  1. Still have one more side of each cabinet to do yet today, and then the edges of the front.
  2. I plan on repainting the front a flat black, but veneering around the edges, so that paint will have to come off.. Still on the search for the perfect veneer I'm looking for..
  3. work station got a little chilly in the garage, but nothing a spaceheater wasn't able to cure
  4. Sorry I should have added, they are bare plywood, and what looks to be spray painted unfortunately.. I had to use multiple applications of "klean strip" from walmart. After the first couple applications it got much easier. and then after the third application I used a medium/rough steel wool to rub out some of the thicker remaining paint leftovers, and then used a 100 grade sandpaper for the yet remaining paint. When I do this process to all 4 sides, (two sides top and from border) then I will use a 220 grade and sand down there rest of it. Here are some pictures of how it turned out thus far after about 3 hours of this process.
  5. The top is in the worst of conditions. I was wondering if there is some kind of paint removal found at a local hardware store or anything for this? Or is sanding my only option here? I know a stain or paint would be much easier, but I'm not necessarily looking for the easiest way out, I have some time on my hands and would really like to make these into a special set of Cornwalls.
  6. It appears he first used a primer and then a glossy black as a finish.
  7. I had to first listen to them of course... So I stacked them ontop of my Dad's Walnut 1982 CW's powered by my Onkyo M504.
  8. I'm making an attempt at my first refinish/restoration job on a pair of 1980 Cornwalls. I plan on updating to the ALK x-overs and CT-125 tweeters. However, I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade from the original binding posts to ones that accept all connectors. Are there ones from Klipsch or elsewhere for me to hookup?
  9. I just purchased a pair of Cornwalls for $200 locally, all original drivers and crossovers, unfortunately one of the K-77 tweeters was out, but I intended to upgrade to Bob Crites CT-125's anyways which should arrive today sometime. Now, here's the fun part, I'm a newbie to refinishing cabinets, but wanna take it upon myself to learn how to refinish/reveneer. The original owner on these cornwalls passed them onto his son, who then painted them in a gloss black. Really ugly. He used a white primer as well.. My question is, what is the best method of removing the paint? I understand I'll need to do several levels of sanding, but what is a good paint removal for something like this? Also, after doing some reading around on veneers, many seem to believe that Paperbacked veneer is the easiest way to go, is there any special method to adding veneer after I have thoroughly sanded the cabinets and rid them of the horrid gloss black paint? I'm gonna add some pictures here after I get home to give you guys a better idea of what I'm working with. Any advice would help!
  10. I'm in the market for a good pre-amp to match up with a pair of Yamaha MX-1000U's. I realize there is a matching Preamp, the CX-1000U out there, but I've read alot about emotiva's USP-1 preamp and people have alot of good things to say about the company.. Plus their silly affordable. Im looking for any advice for some of you Emotiva owners out there and any of your opinions on the best sounding preamp.
  11. Greetings everyone, So i'm new to tubes... Never even had the chance to listen to them or understand the difference in sound between them and Solid State.. I've done alot of reading around and I know of many different companies, but I came around a CL add for a Music Angel also known as Meng Yue mini tube amp that is 24 x 2 in Class A for 240.. I did a little researching and found the same amp online for cheaper. But my real question is has anyone heard of Music Angel or have experience and any feedback for me? I feel it might be a easy way for me to jump into tubes, and seeing that I'm a relatively broke college student, I don't have the funds to jump right into the more expensive tube equipment.. Anything at all would be great, or even if you have better recommendations for a first time tuber? Whats affordable, yet good tube sound? Thanks
  12. Looking for some opinions on these speakers. I have an opportunity to pick them for up $100 from a guy nearby, all woofers are in pristine condition, cabinets are also pretty good minus one part of the plastic on the grills is broke, but doesn't look bad. I was wondering if anyones familiar with these speakers? They wouldn't be in my main system by any means, But looking for another set of basement speakers, are these anything worth considering for $100? specs are 102 sensitive, and freq of 25-22khz, sounds decent to me? but how do they sound?? Anything would help! thanks
  13. SEXY Indeed.. Those are the greatest looking pair of 30's I've ever seen. and where in the heck do you live to find a pair like that for $475 exactly? incredible. Nice find! I hope to get my hands on a pair of La Scala's someday to hear what the raves all about, as well as the Khorns.
  14. Anyone have personal experience with this receiver? I understand it was considered one of the top of the line integrated for Yamaha in the 80's during the era of the MX-1000 M-series power amps. But that's about just as much as I could read on my own, what are your takes on the receiver? I own a Yamaha R-9 rated at 125 wpc and it has a similar Class A button. It sounds phenomenal on my Cornwalls, best matchup I've heard so far. How will the AX-900U compare to the R-9?
  15. Hello all, So I currently own an Onkyo M504 power amp, It sounds excellent on my quartets. However, It's been my goal to get into the older M series Yamaha amps, most specifically the M85 and the MX-1000/U as I've only heard good things about them, and they are commonly thought of as some of the best Yamaha power amps behind the MX-2000 and MX-10000. I currently also have a Yamaha R-9 receiver with 125 wpc powering my KLF-30's and it is my favorite combo I've heard so far. To my knowledge the R-9 is simply a combination of the M45 power amp and C45 preamp made into a receiver. So I figure if i like this sound so much, I feel the MX-1000 CX-1000 combo would blow me away What I'm looking for, are YOUR opinions comparing the Onkyo M504 and the Yamaha M series amps, I know the Yamaha's will be much more powerful, and likely stronger bass (so I've read) and I do feel like I lose some low end in the Onkyo.. What differences will I find in the M85/MX-1000 compared to my Onkyo M504? What do YOU guys think of the two amps?
  16. So I have an opportunity to pick these up for free tomorrow if another guy doesn't show. In my opinion, since they're free, there's no reason he won't. But I thought I'd ask about them cause Im curious. I've never heard much about Sanyo in their speaker department, especially from the 80's era. These Sanyo AVS 600's seem to be a 12" woofer? I was wondering if anyone has ever come across these speakers or no ANYTHING about them. Specs, quality, etc.? ANYTHING would help. Thanks
  17. Good to know, I often times do play my music very loudly, but I believe a part of that is because I'm a bass freak and want to feel my music playing at me, but that's what my Infinity RSW 1000*** is for and hopefully I can find myself a VMPS New Larger Subwoofer someplace in the Milwaukee/Madison area for a good price that I could add into my second system... Or perhaps move the Cornwalls in with the KLF's, along with both the Infinity/Klipsch 1000 sub AND the VMPS new Larger Subwoofer. Then we're really talking.... ahh someday. As for the KLF's and the new Ti diaphrams, I have heard that from several people on here now and am really considering it in my next paycheck... It really makes sense to me too. like I said before, I can listen to the Cornwalls for hours in awe song after song, but I think I miss that smooth sound in my KLF's. The 30's are a more hit you in your face kind of speaker, which is what I love.. So I can only imagine that upgrading the midrange and tweeters would be exactly what I'm missing in the KLF's.
  18. Thanks for the responses, I do really like the sound of my quartet's and I really like alot of bass in my music so the quartets suit me much better than heresy's. I also prefer the Quartet sound over my KM-6's. Do you find a substantial difference in bass between the Forte's 12" passive compared to the Forte ll's 15"? I also enjoy my KLF's most over all my other speakers, however I should say, I do just get sunk into listening to my Cornwalls for hours just enjoying the smoothness and clarity.. however I own the 30's rather than the 20's and have not had the chance to listen to the 20's. I've always been curious to compare my KM-6's to KLF-10's... I feel I would prefer the Legends but only time will tell if the opportunity comes up for me to take a listen. Anyways thanks for your comments.
  19. Hi guys, I'm looking into getting a pair of Forte's next.. I've always wondered how they would sound compared to my quartets. I assume better bass extension and an improvement as many people around here really love their forte's. Now here's why Im writing.. What are the main differences between the Forte l's and ll's? Any and all opinions on the two comparisons would be appreciated. Thanks, Mart
  20. Well everyone Im really just trying to see what peoples takes are on the two speakers. They have very similar specs, dual 12's, 102 db@1m. etc. has anyone had the oppurtunity to listen to both? I own a pair of KLF-30's but havent heard the C4's. how does the Bass compare/ mid etc.?
  21. Thanks much, I really appreciate the tips, and i apologize for the 'retard' comment, meant no offense to anyone by it and i may have not spoken clearly to him as well. sorry for that. But thanks again for the advice. I'll try to find some clamps to hold it well in place. Just one more question, would i be able to find Liquid Nail at an ACE hardware? I have guerilla glue but hear liquid nail is the way to go. Thanks much, Marty
  22. Hi, I'm having this exact same issue with my 30's! I knew it was the at the top of the back pannel from inspecting it, but was so unaware of how to fix it! After looking on here for a while i see mannny people have this problem with the KLF series. You all say to use liquid nail and that should fix it. So are you implying that i take off the drivers horn and tweeter, and then go in and scrape away all the old glue around the back board, and then simply apply the liquid nail all the way around the edges of the back pannel, and then slide it back into place? or is there a better method in doing this? I'm completely clueless to thsi at all and wanna make sure I do it the proper way.. Id reaallly apppreciate if anyone could take me step by step through this process! [] Thanks! Mart. Also.. I called 1-800-KLIPSCH and they're tech was almost zero help to me.. I'm sure i just had a newbie retard but i knew more about my speaker then he did. And i've only owned my 30's for about a week.. I trust you guys on here more! []
  23. Hi, I'm a new memberin the audio-phile world and I just purchased a pair of KLF-30's and they work and sound amazing except for in one of the speakers when i crank the Volume up too high. The great bass output that these KLF's certainly has makes the top section of the speaker viberate. It get's pretty loud and is really a bummer to the ear and simply just ruins the effect of owning these speakers... they are meant to be played at levels to make my ears ring for an hour after i listen to them and this is the reason i bought them.. So i investigated the issue a little more and noticed 3 screws in the top of the back panel and so i called the guy i bought them from (A guy i trust well) and he told me "Oh yea i had that same problem when i first bought them and the next day took them into a shop and they put these screws in the back and it fixed everything. I had to retighten the screws about a year ago when they came loose, it did it for me maybe try that." I wasn't so lucky as he was, it still viberates much too loud. I wish it had been fixed a little differently the first time but, not much i can do now. I've heard this was kind of a common thing with the 30's and im not surprised... I'm very impressed with them.. But never-the-less, anyone know the best way to fix this? I'd really appreciate it. Best Regards, Marty
