  1. Super kind... The reality is that I’m a state employed social worker that likes to build stuff a lot. As such I’ve found a lot of help on the forms and outside to make my desires happen. I’d like to think of myself as good general contractor... completely not an expert in anything other than forensic or emergency room mental health. For audio, I like simple understandable stuff... I think most of us her do. The almost all the amps I build employ circuits not of my own design… but I’ve taken the time with the designer to get from these circuits to do what we needed… simple/ predictable/ rebuildable deigns. We have so many good resources on the forum, from horns or crossovers there is a glut of knowledge. I think the more we try to figure stuff out, the more we stumble too. I know will be including ground lift switches after having 2 customers have issues. Painful as growth is, ultimately its good stuff. How many crappy cabs have all of us made before building 1 that was plum and had the right dimensions to sound great… how many bad horns/ bad cuts has Dave had to eat… I hate crossovers… black magic to me… yet Bob, Al and Dean make them dance… again I bet with the burnt fingers along the way.
  2. I think I can... I think I can :-). Dean get your Scalas up and running. Did you want to try a stock kenzie for 2 weeks or wet your wistle with the cans amp?
  3. After some careful listen Ive come to a conclusion... The LS top hats are going under the knife! Gone will be the metal K400, K55, K77 and new crossovers AL-3s... all soon to be listed in the garage sale sec. The top hats will get an eliptrac 400 and a DE400... crossovers will be an oldie but a goodie... the AP12-500. Dave or I should be able to shoe horn his horn into the top hat... Ill get the looks I love with the sound to match!
  4. God thats some good looking gear.
  5. Lower registers are great... fast and what I know a LS to do... the highs are hard on my ears. I do think if I were to make a change... LS bins and Eliptrac on top would be killer. I prefer the 2way cornscala I currently have. (Go up plenty high :-). But... I love it as a stocker... prob no hot riding for it unless some K402s or K510s, or eliptracs that look like LS tops come a knocking. Dave has the skills to pull that off for sure, but prob not the time. I do want to hear the K402... serious, anyone in SoCal have a set I hear.
  6. The LS came already gone through and with Bobs crossovers... I think AL-3s... The Im not sure where the limits Im hear are... the horn, the stockfish crossover or what not... I love the idea of owning a stocker... esp one I've coveted for so long... that said, it dosnt hold up to a cornscala... at least not for me. (Looks cooler though :-) ). I have give some thought to upgrades... Daves eliptrac and ALK AP12-400? LS bins and 402 horn :-).... So so so so bad ***. No idea of how it sounds but man does it look cool. Anyone in SoCal have a set of K402s and a passive network they can bring over for a few hours. LS bins... Daves eliptrac/DE85tn as a two... anyone running it?
  7. I know what you mean about KISS. Having had 3ways with Daves horns and ALK split crossovers. Then adding stereo subs and not gaining anything but complexity, my old 2way cornscala in a cornwall box is a nice return to basics. (I traded my 3ways for my 2way cornwalls back). I was listening last night to the la sclala... Not my fav sound... I could hear why I let them go before... but the nostalgia aspect brought me back... They are good but not great compared to what the forum has helped to bring about. Then I listened to my Harris build 2way cornscalas... I spent the next 3 hours enjoying a drink and reading the new absolute sound :-). Simple has a charm I love. (Big bad *** projects are cool, but I need a break from building them for me. (As I write this Im reminded of the split cornscala still being built in my garage). Maybe something for winter or 4th of july weekend J.
  8. Kenzie or Kenzie headphone? I was intending to send Joe my headphone only amp... same great tubes and .75watt... more than enough for almost every set of cans I can think of.
  9. Yup. Otherise output would be 1.8watts. SCHU did you want to try? Im sending out the headphone amp at end of week to Joe... Deam raised his hand for a listen... Are you wanting to try?
  10. Some scalas comming your way... good stuff... Now lets tear into them! Little of this, little of that :-) Happy to send to you after Joe. (I have 2 black cornscalas to pack tonight. At some point this weekend Ill going to clean up all the solder joints and redress the amp... at which point Ill be sendig it off to its 1st destination.
  11. Super kind words. The SE-84 Special Ed was sent to Joe for a compare and contrast... I had thought it was coming home :-) but really glad he loves. Getting feedback on what someone wants/ knowing what it does right or wrong is super helpful. The SE 84 came together super easily after I was able to source an alternate power transformer. I only wish they all did :-). I had built my dedicated headphone amp, hoping to put on sale… but it stayed a paper weight for the better part of 3+ months while I pulled all my freaking hair out trying to understand why basic building principals were not working. After a crisscrossing road show to different techs, an accidental test yielded the answer... I now have a much deeper respect for R&D.... so not glamorous! The work paid off and I have a few new things to offer... Re: noise/hum. It’s rare that amp which are properly built suffer from this, but it happens to the worst and best of us... myself included... That said, I’m glad Joe loves the new amp. The SE-84 special Ed goes a bit deeper 1hz where the stock SE-84 will go 1-2khz higher... (so beyond my hearing... think humming birds). I guess the real question is weather the kenzie headphone is on par... It’s a completely different approach but seams to be working... Now I need someone who has some killer phones to give it a whorl.
  12. I did not... please explain. You're speakers were the darling of the show... by far the prettiest Ive ever seen. The boarder patrol gear was exceptional as well.
  13. I thought I had.... They are coming to OC... Going to get braced and put on casters.... Oh the fun to be had.
  14. Ive lusted after splits Scalas for years... look who is coming to breakfest. Im a happy papa :-) 2 cornscalas leave... 1 la scala comes... Im not expecting better sound... but its like owning your 1st car again... I built my own splts before and they were gorgious... but Not like this...So freaking happy.
  15. Brand is well known and well thought of... Not made in US... but considered well made. The price is fair. 800-1200 would be a good range on it.
  16. decided not to sell. Selling would only mean spending 3x as much money... not a wise exercise.
  17. http://www.parksaudiollc.com/budgiesut.html I use the SUT as does Dave Harris... I love mine... works wonderfully and its inexpensive. equivalent to $1000 units... its the same transformers.
  18. Thanks to brooks berdan for a great lead... $396 door to door... Seems this is going to happen.
  19. We met fri afternoon... I shuck your hand. You were busy... Never saw such a visual stunning pair of speakers.... amazing craftsmanship. The sound was equally good!
  20. So It seems that a member of the forum might be taking my black cornscala's... the difficulty is that he is in New York, and I in Cal. Any suggestions for over the road fright co? Names and numbers? Unless there is a forum member planing a cross country drive :-). Thanks in advance.
  21. if he is up for a small project... chipamp.com http://chipamp.com/product/non-inverting-lm1875-stereo-kit/ Ive used this kit more than a few times. I turned it down some to get a super sweet 18-20watts. This is subjective, but very tube like... great sound.
  22. If memory serves me... it was ~ 12hz to 35khz @ 1db but I don't have my bech results... its in transit back... As soon as I get back... Ill put back on the bench.
  23. Thanx everyone... I will have to put in on my own equipment... but I trust the work of who I sent it too... (Much smarter than I). Ill be needing to send it out to a few people for a listen. I do liek the purpose built nature of it.
