  1. Hi Gil....I did a 'quick draw' to try and better illustrate the situation but my scanner was giving me grief and it was getting late last night so I bagged it. I'll give it another go tonight....thanks for your patience. I believe that the adapter mates the 7/8 driver output to a 1" throat on the 511, not a 1.3" throat. My question is should this 'mating' occur via a 'duct' that is 5/8" in diameter and 1"in length or should this 'mating' occur more like Al describes with his particle board adapter? Al - Since I'd be using (for now) the AA network, I had thought to keep things simple and use the SAHF for the mid and the University 4401 mid-T tweeter for the upper stretch. I would also at this time replace the K33V woofer out in favor of a Stephens Trusonic 103LX2. Component wise, this would mirror my (LF & RF)KHorns which came equipped from Hope with these components in the early 1950's. The goal of course being the same as everybody elses....striving for a sonically 'seamless' transition across the front soundstage. The question mark is the AA network. The KHorns have the K500-5000 net which I understand crosses over at 500Hz and 5KHz. The AA I believe crosses at 400 and 6K? In lieu of over analyzing every possible aspect, my thinking was that I would throw it all together and take some measurements/listening tests and go from there. Could end up being horrendous and I find myself returning the Belle to 'as is' status, which BTW sounds great to me but you know how it is.....got's to tinker. ------------------ Ed Fronts: Pre-1955 Klipschorns (slightly modified) Center: 1984 Klipsch Belle Sub: Klipsch KSW200 Surrounds: Tannoy PSM6.5's Receiver: Denon AVR1701 Video: InFocus LP350 DLP front projector Satellite: DishNetwork 4722 (DD5.1) DVD: Panasonic A320 S-VHS: Panasonic PV-S7670 LaserDisc: Pioneer CDL-406 CD: Kenwood CD-404 5-Disc Changer EQ (for CD player only): Furman E151X2 Protection: Furman AV1215 Power Condition/Voltage Reg
  2. Thanks all for the tips. Gil - Sorry for the cryptic description(s). Essentially, the input to the adapter is threaded to the size of the output of the driver. Then it steps down from that thread diameter to a 5/8 inch diameter tube which is just over an inch in length. Then the tube terminates at a 3" diameter flange which bolts onto the horn input. I'll try and take a few pics tonight and post tomorrow. DJK - Did I hear you correctly offering an adapter up? What would it take to 'make medicine' on this? Let me know please! I'd like to try a couple more before deciding which is best to use. Thanks again! 3. Good day! My KHorns are somewhat elderly (pre 1955's) in that they came equipped from Klipsch with the University SAHF mid driver. The mid horns have been swapped out in favor of Altec 511B's. My Belle is a stock '80's era unit. I have collected the components (511 and SAHF) and would like to swap out these in the Belle to more evenly 'match' the KHorns. The 511 horn has the 'flange' type mount while the SAHF, like the K55V has the threaded output. I managed to come up with two flange to thread adapters. One is pretty much a 'flat mount', that is the threads open up into the flange. The other has about an inch and a quarter long 'tunnel' between the threads and the flange. Since I got the 'tunnel one first, that's what I hooked up on the workbench in the garage for a trial run. Then a few days later, I came across the flush ones and tried them. To my ears, it appears that the 'tunnel' adapter sounds better. Questions are: Should it or am I 'thinking' myself into circles? Also, the 'tunnel' between the input threads and the output flange is smaller in diameter than the output of the driver and the input on the horn.....like the output of the driver, as is the K55V, is about inch and an eighth. Input to the horn is slightly smaller, perhaps an inch or even 7/8ths. But both the tunnel and the aperture in the flush mount adapter are about 5/8ths. Is that normal or should I bore out whichever adapter I settle upon to 1"? Thanks!! ------------------ Ed Fronts: Pre-1955 Klipschorns (slightly modified) Center: 1984 Klipsch Belle Sub: Klipsch KSW200 Surrounds: Tannoy PSM6.5's Receiver: Denon AVR1701 Video: InFocus LP350 DLP front projector Satellite: DishNetwork 4722 (DD5.1) DVD: Panasonic A320 S-VHS: Panasonic PV-S7670 LaserDisc: Pioneer CDL-406 CD: Kenwood CD-404 5-Disc Changer EQ (for CD player only): Furman E151X2 Protection: Furman AV1215 Power Condition/Voltage Reg
  4. Hey HP....if you're not stuck on the original carton then I would recommend seperating the two pieces and shipping them seperately. I recently 'won' a Belle from e-bay and had it shipped this way. The benefit was that the two sub-pieces now were each under the maximum size criteria that UPS has. Depending on where it's shipping from/to, this should be the cheapest way to ship. Leaving it whole in the original carton I believe would foist you into the realm of 'shipping freight', and the high cost(s) associated. ------------------ Ed Fronts: Pre-1955 Klipschorns (slightly modified) Center: 1984 Klipsch Belle Sub: Klipsch KSW200 Surrounds: Tannoy PSM6.5's Receiver: Denon AVR1701 Video: InFocus LP350 DLP front projector Satellite: DishNetwork 4722 (DD5.1) DVD: Panasonic A320 S-VHS: Panasonic PV-S7670 LaserDisc: Pioneer CDL-406 CD: Kenwood CD-404 5-Disc Changer EQ (for CD player only): Furman E151X2 Protection: Furman AV1215 Power Condition/Voltage Reg

  6. As I read through this thread, one thing becomes abundantly clear: there are those that do....there are those that don't....and there are those that do both. File me in the latter catagory. Love my old Khorns. Love listening to my old Khorns hooked up to my Dynaco ST70, old AR turntable for 2 channel music. Love my old Khorns hooked up to my Denon, along with my Belle and rears for the HT experience. Love listening to CD's on my old Khorns hooked up to my Denon in 'stereo' mode. Upon reflection, I LOVE IT ALL!!!! (well, maybe not all the DSP 'fluff') It's all good to me. Could it be better? You bet!! That's why we all tweek our goods. But I try not to over analyze the material to the point of distraction from my pleasure. Certainly don't pass judgement upon fellow 'Klipscheads' because their personal preference or taste differs from my own. Philosophically, I try not to immerse myself too deeply in the technical aspects of sound. Thought I should a few weeks back to better understand some of the more technical discussions here and on other forums. But now I guess I've resigned myself to this simple fact (or maybe copout).... I trust my ears. I know what sound's good to my ears and what is satisfying both audibly and emotionally. This has really helped me 'enjoy' the whole experience....be it tube, SS, stereo, HT....whatever I happen to be into at the moment so that rather than constantly thinking how the experience could be better, I'm now thinking 'that sounds damn good'!......no sniff! required ------------------ Ed Fronts: Pre-1955 Klipschorns (slightly modified) Center: 1984 Klipsch Belle Sub: Klipsch KSW200 Surrounds: Tannoy PSM6.5's Receiver: Denon AVR1701 Video: InFocus LP350 DLP front projector Satellite: DishNetwork 4722 (DD5.1) DVD: Panasonic A320 S-VHS: Panasonic PV-S7670 LaserDisc: Pioneer CDL-406 CD: Kenwood CD-404 5-Disc Changer EQ (for CD player only): Furman E151X2 Protection: Furman AV1215 Power Condition/Voltage Reg
  7. Ah, regrettably, wouldn't work for us in CA. We've got this power crisis thing going on. I guess in the name of public sacrifice and to do my part towards the energy conservation effort, I'll just have to keep my Klipsch's........such a pity. And I was really looking forward to shelling out bazillions for that 'true reference quality' experience. Hey, maybe if I get some granite spikes like dude has on his pool table for my K-Horns........ ------------------ Ed Fronts: 1960's era Klipschorns (slightly modified) Center: 1984 Klipsch Belle Sub: Klipsch KSW200 Surrounds: Tannoy PSM6.5's Receiver: Denon AVR1701 Video: InFocus LP350 DLP front projector Satellite: DishNetwork 4722 (DD5.1) DVD: Panasonic A320 S-VHS: Panasonic PV-S7670 LaserDisc: Pioneer CDL-406 CD: Kenwood CD-404 5-Disc Changer EQ (for CD player only): Furman E151X2 Protection: Furman AV1215 Power Condition/Voltage Reg
  8. Hi ELSO and thanks for the information you posted both here and on the Asylum BB. I have to admit to being completely ignorant with regards to the intricacies of networks. "4th order Bessel Highpass, first order, second order, resistor leveling" is all Greek to me and has me scratching my head wondering if I have bit off more than I am equipped to chew! Perhaps I should read up or take a crash course. The sum total of my network knowledge goes something like: the crossover freq is the freq at which the signal from the source switches from the woofer, midrange or tweeter. So in the case of the K500-5000, all freq under 500hz would route to the woof, 500-5K to the mid and above 5K to the tweet. Oh, and ideally, you would want the respective drivers to be able to reproduce at those levels efficiently, right? So what does all the other jargon refer to? Sounds like it is much more complex than I stated. As far as "do you like this old crossover from before 1955(!) or do you more like the Klisch AA network, or Al Klappenbergers one or perhaps mine:"......hmmm....don't rightly know! I do know that I like the sound from my (now identified as) pre-1955 era K-Horns and I had hoped to sonically duplicate that sound in my newly aquired 1984 Belle Klipsch. Boiling it all down, it appears to still require good old fashion trial and error in tandem with personal preference/taste to make the final call! Thanks again! ------------------ Ed Fronts: 1960's era Klipschorns (slightly modified) Center: 1984 Klipsch Belle Sub: Klipsch KSW200 Surrounds: Tannoy PSM6.5's Receiver: Denon AVR1701 Video: InFocus LP350 DLP front projector Satellite: DishNetwork 4722 (DD5.1) DVD: Panasonic A320 S-VHS: Panasonic PV-S7670 LaserDisc: Pioneer CDL-406 CD: Kenwood CD-404 5-Disc Changer EQ (for CD player only): Furman E151X2 Protection: Furman AV1215 Power Condition/Voltage Reg
  9. Good Day! My K-Horns, admittedly 'vintage' (late 50's, early 60's?) have crossovers that have the designation: 'K500-5000 Klipschorn Crossover Network' on the metal label where you'd usually see 'AA' or 'AB'. It's a large beast, about 5 inches wide and 20+ inches long. Anybody know the specs on this guy or more importantly, where I might find another? ------------------ Ed Fronts: 1960's era Klipschorns (slightly modified) Center: 1984 Klipsch Belle Sub: Klipsch KSW200 Surrounds: Tannoy PSM6.5's Receiver: Denon AVR1701 Video: InFocus LP350 DLP front projector Satellite: DishNetwork 4722 (DD5.1) DVD: Panasonic A320 S-VHS: Panasonic PV-S7670 LaserDisc: Pioneer CDL-406 CD: Kenwood CD-404 5-Disc Changer EQ (for CD player only): Furman E151X2 Protection: Furman AV1215 Power Condition/Voltage Reg
  10. Hey Al, I have a 511A currently enroute to my house for my center Belle. Of course, now you have me sweating the size factor but that's probably a different post. My question is about the throat for the driver to 511 connection. Is there a stock AL throat that the K55 will just thread into? Do you know it's designation and perhaps where to get one? I believe that the 511A I'm getting has no throat what so ever. Thanks! ------------------ Ed Fronts: 1960's era Klipschorns (slightly modified) Center: 1984 Klipsch Belle Sub: Klipsch KSW200 Surrounds: Tannoy PSM6.5's Receiver: Denon AVR1701 Video: InFocus LP350 DLP front projector Satellite: DishNetwork 4722 (DD5.1) DVD: Panasonic A320 S-VHS: Panasonic PV-S7670 LaserDisc: Pioneer CDL-406 CD: Kenwood CD-404 5-Disc Changer EQ (for CD player only): Furman E151X2 Protection: Furman AV1215 Power Condition/Voltage Reg
  11. I have a ST-70 with a PAS 2 sitting out in the garage collecting dust and most likely, contact corrosion. Been thinking of pulling it out cleansing and setting it up either as a second room 'music only' setup or perhaps in the garage on the old 'audio workbench' to dink around with. I note with keen interest that there were several comments in this string regarding 'properly upgraded and modded' 'modified by VanAlstine'. Anybody out there know where I can get more info on these or other Dynaco mods/upgrades? ------------------ Ed Fronts: 1960's era Klipschorns (slightly modified) Center: 1984 Klipsch Belle Sub: Klipsch KSW200 Surrounds: Tannoy PSM6.5's Receiver: Denon AVR1701 Video: InFocus LP350 DLP front projector Satellite: DishNetwork 4722 (DD5.1) DVD: Panasonic A320 S-VHS: Panasonic PV-S7670 LaserDisc: Pioneer CDL-406 CD: Kenwood CD-404 5-Disc Changer EQ (for CD player only): Furman E151X2 Protection: Furman AV1215 Power Condition/Voltage Reg
  12. I too have this problem only with my KSW200. If I set it to auto, I have to turn the receiver volume up to the pin to get it to 'greenlight'. Once green, it seems to stay on unless there is a particularly long 'low-talking' sequence in which case it returns to red until i crank up the volume to the pin again. Now I just leave it on the whole time, 24x7.
  13. Survey say's......... 1. pair of (oiled) walnut forte's (the 1's) to replace my Tannoy PSM6.5 rear surrounds....anyone looking to shed? 2. daylite screen to replace the sheet of white plywood I'm currently using for a front projector screen 3. replace current stock woofer in my center Belle with a Stephens Trusonic 103LX 4. perhaps replace the mid-horn on that Belle with a Altec Lansing 511B 5. add DVD-Audio.... Does it ever end? Pics upon request! 14. Thanks Al.....food for thought. I would like to find a way to incorporate the 511B without having to change the height dimension as my fixed projector screen just clears the top of the Belle and goes to the ceiling. Could cut off the 511 flanges and just leave it 'open air', but then I have the wife thing to contend with. Hmmm.....what to do....what to do.....
  15. Very interesting. My KHorns also have the University SAHF mid-drivers but the tweets are University 4401's, mounted vertically. Also, the Woofers are 15" Stephens Trusonic 103LX. The only mod I made was to replace the fiberglass sectoral mid-horn in favor of the Altec 511B (and a whole lot of dampening putty to eliminate the inherant 511B's potential for 'ringing'). All pieces (except the 511B's) have 'Approved by PWK' labels. Sound is spacious and glorious. Bass extension from the Trusonics is deep and solid. Similar to current KHorns, but you truly 'feel' the sound. Like in your jaws and cheeks even at normal 'TV' listening levels. Also, the cabinets are slightly narrower (~28inches). Somebody once told me they were "KA's"? Finally, the crossovers are massive as compared to the AA on my center Belle and are not identified by a alphabetic set of letters, but rather just say 'Klipsch Klipschorn Network'. Not sure exactly what I've got here but they are definately keepers!!
  16. OK, so I'm new at this and posted a reply to the wrong thread! A thousand pardons. Q-Man: I agree with one of your next purchases.....the DVD-Audio. No system should be without one. However, I'm thinking for that Klipsch monument, you need a front projector! That way your audio doesn't totally overshadow your video. I'm running an In-Focus LP350 DLP projector between my K-Horns and over the top of my Belle center. 10ft diag, crystal clear, which I replaced my 50in ProScan with. Cost was less than 3K, it's HD/digital compatible/ready, has built in line doubler and elicits as many ooh's and aah's as the audio only used to! P.S. - The ProScan has now been demoted to the kid's room for Nintendo duties.
  17. Input from a 'nosy newbie, submitted for consideration: Q-Man: I agree with one of your next purchases.....the DVD-Audio. No system should be without one. My KHorns are (really) old and in fact came with the fibreglass sectoral horn (before Klipsch went with the current straight horn) with the University SAHF mid-drivers. 10 years ago I replaced the Klipsch sectorals with the 511B's (and about 50 lbs of dampning putty apiece to prevent inherant 511b 'ringing'). I have not looked back since. The result is a much more spacious and 'glorious' sound. I'm now toying with the idea of replacing the center Belle's straight horn with a 511B to better match the KHorns sonically. I'll be interested to see how you deal with the issue of the Belle's upper cavity being 8.75 tall whilst the 511B is 10 inches tall. If you cut the 511B's top and bottom flanges off, I believe you are still about half an inch too tall. Are you/did you 'raise the roof of your Belle's to accomodate the 511B?
  18. Howdy all, My first foray into this BB so please bear with me. I recently purchased a Belle from E-Bay to use as a center flanked by my (very) vintage K-Horns. The Belle had the cane cloth and my existing K-Horns were clothed in black. I purchased 2 yards of black ($20 per) from Klipsch. Arrived within a week. The hardest part of the replacement procedure was removing the cane cloth from the grill wood. About a billion staples! Once removed, re-stapling the black cloth and re-assembling the Belle took very little time. Pretty much if I could do it in a day, I figure anyone could! Hope this helps.
