  1. I am trying to figure out a loud snap noise that comes through both channels. I never heard it with just my old Denon DRA-1035R receiver but it is very annoying now that I am using a used Nakamich TA-2A for the pre-amp and to drive the horns in my KLF-20s and the more powerful Denon for the bass. I have plugged everything into a dedicated circuit and still get it both randomly and when other appliances turn off. Will a "power conditioner" remove this and if so, does i have to be a $300 + unit?
  2. Great info, thanks. I will research the cross-over market. Dennis
  3. Why is there a HUGE improvement in my KLF-20s after bi-amping? I have had these (used) for 6 months and have posted questions and thoughts on the lack of bass and poor imaging. I thought it must be my old Denon DRA-1035R receiver in spite of it's 135w output. So, I picked up a Nakamichi TA-2A reciever with "some" inprovement. After putting the Denon on Craigs List, I was bombarded with buyers. So, I bought some RCA spltters and put the big Denon on the lower speaker terminals and the Nak (55w) on the upper. UNBELIEVEABLE inprovement. So, do my KLF-20s have bad cross-overs in both? Thanks, Dennis
  4. Thanks. I am enjoying this one more and more.
  5. The plot thickens... I have been suspicious of the health of my Denon DRA 1035R receiverever since getting the KL-20s . At low voume one channel is weak. Oh well, just crank it up right? All of this moving the cabinets around to get some bass and even putting in a small passive sub just seemed wrong. So, I just picked up a Nakamichi TA-2A for cheap and hooked it up without the sub. Now these KLF-20 have the mids and sound stage with all the bass I need. That's with the tone control on direct. Time to sell the Denon...
  6. A while ago I asked the question "how to place these rear-ported speakers?" The general answers were to experiment. I spent a LOT of time googling the web trying to find a starting point. It is amazing what you can stumble onto just following threads. Here is a digest of what I learned in case it helps anyone else. The most interesing stuff was from way back when horns were first being used in Hi-Fi. Horn speakers are a different dipole animal than coned. Yeh, I am a genius... Actually the dispersion pattern is different. It turns out that the simple owner's manual diagraming toe-in is wrong. I read a lot of threads stating that this type of speaker is very sensitive to placement. In my room that is the understatement of my Hi-Fi career. The best starting point that I found in my searching was 2 feet from the back and side walls. The most important information was to NOT toe them in. My room is 15 ft wide and 24 long. All hard bookcased walls like a library, high ceiling and hardwood floor with a thin rug covering the central 2/3. They sounded a lot better than close to the back wall and corners where had them trying to get more bass and toed-in. The old way was thin and no depth. Then - I pulled them out into the room and away from the sides. Still facing straight forward with no toe-in at all. They are 8 feet apart and 12 feet to the chair The speakers have now sonically disappeared. I hope this is helpful to someone Dennis
  7. If the La Scalas are rear ported also, what is your placement? Or better, how far from the back wall?
  8. Thanks for your input. The rear ports are new to me and I will keep moving the speakers around. Dennis
  9. Happy 2011 folks. I am running my KLF-20's with a late 1980's Denon DRA-1035R (130w/side) and am still trying to get the bass up. Any benefit to bi-wire? I am now using Audioquest F-18 speaker wire that I doubt is made anymore. Four runs of new wire (total 60-70 feet) will be pricey. Thanks for any thoughts. Dennis
  10. Thanks again. Good call on Cambridge Audio. I found a nice Azur 640C V2 demo at Spearit Sound. Dennis
  11. After adjusting the speakers according to your advice, I pulled out the little sub and the bass is much better. It robbed too much through it's cross-over and actually back fired. Thanks again. I missed out on the Rotel CD. My old player doesn't even have any digital outputs. Now I am trying to decide between: a) Creek CD-60, JVC XL-21050 c) Myryad MC-100 and last d) Rega Planet. These are all used at a shop not too far from me. All I have to go by are some old reviews.
  12. Thanks for the link. I just found a Rotel RCD-975 for oly $50 that I am thinking of trying first. My old CD changer works fine for the outside speakers. For the $50 I might be able to save the $300 difference. If not, I will just have one more player... Dennis Oh, he has a NAD integrated and also a NAD amp available. Maybe I should also finally bi-amp?
  13. The Avatar info worked great just like the placement suggestions. Any thoughts on whether adding a DAC between my basic CD player(s) and my old Denon DRA 1035R would add at all?
  14. Thank you Wuzzzer (Mark?). After making some fair to mostly ugly stands, my 20's are about 7 inches away from the flat back wall of the bookself. I removed the shelving and they sit slightly into the unit. This opening is 12 in deep by 25 in wide and 46 wide. Much better. Then I stuck a passive Infinity sub in line. No model # on it so it's probably from a surround set. I found it at Good Will. My budget is really low. I was lucky to get these KLF-20 for a decent price. It looks like you do Theater and CDs from your INCREDIBLE list of gear. I still love Vinyl. What is really odd about these speakers compared to the mediocre Technics that I have suffered with is not only all of the music that I have not heard for years (the Queens have faded), but there is so much LESS vinyl surface noise??? With all of the defined highs and rich mids, where did the snaps and pops go? Anyway, you have been a great help. How do I put a picture in my profile? I am new to forums and such. Dennis
  15. I am new to these wonderful speakers. My beloved Daniel Queen CA-2's did not survive re-foaming. After a year of kinda OK front ported speakers, my KLF-20s are my first rear ported. The bass is weak. I have checked my wiring twice. My old electronics is a Denon DRA 1035R. My vinyl is OK as the gain can be turned up past next to zero (Oracle 1st generation with a new Grado Silver.) CDs are the problem. I can just barely turn the volume knob without being way too loud. So, as the speakers have to be in front of a bookcase, is there a best distance from an irregular "wall" to the rear ports? The lower part of the back "wall" is about 10 inches closer to the cabinets than the middle and upper section. I am trying to find the most bass. I can't get closer than 3 feet to the corners. Thanks. Dennis
