  1. The same Darling. My amps are not 100% my designs. I am working on a new platform that will be only mine... Like most things in audio... rare to find a truly new idea, but hopefully I have clever implementation. Ive shown some of my wiring before... I keep everything truly tidy and always over specd... it how we all would want it.

  3. I actually started mounting things up and building the wiring harness. It always surprises me how long the little stuff takes. I end up using 12-14ft of silver plated copper with Teflon. Really nice stuff and completely over the top but why not. I did heat shrink each wire to keep them twisted, but didn’t take it the level of heat shrinking each connector. Ill post pics of my handy work late tonight. Last night ended with me flying home from visiting my Dad and getting the house back in order. I visited a friend and ended up taking a surplus chip amp home as a book end. From 12am-2am I was wiring and dressing the speaker. (Up at 6:00 and at work by 8:00am. I’ll be here in Adseg till 4pm and then off to the ER for another shift till 12am.

On the way home I’ll do a bit more handy work, probably drop in a woofer. I’m missing some thread on adapters, compression drivers for the tweeters… guess I could use the eminence I have on hand and 1 15” woofer… Seems a bit like Franken speaker but when done will sing like no other… Fatial HF200, eliptrac 400, Eliptical tweeter with D220ti and the debut of the Dayton DC380 15” 8ohm. I’m trying my luck with a 8ohm woofer with my set of DIY universals. The Cabs are 1” MDF that will need veneer at some point but should be a great road/ demo speaker for my amps.

  4. Hey there everyone!

I wanted to bring some attention to the work I’ve being doing for the past 6 months. Ive been a bit more absent here, though have been moding and building at an even faster rate. At the gentle and not so gentle prodding of a few forum members I started an audio company. The support of the many DIY forums I’m a member of including Klipsch forum here has been instrumental in shaping both my technical understanding, values and principals I have sought in my love of music and attention to detail. I’ve only owned 3 true Klipsch products Gen I Heresy’s, Gen 1 Cornwalls and 1 industrial La Scala but have in love with the company the the ideas it embodies. What Klipsch heritage speakers have shown me is that horns allow for great sound with small power and that a good concept can is timeless regardless of the level of implementation. How all this relates to my own company includes: 1: build American if at all possible. 2. I can build lower powered tube amps which provide a quality of sound that is truly meaningful at a price most can afford. 3. Always build as though your product will be passed down. Klipsch products are bought and sold and more impressively handed down. I don’t know that anyone who buys my amps or speakers will own them for life but I certainly hope they do. 4. The Cornscala is the everyman’s speaker. Though I don’t post my own version of “the secret sauce”, I’m happy to help others in the process of building or modifying Klipsch speakers. Klipsch is the embodiment of from mild to wild and I believe this forum represents the most active seekers of that dynamic. Hope you guys can give me a look. If there is any feedback please feel free to email or call me. ampsandsound.com BTW: I asked Amy about posting prior to his message.

  5. Ive got nothing but love for the K401... used in my 2nd DIY system and 1st La Scalas. This year has shown me a few things... Cheap drivers don't always mean bad sound. Dave turned me onto a Pyle 2" driver that was super inexpensive... ~$120 from PE... only down side was the weight. The K401 is great as a stock unit or baseline. Modern crossovers, horns and drivers allow for ultra high end sound that was not possible even 10 years ago. Im a fan of Dave Eliptrac 400s, but had PH800s and M2380s before that. The 2380 was great as a 2 way, but couldn't go high. The eliptrac does almost everything right. Money gets tight for us all. Id buy the kits from Dave and get to sanding... you'll own the best horns you can but and a true sense of ownership.

  6. The general wisdom is that it should be at ear hight... so 32-36" or there a bouts. That said... the dispersion of the tweeter should be more than sufficient to blend in... ideal no, but more than workable and better than stock. These were motor boards I saved should even I find a PH800 horn... well the Eliptrac fits... Dave proved that last year... Now Im out to show that his new horn fits as well.

  7. These motor boards have come out of retirement. I built these 5 years ago with my 1st project and they have say lonely waiting for someone to bring to life... Daves tweeter seems as good a reason as and. Prob will try the Dayton DC380... Seems I forgot, I cut the opening for the woofer too small. Some things.

Here is a bit of what I've been working toward... Been a few years and 30+ amps in the making :-).

Its the same amps Ive built numerious times but have moved some of the build process to more efficient repeatable means.

Believe it or not, the hardest part of building these amps is the grounding scheme, somewhat complex and used to provide the quite I demaned for use of my La Scala's.

I swear, you could hear a bad preamp tube through the tweeter :-).

  9. Thanx... Im hoping for the site to go live shortly... Any technical questions happy to answer offline including a pic or 2 of it dressed. In my exp. selling a finished product, the underside shots only serve to provide debating points. I'll say this.. .its 3.5" deep to accommodate its choke... the power supply make use of the depth too :-). Though I don't plan to scream that I use trancendar iron, many good choices, transcnedar is one of the best around. 20-20kz, solid bass, sweet midrange while not being inaccurate.

  10. I guess I miss spoke. I was punch drunk with lack of sleep. The read is removable and makes use of 10-12 1/4-20 bolts with t-nuts into the flashing. The whole cab was crazy over built... I believe he has made multiple revisions with the goal of building it smarter and stronger. The crossover is an example... it is the circle from cutting the front baffle for the woofer. It bolts to the rear baffle and makes the rear even stronger. If I keep for me.. I may try Dave’s drift horn.

I dressed the kit up, but... but design was not my handy work. I think Dave cut these on his CNC. I’ve moved building my amps to CNC cut panels from front panel express to gain the benefits of CNC milling. The CNC allows for repeatability and closer tolerances. God bless the CNC :-). The 15 might be able to be shoe horned in ... that would be a hat trick and a half!

I’m bringing my own products and website up soon... Ill show you guys some pics in a separate post later of what I’ve been working on... Should be cool and maybe not lose money doing it.
  11. I wish I could take credit... the kit did the work... Dave had this thing with T-nuts everywhere.... I believe new versions are daydo'd into place... adding to the rigidity.

I do wish I tried Daytons PA 12" and or tried the 15" general use Dayton. Dave's crossover design mod makes it a true 1st order... run any darn thing you want :-).

  12. I had a set of grills for them last night. I put them on.. only to discover that the bottom grill fabric and top fabric are ever so slightly different shadles.

I dotn think Ill fix unles sI go klipsch cloth... Do you guys think Cane woudl look good or stick with black?

  13. I have 3 sets of top hats.

1 Dave made everything... APT12/ES5800 Eliptrac 400/FaitalHF200 Contrac/D220ti with 2way/3way switch... love it... its the reference that others are measured against.

1 3 way I made... DIY Universal/tweeter attenuator eliptrac 400/ Pyle PDB952 Contact/D220ti... much much less expensive to build and goes toe to toe with the bigger brother.

    1 2way made with APT12 Eliptrac 400/DE85.

I had a 2 way just like the one I made but in a original cab and loved it... I sold it and wanted a replacement.

The 3 ways were for demoing and showing what cab done.

The 2ways are for 98% of my listening... I just need to get my wife to let me put them down stairs in the living room. Not to stiff up a hornets nest, but the Universal/tweeter attenuator (cornscalawal) is simply incredible. If it was available when I did my 1st pair I would have gone that route... super musical, but maybe less modern sounding. The APT12/ES5800 turns the cornscala into a super studio monitor... very true to source. The 2ways may not be 100% true to source, but they have coherence and relaxed presentation that makes listening for hours super easy.

  14. Here is my casual listening 2 way J. I built a 3 way with the help of my biasness partner and Dave Harris several months ago to use to demo bins and tube amps we are building. The 3 way uses Dave’s special sauce. An eliptical horn/ cheap 2” driver, contrac tweeter/ D220ti driver and DIY ALK universal with tweeter attenuator. The combo is truly 1 of my top 3 speakers I’ve built/owner. My horn reference uses Apt12/ES5800 crossovers and I think I prefer the cornscalawal… I’d take either any day! That said, my Apt12/ES5800 allows for 2way/3way operation. After lots of listening, I knew that 2ways are pretty magical. I had owned a pair of original cornwals Dave converted 2 ways, but sold them to pay for a VPI classic. I set out to build a new set of bass bins. The 3way top hat came first for some reason, but the goal was to get the 2ways up and running. The 3 ways require a very tall top hat. The 2 ways can be short and squat… yet my wife still will not allow in the living room. Yesterday I wired up the ALK APT-12s and make use. The horns are a Dave Harris Sp. edition and are Fing bad ***. The sound is exactly what I wanted and the cab is splits and short… J. (Not sure Ive put this out there before, but any Klipsch forum member who wants to hear is always welcome. Im in south OC (close to Irvine, Ca). Many thanks to ALK and Dave Harris. I only need a 20x30 room to let them breath now! BTW they are playing so well with my Darling amp. The 1626 tube with .75 SE watts is magical. Incredibly sweet sound.

  15. Im not one to state 1 speaker as being better than another... I will say that their sound is familiar to the Heresy's or CS1s.

The nice thing with the crossover design is that its 1st order for the woofer... I used the Dayton 12" but with some slight changes the dayton 15 could be used.
