To understand China , is not easy -

I travel to China  6 times per year and my last trip was in January , what people say on the news here in the USA and the actual truth is very different , people think that China is in a severe dictatorship and people are locked up , like in jails , etc , this is false propaganda , actually there were more freedoms in China than in North America   the police do not hand out tickets , they tell you what to do or not to do , that's it  , the Chinese were very effective in closing all hot spots and stopping the outbreaks where they were the most prevalent , they cleaned everything - the roads , the buildings , the public transit areas ,  everything /in north america and europe , they did nothing to that degree - 0-

-Now , on the other hand ,  they downplayed the death numbers -but it is their policy to not give out any information , while in north america and Europe , all is reported by the news  , in China , the state censors all info that they deem to be detrimental to China's security -

Here's a youtube video showing what happens in China when you don't listen to what they tell to do:

so if China has 5 times the USA population --------your numbers would be astronomical-----4    million    you see , your numbers are incorrect - you can't use 1 example to judge another -every situation is different -

I believe that you are making my point: Infection rates for this virus are varied worldwide.

China locked down an area of 36 million people very quickly once they realized what they were dealing with as they have the ability, being a dictatorship, to do so. Same way that they can lie about the actual numbers of anything/everything they want. That said; who knows what their true numbers are here? I doubt the announced number of ~80,000 infections is correct.

The US population is approximately 329,000,000. Italy’s is approximately 60,000,000... with at least 143,600 confirmed pandemic cases. On a per capita basis the number infected would have to hit more than 787,000 persons  in the US before equaling Italy’s 143,600.

Is this the wrong place to ask? Corona related

Son attends Texas A&M College Station.
He lives in apartment not affiliated with A&M except that the apt. corp. leased the dirt for 30 years from TAMU.
He (we) signed a lease for one year 8/2019 to 8/2020.

He decided to move from a 2 bd to a 4 bd to share with his high school buds for Fall 2020 term (another year).
Discount if you sign lease early on the new place early so I did. BS charges but that's another story.

During spring break in March ( date?) the virus hit and in person classes were canceled.

Now that there are only online classes I am paying $700 a month for the apt and the boy is living at home.
The complex refuses to refund/reduce current lease.
The complex refuses to nullify upcoming 8/2020 -8/2021 lease
Word (web rumor) is that TAMU summer 2020 will be online only and those courses have been loaded.

Do I even stand a chance of getting a refund or lease(s) nullified due to My Corona?

I'd pay a $ or 2  to our forum litigators

You signed a lease. What does it say wrt force majeure?

Who was it that said “the needs of the many outweigh the needs of a few”

ANY leader must consider this before making ANY decision.

China’s feelings were spared so that the world could weep.

Stalin in the midst of the great famine in the Ukraine is said to have stated: "The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic."

In light of the relatively small numbers of Wuhan Virus statistics reported by Russian officials I wonder if his current successor, Putin, has taken another page out of the old Stalin Playbook?

a WHO must be able to  force the Chinese to adopt better hygiene , and even to close their borders  when they have new outbreaks --- the WHO  allowed the virus to go worldwide instead of closing off China until  there was a medical way to combat it -  basically we are sitting ducks , and guinea pigs -

The problem with doing nothing. Revamp, revise and reboot or completely defund is it has the clowns at the WHO a pass on the way they've run the circus. This allows them to think that their behaviour which has resulted in millions of sick, spending Trillions of dollars the world does not have, etc. is acceptable. It is not!

    Devil out!! Comes to mind.

Two spots are planted, three are producing Asparagus beds, and I still need to till one for some peppers that are still babies. I tried hay bales for the last two years, but had 14 yards of good topsoil (lots of roots to pick out) dumped on that plot and built a raised bed.

Lucky. We got another three inches of snow overnight. Further putting back my early planting schedule.

I saw something yesterday about that leader for WHO claiming that the criticism of him is racist.

You can't fix stupid. I would call him a communist and a lackey. He's had a lot of practice in covering up Cholera epidemics in the past in both the Sudan and Ethiopia. The New York Times warned their readers about this in 2017 when he was in contention for the WHO job.

A bit of a rhetorical question....  with Crohn's, I take some stuff that is supposed to calm my immune system so it doesn't attack my internals (or something like that)

What I think I've heard is the Crono virus itself doesn't kill someone but it causes some systemic attack within the body and that is what is deadly (I may be wrong but I think that's what I heard)

Which has the wife & I wondering.....if someone is on immune-suppresents, would that give them a slight advantage if they were exposed??

The downside is the one I take (Stelara) isn't inexpensive.  I'd not want to (and wouldn't) pay for that out of pocket.

Crohn's is an autoimmune disease. You are already compromised when you have an autoimmune disease. As such, mathematically you are greater risk of becoming ill as a result of this then you are of catching the virus, assuming you are taken all the recommended precautions to avoid contracting it.

not a fan of this being in the media.  operational readiness is a security concern. it benefits nobody but potential enemies to have this information.

I would say one of our greatest current enemies has already done as much damage to our economies as any military attack could. And then some. They also have blood on their hands for their deliberate misinformation and secrecy wrt a raging virus. Nice to know the WHO has their back. Hopefully, western nations will defund the WHO unless and until they are completely reconstituted as something other than the lackeys they've become.

Having been involved with critical care stuff very similar to this I am not surprised by its existence but I am stunned witnessing its ferocity. Professionally I knew it could happen but seeing it happen is quite something viscerally different. I do hope that covid survivors provide ample and detailed testimony so that every skeptic can lay their questions to rest. We hide our sick so well that most people cannot grasp serious illness which leads to antivaxxers, et al. For this to be a true ‘game’ changer humanity must recognize its severity so that policies can be placed in proper priority. So for me personally I did not require this event to be wary and cautious. But will others now understand how fragile their existence is? Of that I am skeptical.

It all happened before and it will happen again.

Never underestimate our inability to learn from our own history: The Spanish Flu, the war to end all wars, the Holocaust being just three recent examples.

It seems every couple of generations we screw up something all over again.

  13. We've always had a several months supply of staples on hand. Also, always a full deep freezer and two refrigerators, with side or bottom mount freezers (also kept pretty full). Something passed down from my paternal side of the family.

I've been in the habit of properly and frequently washing my hands and have only had to increase this slightly during the current pandemic.

If we did nothing as they did in the 1918 flu epidemic we would have 300 million people dead worldwide.

It would be a mistake to say that nothing was done. The Electron Microscope did not exist before its development in Germany in the mid to late 1930's. Microscopes, as they existed in 1917 through 1920 did not have the resolution to see the Avian Virus that is suspected to be responsible for the Greatest Pandemic of the 20th Century.

People did know enough to wear masks (primarily made from gauze),  practice frequent hand washing and distance themselves from others. Some remote villages remained unaffected entirely. This was accomplished by putting out armed guards 24/7 some distance away to prevent the entry and exit of all who wanted to come into or leave and return.

  15. Damn lies and statistics. ~50% of those testing positive for the Wuhan Virus in Canada reside in the Province of Quebec. This in spite that the population of 8.3 million, which is approximately double the population of Alberta and almost 60% of the population of Ontario. Most likely this reflects the fact that Alberta's population is an average of 5 years younger than that in Quebec (median age) and a relatively large number of those living in Quebec smoke or vape at greater daily rates (i.e. more cigarettes consumed per person/day). Like large areas of Europe some people seem to be unaware of cancer and it's relationship to smoking and other disease susceptibility.

A German research project in a hot-spot did that and published the results on April 9. Only 15 per cent had been infected. Being a hot-spot, they had expected it to be much higher. This proofs that the herd immunity approach is not successful. Also, death rate is only 0.4 per cent, much lower than expected.
