  1. Daddy Dee, I am new to the tube thing, and what you say seems to make alot of sense about synergism. After inspecting this console that looked almost pristine, with all original tubes, the Pilot engineers chose tubes from many manufacturers from all over the world and chose "local" U.S. tubes only in some spots.
  2. That sounds like a fun handful including the Tannoys.. I am watching my five year old do some fast circles right now with a COLD. I can imagine a 1,5, and 7 running around at different concentric trajectories creating a household nebula...
  3. Thanks for responding, it is a Pilot sp 210 preamp that came out of a late 50's console.. It is a fine pre from what I have read and heard with my own ears. With the amp that came with it, supposedly, it stands up against many of the best pre / amp combos of it's day, including Marrantz and Mcintosh offerings. The tiny little console that the amps came out of, a little over 4 feet long, must have been of fine quality, the model these came out of cost more than many cars in the late 50's.
  4. A little info on preamp tubes and experiences. I just installed a matched pair of new Genelex ecc83 12ax7's in my vintage preamp, and the sound is poor to say the least, very harsh comes to mind, in fact they are awful. Everything is forward, grainy, very little seperation between instruments, and I could go on and on. Is this a matter of tube break in, or should I just find a nice pair of telefunkens which these replaced. Is this a common problem? Thanks any info would be appreciated.
  5. This is a fun idea, great for insurance purposes and maybe with can get HDBR to authenticate what appear to be custom models?
  6. HDBR, wish you had posted this about a year ago..... My cornwalls seem to fit the criteria for being custom made and outside the Arkansas area, if you search "gave away my cornwalls" the right hand sides match, and the lefts did,and the wood seemed to be unusual. I never thought there was anything special about that. Thanks for posting, I love hearing these types of stories. Might be time to get them back!!!
  7. Thanks for the help Colterphoto!!! It worked out well!
  8. HDBRbuilder, great story!!! Keep um coming!!!!!
  9. I need a little guidance from the experts. I am soldering 10awg speaker wire into 1/4 inch crimp spades. I just want a nice strong connection..... Should I strip the plastic housing and then proceed or keep it, push the wire through, then crimp and solder the small bit of wire that would come out the other side? These are going into a late 50's tube amp and there is very little room between the 0 and 8 connections. Thanks for any info.......
  10. This makes great sense, I heard some KRK models recently and they sounded prettttttty gooood..... I think the shells were made of plastic!!!!! what did that gentlemen tell Ben, "Plastics"......
  11. Happy you gentlemen are ok, Fritz that story is so sad, and all they had to do was drive inland......
  12. I am with Dean on this one, I hear differences in cables. I have tried a few different types, and the ones I keep going back to are simple inexpensive mogami cables a studio engineer in california makes. He did a test at one of the studio's he designed, against 10,000.00 a pair connects, in a system, when a salesperson came in. In the test, almost everyone in the room after ABing them blindly, agreed that his were better...including the GIRLS....
  13. I will give you one, but I do expect a pair of jubilees or at least a pair at cost... Klipsch hearings Aids.... think about it, aging population, one of very few electronic consumer goods that higher end models continually go up opposed to other electronic technologies that with time go down. Huge profit margins......in the last 5 years my dad has spent at least 7k on H aids and they break every 4-6 months, usually are repaired for free, but it is a hassle... Dont want to give the companies name but many consider them to be the best...
  14. What a great read, that must have been alot of fun, and on a boat no less. I can't believe the diversity of music. Thanks for sharing!!!
  15. That is a shame, Big Tex went up in flames....
  16. HDBRbuilder hope all is well!!! Glad to see you are back!!! your Heresy decorators are beautiful!!! Although this made me a little sad, my birch cornwalls I gave away were almost as pretty, I am sure you must have made them!!!
  17. Awesome song, Thanks for posting, wish I could find a great recording of it, have it on a compilation, no seperation of instruments and it is smeared . probably remastered....
  18. One the reels get to rolling its hard to stop... I'AM IN!!!
  19. What a great thread, thanks for sharing!!!!
  20. There are some very savvy flippers in our area..... I have missed on some very good deals.... The one I wish I had a chance to at least inspect... went like this. My wifes grandfather worked for jbl and has around 50 pairs of speakers in his pole barn.. 50.00 a pair for the small ones 100.00 a pair for the large ones.. bring 2 or 3 people for the big ones.. I called him and he said a gentlemen showed up with a flat bed truck and bought and bought them all.... edit.. I shouldn't have said flippers, most people like a good deal, and many are like most of us and just want to hear something new...
  21. Happy Birthday!!!! Thanks again for doing a great job!!!! Enjoy your special day, and make sure you take some time for yourself, too reflect!!!!
  22. Use industrial velcro brand TM. It is very stong stuff..... Make sure it says industrial and it is made by velcro.... Good luck!!!
  23. I wouldnt worry about that to much, you'll have a chance to hear them before you buy. These will last a lifetime if they are taken care of. you'll be alot happier with the Heresy i think. I bought Heresy's back in 98, they look brand new when you take the grill off. they have been well taken care of. I guess my main concern about purchasing older/vintage speakers is the condition of the driver surrounds & the electronics within, cosmetic condition is no issue with me as long as they sound like they should & hold out for another 10+ years. I wouldn't worry to much about older or vintage klipsch speakers, they are bulletproof... Some have been in serevice for over 50 yrs and with a simple cap replacement sound as good as the day they left the factory, as long as they the cabs are sealed properly. I bought a pair of 30 yr old Cornwall 1.5's that were in a frat house. They were so beat up, I wouldn't have even put them in my garage. I couldn't imagine what they went through, all the horn drivers had R's on them for replacement under warranty I assume. They sounded incredible!!!! Plus klipsch parts are very inexpensive on the used market unless they are rare pieces... Also klipsch heritage surrounds dont rot like other speakers, it is a different material..
  24. If I were you I would buy some cornwalls and save up for a sub. Cornwalls have nice solid bass, and would sound great with the music you lsten to, and would resolve most of the low end even without a sub. Good luck...
