  1. I've always been a form follows function kind of guy. Engineering school does that to you. I would say, however, that my oiled oak Chorus and Forte's look fantabulous with my handbuilt mission oak living room furniture and a nice oriental rug. I guess it's all in what you are looking for. 4. jhawk, I have not heard the Chorus II's, but the Klipsch specs say they go lower than my Chorus I's. I believe it is 45 Hz to 39 Hz in favor of the II's. I'm not sure if you'll miss 5-6Hz, but you may. The other glaring differences are the I's exponential horns vs. the II's tractix, the I's ported enclosure, the II's have PRs...etc. The Chorus I's sound great to my ears and from what I have learned the II's sound very similar. I have the Chorus/ForteII/Academy setup you are looking for and I love it dearly. 5-Channel stereo is sheer bliss, with the Forte's adding to the overall enjoyment. 5. Hi guys, I'm finally getting around to doing something about the pathetic system in my '93 Grand Cherokee Laredo. I am leaning heavily towards Diamond Audio M561/M551 components set up in a 3-way config, with an Audiobahn amplifier, and a JL Audio Stealthbox sub powered by an old Power Acoustik 120W. Here's the thing. You guys know the sound I like, and you are at this bulletin board because of it The selection of gear in my little section of the world is limited to what is at Circuit City, HH Gregg, or online. I heard the Diamonds before moving here, and they have been my car audio reference. I have not been into Car Audio since I bought a house and got the HT bug. As fast as companies are merged, bought and sold in this sector I want to be sure I'm not buying Kraco or Sparkomatic with a previously high end nametag. I am looking to build a system with a more refined sound, not a boomy Limp Bizkit kind of setup (even though it might find it's way in there sometimes). I listen mainly to Rock (Tool, Soundgarden, NIN, Creed, that kind of stuff) but I listen to Classical (Tchaikovski, Bach, Grieg) when I'm on a long haul to keep the mind mellow..... Any advice is very much appreciated. I know Boston Acoustics and MB Quart make good stuff, but I seem to remember liking the Diamond sound better than either one. ------------------ Klipsch Chorus I Mains Klipsch Academy Center Klipsch Forte II surrounds Marantz SR19EX Receiver Yamaha 5 CD Changer Mitsubishi WS-55807 55" HDTV Playstation 2 for games/DVD

  7. I grew up in a household full of 4 Bose 901 Series I's and large Carver amplifiers. Even though I have chosen "the Klipsch sound", I certainly am thankful that my father had a system of some quality that enabled me to fall in love with this hobby and the music that we sometimes listen to in between moving around our gear. I am no fan of the acoustimass, but blind brand loyalty and "fan boy" reactionism to their name is just plain silly. If Klipsch started turning out nothing but ProMedia systems, I would first cherish my current gear, but second pick up and look for another place to spend my money when the upgrade bug hit. 9. Jhawk, I was recently on the quest that you are now undertaking (finding nice OO Forte II's). It's frustrating finding the right set, as they all seem to have water marks from plants, bad bases, or something else wrong. I was lucky enough to find a set at a very reasonable price from an esteemed fellow board member, and could not be happier with my purchase. They are well worth the wait. I plan to re-veneer the Chorus I's, and my Forte II's eventually so they all match up anyway, so the slight blems that are there will not be visible. Vahorns...If you have the opportunity to buy both, why not do it, compare the two sets, and depending on what you paid originally, sell the set you like least for a tidy profit. Just a thought I have not heard the Cornwalls, but the Forte's are very nice. I would say they have somewhere in between the sound of the Heritage stuff and the recently discontinued KLF stuff. Not as much slam as the Legends, but cleaner bass that still gets low. They are different in the mids and highs from the Heritage, but lower bass than everything but the KHorns (and the Cornwalls maybe), and I think the mids and highs hold their own pretty well against the older stuff. As mentioned earlier, the Forte's, while in demand, are still under-appreciated. I think they stand up very well to and sometimes surpass the Heritage Series (excluding the KHorns), and all of the RF and KLF stuff. They're just different is all...... 10. Congrats on a wise decision. I am VERY very happy with my Chorus I's. I added the Forte II's in the back, and I don't miss my crappy old subwoofer at all (especially in 5 channel stereo). I wish I had the luxury of a seperate 2 channel setup right now, as I would build a nice little ST-70 clone so I could hear what all this tube stuff is about. I hope I never see a set of Cornwalls, muchless hear them. I'm afraid I'll have to move the furniture out if my setup gets any bigger Maybe the Corns would fit in the workshop....... ------------------ Klipsch Chorus I Mains Klipsch Academy Center Klipsch Forte II surrounds Marantz SR19EX Receiver Yamaha 5 CD Changer Mitsubishi WS-55807 55" HDTV Playstation 2 for games/DVD

I'm surprised TTK didn't remind you of the big KSP-400's or KSP-300's. They are a perfect match for your center and surrounds. 14. Crash, I'm not all that good with audio terminology like "soundstage" or "depth" so I'll describe my perceived differences between the two setups in whatever words I can come up with. I have never heard my Forte II's or my Chorus I's in the same room as the reference setup, so bear that in mind. The Forte II with Academy as center is a very good match, as the factory intended. The Forte's make a lot of bass for their size, a bit better I think than my Chorus, and comparable to the RF-7's. The Chorus just make reproducing the tough stuff seem so easy...that's why they get to stay up front. I like the mids and highs of my Chorus and Forte better than I liked the RF7 - RC7 series. The RF's just have a mellower sound (with the exception of the kick drum crack type stuff). I can't really think of anything bad to say about the RF7's. I think that they compare very favorably to my Forte II's and Chorus, and I would not call one better than the other...just different. They came in a very close second to my Chorus when I was thinking about upgrading my mains. I stuck with the "Classic" series or "Late Heritage" if you will, and couldn't be more pleased. The up side of the RF's is that you get that new speaker look and feel. Shipping the big old boxes has made FedEx's insurance company and me very sad in the past, something that could have been avoided if I had bought new. I guess it comes down to this. If you like the sound of the RF's, money is not a consideration, and space is....go for the Reference series. If you like your Klipsch a little more "old school", want to save a few bucks (even with those "outrageous" prices on Ebay or Audiogon), and space is no consideration....get the Forte or Chorus and an Academy. You'll be happy you did (either way). 17. I too love my Chorus I's. The cabinets could use some freshening up, but the sounds they make bring a smile to my face every time. On a side note, I know there are some individuals on this board who have Chorus I's and Chorus II's in the same house. I am curious as to which ones you prefer as your mains, and why. The Chorus II's are the "correct" mains for my Forte II surrounds and Academy center. There is a set for sale within 45 minutes of my house. I have Chorus I's not II's. You see my dilemna. 19. djk, Yes, I am doing the board layout, enclosure design, power supply circuitry, some active filtering, and other additional tidbits for the amplifier portion of this project. I wasn't trying to confuse anyone. As far as EMI and RFI go...not on this project. It's only a two credit hour class, and I have 4 other classes to be concerned with. I'm just trying to make the best of a situation..... That was a good catch on the 2.83 V/1m rather than 1W/1m. There is a way to change that number on WinISD and I must have done it. quote: and while true that raising the cut-off frequency 1/3 octave will halve the box size, it will need a different driver Why is a different driver necessary in this instance? Is this because of the Fs of the driver? Would it be accurate to say that the enclosure should always be tuned to Fs for whatever driver is to be used in said enclosure, or does this just provide peak efficiency? 21. mdeneen, Thanks for your clarifications. There are many things I am sure I am not taking into account, but I guess that's part of the learning process. I thought I read somewhere that a good "middle of the road" tuning for a sub enclosure falls somewhere between the two graphs I posted (around .65 to .70). Your remark seems to verify this. Something else that sticks in my head is that "room gain" tends to add quite a bit of gain to the frequencies around FS. Wouldn't that make a flatter gain curve more desirable? If there is one bit of information I have gained in reading this post, it's that I need to do a bit more reading. Any and all comments on the subject are appreciated. ------------------ Klipsch Chorus I Mains Klipsch Academy Center Klipsch Forte II surrounds Marantz SR19EX Receiver Yamaha 5 CD Changer Mitsubishi WS-55807 55" HDTV Playstation 2 for games/DVD This message has been edited by speedbump on 02-02-2002 at 11:59 PM
  22. I have always read DJK's posts in the past and found them informative. I am disappointed that he felt the need to call my scholastic integrity into question. If this were a design project, rather than an arbitrary circuit used to teach schematic capture and layout software, I would agree whole-heartedly that his "Cliff's notes" analogy would apply. In addition, I am the first one to admit that I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to enclosure design, that's why I asked for help in the first place. **rant over** So let's see if I am catching on.... If enclosure size is halved, SPL is decreased by 3dB. This 3dB drop could then be compensated for by doubling amplifier power? I'm not sure if I am getting this next part. Is the 8:1 ratio you mentioned the increase in size for an enclosure tuned to 20Hz as opposed to an enclosure tuned to 40Hz? 20Hz^3 = 8000 40Hz^3 = 64000 64000:8000 = 8:1 If this is what was meant, does that mean I could reduce the size of my original enclosure to 4 cubic feet from 8 cubic feet if I change my cut off frequency to 20 Hz? 16.1Hz^3 = 4096 20Hz^3 = 8000 8000:4096 = 1.96:1 8 ft^3/1.96 = 4.08 ft^3 If I type the new frequency and enclosure size into WinISD, my gain graph grows a little hump from about 28Hz up to over 100Hz. It was my impression that it was desirable to keep this graph as flat as possible, which is how I got my first numbers. I have attached the new graph as well as the old one to show the difference. Port length is a bit fuzzy as well. I am going by the "Vent mach" number in winISD. This seems like the wrong way to go about this, but I have not found any good info on this subject yet. Thanks again to all that have helped. 23. djk, First and foremost, let me apologize for being much less experienced in speaker design than you are. This in itself warrants self loathing on a grand scale. Add to this great transgression the audacity to use a reference design from a semiconductor manufacturer, for a class whose main purpose is to teach circuit board layout and construction techniques using the Cadence software package, and you really have me pegged. The entire class must build this circuit, and I will pass your recommendations for the Purdue syllabus on to those in charge. The calculations for enclosure size were based on what little I had learned about the software I was using, the size of the amplifier I was required to build, and what I thought looked like a flat gain curve. Thanks for your help..... 24. Hello all, I am in the process of designing my own subwoofer from the ground up, with the exception of building my own driver. I am building a Class D switching amplifier based on the National Semiconductor LM4651 & LM4652 Overture design. This should allow me to push approximately 125W RMS continuous into a 4 ohm load. I have looked at several drivers, including the Shiva Mark II, The Dayton Titanic, The Dayton Titanic II, and the Peerless SWR308. After plugging in the Thiele Small parameters (most of them anyway), It looks as though I am going to use the Dayton Titanic 1200. It seems to perform the best given my amplifier size, but requires a larger enclosure than the other drivers do. Here's the rub. I have very little experience with the software (WinISD) I am using to get enclosure size, port width and length, MaxSPL, Etcetera....and I would love it if one of you more experienced SW builders could verify my data. For the Dayton Titanic 1200 Subwoofer my data is as follows. QTS = .41 QMS = 8.23 QES = .43 VAS = 280.2 liters XMAX = .014 meters FS = 16.26 Hz RE = 3.66 Ohms LE = 1.96 Z = 4 Ohms SPL = 90dB PE = 350 Watts BL = 9.47 DIA = .24 meters SD = .046 square meters I would be using an enclosure with a volume of approximately 8 cubic feet, with 2 4" ports with a length of 22" each. This gives me a theoretical -3db point of approximately 16 Hz and a max SPL of 111db at 125 W/1 m. Does this sound right? I would use a larger amp, but I am building this one as an engineering project for school, so I may as well use it for now. Enclosure would be made of 3/4" MDF, ports would be PVC. Any help you could provide is greatly appreciated. Alternate driver selections for higher SPL and smaller enclosure size are also welcome. 25. The Heresy II's had the same midrange as the Forte I's, and are a bit smaller so one just might fit I used to use a KLF-C7 as a center for my Chorus I's and it sounded pretty good. Let's just say the midrange is a bit more aggressive than that of the Chorus I's. With a little work I would have been very happy with it. My Academy is great, and it's an improvement over the KLF-C7 with my speakers, but I don't think I would have paid today's going price for one. I just happened to find a guy who had an Academy and wanted a KLF-C7...my lucky day. I have not heard the KV series centers, so I'm no help there, but I have heard good things around here about the KV4 .
