  1. Audiophiles, Please pardon the novice. If a amp is rates at a 105 Watts per channel what must I look at to make sure I have the correct speaker rated for that wattage ? For example, I see speakers that are rated for 50 watts continuous, 200 watts max. Will those work? Is there a rule of thumb I can follow ? Paul C.
  2. Since DVD is still at 480i, has anyone heard anything about development of a HDTV (1080i) DVD ? One thing that might be a problem is the disk would have to hold more than twice the information. I think a HDTV DVD would be awesome but my guess is that the electronic component companies will want to get all they can out of the investment into regular DVD before going to HDTV DVD. Paul C.
  3. Decibel man, Check out the Denon 2800, I believe it might be what you are looking for. It is an awesome unit. Paul C. quote: Originally posted by decibel man: John, letting your pre-amp or processor decode DTS will not degrade the quality as long as it is a decent piece of equipment. It should actually improve the quality, although I doubt it will be audible. There is less chance of signal interference if you use the digital out. I would suggust the Toshiba SD2200 (should be $250 - $280), I have one and love it for the money. It also has HDCD, so when you upgrade you can use it as a spare CD / DVD-V player in a bedroom or second room. That is my plan anyway. I am waiting for a true multi-player with progressive scan in the sub $1000 range. It will probably be a couple of years, but this player does quite well for now. I have had this player for over a year and it has had no problems, plus it has a twin disk tray, component video, nice zoom features, and a decent remote. Just my two cents. JT
  4. More experienced Audiophile friends, I need some help. I am thinking of getting a Denon 3801 and am wondering what Speakers I should get for it ? My primary use is for a Home Theater and I am thinking about getting the extra Surround rears for extra Channel on the Denon. So I would be getting two fronts, a center, and 4 surround speakers. Also I'm a little fuzzy on where you mount the Surrounds. Do you mount one to you left and to your right and then the other two behind you ? Thanks to everyone that answers to help me out. Paul C.
  5. I just bought a Denon 2800 DVD that just started shipping in March. I hooked it up too a Mitsubishi HDTV Diamond series 65" widescreen box. I too was pessimistic and almost didn't buy it. But I must say I have been pleasantly suprised. The Denon is outstanding. It blew me away how much better it was than the Mitsubishi DVD I was using and the Mit was not a cheap unit by any means. The Denon runs between $700 - $800. If you have a HDTV capable TV, I would definitely get it. PaulC quote: Originally posted by jefnel1: I have a Toshiba 61" HDTV and a Sony DVD player hooked up via component video. The picture looks really good with most DVDs, but I do notice some subtle stair-stepping patterns on certain movies. I am thinking of upgrading to a Progressive Scan DVD player like the Toshiba 9200. If anyone out there has a comparable model, I would appreciate some advice on the upgrade. Is the picture quality really that much better? Also, I was reading in this month's Sound and Vision that DVD-Audio can only be connected via Analog jacks. Anyone experiment with this format yet?
