  1. Hello Dean. If the AA crossover networks with Jensen paper in oil caps are still available. I would like to buy them for my 1989 industrial La Scalas. Sent you an email. Regards, Mike
  2. I own 2 pair of Cornwalls-1977 with Deang Auricap crossovers, 1983 Cornwalls & 1989 Industrial La Scalas in unfinished birch. Both the Cornwall & La Scala are great sounding speakers in my opinion. They both make this South Texas Bubba go hubba hubba when I listen to either the Cornwalls or La Scalas. Both speakers will git- r-done sonically for me. The Cornwalls have more bass slam. The La Scalas bass is not lacking to my ears and I like the sonics of the horn loaded woofer. The La Scalas have the advantage in the midrange over the Cornwalls. It all boils down to subjective personal preferences in sonics. I like them both-me mucho gusto Klipsch Heritage speakers. Regards, Mike
  3. Very nice looking La Scalas. I like the oak veneer & grills. I own 1989 Industrial La Scalas in unfinished raw birch. They have handles on the sides. He removed the rectangular back panel to photograph the innards-crossovers & horns. Only has one set of binding posts. I like my La Scalas but after seeing them purty ones, I have veneer envy. Regards, Mike
  4. Gonzp, congratulations on your new La Scalas. They are an extremely good speaker in my humble opinion. I picked up an immaculate pair of 1989 Industrial La Scalas in raw birch a little over a week ago. Only 40 miles away. I like the sonics of my La Scalas very much. Very dynamic speaker with good fast tight bass. Some others complain about the lack of bass in La Scalas. The La Scalas have good bass to my ears. Currently driving my La Scalas with a Class A-2 gain stage-no negative feedback mosfet/ tube hybrid Llano Phoenix CAS 300/ VA2(6SN7,6SL7, 12SN7) amp-300 watts x 2. Mcintosh C 38 SS preamp. This amp sounds really good with both the Cornwalls & La Scalas to my ears. Ran the La Scalas with my Welborne Labs system for 3 days and liked the sonics. I will next try out the La Scalas with the Dehavilland system in a few days. I am listening to my Dehavilland system tonight with my 1983 Cornwalls. First time in 10 days I have listened to either pair of my Cornwalls. I like the sonics of my Cornwalls very much also. I do know after hearing Deang's Auricap Type B crossover networks in my 1977 Cornwalls that I will have to upgrade the crossovers in both the 1983 Cornwalls & 1989 La Scalas sometime in the future. Enjoy your La Scalas, they are an excellent sounding speaker in my opinion. Regards, Mike
  5. Is there any difference in crossover networks between Industrial La Scalas & Home La Scalas? This past Friday I bought a pair of one owner 1989 Industrial La Scalas in raw Birch. They have black plastic handles on the sides. I like the black metal Klipsch badge, has the old PWK V horn emblem in white on the right side followed by Klipsch in white letters. The La Scalas are in excellent condition-cleaner than Kleenex. I am a picky anal retentive perfectionist and inspected them with a fine tooth comb. I can find flaws that most people don't notice & was very impressed with their condition. I want to stain them sometime in the future. My 1977 pair of Birch Cornwalls with the most excellent Deang Auricap Type B crossovers are stained in a light cherry & look good to me. The crossovers are sealed inside of the Industrial La Scalas. When ever I decide to take a look at the crossovers. I will have to unscrew the rectangular back wood panel that the speaker binding posts are mounted. I defintely want to replace the stock crossovers with some Deang crossovers sometime in the future. I have run the La Scalas with my Welborne Labs gear-Moondogs for 3 days. Liked the sonics. I switched the La Scalas to my Lubbock, Texas made amp-Llano Phoenix CAS 300/VA2 mosfet/tube hybrid amp-Class A, 2 gain stages, no feedback, separate enclosures for the CAS current section-mosfet output & VA2 voltage section-uses 6SN7,6SL7 & 12SN7 triode tubes. Using a pair of RCA 12SX7GT in the VA2 now. The Llano is paired with my Mcintosh C 38 SS preamp. The Llano Phoenix amp is 300 watts x 2 @8ohms & 600 wtts x 2 @4 ohms. This hybrid amp sounds dadgum good to my ears on Klipsch Heritage speakers-both Cornwalls & La Scalas. The Llano amp is my bass monster-it makes speakers produce deep tuneful bass. I was playing some Al Dimeola-Kiss My Axe cd last night. The La Scalas are not lacking in bass to my ears. I have them sitting in front of my 1977 Cornwalls for right now. Have not listened to the Cornwalls since I bought the La Scalas Friday afternoon. Will have to move the Lascalas from in front of the Cornwalls this weekend to give them a listen to compare the sonics. I will also have to hook up the La Scalas to my numero uno amp/system-Dehavilland Aries amp- Verve preamp this weekend. The Dehavilland Aries amps also possess & produce deep powerful musical bass out of speakers. The Llano produces deeper bass response & even deeper when I use my tone controls. I like to use the tone controls on my Mcintosh preamp. I am a music lover who likes good gear, not an audiophile purist who wants to burn people at the stake for even thinking about using tone controls. Me mucho gusto the La Scalas-I like the La Scalas very much. Well enough rambing from this opinionated Texan. Regards, Mike
  6. Well, I went & auditioned the La Scalas and bought them. They are 1989 vintage instead of 1993. They are in excellent condition, I went over them with a fine tooth comb visually inspecting them. I was impressed, Tim took care of these babies, they are one owner speakers and cleaner than Kleenex. They are Industrial La Scalas in unfinished Birch plywood, has black plastic handles on the sides. Black Klipsch badge on the front with white lettering, left side of the badge has the old PWK emblem. Crossover networks are enclosed. Serial #'s are 8997595 & 8997596. Has a 4 amp fuse on the back next to the plastic speaker wire connections. I know the Industrial La Scalas use the K-43E woofer. What crossover does this vintage-1989 use? Tim was a very cool guy. We had very similar tastes in music-jazz, blues, rock & country. He had the La Scalas elevated on a pair of unfinished birch cabinets he had built to match the speakers. They were approximately 2-1/2'-3' off the floor. He was running them with an Adcom 555 power amp-200 watts x 2, Adcom 555 preamp & a Sony mega changer cd player. Also had satellite radio hooked up to his system. The La Scalas sounded good with the Adcom gear. I took pictures of my various systems, brochures and manuals. He was interested in tube gear, never heard any before. We b.s.ed about audio and music for around 4 hours listening to music. He turned me on to some music & I turned him onto some music we were not familiar with. I went to Walmart and bought 2 king sized padded mattress protectors, a twin sized egg crate foam pad and some nylon rope. Tim disconnected the speaker wire and we lifted each speaker off the cabinet. We set each speaker on a mattress pad-wrapped the speaker in the pad and tied 2 pieces of rope-one vertically around the top and bottom. Another horizontally around the speaker. Used the egg crate foam to put against & between the bedliner of my truck and the speakers. We loaded the speakers in my truck. Tim was actually a little sad about selling the La Scalas. He & his wife are having a new house built in Rockport Country Club. He is going to move to a home theater system and keep the Adcom gear for 2 channel listening. The La Scalas were too big for the new house. I made the 40 something mile trip home with no problems. Next door neighbor teen age kid helped me unload the speakers and I used a dolly to get them inside. I have the Lascallas temporarily set up in front of my 1977 Birch Cornwalls with the fabulous DeanG Auricap crossovers. Thanks Dean. I hooked up the Lascalas to my Welborne Labs Moondogies. They have been playing a little over 2 hours now and I am very impressed. Me mucho gusto-I like very much. Been listening to the local NPR station. They had a program on Nat King Cole earlier & are now playing Latin Jazz. I am drinkng me a Tecate Mexican beer with lime & salt-good beer-my favorita/ favorite Mexican beer. Fixing to start playing some cd's & sacd's. The physical size of the midrange horn is much bigger/grande on the Lascala than the Cornwall. I pulled off the grill of my 1983 Cornwalls to compare. Practicing some of my Spanish words, this gringo is trying to become bilingual. Thanks for the info, help & advice. Regards, Mike
  7. Very informative posts. Homemade, what DJK means about POS 10 band eq is that the internal parts used on the majority of consumer-home stereo eq's and even some pro gear eq's are junk and a POS-low quality internal parts. Hence the 10 band eq is a POS due to junky POS low quality parts used. White makes some of the best pro gear eq's around, no junk POS internal parts used-high quality parts are used. White eq's are expensive, a well respected company that makes an excellent product. If I remember correctly White is a Texas company. Regards, Mike
  8. I am going to audition a pair of one owner 1993 unfinished Birch La Scalas Friday at 1:00 pm. They are about 40 miles away in the small town of Rockport where my 82 year old Aunt Reba lives. The guy actually lives very close to my Aunt. Is $1250 a good deal? I am always one to negotiate, cash money talks. The guy says they are in excellent condition, but being the anal retentive perfectionist that I know I am. I am sure I can point out flaws/imperfections that a mere mortal would not see. Being a perfectionist is a personality quirk obtained/passed down from my dad. It can sometimes drive my relatives crazy-perfectionist tendencies that I possess. But at least I know I am an anal retententive perfectionist and realize that nothing is perfect & can accept imperfection/flaws. The worst kind of anal retentive perfectionist is someone that does not know they are a anal retententive perfectionist. What type of crossovers would 1993 La Scala's have? I need these La Scala's like I need a hole in my head and have not heard a pair since 1987. I would like Klipschorns but do not have the prequisite corners or room for false corners. I have read the archives of the difference in sonics between Cornwalls & La Scala's. I have a small harem of speakers-2 pair of Cornwalls-1977 & 1983, 1978 Bose 301's, 1979 walnut Advent 1's-same drivers as the New Large Advent-slightly smaller cabinet, walnut 1980 New Large Advents 1992 JBL LX 55's-10" woofer, 5" midrange, 1" pure titanium tweeter-same size cabinet as a Large Advent, Opitmus Pro LX5's with Linauem 360 degree dipole tweeter & 2000 Yamaha NS 10 Studio Monitors. I hooked up my 1980 New Large Advents to my Llano Phoenix mosfet/tube hybrid amp with Mcintosh C 38 SS preamp today. The Llano amp is 300 watts x 2 @ 8ohms & 600 watts x2 @ 4 ohms. Low efficient 89db Advents sound very different than Cornwalls but still sound dadgum good to my ears. All Ears was the stereo shop back in the 1970's & 80's where I bought my Advent speakers from. All Ears carried Advent, Epicure/ EPI and Klipsch Heritage-the entire line. Chuck Galbraith, the preacher's son at my my church who was also my buddy was a part time salesman there when we were attending Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. All Ears had a main listening room and 2 smaller listening rooms with sliding glass doors. I always smile when I reminisce about Klipsch Heritage demos with K-horns-the big daddy, La Scalas, Belles & Cornwalls. They would make those sliding glass doors vibrate. We were rock n' roll db freaks back then-AC DC,Ted Nugent, Rush, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Marshall Tucker, Blackfoot, Nazareth, Jethro Tull, Rolling Stones, Legs Diamond, Van Halen, Heart, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, Rory Gallagher, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, UFO, Max Webster, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top & many others. I could not afford Klipsch back then, even the Hereseys were too expensive for me. The Advents were a good cost/performance ratio speaker and looked good also in the walnut veneer. I am listening to the Advents as I type and still like their sonics. As we say in Texas-these old dogs can still hunt. Regards, Mike
  9. Mcintosh solid state & Klipsch Heritage are like peanut butter & jelly, a match made in heaven. They sound very good together in my opinion. I own 1977 Cornwalls & 1983 Cornwalls. My Mcintosh MC 7150 SS autoformer amp-1991 vintage paired with a Mcintosh C 38 SS preamp-1999 vintage sound very good to my ears. I used to run all 4 Cornwalls with the Mac amp, Mac preamp & a 31 band 1/3 octave pro gear equalizer. I liked the surround sound from a 2 channel rig-room 25'-L x 19'-W x 8'-T. I have since moved to 2 separate SET amp systems with each pair of Cornwalls. As much as I like my Mcintosh gear, the SET systems sound better to my ears. Mcintosh & Klipsch was gear I lusted over as a teenager & in my 20's when I could not afford either. Used Mcintosh-preamp from Audio Consultants in Chicago and the amp from Sound Labs in Palentine, Illinois got me my Mcintosh in 1999. Bought my 1977 birch Cornwalls from a guy in San Antonio. He introduced me to tube gear when I auditioned his Cornwalls. First time I had ever heard tubes was at his casa-house. Liked what I heard and prefer tubes with Klipsch Heritage though I could easily live with SS Mac gear. Mac gear sounds very good with a veritable plethora of speakers. I still own & use the Mac amp though it is in the bullpen right now. I own a Lubbock, Texas made Llano Phoenix CAS 300/VA2 mosfet/tube hybrid amp- Class A, 2 gain stages, no negative feedback-uses 6SN7,6SL7 & 12SN7 tubes in the voltage section of the amp. The Llano amp sounds better to my ears with the Cornwalls or my JBL LX 55's or my Advents. Just doesn't have that purty retro black glass faceplate with the very useful blue meters. I use either the Llano amp or the Mac amp in my third system with the Mac preamp. The Llano amp is more extended in dynamic range-has much deeper bass response and has more extended highs-treble which are smooth & non strident with either amp. Midrange is smooth with both amps. If you don't want to mess with tubes, Mac gear is a no brainer and will sound great with Klipsch in my opinionated opinion. YMMV and all that. I took my JBL's out-92 db efficient and hooked up my 2nd generation 1980 New Large Advents-89 db efficient to the Llano amp & Mac preamp. The Llano amp is 300 watts x2 @ 8 ohms & 600 watts X 2 @ 4 ohms. Very different sonics from Cornwalls-a low efficient acoustic suspension speaker. But still good sonics to my ears. Paul Wilbur Klipsch and Henry Kloss-Advent owner/designer were diametrically opposed in speaker design. But each were a genius in my opinion in their respective speaker designs and the resulting sonics. Just the ramblings from an opinionated Texan. Regards, Mike
  10. The right solid state can sound very good on Klipsch/Klipsch Heritage speakers in my opinion. I have used a Mcintosh MC 7150-150 watts x 2 autoformer amp/Mcintosh C 38 preamp on my two pair of Cornwalls. I prefer the sonic flavors of my two SET systems on my Cornwalls. And have used a Lubbock Texas made Llano Phoenix CAS 300/VA2 mosfet/ tube hybrid amp-class A-2 gain stages,no feedback. Uses separate boxes for the CAS 300 current section-mosfet output & VA2 voltage section-uses triode tubes-6SN7, 6SL7 & 12SN7. 300 watts x 2 @ 8 ohms, 600 watts x 2 @ 4ohms. Have used the Llano amp with the Mcintosh C 38 ss preamp and a Dehavilland Verve 6SN7 tube preamp with excellent results to my ears. Randy White-the owner/ designer of Llano amps & his previous amp company White Labs. Randy made great sounding amps- both ss mosfet & mosfet/tube hybrids. He was not a smart businessman-piss poor actually. Basically a one man operation with amps sold factory direct. Amps were sold prepaid, pay and he would build you an amp. Towards the demise of his second amp company-Llano. He had taken peoples money and not built them an amp. Would not answer his phone or email. No customer support for existing amp owners. That is no bueno por caca. I bought mine used off of Audiogon 2 years ago. Currently using the Llano amp with the Mcintosh C 38 preamp on a pair of 3 way JBL LX 55 speakers-10" woofer, 5" midrange, 1" pure titanium tweeter-same size cabinet as an old Advent speaker-each speaker weighs 55 lbs. In my opinion some of the last quality JBL speakers made before they started making & selling junk. The LX 55's are late 80's-early 90's vintage-the LX series was right below the JBL L series speakers i.e. JBL L100 T, JBL L 80 T. I have never understood why JBL abandoned the U.S. market. They stopped selling quality speakers in the U.S. but sold high quality JBL speakers in Japan & Europe. The Llano amp makes these 92db efficient JBL's sing & sound very good to my ears. The Mcintosh MC 7150 amp is a spare backup amp. Also have spare/backup speakers-a pair of walnut New Advent speakers-2nd generation Advents from the late 70's-early 80's & walnut Advent 1's-same drivers as the large Advents in a slightly smaller cabinet. I have a collection of stereo gear from the late 70's. Inherited the packrat gene from my dad & his side of the family. Regards, Mike
  11. Hello Mike. Thanks for the gear compliment. I picked up both the Welborne Labs gear & deHavilland gear from Audiogon at great prices. Also picked up my Llano CAS 300/VA2 mosfet/tube hybrid amp from Audiogon at a good discount. My favorite gear buying site. Where some guys are on a merry go round, changing out gear frequently. I have been fortunate to have found some good deals. I would not have been able to buy new at full retail prices for the gear. I have the deHavilland Aries 845 amps hooked up to my 1983 Cornwalls. I really like the dehavilland Aries amps-25 watts a channel. They sound very good to my ears. The Welborne Labs Moondogs are hooked up to the 1977 Cornwalls. Sometime in the near future I need to try out the deHavilland gear on the 1977 Cornwalls. I really like DeanG's Auricap Type B crossovers. I changed out from the stock Type B & installed DeanG's crossovers in the 1977 Cornwalls. They are a sonic improvement over the stock crossovers. Thank you Dean, you are a crossover craftsman and make an excellent crossover. Yes, I definitely need to invest in a tube tester sometime in the future. I do not really know what models of the various brands of tube testers-B&K, Hickok-(spelling probably is wrong) to look for.I know I would need a mutual trans- conductance type of tube tester. Regards, Mike
  12. Sorry, Uncle Ned did not offer to take the tubes back & did not respond to my 2nd email. Read his policy in FAQ section of Triode Electronics. Only defective tubes can be exchanged. Regards, Mike
  13. The various opinions & responses to my receiving moldy tubes is amazing. It shows how we react differently & have different perspectives. I respect others difference of opnion. Please respect mine. Me cheap, far from it. I own 3 separate systems & have a 4th spare Mcintosh MC7150 amp not in use. I was expecting clean plug & play tubes from Uncle Ned which to me is not an unreasonable expectation. We all have different pet peeves that can punch our buttons. Receiving the moldy tubes punched my pet peeve button. I have ordered & received this past May an inexpensive pair of NOS 6AH4 tubes-$9.95 each from the Tubestore in Canada for my Verve preamp. The tubes arrived via Fedex Air clean ready to use-plug in & play. I also ordered a pair of NOS 12SX7 tubes-$29.95 each at the same time for my Llano Phoenix CAS 300/VA2 mosfet/tube hybrid amp. The separate VA2 voltage section uses 6SN7, 6SL7 & 12SN7 tubes. This pair was also clean. I bought my used 2 year old deHavilland Verve preamp from Audiogon back in May. The preamp was very well packed- double factory boxes. The tubes were not well packed & some of the tubes were broken in Fedex Air 3 day shipping. I needed a pair of 6AH4 tubes to get the preamp up & running. Ted the seller bought me a new set of tubes-2 NOS 6AH4 tubes, Sovtek 6SN7 & Sovtek 5U4G rectifier from ATSI in Florida. The inexpensive NOS 6AH4 tubes from ATSI arrived clean-plug & play. I was reluctant to try & use the 2 moldy tubes that look like they could have could have possibly come from Fred Sanford of Sanford & Son. I do not own a tube tester or have the knowledge & ability to work on tube gear. The Aries amps are also 1000 volts DC underneath. I bought my deHavilland Aries 845 SET monoblock amps from the same guy I bought the Verve preamp from. The amps retailed new 2 years ago at $6445. Ted, the original owner also spent additonal money to have the faceplates of the amps & preamp goldplated at a plating shop & had oversized knobs machined at a machine shop-knobs also are gold plated. I got an excellent deal from Ted on Audiogon & bought the amps for $2000. That was hard earned money I spent. I like both the sonics & visual aesthetics. I sure did not want to possibly damage the amps if I am uncertain about the moldy tubes. That is why I asked Ned if the tubes were tested prior to shipping & if possibly used tubes had been sent by mistake. Ned says the tubes are good. Ned & I have a difference of opinion on sending out moldy tubes. I don't think a customer should receive moldy filthy tubes & have to clean rusted/corroded tube pins. I received clean inexpensive NOS tubes from the Tubestore & ATSI & expected the same from Ned. Regards, Mike
  14. I will clean the tubes myself. I am not going to get into a pissing match with Uncle Ned over the moldy filthy tubes. I would most likely wind up pissing him off & he pissing me off. Life is too short. Uncle Ned has most likely lost any future business from me. I will have to think long & hard before purchasing tubes from him again. My perception of the way Ned treats customers now is according to the amount of money spent at his business. I did not spend enough money to warrant good customer service. Apparently sending out moldy filthy tubes is trivial to Ned, no big deal. It is not trivial to me. We have a difference of opinion. I might be wrong in my perception of Uncle Ned but that is how I feel now. It is a shame as I genuinely liked Uncle Ned before this. I enjoyed b.s.ing with Uncle Ned in our previous phone conversations. I asked Ned how he got the nickname Uncle Ned? Ned replied that on his wife's side of the family, he has a boatload-lots of nephews & nieces. Hence the nickname-Uncle Ned. Regards, Mike
  15. I am in complete agreement with Dodger as at age 46, I am old school. And believe in receiving competent customer service whether I spend $5.95 a tube or $100 a tube. I disagree with others opinions that it is ok to ship out moldy filthy tubes & then have Ned tell you well what do you expect, you only spent $5.00 a tube. That is a cop out in my opinion. I am aware of Uncle Ned's excellent reputation. I have spoken with him on the phone both times I ordered tubes & b.s.ed with him. I live in Texas & Uncle Ned used to live in El Paso, Texas many years ago. I did not get a response back from Ned to my second email. I am a very laid back easy going Texan. But this is the kind of crap that chaps my butt big time. Regards, Mike
