  1. That does make sense, The cabinet was sitting on an enclosed porch for years with no heat in Michigan weather...the expansion/contraction of the joints could have caused the seal to break. Like I said, low-ish volume it is crystal clear...kinda loud, but low enough to still be able to talk to each other in a 20x20 garage. It's really gotta be cranked to crackle...like ot the point it is too loud in the garage, and the neighbors will surely complain. But with the woofer thumping that hard, it very well could be squeezeing air through unsealed joints in the cabinet...and that MAY be what I am hearing. I figured it'd be something odd like that because usually if the woofer is torn you'd hear it all the time
  2. I'm pretty sure it is the woofer cuz it is on every bass thump. But again I didn't mess with it much, I cranked it up for a second, but turned it back down...neighbors...
  3. Precisely. Just a question...is there really a difference in hooking it to TV inputs vs hooking through the receiver? Either way, you have to change a source on the TV or receiver.
  4. I don't need HDMI settings because I run everything through my TV inputs. But preamp is the last thing on my list. Gotta start collecting amps first. Preamp does no good without those...atleast amps will be usable at first. I'm just gathering info right now...I have a weird way of planning way ahead and picking out components way before I need them. That way I know almost everything I need and only have to research the minor changes of the latest and greatest vs what I originally had planned.
  5. I don't need the inputs of a receiver. And this isn't an immediate plan. I'm looking for the ideas for a future setup in which cost isn't much of an issue. I was looking at the H/K because it has preamp outputs, I don't intend on using this unit as an amplifier at all. So the amps are already figured in the budget. I was just looking at a dedicated preamp wondering if it'd be better than the H/K's preamp ability since that isn't it's main function. So the cost of the preamp would be minimal since I am already looking at seperate amps, and spending $300-$800 depending on if I find a good deal on used or refurb, or if I buy retail. Also maybe even more than that if I decide to get the next model up, etc.
  6. Hey all I was looking for suggestions/opinions on a preamp for HT. I used the search function but that info was from 04 and 05. I was wanting a more updated version. Maybe many of you have had more experience (or know someone who has, etc) in this amount of time where as the threads I read, not many people seemed to have at that current time. Anyway, I was considering something like Harman/Kardon AVR-354 or something similar...that has preamp outputs for all channels; but it just seems that it wouldn't have the quality I am looking for since its main function is to be an amp/receiver. It seems that something specifically designed to be a preamp would be much better. Thanks, Eric
  7. Found the main culprit. It ended up just being reception issues. Just needed the time to mess with it. Bought a Dipole antenna and fixed it right up. When was it that Radio Shack was the only place that sold the cheap ribbon T antennas? They seem so basic that you could buy them from Walmart or Target or anywhere. But no, the only place in town was Radio Shack. EVeryone else only had the powered FM/HDTV antennas. Now my only problem is when I crank it up a bit, the woofer crackles like it is torn, but turn it back down to resonable listening level and it is crystal clear. Any cluesas to why this may be?
  8. Cool, thanks for the info. It'd be nice to run across a deal cuz someone doesn't know what they have, or because of WAF (or ex-WAF) that are either being sold just to get rid of them, or just to get "revenge." I'd almost feel bad "stealing" a guys La Scalas like that, but if it were me that it happened to, I wouldn't be mad at the guy who bought them, I'd be putting a for sale sign on the wife that sold them. I didn't think of it that they wouldn't have the efficiency if I used different drivers. I figured the only difference between the La Scala and any other speaker was the doghouse...and that as long as quality drivers were used it'd be about the same. Oh well, I have the stuff lying around so I could atleast try it out...if I don't like it I could always hunt around for the correct components. But using the drivers I already have is a lot easier on the WAF cuz all I'd be buying is "plywood"
  9. Ahh, it makes a lot of sense now. Suprisingly, I don't have that problem. She knows that the more she whines about something, the more I will go out and drink...soda. So she picks her battles...and none of them are related to showing up with power tools or AV equipment...at least as of now
  10. I have a few JBL components lying around, so I was pretty much planning on building the La Scala boxes with plans that I found on here, and slapping in some drivers and horns that I already have. Thanks everyone for the ideas.
  11. Cool, thanks for all the info. Another thing though...I read in a few other threads, references to WAF...then one of those threads mentioned that if you hang around this forum long enough you will learn what WAF means...the suspense is killing me. Could someone tell me what it is, especially so I can understand a lot of the posts that mention it??
  12. Incase you missed my previous thread, a buddy of mine obtained a La Scala for his garage. I am quite impressed with it for that intention. The way it fills the garage up with sound with a fairly small amp is great. I don't want to start anything here, but I always have been and always will be a JBL Pro kinda guy...atleast for my HT and bedroom systems, etc. But like I said the ability of these Klipsch's with an inexpensive amp is great so I won't have my expensive amps exposed in a polebarn setting with dust and whatnot. So anyway, the scoop on the barn (when I build it) it is going to be 40x64 with 14 ft ceilings and a partition wall basically making 2 40x32 sections. Looking for some opinions on if La Scalas would be good for this or if another similar speaker would be better. Would 1 in each section suffice, or should I go with 2? Any ideas are welcome Eric
  13. Just for the record, does anyone know about what these speakers costed in 79?
  14. No, the reason I have one speaker is because my buddy's uncle got them from his brother and lives in a single wide trailer, so limited space and one speaker roars through the entire house so he had the other one sitting out on his enclosed porch. I was setting up some speakers in my buddies garage when his uncle was there and he mentioned the speaker and that he'd bring it over so it is out of his way, and actually getting used. Needles to say, I took all the other speakers down cuz this speaker is all that is needed to FILL the garage with sound at a very low volume. Thank you for all the suggestions of my noise. I sort of figured that it wouldn't be in the speaker itself, but just wanted the reassurance before I start tearing into stuff. Like I said previously, I haven't had much time to mess with it so it could be anything...Last night I had some time...(we were hanging out in the garage drinking "soda") and I think it is as simple as being the lack of a good antenna getting proper reception...but not positive on that just yet...but will get to it in due time. Thanks again
  15. Hey All, New to the forum here. I recently obtained a La Scala speaker. It seems to have a static hum sort of like the radio station isn't coming in really well. But it is not loud and I can hear the music clearly, it just has this hum. I haven't had much time to play with it much, I'm not 100% sure that it is the speaker and not the receiver. The receiver is quite possibly he culprit as well. I don't know the model number just yet, but it is a Fisher, so it is prolly dated about the same as the speaker. I will play with it more to see for sure if it is the receiver or not, but looking for some advice as to what the problem may be if I find that it prolly is in the speaker unit and not the receiver. The reason that I suspect the speaker the most is because it did spend 2 years or more in an enclosed porch in Michigan. Not like where snow, rain, or any weather got to it, but it was not heated whatsover...So I'm sure the components in the crossover didn't appreciate the cold. The model and serial numbers are LS-BLSw/s and 20T846 and it has a AA crossover. Does this help with putting an age on them? Also I was curious as to what the difference is with the crossovers. I have read on this forum that there are A, AL, AA and what not. Any help is greatly appreciated, Eric
