  1. What's behind the curtain? I have some Khorns with Dynaco MKIII's too, just never seen the pre-amp. I use an Advent A350-the sucessor to to the A300 w/ the same Apt-Holman Phono Pre Amp. Nice work! Bill
  2. I say a new Harman Kardon Stereo reciever. http://www.harmankardon.com/EN-US/Products/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?PID=HK%203390
  3. www.computeraudiophile.com Also, Bryston has a DAC..
  4. Oh Wow! that is nice! Good work. I am in abit of integration phase, thought about iPod Touch/iPad/Harmony remote? Then you will be able to tie it all in an control it from one remote.
  5. Yes, there is an indisputable difference. The pair play louder together. It's that simple. Any pair will do the trick.
  6. First, they deliver the "goods", The reviews, the commentaries, and the user feedback are all true. Now, They are designed for some one like me, fairly technical, doesn't have the time to DIY, and purchases for performance. Their set-up is easy, and their quality are matched by only the best. The IB set-ups I have experienced are high performance. 99% of Listeners do not need that level of performance, but those who do it, love it and understand everything about it. Purchase of these JL Audios are a full measure of devotion to recorded music and movie low frequency playback.
  7. Start with the Fundamentals 2 Bookshelf Speakers, a Good Receiver (multi channel in, pre outs) Good Display (1080p) and a Playstation 3. Then at a later time add a Subwoofer Then at a later time add 3 More Bookshelf speakers, one for center (Matches across the front), the pair for the surround Beyond that, more surrounds if your receiver is a 7.1 and another subwoofer. Klipsch sells products that meet these requirements but you don't have to get their stuff.
  8. Yes, we do! Now, in my setup, the subwoofers are wired in Master/Slave mode, One controls both, and ARO is applied as a system. In turn, it attempts to corrects the sound to the room. Read JL Audio User's Manual, found on there website, for more information regarding placement and the use of ARO. it's better than me regurgitating the info, with the chance of mis-speaking. Bill
  9. "Throwing 2 subs in a room and placing them where they look good is a crap shoot for results at best. " absolutely! That is why Automatic Room Optimization was invented. It's cheats so you can have the set-up aesthetically and sonically. Moreover, using room acoustics is key for sub placement. Read the JBL Papers, I was able to understand a whole lot more, and better than the dis-information on the interweb
  10. irregardless, Two is always better than one. One does not have to go all out. Read *COUGH* JBL's well written articles on multiple subs.. or just google it. There is a benefit.
  11. I found my end to this Journey. 2 X F113s.. They are everything and then some! Bill
  12. Well, thanks to Edroom, I finally have a Klipsch LaScala LCR Hometheater. The pair of JL Audio F113s match well, and I have SS-5s has Side and Rear Surrounds. Bill
  13. I did for an old cell phone, wasn't bad and since I always carried my cell phone it made it at lot easier. I'm sure the other formats are better. How much are you looking to spend on the storage device? James Storage device $ 150-200 max ($ 200 would have to be really good DAC performance) Klipsch S4 $ 90 ( I like to sttart with entry level phones so I can apreciate the upgrade path as the kids take a liking to the S4 and make off wit them) BitHead Amp $ 159 ( Then I can use a laptop for uncompressed files) Less than $ 500 for the whole set up 160GB iPod Classic + Klipsch S4 = $349 Beat that. -Uncompressed over 150 CDs -Lossless Audio (Beats all formats of compressed music) -iTunes -iTunes Music Store you can always add that amp and you will still be close to $500
  14. Couple of points: 0. BUDGET!? 1. Used Speakers in great condition are always the better value. 2. ITU, Dolby, and THX all recommend 3 identical front speakers- So 3 Loudspeakers (Forte II, Heresey, or chorus)- across the front. 3. ITU, Dolby, and THX all recommend that surrounds should be of the same brand /series or just more Forte II, Heresey, chorus.. 4. New Klipsch are great. My best bang for the buck formula would be patient and collect 5 to 7 Heresy speakers of the same version ( I, II, or III) and 2 Klipsch subs ( anyone larger than 12") I have found hundreds of pairs of Heresy I in great condition for less than $200pr and a SW15 sub less that $250- So ~$1100 for a complete killer system? OR Purchase 3 Pairs and 2 subwoofers of new Klipsch Speakers and try and stay under 3K.
  15. James, 1. Grado SR60 headphones are a nice, affordable set of cans. But they are bested by my recommendations, you must listen to them. 2. I am HUGE Klipsch loyalist! 3. I am and even bigger Apple loyalist, and in the portable market iTunes - iPod combo cannot be beat! it's all about INTEGRATION- everything is designed to work in harmony. The Zune cannot match this level of refinement. It's like comparing Velodyne and JL Audio to some these VERY good internet direct subwoofers. The former has unmatched refinement, but at a high price point. The latter has 90% refinement, but just not close enough- but for the price some of us consumers compromise. To the causal lurker- it's like comcast cable and a DVR for all of your media needs, just in a 64 GB package. 4. I looked down at the beats, scoffed at there potential, until I heard them- a very well executed product -very refined. They suck down a set of AAA every 2 months or so @ ~5hrs of use a day.. just get a set of recharge-able batteries and your are set. It's like having the Headphone amp, just less clutter.. Look at this way, put headphones on, plug in to iPod and press play. no DAC, no AMP, no nonsense.. Lossess Audio is truly a great archival format. 5. The S4's are workout 'phones where the Beats are the travel/ office/ at home 'phones You can choose what you want, but you can always demo, return and get something else. There is no fear that you are not getting the "Best" sound.
  16. okay I'm a huge fan of the S4 Headphones. I have gon thru many headphones and ear buds and these are the good ones. Beats by Dre. over the ear headphones are just about the best around and the S4 are in that same standard. Now, get an iPod and get with the program. Lossless Audio is great! and carrying around all that junk is plain silly. read the latest reviews of the Beats and S4 and go to the Apple store and get yourself a iPod Touch. Between the two sets of headphones you will find a great set for what you need.. don't waste your time & Money on Grado's or a ZUNE!
  17. Well, there is no replacing the Lascala. The RF-7 comes close. Post pics of your system.
  18. because the internet direct companies make better performing subwoofers for 1/3 of the cost.
  19. Ed, try www.qaudio.com or www.theaudiolab.com, both in cambridge. Bill
  20. Good recommendation. Lets see- $1500 for Sub one, $1500 for Sub two and $1500 for the amplifier. $4500 (!) for the THX Ultra2 Subwoofer System. Which actually puts it inline with the price point of brand new heritage speakers. There aren't many dual subwoofer systems at this price point that reach "130dB @ 30Hz, 122dB @ 20Hz, 112dB @ 15Hz 1/8 space, 1m (2 enclosures side-by-side per THX Ultra2)" and "20-200Hz +/-3dBs" ..and by 1/8 space a non-technical term would be "in the corner" With all that corner gain, I wonder who else can compete?
  21. Sure that might match in terms of design. However, I've read in at least two recording reference books ( forgot the names @ Borders/Barnes&Noble - Music section) that a speaker's or subwoofer's design should not be a factor when considering a playback or recording system. That the resultant SOUND was the main factor. in Auto terms, a sub 13 second quarter-mile car is a sub 13 second quarter-mile car no matter what the design. Which I found enlightening or revealing, since I have always fought back and forth to what design is better. The answer is-what ever subwoofer/speaker that makes the best sound, regardless of design, is what should go with your playback system. That said, Klipsch should make what-ever sub size/design that matches the Heritage series. i.e. +/-3 dBs, 20-120Hz 104 db/w/m, max output 123dBs.
  22. Cask05, I hope you meant that in good humor. Most of those refs are ~50 years old. If you have Klipschorn's you do not have much of choice, it has to go in the corner OR build false corners.. if one doesn't want to spend money and get the most bass-sure corner placement, but that doesn't sound the best. I also recommend Sound anchors for stands, they are heavy duty iron frame and stand-filled.
  23. Russ, just in 2 channel alone no subwoofer, with any speaker, one will achieve a better stereo image and sound quality when moved away from boundaries. This is validated by many. Just start with Harmanaudio.com, jblpro.com, and dolby.com. These companies have the greatest bias towards achieving great playback sound versus making money. The continue with anything from Sean Olive, Floyd Toole, and Earl Geddes. I urge to to google these references, I learned a great deal. Beyond that the library has some hard core sound physics books.. okay nuff said about that. Have you ever considered an active crossover around 80-100Hz and properly positioned pair(non-stereo) of powered subwoofers? That way you can pull the heresies into the room, get great sound, and still keep that low end extension?
  24. Hey, don't feel sorry. I just wanted to understand your perspective. I am also looking for a sub, and my considerations are SVS PB or PC 13 Ultra, JL Audio F113, Epik Empire, Elemental designs A7-450, Danely DTS-10.. and that means a budget from 1500- 3500.
