undertaking (finding nice OO Forte II's). It's frustrating finding the right set, as they all seem to have water marks from plants, bad bases, or something else wrong. I was lucky enough to find a set at a very reasonable price from an esteemed fellow board member, and could not be happier with my purchase. They are well worth the wait. I plan to re-veneer the Chorus I's, and my Forte II's eventually so they all match up anyway, so the slight blems that are there will not be visible. Vahorns...If you have the opportunity to buy both, why not do it, compare the two sets, and depending on what you paid originally, sell the set you like least for a tidy profit. Just a thought I have not heard the Cornwalls, but the Forte's are very nice. I would say they have somewhere in between the sound of the Heritage stuff and the recently discontinued KLF stuff. Not as much slam as the Legends, but cleaner bass that still gets low. They are different in the mids and highs from the Heritage, but lower bass than everything but the KHorns (and the Cornwalls maybe), and I think the mids and highs hold their own pretty well against the older stuff. As mentioned earlier, the Forte's, while in demand, are still under-appreciated. I think they stand up very well to and sometimes surpass the Heritage Series (excluding the KHorns), and all of the RF and KLF stuff. They're just different is all...... Congrats on a wise decision. I am VERY very happy with my Chorus I's. I added the Forte II's in the back, and I don't miss my crappy old subwoofer at all (especially in 5 channel stereo). I wish I had the luxury of a seperate 2 channel setup right now, as I would build a nice little ST-70 clone so I could hear what all this tube stuff is about. I hope I never see a set of Cornwalls, muchless hear them. Well, If you are ever up near Indianapolis or Kokomo, and need some convincing for the Forte or Chorus, you are free to stop by and have a listen. I just saw your signature. I'm surprised TTK didn't remind you of the big KSP-400's or KSP-300's. They are a perfect match for your center and surrounds. Maybe you could finish off your home theater with the KSP stuff, and start your tube fetish off right with some of the "old school" stuff. Crash, I'm not all that good with audio terminology like "soundstage" or "depth" so I'll describe my perceived differences between the two setups in whatever words I can come up with. I have never heard my Forte II's or my Chorus I's in the same room as the reference setup, so bear that in mind. The Forte II with Academy as center is a very good match, as the factory intended. The Forte's make a lot of bass for their size, a bit better I think than my Chorus, and comparable to the RF-7's. The Chorus just make reproducing the tough stuff seem so easy...that's why they get to stay up front. I like the mids and highs of my Chorus and Forte better than I liked the RF7 - RC7 series. The RF's just have a mellower sound (with the exception of the kick drum crack type stuff). I can't really think of anything bad to say about the RF7's. I think that they compare very favorably to my Forte II's and Chorus, and I would not call one better than the other...just different. They came in a very close second to my Chorus when I was thinking about upgrading my mains. I stuck with the "Classic" series or "Late Heritage" if you will, and couldn't be more pleased. The up side of the RF's is that you get that new speaker look and feel. Shipping the big old boxes has made FedEx's insurance company and me very sad in the past, something that could have been avoided if I had bought new. I guess it comes down to this. If you like the sound of the RF's, money is not a consideration, and space is....go for the Reference series. If you like your Klipsch a little more "old school", want to save a few bucks (even with those "outrageous" prices on Ebay or Audiogon), and space is no consideration....get the Forte or Chorus and an Academy. You'll be happy you did (either way).
