I am testing a 15 yr old cartridge with few hours on it, but the owner can't remember the model. Its a Benz Micro but there are no other markings. Any thoughts?

That's a great list. I have several of those and without measuring have enjoyed them very much. The cleanup seems to be often more important than the resolution.

Indigos is IMO the finest DE recording there is. The version from HDTT is way better than the CD and other digital downloads. Oh yeah! I went on a bender for Duke Ellington recently and another one I found that I really like is Duke Ellington - All Star Road Band, Vol 1. Recording isn't great but has decent dynamics and between the sound and the performance it made the hair on my arms stand on end! YMMV. HDTT also has Ellington Live! which is a sonic delight.

High Def Tape Transfers www.highdeftapetransfers.com has some good stuff that is not in the CD or digital domain. As far as HD tracks you have to be selective. There are some things remastered well and at higher resolutions than CD. Then there are some remastered, at higher resolution that have been ruined. (IMO). I have some luck on Acoustic Sounds http://store.acousticsounds.com/ .

Ok, maybe I got it wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. Not going to go back to confirm what I thought I heard while talking with someone while consuming adult beverages. Seeing as how Hartsfield designed the speaker it could be that is who is was talking about. It's plausible and probable. The son of the guy who owned the speakers probably got it wrong. He is only 40.

Thanks for the responses. I now have time to type in the story behind these speakers. The gentleman that bought these originally was friends with Mr. Lansing. I am told the first was purchased not too long after Hartsfields went into production. It was driven my a Scott amp and was considered state of the art at that time, early to mid fifties I believe. Then several years later stereo became popular and the second speaker was purchased along with two Macintosh amplifiers and a preamp. The gentleman actually worked with Mr. Lansing to design the living room in his new house with the speakers in mind. When my friend the son inherited the house and its contents I got a chance to hear the system some time in the early 2000s. It was remarkable. Bass was impressive, but it could have been because of the corner placement of the Hartfields. The amps had recently been refurbished so the mid range was really balanced and vocals were sweet. Having owned Jubilee clones I am really curious to see how the bass bins compare, if I get a shot at actually buying the Hartsfields. They are tied up in estate issues because the matriarch recently passed away.

I have a chance to buy a pair of these in good condition. Anybody heard them before? Could they be mated with a better high end? Brad

MiniDSP? The miniDSP is what Dave used. I used one when I ran a analogue pre-amp but because most of my music was in digital I simplified my signal path running one D to A with an Apogee sound card connected to a Mac running Pure Music. If I were to use a miniDSP I would have a chain of D to A - A to D - D to A. The miniDSP is an amazing piece of gear but if your drivers are super efficient the noise floor is audible during quiet parts. The passive have the effect of pushing the noise floor well below audible even with noisier tube amps.

Mdeneen - I tried to implement Dave's recommended 200 Hz low end 3rd order coupled with 400 Hz 1st order for the full ranger in my digital active software but couldn't get there. The passive's use those settings.

I have had my Yields now for almost a year. Whether its hard rock or mellow jazz the speakers have performed beautifully. Bass is full and tight. The Audio Nirvana full ranger images so well that its spooky listening to musicians moving around in some bluegrass recordings. When I purchased the speakers Justin sent me the passive crossovers that I believe ALK designed according to Dave Harris's active settings. The components tore loose in shipping which made them inoperable so I used an active crossover with Dave's settings to great pleasure. My good friend Tom Brucker at High Tech Service here in Nashville finally got around to rebuilding the passives and I have been using the Yields with the passives for a week or so now. Wow what a difference. The sound is more pleasing to the ear. Its hard for me to put my finger on it exactly but maybe they sound balanced.

I keep running into Jack here in Nashville, on the Tonight show the last two times I tuned in at random. Jack is such a free spirit, willing to try just about anything and so much of it works. I have a 16 yr old Sunfire True Sub Signature that has had a speaker failure. Rebuild kits don't seem to be available as I have spoken with Bill Flannery who cares for legacy Carver stuff but doesn't do speakers. If I have to source a replacement speaker I suppose I need to know technically what I would be looking for. Not being an audio engineer I would like to know what specs I need to match in a replacement besides size, ohms and sensitivity. Thanks

A sports fan is one thing. A hockey fan is yet another. The power, grace and speed are awe inspiring when the game is played at a high level. What is needed to get the players to a state of high enough motivation is a long dull season where the players look for entertainment any where they can find it. Check out the attached uTube. Sloppy reading on my part.From the report: Mid-range driver is attenuated nearly by 5 dB. It works from 600Hz up to 20 kHz and above, free and without any crossover limitation. So, above 6 kHz mid-range speaker - limited only by its natural roll-off frequency - electrically operates in parallel with the tweeter. So I mistakenly took the graph just below the above quote to be the operation of the drivers when its obviously the operation of the crossover.

i thought that was in the report. No band pass in the crossover for the mid range driver just a 600hz high pass.

Maybe I missed as I read the test report quickly over several sittings while doing other stuff, but given the sqwaker goes to 20kHz and the tweeter covers the same ground, what advantages are gained from the overlap and why? I am sure someone has tried a two way cornwall. Later I will try to find where that has been tried and explained, but its facinating to a non engineer how the three way cornwall works. I love the digital vs analog views at the end of the report.

That's a feature I miss in the older AR speakers. The ability to tweak the mid and high output to adapt to the room can really make a big difference.Really nice crossovers.

What about the rest of the range? Low end and high end.

i always was a fan of reggae music in the 70s. My son says that's why I like early dubstep. He complains that most of what is called dubstep is really house or something else. No matter the low end and drops are fun.

Its frustrating to try and shop for a shelf system to play CDs, have AM/FM and be easy to use for an older lady. Been looking at Best Buy and online at Amazon. Lack of response here tells me I may have to buy pre-loved to get something my mother in law will be able to use.
