  1. My local library has quite a few CDs and every once in a while I'll find an artist to try out. I had a chance to listen to Laura Nyro (writer of "Eli's Coming" by Three Dog Night and numerous other songs). Also when I was about age 15 (many moons ago)in the days of strictly vinyl, I discovered a B.B. King album at the library - "The Electric B.B. King". I've been a big fan of King and the blues in general ever since. I now have that recording on vinyl and CD.

Most of the time you could educate the salesmen. I can't speak for BB or RS, but this could be due to a lack of product training by the employer. My employer's main concern appears to be having me trained properly in how to run the register. As far as the product line is concerned, training is practically nil. You really have to push to get any education on the products. I've also expressed this to the personnel dept. and management (during my recent evaluation) and frankly I doubt I'll receive the training I need and desire. I really would like to have the proper information to provide to a customer so that I don't have to sound like a bumbling idiot. It makes my day when I can actually clarify something for a customer by providing accurate information. I for one will tell a customer when I don't know the answer to their question, or at least direct them to a co-worker I think may know. Maybe this isn't good "business", but I don't feel right trying to bull**** my way out of the situation. And yes I do try to educate myself. As far as making a few bucks, I get the same hourly rate whether I sell a roll of speaker wire or a TV.
  3. I thought it was a great movie. Sound was awesome. Very good use of the surrounds. I thought Robert Duvall was excellent. If you're a fan of Duvall, I also recommend "Secondhand Lions". Duvall has the best part in that movie. Michael Caine is in it also.
  4. Opera, hip-hop & rap don't do much for me. Otherwise I listen to everything from Beatles to Beethoven and Willie Nelson to Nelson Riddle (preferably with Linda Ronstadt on vocals). Recent purchases have been "The Essential Dave Brubeck", "The Definitive Jimmy Smith" and "Climax Blues Band FM/Live". I'm looking forward to picking up Norah Jones new CD. Really enjoyed the last one. Thinking about checking out The Vines also.
  5. Anyone heard anything by a band called The Darkness yet? My 24 year old daughter (who bless her heart likes classic rock) says they sound like a cross between Led Zep and Queen. I may have to check these guys out.
  6. I didn't know Ronstadt's "Round Midnight" set was available in a multi-channel format. I do have her "What's New" recording in DVD-Audio and recommend it. This "Country Western" gal has recorded in alot of different styles. In addition to her country - country/rock, pop rock and big band styles she has recorded Mexican (also music she grew up with) albums ("Cicones de Mi Padre, etc.), broadway - "Pirates of Penzance", new wave leanings with "Mad Love"(check out her versions of Elvis Costello's "Allison" and "Party Girls") and if you go back to her days with The Stone Poneys there is a folk style. In case you haven't guessed she's probably my favorite singer.

This was a good flick to watch with my wife. Overall an enjoyable feel good movie. Oh, and my wife only required a half of a box of Kleenex to get through it. Of course there were also a few obscene finger gestures in my direction for making fun of her.
  8. Has anyone had any experience with Streamwaves? I was wondering if you could actually burn the songs to a CD or if this was just for listening to streaming music. I'm looking for a legitimate (make that legal) source for downloading and burning songs and www.streamwaves.com sounded interesting. I'm also open to other suggestions, i.e. Napster, Musicmatch etc. I fooled with iTunes a little, but didn't care copying my CDs into it - it seemed slow. It made Windows Media Player look good.
  9. merlin3791, Thanks for the definitive answer on the Pannys being one piece. Just what I was seeking. Thanks.
  10. My RC-3 is about 23"X8"X8". Hopefully that will sit on top of the Panny alright. I'm still a little confused as to whether or not these two Pannys are two piece units or not. Do you have any info on this Easylistener? As far as width, the 53 cabinet is only about 2 inches wider than the 47, so I'd basically have about the same amount of room along the wall for my A/V gear, main speakers, sub etc. I'm still not sure about the viewing distance between the two. It's hard to tell at the local Circuit City or BestBuy. They're not side by side which would be better for comparing them.
  11. I plan to use it for mostly DVD viewing. Not much HD programming available in this area yet via cable. Plus I don't watch that much regular TV programming except the news, NYPD Blue and Ravens games. My old 32" Panny is good enough for watching the news.
  12. Thanks for the input guys. The price difference is $200. I could buy the Pioneer DV-563AS DVD player for that and then I could play SACDs as well as DVD-Audio discs - hmmmm. Lew's media center is looking and sounding better. Will my RC-3 center channel sit on top of it OK?
  13. I'm looking into purchasing either a Panasonic PT47WX53 or PT53WX53, hopefully in the next couple of months. The room it will be in is 12'X12'. Has anyone had any experience with either of these models. Any pros and cons regarding these models.I was also wondering if the the base and the screen are all one piece or two separate pieces to be attached. I have a tight corner to navigate to get the RPTV in the room. Thanks
  14. I saw Cheap Trick back in the mid-80s at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. They were on the bottom of the bill with Sweet in the middle and Foghat headlining. My ex-wife was hit in the mouth by a wayward frisbee that night. Great rock'n'roll. Very memorable night. Also saw Cheap Trick about two years ago at The Grand Opera House in Wilmington, DE. A much more intimate setting than the Spectrum and much better acoustics. Listening to music, I've been on a Sweet kick here lately. "Ballroom Blitz", "Action", "Love Is Like Oxygen" & "Fox On The Run". I saw these guys on their first tour of the U.S. in the early 80s at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA. For a British group that was a cross between bubble-gum, glam and hard rock, they kicked butt. Helluva stage show. Their warm-up act was Eric Carmen (former Raspberries)on his first solo tour. Also check out the remastered Back In Black by AC/DC. I think it sounds a whole lot better than the early CD release that was issued. Seems like there is better separation & you can pick out individual instruments better. That's one CD that just has to be cranked to really enjoy it. Definitely a good work out for a sub.

dtel, Check out www.amazon.com, they have quite a few concert dvds. Also check out www.dvdplanet.com and www.dvdempire.com If your looking for a some good concerts, I recommend: John Fogerty - Premonition Eagles - Hell Freezes Over Roy Orbison - Black & White Night Peter Frampton - Live In Detroit Led Zeppelin - new 2 dvd set All except the Fogerty dvd have DTS.
  16. These have all been mentioned before, but just wanted to add my 2 cents. Tchiakovsky - 1812 Overture on Telarc- again awesome cannons B.B. King & Eric Clapton - Riding With The King - just fantstic, it's like having B.B. & E.C. in my living room ELP - Brain Salad Surgery - saw the tour & this DVD-A was like being there, the ending of Karn Evil 9 - Whoa! Deep Purple - Machine Head Eagles - Hotel California - my sis-in-law claims she was never that crazy about this recording until I played the DVD-A for her Yes - Fragile
  17. I recommend Louis Armstrong & Duke Ellington, "The Great Summit - The Complete Sessions, Deluxe Edition".
  18. I also recommend Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" and J. Fogerty "Premonition". A couple more goodies are Roger Waters "In The Flesh Live" and Peter Frampton "Live In Detroit" (very good DTS).
  19. Good show. I had forgotten it was on and was playing on the net. My wife had it on and saw Clapton and called me in the room. I think one of the coolest parts of the show was when Leon Russell and Ray Charles were doing "A Song For You". Willie looked like he was getting a little choked up. Great show over all.
  20. Another Buddy Rich fan checking in. You might want to check out "Buddy & Soul". I was fortunate enough to see him play in concert a couple of times. Once was on the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, which shows you I'm getting up there a little bit in years too. Anyway on "Buddy & Soul" he covers a couple of Doors songs, "Soul Kitchen" and "Hello I Love You". I was a big Doors (John Densmore wasn't your typical Rock 'N' Roll drummer) fan also. I remember seeing Rich on The Tonight Show quite a bit. Just a fantastic drummer. Another recording to check out is Louis Armstrong & Duke Ellington, "The Great Summit - The Complete Sessions, Deluxe Edition". This one sweet set. I highly recommend this for anyone who is a fan of the Duke and/or Satchmo.
  21. Thanks for the info guys. I'm thinking the Mits might be a good size for the room it will be in. Also it's a rather light weight (@ 110 lbs.)unit which would be good on the A/V stand I have for my HT gear and TV. There's going to be a 30lb. RC3II sitting on top of it. I think the next thing I need to do is get out there and check out these models in person. There's rain in the forcast in my area from about Wed. through Mon. Hmmm? Might be a good time to go check out these bad boys. Thanks again.
  22. I'm getting ready to start drooling over TVs and I'm considering the following rear projection sets: Mitsubishi 42" WT42311 Sony 46" KP 46WT500 Panasonic 47" PT 47WX42 Hitachi 43" 43FWX20DB Right now the above is pretty much my order of preference. The room size is 12'X12' which I know isn't the best for HT sound or viewing, but it's the best I can do as rest of family could care less about HT. If anyone has had any experience with the above models or has any other thoughts or considerations I'd appreciate the input. Thanks in advance folks.
  23. I've heard of them. I have their CD "Un-led-Ed". First song I ever heard by them on the radio (years ago)was "Heartbreaker (At The End Of Lonely Street)". It cracked me up. Had to get the CD. It's mostly Zep by way of Elvis with a reggae beat. I also saw these guys perform at a little club in Newark, DE called the Stone Balloon (how appropriate). Funny show. The lead singer who goes by the name of Tortelvis was dressed like the King ala his Vegas days complete with all the moves. All the bandmembers were dressed in wacky outfits. If I remember correctly one of them was wearing briefs only. And for what it's worth they could actually play well. Very entertaining and different night out.

I have the Superbit DVD of "The Patriot". Excellent, Excellent, Excellent! And oh those cannons.
  25. Ok, Lately I've gotten hooked on The Donnas. I was digging around Kazaa one night and stumbled across them. Started reading up on them in www.allmusic.com (great site for artists/band histories and what is available on cd by the artists). I think it was song titles like "Take Me To The Backseat", "Take It Off", "Please Don't Tease" and "Pass It Around" that sparked my curiosity - appealed to my purient interests. Anyway, these girls reminded me alot of The Runaways. They also have a track on the Detroit Rock City soundtrack - a cover of "Keep On Loving You". And yes I will be "buying" their latest cd "Spend The Night". Glad to hear the comments about Queens Of The Stone Age. I've been curious about them as well. I'll have to give them a listen.
