  1. Yeah, but would doing all the necessary damping tweaks, sorbethane feet, dynamat, isolating the transport from the chassis with rubber or neoprene washers still kill a noisy transport if this was the source of noise. I would not get too excited with dynamat, the older DVD's have a problems with overheating due to the fact that most cases are poorly ventilated and the regulators can't disipate the heat. I have a Samsung 709, If you don't run this with the cover off, it just flat burns up. Good player otherwise. But it has a noisy transport too, and I'll probably try rubber washers under it. You may not want to tear into your player. Try some rubber door stops(or equivalent) or mike stehrSorbethane from the local hardware joint. Or pad under both units too. Thanx!
  2. Sounds like it boils down to one's taste in music. I have two SVS 16/46's to go with a two channel system with Chorus II's. This is plain overkill in most eyes, but not with my taste in music. You want the sub to extend the bottom end smoothly and matched as possible with the mains,IMO. So there is no need to crank them up. But the Cornwalls are horn loaded on the Bass, not passive radiators like Chorus's. So on that note, I gotta agree with Kelly and Tom's ideas. Either your taste in music doesn't require absolute bottom end, or you need a monstorous high-effciency horn-loaded sub cab with many drivers. Looks like all the Klipsch Pro sound subs are ported, or Bass reflex. These probably won't help much. THANX!
  3. cjk1026, those are nice! Hey Kelly, what brand of capacitors are in the stock B networks for the Cornwalls? Are they Aerovox, or Revox?(Probably the same brand here.) I have a pair of Aerovox 660v 2uF 6% metal can filter capacitors from the Transformers of a pair of trashed older Digital brand printers. They have 60hz on them though. Could these be used on a X-over circuit? They are the same value as the caps in the tweeter circuit of my Chorus II's. I'll have to experiment with this. THANX!

  5. If you agree with that, then Carver CDP's must not be that great. I still want to replace the op-amps with high quality ones,(BB 2134?)and use better caps and resistors in the LPF circuit, maybe upgrade the tube power supply cicuit with better parts, and possibly better grade valves. One thing about this player, I've tore into it five times to do various tweaks, and it always fires back up, very reliable. But I'm ready to tweak a Samsung 709 DVD player now, ala Bobwire. This player sounds better out of the box than my tweaked Carver and with mods makes a excellent CD audio player. Movies too. I'm on a budget, so these are the paths I have to take, though I like the tweak hobby too. THANX!
  6. No offense Ear, But I have a older Carver sda/490t tube output player. I gave a shot at tweaking this thing, made some improvements but bottom line was, this thing was so full of cheap parts the matter of tweaking it came down to pretty much a major rebuild to make any improvments in sound. You think Bob would have a step-up transformer after the DAC into the tube cicuit. (You couldn't do this anyway because current/voltage of the Technics MASH DAC used.) But no, hey parks the tube circuit after 9 cheap Japanese Radio Corporation Op amps that are behind the DAC. So what ever nasties the cheap LPF circuit passes goes right through the $12.00 tubes. This thing is Sh*t design, but I will experiment more on it.(I like a challenge.) Bob carver has made some cool stuff nonetheless, That tube amp of his, comes to mind, and others, his subs too. But you gotta give up on that Carver sunfire bragging. Sell all your Carver subs and whatever else you have and get a pair of SVS SS's power them with the proper amp, and then you can get over Carver. HAR,HAR,HAR,HAR! I remember reading why he came up with the Sunfire, WAF, she didn't like large subs, Right! Like they live in a one bedroom apartment or something. Doesn't Bob have a dedicated listening room? Bob Carver is just like Bill Gates, Good at marketing. THANX!
  7. I just bought a pair of SVS 16/46's.(16hz,46" tall.) for my Chorus II's. Trust me, I'm not strapping with cash here either. I had Rockford Fosgate 8ohm pro-sound in a home-brew ported box for years, with a NAD 2100 power envelope bridged.(boomy boom boom.) I couldn't afford a amp with the subs so I stuck with the NAD to power the 16/46's. These subs are 350w continous with 600w peaks. I knew the NAD wasn't this much power, and was concerned. But they work fine with the amp, bridged and series wired. These puppies get deep, and they do extend the bottom end in a musical way, no boom, I was impressed. Only listened to 'em for a few hours, before I shut it down though.(In the middle of a X-over upgrade for the mains.) I would like to get a amp to get up in the hair/eye moving levels, but considering the size of my place, and the fact that I wouldn't listen too long at those levels anyway, during long listening sessions. So it's no biggee. With a little hunting, you can find deals at thrift stores, hock shops, Ebay, but Caveat Emptor. THANX!
  8. I rooted around in the Army websites for hours last night trying to find info about this thing. Everytime I would get near anything to do with battlefeild Acoustics, the files required password acsess or did not exist. Could be ARL(Army Research Labs) yanked the files and the photo after Prosound posted it. They list many directorates, but not Battlefeild Enviroment Directorate. (The directorate labeled on the side of the weapon.) The only thing I seen was a weapon a little larger than M60 that worked on the same acoustic principals. One thing I read that was pretty interesting, was the Hostile Combat Simulator, A 2500 foot acoustic chamber with 50,000 watts, 33 loudspeaker systems, 12 subwoofer systems, 40 amps, mixed with 12 channel mixer. 155 Decibals. The room had huge projection screens too, if I recall. Now that's a Home Theater system. THANX!
  9. I kind of remember reading somewhere about this thing, (On the net on a forum?) but no pictures. If I recall, from what I read, If your in the path of this thing, it completly pulverizes your internal organs into mush, and from long distances. (But I am not sure if this is the particular weapon mentioned.) THANX! Too much bass.
  10. Hell, I think they were only $1100 or $1200 new. They are not even in natural finish, just black. (I figured $700 $800 is the usual going price.) Geuss I better hang on to my black ones for dear life. That's Ebay for Ya. THANX!
  11. Hey Ears, do you have a HT setup, and a setup for music(You know, the purist setup.) THANX!
  12. Do you live by any major power lines or radio stations? Seems like some sort of airborne interference. Weird. THANX!
  13. Try some of that spray cleaner for dirty pots and tuners and stuff. It could be the pot is dirty, hence the scratchy noise. You can get the stuff at radio shack, or if you want Audiophile's choice, there's that Caig Pro-gold stuff.(Probably Spendy.) I think this stuff will work for dirty pots, but the rat shack stuff would be fine in your case. I have used the RS spray it works, good for old audio gear with dirty pots. THANX!
  14. Kevin, Even if you have minimal soldering skill it is still a very easy mod. You just take his list of new value Capacitors, and solder them to the back of the board, you don't have to remove the old caps either. It was easier for me to do this than using the paper and pencil method. Thanx!
  15. Glad to see someone doing the Cat5 wire tweek. I'm just finishing up my twisted FEP Cat5 cables. I have enough to wire everything including X-overs and internal speaker wire connections for my Chorus II's. It's been slow and I hope it's worth the effort. Thanx!
  16. Gee Tom, is there a english version of this graph? (Can't make much sense of it in swedish, or whatever.) I think I get the idea, as lower frequencys have wider bandwidths. Ear, my closest experience to 140db was being behind a pair F115's taking off together from a dead stop with backburner's on, from about 150 yards away. It was intense, your eardrums push in, the lower frequencys POUND against your chest, the higher frequencys let you know that there is a threshold of pain. The 90db string trimmer completly faded away in the noise, I thought they were on top of me. I'm a groundskeeper on a AFB, and that day, I had no hearing protection. Been wearin' the protection muffs ever since. It take some diamond eardrums to withstand music at 140db levels. Thanx!
  17. Hey guys, Here's a site to do a modification to the Radio Shack 33-2050 SPL meter for extended LF and HF frequency response. http://www.gti.net/wallin/ This way you don't have to calibrate for it's Low and High frequency anomalies. (Though the mic mod is recommended for the HF response, it's not really that necessary.) I did it, it's easy and the meter is really sensitive now.(I did not do the mic mod.) He has a mod for the Digital meter also. Interesting site. Check it out. THANX! Mike.
  18. Pardon me, but doesn't 3db's here or 4db's there really make much difference? I don't think these are enough variances in decibels to make a night and day difference. Is this just about Sound Pressure Levels? SPL is a good thing nonetheless, but shouldn't we worry about overall performance? BTW, I really LIKE my 16/46's. THANX!
  19. Has anyone tried this yet? And if so, Did one notice a improvement? They do have a ringing ''Klack'' to them when you thwack 'em with a finger. I (THINK) it should make a difference. THANX!
  20. Will this work? Or would some quarters work? What about unicorns? I'm sorry, I only have a ''Lower star rating'' and should be regarded as ''Inferior to audio''. Please Help. THANX!
  21. So are single play SACD players in this price range currently? Some people like changers some people don't. (Sorry about the slam on changers.) Hell, if SACD audio is getting this cheap, I'll wait a year a so until they saturate out there a little bit. Hmmmm, used? The CD's IMO, are a tad spendy still,(Though down around twenty bucks.) THANX!
  22. I bought two Diaphrgms for K-79 tweeter. It's real simple to replace, they give you instuctions, but be careful of the dome. (Though the mid horn's dome is more than likely harder than tweeter domes.) I was kinda leary when I replaced these, but its easy. I'm sure the Diaphragm replacement for mid's is the same way. THANX!
  23. So what about the Weedhead that f****D up his receiver? Give it up! kill the thread!
