  1. I work part-time in the electonics (ahem!) dept. at our local Wal-Mart (let's keep the laughter down to a dull roar - it's a mile from my house & I'm trying to keep retirement life simple). Anyway as a customer was looking over the newer DVDs he mentioned that he was looking at getting a surround speaker system - Bose. I did my good deed and strongly suggested that he listen to some other systems, noting he could find better for the same price or less. I even suggested he go to BestBuy and check out their Klipsch line as well as any other systems before he puts his money on a Bose system. I have a hunch this fell on deaf (no pun intended) ears. But, hey! I tried!
  2. Another good one is "Pearl Harbor", the battle scene. This will have your friends and family ducking for cover.
  3. "Wipe Out" from "The Ventures On Stage Around The World", live recording 1965 on Dolton Records. Instead of one long drum roll (IMHO) by the Safaris studio version. The Ventures live version actually has a real drum solo. It impressed me when I got it at the age of 15, and it still impresses me today (40 years later). I have the album (with alot of snap, crackle & pop) and I was also fortunate enough to obtain it on CD. Another favorite is "Apricot Brandy" by Rhinoceros. This was popular around 1968. Rhinoceros recorded three albums for Elektra Records. All of them are available these days on CD through Collectibles Records. "Apricot Brandy" packed alot of whallop in a short song.
  4. Thanks for the link m00n. I was checking the site out a little while ago. Now I'm working real hard at keeping the plastic in my wallet. There's alot of very good stuff out there in DTS. I got a copy of a Buddy Rich DVD in DTS for Christmas and will be listening to it this week (while wife is away and I can crank it). This should be awesome.
  5. I just replaced my old JVC DVD player which used to play DVD-Audio. It was starting to get rather picky on which DVDs it wanted to read. I bought a Samsung HD-841 universal player which handles DVD-Audio & SACD. So, this has been multi-channel week for me. Eric Clapton's "461 Ocean Blvd." - SACD Rock Very good overall. The standout track is "Let It Grow". Steely Dan's "Gaucho" - DVD-Audio Rock Just a very good overall recording with Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, Rick Marotta, Steve Gadd & Jeff Porcaro on drums. Jeff Beck's "Blow By Blow" - SACD Fusion Fantastic recording start to finish. "Air Blower" & "Freeway Jam" were the standout tracks for me. Richard Bailey is on drums & he just kicks butt. Beck just covers alot of textures with his guitar. The man has taste. He is in a class all his own.

    Ladykillers

This was a Netflix rental (fortunately) for me. I spent alot of time with my thumb on fast forward. I just could not get into this movie.
  7. I almost didn't watch this movie because my wife had already seen it and thought it was boring. Glad I tried it anyway. I thought it was a good movie and definitely a different role for Tom Cruise. I also thought Jamie Fox was very good in this. I'm looking forward to seeing (and hearing) him in "Ray" the Ray Charles movie. I believe it's due out on DVD in February.
  8. I'm thinking about purchasing the Samsung DVD-HD841. I currently have a 7 disc JVC DVD player (had it 3-4 years & doesn't owe me anything) that is beginning to get more and more picky about the movies it wants to read. It also does not seem to want to read my DVD-Audio discs anymore. So I'm thinking about the DVD-HD841 which also plays SACD as well as DVD-Audio. It also has a DVI output (even comes with DVI cable) which will be handy if I talk my wife into letting me get the DLP TV I've been drooling over. That's a ways off, but I'm trying to look to the future as far as the DVD player goes. I know the bass management isn't supposed to be the best, but the price of this unit ($200 or less) is hard to pass up. It will also get me back into listening to multi-channel music again. I was wondering if anyone on the forum has had any experience with this particular DVD player. Any pros or cons?
  9. During the next month I plan to buy a Samsung DVD-HD841 at Circuit City. The store price is $200. The on-line price is $170 (a web only special). According to the website they offer a 3 year "protection plan" for $45. I'm not going to get the protection plan. Normal warranty is 12 months parts & labor. At the frequency I use a DVD player, I figure it will be at the rate of $1/day. The DVD player won't owe me anything after 12 months and anything past that 12 months is a bonus. Who knows what new goodies, bells and whistles will be on these things in another year or whenever my DVD player begins to malfunction. On a big ticket item like an HDTV, I'd probably consider it, but not on something like a DVD player.
  10. Reside in Elkton, MD. Retired two years from MD Division of Parole & Probation (music helped me maintain some of my sanity). For the past year I've been working at Wal-Mart in the electronics (at least that's what they call it) dept. It's a mile from my house (trying to keep life simple). I keep hoping that someday soon a Circuit City or an even more up-scale a/v store will locate closer to my home so that I can work with better quality toys. I haven't been the same since the Fab Four landed on our shores many years ago and yes music is still helping me maintain the rest of my sanity.
  11. I've been using Netflix for about two years now and love it. I figure it's running me about $1.60/rental depending upon when I get around to viewing the movies. My movies are returned to Easton, MD. I've learned that if I put a movie into the mail to them on Friday, they receive it on Monday - just in time for them to ship out new movies that are released on Tuesdays. I used to have HBO also and got tired of them running the same movies over and over again. Even with digital cable and several HBO channels, it was for the most part the same movies. I've found Netflix to be a much more pleasant experience.
  12. Sounds like a good deal to me. I have the RB-5IIs and use them as the mains in my 5.1 set-up. I think you'll enjoy them in either a 7.1 or stereo set-up.
  13. I'm into some of the rock 'n' roll Christmas songs (vs traditional). Right now I'm listening to "Please Come Home For Christmas" by The Eagles. And now a version of "Merry Christmas Baby" by James Brown just came up on my playlist. Cool horns. Another song I can play over and over is "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Vince Vance & The Valiants. First heard this song on WQSR out of Baltimore and had to track it down.
  14. thebes, I second the opinion for "Feels Like Rain" by Buddy Guy. I was also fortunate enough to see him in a club in Newark,DE many moons ago. Now I know where Clapton and Hendrix got some of their licks. It's a very good CD, with some guest artists on it. I believe my favorite track was "Change In The Weather" which is originally from John Fogerty's CD "Eye Of The Zombie". This week at BB I purchased my first Dual Disc (one side CD and one side DVD). It was The Donnas "Gold Medal". I saw them on one of the late night shows recently and was impressed with their style and energy. The CD was very enjoyable over all and the guitar work reminded me alot of the style from the 1969-1970 era with the sustain on the notes. My DVD player would not read the DVD side (however my player has been rather finicky lately about which DVDs it wants to read - may be time to replace it), but my PC did read it and I was able to view the video as well as the making of the video. I still wish my DVD player had read it as all of the songs on the DVD side are in 5.1 surround sound.
  15. Habla, I agree with Bill H. Try to check out the reference series. I started my a/v journey checking out the Synergy series. Once I heard the Reference series there was no turning back. I got my system about three years ago (RB5IIs-mains, RC3II-center, RS3IIs-surrounds & KSW12-sub). I have the system hooked up to a Denon 3802 receiver. I love this set up. You can always spend the $250 on cables, speaker wire and and all those CDs you will be dying to try out on your new system.
  16. skeptic, What's the status on the future of Merriweather Post. I've heard the powers that be are going to tear it down, then I heard it was going to be renovated. I'm one of those older guys with alot of fond memories of Merriweather. The first concert I attended there was in 1972 - Emerson, Lake & Palmer on their "Trilogy" tour. Great place for a concert. I used to go there quite a bit.
  17. My first stereo (if you want to call it that) was a GE Mustang - a flip up turntable with detachable speakers (all plastic naturally). It got me through college ('68 to '72). When I got my first job after school I spent my first paycheck on a Lafayette receiver, Criterion speakers and a Garrard turntable. I later upgraded to a HK receiver, BIC cassette recorder, B&O turntable and Bose (I know, I know but back in 1980 they sounded pretty good) 601 speakers. About two years ago I upgraded to a Denon AVR3802 and Klipsch RB5II, RC3II, RS3II speakers with a KSW12 sub. I like those pictures of the old transistor radios. In high school I had one and used to stay up nights with one glued to my ear, listening to a DJ named Joey Reynolds on WKBW out of Buffalo, NY. That guy was funny as hell.
  18. I work part-time (part of my retirement plan) at a Wally World in Maryland. We're just starting to get some HDTVs (including a couple of 30" widescreens). We'll be moving into a new Super Wal-Mart (about a mile or so up the road from our current location)next spring. Hopefully we'll get alot more variety in the bigger store. I can't wait to get my employee discount on one of those PLDs -- oops I mean DLP TVs.
  19. We've lost a national treasure with his passing away. I was fortunate enough to see him perform in concert a couple of times. Once was in a club setting in Newark, DE. Talk about sweat dripping from the walls. He'll be missed very much.
  20. I used to play drums, so I've always been partial to Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. Also check out Ed Shaunnessy if you find him on anything. He was the drummer for the Tonight Show Band back when Johnny Carson was king of night-time TV. I was fortunate as a teenager that my grandfather and uncle (a couple of big band fans - may they r.i.p.)took me to The Steel Pier in Atlantic City a couple of times to see Krupa and Rich. Some of my fondest musical memories.

On a different note - anybody catching any of those tasty crustaceans down your way yet? I can't wait to hit the water and lay out a trot line.
  23. IMHO Ms. Ronstadt is the essence of style. But then again, I've been in love with her since about 1973 (yes my wife knows). I was fortunate enough to see her in concert with Nelson Riddle and his orchestra at The Sands in Atlantic City (I forget exactly what year that was). My buddy and I had seats right next to the stage. The only musician from her pop/rock band was Don Grolnick (R.I.P.) on piano. I knew I was going to enjoy her, but I was very surprised at how much I got into the orchestra. The horn section blew me away. They cut some of those cats loose on solos - Whew! Also, the drummer was John Guerin of the mid-70's jazz fusion band the L.A. Express. No slouch there. For anyone who is into multi-channel music, Ronstadt's "What's New" recording is available on DVD-Audio.
  24. I Can't help It If I'm Still In Love With Her -- Linda Ronstadt without a doubt. Fantastic all around great vocalist in a variety of different styles.
  25. I haven't watched this movie in a while, but remember it as being very moving emotionally when I did see it. If I remember correctly, Gibson & Elliott's unit was the 7TH Calvary, which was Custer's unit. There was one scene in the movie with I believe Sam Elliott standing and firing in the thick of the battle. It looked like a tribute to the old Errol Flynn movie, "They Died With Their Boots On" circa 1942, which was about Custer & the 7TH Calvary at the Battle of Little Big Horn. I thought it was a nice tribute to a previous era in movie-making.
