  1. Thanks for the confirmation and all the tips! The 1000A looks like a pretty sweet setup as well, but it seems that a 750A will drive 2 pair just fine in my tests.
  2. Understand all that for sure, and I thought it was that basic/common sense as well, but: I picked up some AW650s from a guy for next to nothing however they both needed new horns. Klipsch is out of stock of course 😕, but support told me that people under power those speakers quite often and it will take out the horns. They get quite a few orders for them. I don't know if that's a LOT under powered, or just what? So just trying to match as close as possible.
  3. Looking for some setup advice. I am currently running AW650s on a Parasound HCA750a that shows a spec of: Continuous Power Output - Stereo 75 watts RMS x 2, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 8 ohms, both channels driven 125 watts RMS x 2, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 4 ohms, both channels driven Continuous Power Output - Mono 250 watts RMS, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 8 ohms Current Capacity 20 amps peak per channel Slew Rate > 130 V/μsecond Frequency Response 5 Hz-100 kHz, +0/-3 dB at 1 watt https://www.ebay.com/itm/234610829201 The AW650 shows a POWER HANDLING of 85 watts (340 watts peak) for 8 ohms. So it looks like I am 10 watts under powering the AW650s when I run a single pair on the HCA750a specs above? Is this a problem, or can it damage the horns? I was looking at grabbing a few more 750As and have 1 to 2 pair on each amp, but worried I'm short on power. And if I go 2 pair on that amp, it would drop it to 4 ohms, and looks like that would be 125 watts per channel, correct? So would this be in spec for the AW650 that shows: NOMINAL IMPEDANCE 8 ohms POWER HANDLING 85 watts (340 watts peak) Lastly, given I would need to ebay more HCA750a or better amps, is there cheaper way to power the AW650s that's still clean sounding on the amp for the 85W needed? I am essentially setting them up as zones and they will be fed by a chromecast audio plugged into the RCAs. Thanks.
  4. Probably our best bet. Does anyone know of other models that use the exact same driver? I was thinking we could watch for more than just RF-83s if they used the driver in other speaker sets.
  5. I'm looking for a driver as well. 😕 Anyone have any updates to sourcing one?
  6. I live close by and wish I could help ya out since I've been watching for something like this, but scraping up that much cash is harder than ever right now as most of us know. I will ask around though. What would that driver cost to replace from Klipsch? $150? Any other surface scratches?
  7. Very nice!!! I have an extra UMC-1 I need to market and this looks like the ticket! I had no idea they did that! -MH
  8. I've never heard any thermal compression before. I can crank up my 83's with a lot of power and they never decrease output causing me to turn them up more. If they are heating up I wouldn't know it. Just say'in....
  9. $900 is a steal for these beasts! That's what I paid for mine and they were mint too. I was almost sure they were stolen and took a photo of the license plate as we made the exchange.
  10. Check out my thread here: http://community.klipsch.com/forums/t/153196.aspx?PageIndex=1 Replacements aren't too bad and I would fix them for sure. The smaller magnet speaker seems to be good, just doesn't look like the old one. Unless I missed something, it looks like you blew 2 drivers? They run about $60 shipped and even if you blew all 6 that would be $360 to fix speakers worth over $1000.
  11. W27, I believe the XP5 is a very clean amp and dont suspect it at all. Check out the picture in the first post here: http://community.klipsch.com/forums/t/154509.aspx?PageIndex=1 That picture is my speaker however the crack is only half as long. Same position exactly... It still operated cracked and the only reason I knew it cracked is because I could hear the tin putting off a vibrating tinny sound. When I took my cover off I saw the crack. So I guess it's not "blown", just cracked out. I put the smaller magnet RF83 to the test and it seems to perform just fine. I'm just happy it all works again. I got my RF83's used for $900 mint! so I can't complain too much. Regarding the other thread posted above: I haven't bridged of driven mine to insane levels and I believe it must have just been a weak point in that driver. I have pushed my speakers quite a bit though and probably should just get a second sub. Black Eye'd Peas pump a lot of base and with the speakers set on FULL and the EQ adjusted for slighly more base, it will make the RF83's really thump and sing at even moderate to high volumes. I love em!
  12. Well, I got the new one (number 3) and it's EXACTLY like the previous one... What to do?? I put it in and it drives the same. Seems OK. I kinda feel shafted a little though. If I ever sell these speakers the buyer will be able to easily see that 1 out of 6 is obviously different. Klipsch support doesn't read any of these forums and doesn't really care anyway. I guess I just go with it.
  13. RS-52's are great! I love my XPA-5 too and is certainly a great quality amp. I am only so so happy with my UMC1 though. It sounds great, but really does still have a lot of bugs, esp with HDMI. So I called Klipsch and they told me they can't control what they get from the manufacturer. Eh, yes you can, it's called REJECT bad product. I told him that I paid new price and expected to get a new woofer. Folks, it's seriously that same RB81 in that picture above with a RF83 stamp on it (smaller magnet and all like you see above). What kills me is the magnet has chips out of it all over and there is epoxy spilled all over the magnet too. It looks like it was beat to death in a rock tumbler (though the front is perfect)! The Klipsch tech told me it meets specs and I told him I still wasn't happy it didn't match my other woofers AND was far from new. He grumbled and went ahead and processed an order for another one. I have to give it to them for trying to make it right and not fighting me too much on it. I guess we'll see if I actually get a new one in the mail this time instead of a beat-up refirb though. Fingers crossed.
  14. OK, so they send me a "real" RF83 and I get the thing, open the box, and it's a RF83 refirb driver dated 2006! The thing is beat to heck with epoxy spilled on it and the magnet is all chipped up like it was rolling around in a freight truck for several weeks! Old masking tape residue on it too! Not only that, it also has a smaller magnet! It looks identical to the RB81 with the smaller magnet, only it's stamped RF83. What the heck??? Are they playing games? What to do? It doesn't match what I have!
  15. BTW - I stuck that RB81 in for now and just going to use it until I get the right one. The mangnet on it is much smaller than the RF83 driver but the rest looks the same. I sure hope they don't tell me tomorrow that the RB81 is the new replacement! I don't think that will work having different magnet sizes across the 3 drivers.
  16. Yes, it is! What a shellacking! Football season is over now. hahahaha Time to play with my RF83's instead. If I remember right it came about in Jan 1994 when I was signing up on a site and needed a username. It was after losing to FL State in the Orange bowl 16-18 in which they went out 11 and 1 (a losing season by most in NE). After 1993 it was 2 years back to back national championships which made up for it I guess. But now,,, just madhusker ever since Osborne left. It's getting better though....
  17. I opened my box to replace the woofer today and it's a RB81 driver! What the heck?? They fit the same hole but seriously? The tech knew what I had and they are a different part number. Sheshh..
  18. 62 beans for a driver. Pretty reasonable I thought.... The Klipsch tech thought it would be pretty hard to do that with my amp without going into high flutter. I know when I got these speakers used, that same speaker had one of the other drivers cracked out. The seller was happy to replace it when i emailed him so I am guessing he may have pushed them a little harder than he was suppose to. I have my fingers crossed that just that one driver was weakened and I won't have any more problems. I got this pair dirt cheap so I'm not unhappy at all. I still don't have $1,000 in them and love how they sound.
  19. Thanks for all the replies everyone. I do play them at 50 quite a bit and yes it's loud and I can feel the bass however it's not ear bleeding loud. I guess I have a big room and maybe it gets absorbed in the openness. The only time I push 60 is if the audio is ripped at a lower level and it just needs pushed up a little to get the bass going. I do have a sub and it does pick up some of the low freq but maybe I need to adjust the settings. As far as why it failed now instead of in warranty, well I got these speakers used and only had about a 100W amp for over a year before getting the XPA5. The original owner had an under powered amp too so these speakers have never really been driven until now. I suppose it's possible that it was a weak driver given that none of the others have failed, but I do know they get pushed pretty hard with bass at the 50 level on some songs. I think I will replace it and see how it goes from here. I would like to have some input as to what people have their UMC1 set for pertaining to crossover and how they have their mains are setup as far as large or small. The sub I have puts out some bass however I really like the bass the RF83's can put out to supplement the sub. I would rather use the RF83's to potential instead of buying another sub for the additional base. With 6 drivers you *have* to take advantage of it somewhat.
  20. Hi all, I got my XPA5 several months ago and now have been able to drive my RF83's with some good power now. I have a UMC1 and listen to music around 50 and the highest ever gone is 60, but I understand there are a million variables to what these numbers actually mean. Bottom line I drive the RF83s pretty hard once in a great while, but not so hard to break a driver cone (i didn't think). Anyway, I have one that cracked out and I'm wondering how that could happen to a 300W speaker with a 250W amp? Is it possible they get weak with age and can crack out? At the level the drivers do move in and out quite a bit, but not more than I expected. Does Klipsch do anything about this or am I out? Guessing they are out of warranty. Thanks.
  21. I would have them send you a new unit to swap out to fix that trigger issue too! Thanks for the firmware info procedure. I just learned I don't even have the latest on this new unit I just got! Sheeezzzz. I have 7.04.00.03. Also when I got my unit it had 3 screws rolling around on the inside with the whole front plate ready to fall out. In opening it up I found the 3 plus rolling around and 2 were totally MIA. I had to ask Emotiva to send me extra screws. Not a big deal, but sheezzz, now the firmware too. I bet the box wasn't even been opened since Hong Kong!
  22. Looks like it is. I haven't even figured out how to check my firmware. Where do you see it? Maybe i missed it in the menu. http://emotivalounge.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=updates&action=display&thread=16658
  23. Not at all! Mine is on the floor too and I have at least 320 degrees of angle (no kidding!). The only place I can't hit it is directly behind me (nothing to reflect on i suppose). Battery low? Was your battery isolated and you had to pull the tab to make contact? Maybe IR interference from another device? < not likely.
  24. More of what I would expect a "Rock" type EQ to look like. Bass on the left and highs on the right, though I imagine that my RF83's dont need any help with highs whatsoever and that area might be flat. Anyone care to post their EQ?
