  1. Hello guys not my first post but this one is pretty exhausting for me. Let me set the scene.I have a Yamaha RX-V665 w/ a set of Klipsch 500s w a 8in pwrd sub and it does my apt quite nicely but I actually like music more than movies. There was a deal on C/L I could not pass up and picked a pristine pair of refoamed Infinity SM112s for $40 and ran home w/ them and then attached these speakers to zone 2 on the Yamaha and it was great. So nowI got the itch real bad and wanted an amp and Macs were out of my wallet size so I got an Adcom gfa55 200wpc tank of an amp.My sound sources for both systems are a Denon 1940ci cdp and a Yamaha YSD-11 dock w/ the i-pod.The tv is a Tosiba au37 and it's beautiful. I know the yamaha can be used as it's own pre but I really wanted seperates and found a vintage Onkyo p-301 pre w/ all the in/outs and phono you could want. Now everthing was h/u by a friend and worked great but he didn't mark any of the wires so to say I 'm a little confused is an understatement. I've taken the I-Cs out of the pre and put them in the front pre/outs of the Yamaha. Now were do the rest of the RCAs go on the Onkkyo.it's to p/u analog cdp and a run for the i-pod. Listen guys I bearly know how a refrigerater works so if you do it like the old paint by numbers guy it will help immensely. The t.v. works all functions on the Yamaha work I just can't get the 2-chl rig sparked up. Hope I covered it all and have a happy holiday, be safe and thanks
  2. Guys , I clearly remember growing up w/ the 901s coming out w/ the most intense advertiseing blitz I had ever seen. Their main competition as I remember were the East Coast Rectelinear 3 hiboys, Cambridge Audio and Advents not to mention Laffyette Criterion speakers. On the west coast there main competitor was JBLand Dalquist.. When the 901s came out they were paired with the Marantz 70000 line and that was a great match. The other selling point for the 901s was that you could hang them from the ceilings and never put them in dorm room danger. Of course we all know that the 9 drivers dry out and become a muddy mess unless rehabed which is not a cheap proposition. For me my favorite 70s speaker was the ESS HEIL AMT-----1t the one that had that pyramid shape....lw
  3. I think the glass is a great remedy. If you want to try something else maybe some wood glue and a belt clamp might work for you. Of course you could go the expensive route and sand and refinish but it would mean doing both to look the same.
  4. Jhvenier I,had the exact same problem when my pre/amp went south and had to use my avr instead. I did have a h/t system also and was told to disconnect the front left and right spkrs and run an I-c from my Adcom gfa555 to my Yamaha RX-V 665 and then both systems will not play at the same time which was the problem I was having. Now I can use the avr's pre-outs and have a 2-chl system.
  5. big cardboard refrigerater boxes to make intense forts out of.
  6. Thanks to all for the enlightenment. I thought I was going to get blasted and instead was well informed and it seems that all who replied knew exactly what I was talkiking about. Again there was absolutely no intent on slamming of Klipsch.Truth be told I would love a set of Fortes2s but price and availabilty is not in the cards right now. Once again thanks for the replies and the learning curve is straightening out little by little.....
  7. WHAT PIX, You open any vintage Heritage Klipspch speaker and there's nothing but speakers. And I mean nothing. As I said on my original post you take preyyy much any E-BAY sale of a Klipspsch speaker w/ the opened back to show the original x-overs and horns but thats it. I have no pix to show go on e-bay and you'll see what I'm talking about. Again I realise that they are sealed front fireing speakers and horns and the x-over but absolutey nothing else.I've seen the inards of many speakers all w/ baffels, insulation, braceing and maybe like Advents or even mt Infinitys rounded or beveled fronts which to me would dress up any of the smaller boxes. I'm sorry if this is'nt coming across the way it should but it just seems that there would be alot more to a speaker going for the coin they garner......
  8. Hello guys, I have to tell you first off that I do own a set of Klipsch speakers. OK so ther're not Heresys' or any of the Heritage classics but a set of 500sw/ a 8in pwrd sub which does very nicely for my room. The question I have is that I've seen many opened backed Klipschs being sold and ther'es nothing and I mean nothing in these boxes but the speakers themselves. Now, one look and even an idiot can see that all the speakers are sealed and are front fireing. Now most speakers companys' boxes have baffels , insulation ,bracing and what ever technology is used nowadays. I do know that Mr Klipsch had to have gotten it right to have lasted this long in an industry that that changes owners like every other week. So for someone who really likes this brand and especially the classics could some one explain this open box theory w/o burning my very small brain...
  9. Hi guys, This is purely speculative and pobably will never happen. When I joined the ranks of the 2-channel crowd I really didn't know what I wanted or what I could afford.I have a H/T system that does have a second zone so the speakers came first. Just doing the C/L glance I noticed this guy was selling a pair of InfintySM112s for $40. This seemed to good to be true but it was in the next town over so I gave them a listen and immediately bought them and ran home. Yes they are from the 80s but they were refoamed and sounded even better through my Yamaha than his own rig.Now the reason for this post, finally.I needed an amp and was again limited w/ the cash so my dream of a Mac 2105 was out but saw an Adcom gfa55 at Audio Classics for about $350.This was bought sight unseen and as it turned out it's the industrial rack model which I wasn't expecting. After so minor dealing w/ AC I got the amp for $300 even w/ shipping included and in absolute pristine condition. So after this whole story I have to ask if I ever wanted to can I change face plates to the ribbed stylye that is more common. Right now I do have a rack so it fits both asthetically and sized for the rack. I did try calling Adcom but it was to early and never heard back.So now I have an Adcom gfa555 Onkyo P-301 pre and those Infinitys' which I spoke about an hour ago. I must say the amp is a tank and after reading and hearing from other Adcom owners they would not change out their amp unless it was a Krell or a Mac of some kind. Sorry for this long story but I just want to know if it's possible to change out face plates. Thanks
  10. I used what I was given to me at the time which was Monster screen cleaner. Some q-tips and a can of pledge for my wood veneer Infinitys Many have diagreed saying you should not use any chemical solution no matter how diluted. Now I use a very wrung out chamois cloth w/ hot water, and for my speakers either pledge or endust. Others I have seen use canned air ,but never paper towels because they can leave either streaks or if a cheap brand even lay down minute scratches
  11. Hi guys, I've been watching and reading a couple of forums and been hearing alot about room treatments. I fully understand that hard surfaces and certain furniture can affect the sound of the best gear around. So, for some one like me who has both H/T system and more recently aquired 2-chl- rig I have to wonder what I could do to my living rm which houses both systems. The room itself is about 18x14 w/ a large area rug hardwood under that and very old sheet -rock walls. In addition I have a plate diplay and other chachkis around the room.I'm on a fixed income so baffels and drapes would not be an option. My small Klipsch 500s are either wall mounted or the fronts are on the t.v. table. The Infintys are directly on the floor .I do have some decorative nonesense all over the room , but most are heavt lamps and end tables.Btw there's no wife for decorating sense. H/T----Yamaha RX-V665avr->Yamaha ysd dock Klipsch 500 set w 8in pwrd sub-> Denon1940ci cdp 2-chl rig----Adcom gfa555 200wpc ->Onkyo P-301pre --> Infinity SM112s --> Denon 1940ci cdp -->Shure 240Pro headphones -->Samsomps-15 plug/pwr strip
  12. I know the title is a ridiculous statement but I couldn't pharse it any better. So I am a Klipsch owner albeit a set of H/T 500s they work well for my tv and movie needs. I've also gone to 2-channel and here's were it comes to be a little sticky. Where I live I know no one w/ any Heritage gear to hear what the difference is between Hereseys,Forte1+2,Quartets and so on. I've been on E-bay and both the garage sales here and at the Polk site. Now would you go for a pair of Hereseys for $500 w/ no shipping don't know year or model just HOO. Then there's a pair of KG.4s for $350 also no shipping .Now others are listed but when factored in shipping some of them are more than the n/s ones. So with out seeing or hearing a pair had the cash ready liked the finish what would you do. Right now this is hypothetical I'm waiting on some cash ,but this bugs the crap out of me that I don't even know how they sound in the first place. Of course the guys on the Polk side always claim Klipschs' are to brash but that's why I went w/ the 500s instead of Polks or KEFs or what ever was auditioned. When I got my spks for my 2-cl I was able to hear and see them ,a nd got them on the spot for $40 and ran out of there. So if this makes any sense to anyone could you steer me at least which way to turn.THANKS.....LW H/T----Tosiba au37-->Yamaha RX-V665->Yamaha ysd-11 dock->Klipsch 500 set w/ 8in pwrd sub -->Denon1940ci cdp 2-ch----Adcom gfa555 200wpc ->OnkyoP301 pre->Denon 1940ci cdp -->Infinty SM112s (refoamed) -> Shure Pro240 headphones
  13. HI GUYS ,I guess this is an observation of the practice of bi-amping, mono blocks and biwireing I guess I'm one jealous guy when I see someone use two amplifiers to seperate the tweeters from the woofers. How does this inprove on the sound . Now about mono blocks I once spoke to an engineer at MacIntosh and never heard of taking two mono amps to create stereo I asked him why. His answer and he was quite serious is when you could afford such things ,,that's what you do and besides it looks cool. I've now learned that seperating the power sources on different chassis produces the most clarified sound one could get. Is bi-wireing of speakers that are able to do this the way to go. It seems to me many amps to do the same thing, get sound out of a speaker......LW
  14. HI guys, I must tell you that I'm no golden eared audiophile but I clearly know what I like and of course what sounds good. A few years back after a debacle w/ a HTIB that crapped out I know I had to go w/ seperates. Now H/T was all the rage and I got a set up (later listing) w/ Klipsch H/T 500 w/ a 8 in pwrd sub which is fantastic for my apt. Now as time passes the luster of h/t has worn off and now I'm into 2-channel gear. I found some C/L stuff at great prices and some bought through reputable dealers. Now the question is, I 'm really into the Heritage line and have a few sets in mind. I have gone over the archive web site to compare these speakers and truth be told I don't see alot of difference in way of specs, weight and handleing capacity. So can you guys help me out and in very basic terms tell me what the difference is between THE FORTESI II, QUARTETS, and CHORUS. Thanks alot again just by side by side they seem similar to me , so guys show me the way......LW H/T-----Tosiba au37 >Yamaha RX-V665 >Yamaha ysd-11 Dock >Denon 1940ci-cdp > Klipsch 500 set 2-channel--Adcom gfa555 200wpc >Onkyo P301 pre > Denon1940ci cdp >Infinity SM112s > Shure Pro 240 headphones >Sampson p15 plugstrip surge pro Adcom-at Audio Classics $300 w/ shipping ----Infintys112s $60 refoamed----Onkyo p301 garage sale $30--- It' sgarage season again whooppee
  15. The only thing I remember about Fraziers was that I never saw a variety or line of speakers ,and my friend had a pair and were only called Frazier Black Boxes. That's what I remember about that brand. He was the adventurist type and went for Dalquist 10s or 20s, while most of us were getting the stuff that was around at the time. Dare I say Bose 901s, ESS HEILS AMT1 and for us east coasters we went for Rectilinear 3s tall boys, AR3as,or KLH 5s. I was so enviuos that I wanted a MacIntosh2300 amp like the Dead used. Well that'smy take on the way back machine and the Fraziers were just Black Boxes to me.
  16. Hi guys, I have pretty much re-entered the 2-channel world w the enthusiasim of a kid.I went the way of getting seperates for my H/T set up which I will list later w/ all my gear. The question I have for today is how important are the ICs from amp to pre. Right now I have a Phillips for a side and a no name for the other and the music I get for what I own I think is respectable. I have to tell you I also visit the Polk site and they are one hard group of people when it comes to wires of any kind.It must be 14-12ga for speaker wire, it must be Audio Quest, Blue Jeans ,or Mit all noble but very expensive brands. I saw on E-BAY Monster Cable 4ft ICs for $16.00 w/ shipping thrown in . What could be so bad.I also have looked on the for sale sites and they too are asking way to much for my wallet, Now these Monster cables are clearly THX rated which I thought only pertained to theater applications . So can you guys steer me to a decent pair of 4ft ICs w/o breaking the bank.... I 'am so glad I went back to 2ch stereo and now I'm looking to replace my Infinitys' w/ a pair of FortesII or Chorus but either everyone is on the other side ofthe world or the prices are to hot to handle for right now. Thanks for the chat, been here many times w/ not to much to say.....LW
  17. It's all resolved. I spoke to a yamaha rep and he didnot think his amp was he source. He suggested to diconnect all speaker wire and run i and see if any hum or any noiise happens .After putting it all back together a remove one HDMI cord that was to be for on screen viewing adjustments. Well glory halleluya, all the extrainious hum is gone and does not come back unless I plug this cord into the Yamaha. I have no explanation for this , the cord is good when use to get variableson spkr placement and all the other things it does.So now I have clear streaming puter music to my avr 7ch set up. 18. Hi guys, You might have heard this thread before and so now it's resolved. The original problem was to get tunes from my puter to my Yamaha rx-v665.After running 50ft of RCAs to go to audio 1 on the avr and then have a splitter at the computer w/ the headphone jack splits into 2 female RCA ports. While I did get some music the humm was louder than the music. Most people assumed it was the length of the cable or the y spltter. Not one to give up I got another jack which did not help but .while fidling w/ the back of the Yamaha the HDMI cord that's only purpose is to get on screen viewing for audio ajustments which I never use anyway. So, removing the HDMI CORD brought up all the steaming audio I could ever want. There was no degradation to any other funtion on any part of my system and as you can imagine I'am delighted with these results. Now on the technical side could someone try to explain this to me.Thanks guys for the response and some of your ideas were quite useful, thanks again.....LW Again I get full blown audio, radio, cd, and steaming i-net tunesThe tv has not changed 1 pixel and besides if there is a sole who would donate a pair of FORTES,this mission is complete. 19. Hi guys, As you may or may not know I have been trying to get tunes from older Gateway to my Yamaha RX-V665. After running a 50ft lenght of 2 RCAs and h/ud up to both devices I got music but an intolerable hum along with it.Today I was messing around w/ the rear of the Yamaha and low and behold by removing my tv HDMI cord all hum was gone and the music came through loud and clear. I know this is not the scenario I wanted but clearly it's a step in the right direction.Gateway was no help it's an older unit and Yamaha could not explain why removing a plug rectified one problem.I'm kinda happy that the lenght is not an issue but on the other hand I have no idea what is causing the interference. Now to read your responses, I thought I'd get this out first.......LW
  20. To Sweet Sound and other concerned parties, I have checked the rear of my puter and there are no Toslink or HDMI ins or outs.there are a few other fittings which being so utterly computer deficiant I don't know what the do. There's a couple of female f-type connecters, and some female multi-pin jacks and an orange port I have no idea what all these are for.Remember what ever the solution if any we still have about 40 some odd ft to deal w/ It's a shame because I do get tunes but the hum is way over powering. If there would be a fitting w/ toslink on the avr side and a 3.5 headphone jack on the other I'll eat the RCAs, it's that important to me to get this up and running. I will check most of the popular wire sites and see if this exsists. In the meantime could you guys think this through to see if Imissed something. Also I ordred 2 different style jacks but they haven't arrived yet. What I would really like is a schematic of the rear of the Gateway so I know what is where. So, thanks for the response and keep on plugging, someone must know what's going on........LW
  21. Hi guys, I have brought this problem up before ,lost some interest but now I need to get this resovled. What I did was to run to long RCAs from puter to my Yamaha avr.At the computer I have a y jack that slits into 2 female rca ports and 1 male headphone jack, onthe other end it goes into audio 1 as per Yamaha techs. Now the problem is I get music alright but w/ it comes a God awful hum that is way to loud to listen to. I tried to call Gateway and they were absolutely no help.Their response was that because I didn't buy their product no free support or I could pay $50 for their services. I am so pissed right now.All I want to know is if the lenght of cable is to long or is the fitting beat. I do have more fittings comeing but 1 I wanted just a simple answer that wouldn't have killed them.I also tried Staples, and got some where w/ the tech there but when I tried to finish up w/ him is mgr came on and also said we don't give out such info. This peolpe believe me deserves a punch in the face somewhere. Now on to the Forumites, maybe some of you have had a similar problem, and know of a solution. Yes the runs are long w/ no hard fasteners, and yes I am waiting on a few more connecters to change up. The reality of the situation is that I can not move either piece of gear, they must stay were they are. Sorry if this seems familar but I really want these tunes through my larger system......HELP PLEASE
  22. Hi guys, After going through the whole H/T experience and now I'm also back into 2- channel gear. My latest project is getting tunes from computer to my Yamaha RX-V665. Iran 2 50ft rca cables from my office/bdr to my living rm where the audio gear is. I installed a y jack w/ a male 3.5headphone jack into my computer and the 2f female ends to the cables. My problem is I get music but with it comes an annoying hum.Itried talking to Yamaha and they said I put the rca jacks in audio1 which was the right thing to do. I ran the cabels myself and used no hard fasteners just some ty -raps.So is length the culprit or maybe they splitter is the weak link. I ordered a couple more jacks of different styles.I'm wondering what else can I do to rectify this and has anyone else had aproblem like this. Thanks ...LW H/T----Yamaha RX-V665 >Toshiba au37>Klipsch 500h/t set>Yamaha YSD-11dock>Denon 1940cdi-cdp 2---channel>Adcom gfa555>Onkyo P301 pre>InfintySM112s speakers>Denon 1940ci-cdp>Shure pro 240 headphones>Samson power conditioner

  24. HI GUYS, Back again with a real yerning to own a pair of fortesII or Heresys or the heritage brand. As you may or may not know I own a simple in the box set of Klipsch 500wpwrd sub and took them over any other brand I could offord at the time.I don't know of any place where I could do a listening session to determine which model I would prefer so the archive spec comparison pages are the only thing that I go by If these speakers are so damn good to begin with why do I here about Bob Crites and magical crossovers. If it's like doing a resto on a 67 vette then I see it . When do you know to do this upgrade and side by side is it that better. 2-ch---Adcom gfa555 200wpc----Infinty SM112s-----Denon1940ci-cdp-----Onkyo-P-301 pre Shure pro headphones H/T------Tosiba au37-----Yamaha rx-v665 avr---Denon 1940ci-cdp----Klipsch 500set w/8inpwrd sub---YamahaYSD-11 dock ---for both systems I just want to learn. 25. HI GUYS, I also have a H/T se-up whiich when pushed just alittle bit clipped and shut down. Now I usally play music or tv through the Yamaha at their vol scale of -20 or so which is loud enough for most things. To go w/ this I have a set of Klipsch 500set w pwrd sub rated to handle 100 watts all day and they said that it could out perform the Yamaha. Well one day I just wanted to see how loud the + of the volume scale is and when I hit +5 which was shaking the apt it clipped.I freaked so I called Yamaha and said it's a protection circuit and it performed correctly and either hit a frequency it didn't like or a speaker was going. After doing the process of elimination game I found that I had a bad right front sat and it did it every time. Called Klipsch tec and were real nice , sent me out a new speaker and didn't want the old one back. SO far all ok and I'm going to break in the new one slowly even though I really don't push it to begin with. The amp does seem to get pretty hot and it's well ventilated. As to a reply to all for last nights question for RUSS yes it was on/off thump but none of you guys said why.And no I left the west a very long time ago way before Jerry died.
