  1. Swap speakers and see if the crackle dissappears. Swap amps etc and test. Much attention is given to speaker components when there actually ok. On older gear you can acheive a totally new sound dimension by upgrading upstream as older units usually have bad caps, transistors, tubes etc Sometimes crackling in a speaker can be caused by faulty transistor(s) in the upstream tuner/pre/amp etc. Also, it's a good idea to faderlube the controls/pots. ron
  2. HiYaAll, I'm making new grills for my cornscala's and interested in using imbedded magnets on the frame and motorboard. Any thoughts? Thanks~ Ron
  3. http://myjubs.com/ found this .
  4. I agree. So.. just for a test I'll try some unfaced kraft insulation in increments. It's inexpensive and will somewhat mimic acustuff. I'll posy my results. Ron
  5. HiYaAll, I've got a pair of cornscala's and would like to use acusti-stuf for dampening. Probably about 4pds per cab. I have the original paper mache in there now. Being that the mid and tweet are enclosed, I'm thinking that only the bass would benefit. will I see any improvements? Thanks~ Ron
  6. I upgraded my 83's; spent $1200. Nice thing about the 83's - rare K51V mid + B2 xover. Ron
  7. Just being devils advocate here. Did you swap the speakers and the problem followed? Are you sure it's the mid? Did you ohm it out? Mine had same problem. Turned out to be loose wire connection on the mid to the xover. I now use thread locker. Sometimes crackling at higher volumes can be a problem with the amp/receiver etc. As the gain increases, a bad transistor(s) will show it's weakness such as crackling. Ron
  8. I have a pair of 1983 corn's raw birch. The cabs are mint. I will not refinish them. Part of the beauty is the look as the wood ages. You can sand them lightly with 400 or 600 grade sandpaper. Keep'm dry and out of the sun, no smoke etc. Ron
  9. Cornwall - The crossover frequencies shall be 600hz and 6000hz......speaker output shall be 90db at 2 feet with less than 3% THD Chris, Not to bounce on your thread. I agree. However, usually with the Cornscalas different horns and mid drivers are used and therefore some prefer to change the frequency cutover points to personal preference based on installed components. Ron
  10. Jay, I agree. However, to me, I believe the sweet tone range of Bob's 1526C cast woofer still blends well at the 500-600 xover point. I read somehwere that the woofer plays nicely in the sandbox within the 400-700 range? dunno for sure. . Anyhoo, a thrown together cornscala will still sound better then the original and a good thought out upgrade results in a stunning sound that rivals speakers costing many thousands more. Ron
  11. Not exactly sure where I want to go with that yet. However, it probably won't be tubes or complete solid state. I'm looking for something in the middle like a vintage amp with discreet components. Mac 2505 or 2105 for example. Currently it's connected to a rebuilt 1978 Yamaha CR-1020(only 1 small IC). I did notice that after testing the Cornscala seems a bit more forgiving to what's pushin it then before. The sound basis is there. Ron
  12. For whatever it's worth. I did some testing over the weekend and had similar results on a pair of speakers. Turned out to be my receiver(built in amp). Ron
  13. Chris, Very pleased! The clarity and detail has improved. The prior caps were a tad bright. That was alleviated. Ron
  14. Dave, Thanks~ I'll get the masonite. Hopefully I won't mess up cutting out the woofer.. lol
  15. Thanks. I forgot though ... . to make new grilles. Not sure what to use, 1/4 in sheet ply? ron
  16. Finally cabled it up. Sounds Amazing! Well rounded crossover and very smooth transitions with detail; great at any level and music type. No component is over powering the other; just solid well balanced sound. And I think your ears will bleed before you hear any distortion. Very neutral sound w/o colorization.Bass has that punch and the top end opened up whereas the tweeter and mid just melded together. They Rock! > Is it a Cornscala now? Final components; a mix of Klipsch upgraded with new. 1983 Cornwall 1 1/2's. Birch raw cabs. (mint) - I was hesitant to cut into these - oh well. K-51V Mid's with new OEM diag's from Bob.(rare) 1526C cast woofer from Bob ( very nice, more clarity/punch then orig's ) Original K77M's (ceramic sq, sound very nice, ohm out great ). I believe the treble opened up dispertion due to flare opening on mother board. Dave's Fastrac Cornwall Horn ( a valuable addition ) a cornwall weakness. Definite plus New 16g wire 112 stranded from Knuconcept ( good stuff, quality copper ). Orig wire and spade clips are cheesy. Def + Sonic + Jupiter VT Flat Stacks caps from Jeff ( very nice, no more harsh plasticity or listening fatigue, great harmony, detail, noticable improvement ). Def + other Cedar xover boards with full felts pads for vibration. No performance enhancement here. Maybe it'll keep the bugs out . lol Custom wood capacitor mounts. Just because, those caps are big. Cut out a 5 inch sq of the orig paper dampening material where the mid horn meets/presses close to the back panel and in it's place put a piece of 3/4 in soft foam for horn dampening. Put 3/8w in x 1/8h in weather foam strip around the back panel board to help seal it.. So thats about it. Did alot of research and comparisons, I want to say thanks to Bob, Dave & Jeff who have helped me; really appreciate. Project completed. Hope this info helps~ Thanks~ Ron
  17. Thanks~ The original caps were a Dayton for the woof and Sonic's for the others. I've always thought the B2 net sounded really good but needed a little tweaking. Tons of stuff to do around the house b4 the snow flys. However, I need my xmas music - Dean or Frank - so I'll post results asap.. Ron
  18. Upgraded the B2 network. Kept the original T2A and inductors. New 16 guage copper stranded oxygen free wire w/gold plated connectors. New ground strap. New caps - Sonic low pass and Jupiter VT Flat Stack for the mid & tweet.
  19. Again, I'm no expert and would definitely leave that one for the gurus' By comparison B -vs- B2. The B and B2 are similar. Both B's have the same 2.5mh inductor for the woofer except for a 20uf low pass filter capacitor on the B2. Both B's use the same T2A autoformer and same tap locations. However, the midrange cap is 3uf on the B2 and 4 on the B. Both B's use 2uf caps on the high pass tweeter. Except the B2 has a 245uh inductor inline. Yes there are many variations and designs of xover networks available. I just happen to like the B2 as they sound good to my ears I've decided to tweak mine as I've added the tratrix horn. Anyhoo, I'd upgrade the old B net to say the least.
