    What I Got Today!

I went ahead with a NUC and installed Roon's ROCK OS. It has been, as the name implies, rock solid. I work in IT all day (and night) so I like a no fuss solution. Roon needs decent hardware and I'd say a SSD is a good idea for the OS. Using an old PC you retired from other uses is not the best idea nor is trying to run the server over wireless. I installed the NUC motherboard in a case that was all heat-sink, runs silently with no fan and is actually quite a bit cooler. The ROON interface is not perfect but it seems peerless in my estimation. That and a minor tweak of the ROON DSP EQ settings to smooth out the La Scalas has made me a pretty happy listener! Wait, you have a Sonictransporter? I'd think that would work pretty good for ROON.
  2. Yes, and go to the doctor and they can't tell you how much a procedure is going to cost and after the fact you can't even tell for what you are being billed if you get a bill at all or maybe just a statement that includes who knows what portion of what was done. I stated that poorly but it probably makes more sense than my last medical bill.
  3. I'm guilty of thinking that Californian's can take it. I know my friends and family who live there don't care what I say or think. Every state has something we can make fun of for that matter. I suggest we should probably make fun of our own state more. If the company you work for doesn't have differential pay based on where you live then it can make financial sense to live in the cheapest location possible. Some of us are working too much to really benefit much from where we live beyond our homes where we spend most of the rest of our time. Different priorities at different stages of life... eventually I won't care about the quality of schools as much but I will still be interested in the property taxes.
  4. Not illegal... just poor fashion sense.
  5. Joe is helpful and had decent prices https://www.joewoodworker.com/ How much veneer depends on what you want to cover on the La Scala. Cost varies greatly with how exotic you want to go. Nice Walnut isn't that expensive. I love Cherry! With mine, I hope to just cover the sides and the top. I'm going to leave the front and back black because I like the look and also so I don't have to mess with fitting the dog house opening. I would go with 2 sheets of 4 x 8 paper backed veneer with the grain running long ways so the grain will go up the side, across the top and down the other side. This is a bit close on the length but I cut the pieces just a little bit long so I can trim so that the grain flows nicely from one section to the next. You will want to sand down to raw wood. Level any depressions with fill (I used Bondo). I liked working with Heat Lock glue. You might experiment with a smaller project just to get the hang of it. I think Heresy's were a nice first project and only took one sheet of veneer.
  6. The need for break in was definitely true for the higher voltage application in my amps. It took almost 500 hours for the grain (very slight) to finally disappear. https://www.v-cap.com/tftf-capacitors.php Also, re: Jeff and his suggestions on caps for crossovers as of a few years ago - He was very quick to express his affection for the Jupiter caps. The old versions were being replaced so nobody had much experience with the new ones yet. I already had been very impressed with Jupiter (both high and lower voltage applications) so I had no hesitation scarfing up what he offered of the old versions to rebuild a few networks. Almost every crossover I have uses Jupiter caps. No @Deang, I haven't touched your networks... they still have the OIMP Vcaps. @mboxler brought up a good idea for a new thread! I love to learn! I'm old enough that I forget stuff sometimes and now I can learn the same stuff over and over.
  7. That board underneath needs to be maple... tsk tsk
  8. Turn off the air and close it up in the room with a tube amp playing some tunes.
  9. Nice ! Somebody's going to have a lot of fun with this!
  10. If a loved one said my speakers were "big and ugly" I'd have to bite my tongue so hard it would bleed! There are so many responses to that I don't know where I'd start but most of them would mean I'd finish in divorce court.
  11. You mean the picture of you almost beating him at the long jump at the Olympics in 68?
  12. Of course not! Sometimes I see a line and I like to see how far I can leap past. Bob Beamon’s got nuttin on me.
  13. So is he for or against? 😲
  14. Couple in my collection: Soundtrack - Mysterious Island: The Complete Bernard Herrmann Motion Picture Score ; William Stromberg and The Moscow Symphony Orchestra Soundtrack - Vertigo- Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Bernard Herrmann; Joel McNeely Royal Scottish National Orchestra Fun to use when playing, "Name that Movie." Also fun to play loud! The neighbors wouldn't know quite what to think.
  15. Oh you gotta give Hitchcock a chance... especially the earlier ones I think. "The Trouble with Harry" is funny yet a tiny bit dark. Sinbad and Journey to the center of the earth were more exciting in my youth I suppose.

    Sit/Stand Desk

Have a couple of these at work. https://www.varidesk.com/ They work better than I imagined. Very nice and easy to raise and lower... just set on existing desk. The idea is to alternate standing with sitting. Another thought about standing... point your toes straight ahead. It almost feels like you are standing pigeon toed but it takes pressure off the hips and lets you stand straighter.
  17. Music can really become an integral part of a movie. I have a hard time listening to a whole soundtrack of a movie. I usually have to go watch the movie after hearing the music for a while. I really like Bernard Herrmann! Kind of surprised nobody mentioned him. If you've seen any Hitchcock movies you've heard him most likely. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Herrmann There are some really good recordings out there too.
  18. Getting the room set right was the biggest improvement for me. I'm still working on it though... I know I'm not 100% there yet. Listening to Ethan Winer's audio makes me think his rooms are way over treated
  19. Grandma took three fingers of water for her highball. She’d only have one or two.
  20. If TOO "life like" is wrong I don't want to be right! If people ask, I usually refer to myself as "a bit of an audio nut."
  21. Regarding the Fastracs, I don't know what you guys are talking about them REDUCING volume a couple of dB compared to the original horn. My experience was that they were slightly louder and needed to be reduced a few dB. Or maybe I'm just remembering the K600's in the Cornwalls but I think I remember a similar experience with the La Scalas when I swapped them out. BUT either way, using Fastracs made me alter the networks. Is there anything I didn't try? Now I'm settled on the Eliptracs and I'm pretty happy but with the BMS drivers they required a larger drop.
  22. Whatever is growing on the stuff under my kids beds is likely keeping their immune systems active.
