  1. one difference between the different outputs could be the gain, check volume levels on the computer if the gain is too high out of the HDMI it could sound harsh. Also if you are going out thru HDMI, you are bypassing any processing from that sound card right? One more thing, you are testing with quality sound files right? crappy stuff sounds crappier with better equipment. i don't understand this sentence, which is it? all the speakers sounded like crap, or 5.1 sounds good?
  2. Pardon my ignorance but I would need to buy another resistor? The only bad question is the one you don't ask. You'll need one of THESE per speaker. thanks for the link. I am taking the plunge, for only 10 dollars including shipping. I bought extras. I like the idea you can snip it if it was not good. I personally don't notice the ring (unless its a really crappy CD source). Or at least nothing runs me out of the room. It's either my ears or I have a perfect room! I've had my RF7's over a decade and a half. I bought extra to do the RC63 center channel if needed, I belive Dean once said you can do it to. Did I remember that right? Wasn't there also once a mod on here that involved using a nickle?
  3. I have to add to this discussion, I have the XPA5 running 5 of my Klipsch for over 4 years now. (all but the RF35s). No hiss, no hum. & If you want to save even more money, I can't even see the need for the XPR over the XPA. and I play average 10 - 15 below reference a lot, in a large room.
  4. Even the RC41 is almost 9 inches deep, you are going to need a huge mantel. and my experiance is for 5.1 you want to mount sides, not rear.
  5. female banana plug[] I'm going to start calling it that.
  6. We went to the D Day National World War II museum in New Orleans that weekend. Just a coincidence that it was Memorial Day actually, we were in town for another event. Anyway, quite humbling. It cost to get in (19.00) but honestly that museum should be free so no one would have any excuse not to see it. That is a story and time that should not be forgotten, and lessons that everyone should know.
  7. The XPA2 is 300 watts RMS x 2 into 8 ohms, 500 watts RMS x 2 into 4 ohms. and actually it has measured more. P.S. and My RF7 with the XPA 5 are dead quiet when they are supposed to be.
  8. What year is yours? mine just says 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. curious as to what order they are in. I wired mine so the L and R are on opposite sides and center in the middle, then sides are 2 and 4. Just for order and I thought it might help with heat, not that it ever gets hot.
  9. However... I have COX Cable digital, and a Scientific Atlantic box. If you go into programming and select a future TV show for a reminder to watch later, the digital audio signal of the current program becomes limited and sounds very compressed. I found this out by accident going from no program in waiting while watching a concert on Palladium in Dolby Digital to setting a program to watch later, then taking the reminder back off. There is an extreme difference in sound quality and volume. (Volume had to be moved from -25 to -16!) And the compression becomes intolerable. I was since told DVR programming can effect this too. Try this with your set up, you may have to have no reminders, programs, etc in waiting to get best sound. Probally bandwidth issues.
  10. the format is supposed to make access to the art easier (as well as make a profit for someone) but at the same time the formats is having a big effect on the art itself. For example the art of the "concept album" is mostly lost. I would bet classical music, especially longer pieces are taking a hit too. When checking out new artists, it's got to pass the 5 second sound byte test sometimes. p.s. I REALLY would have bet that music video would have taken a larger share, so far it didn't.
  11. That is referring to the cross over setting for the subwoofer [edit] cross over setting for the bass infomation from each channel to be sent to the subwoofer instead of that channel speaker producing that infomation ...is that better?[end edit] . So depends on what sub you have and power of the receiver also. Besides getting info for that specifc gear you're best bet it to search and read the plethoria of information on "subwoofer set up" all over the net, most explain the theories and advantages of the different settings.
  12. "Of COURSE it's a SUB Woofer dear, it's down there in that horn cone, not on the surface like those 2 other woofers......"
  13. I think it depends on how loud you play them. Mine are 22/24 inches form the back wall. And I notice a difference in bass if they are closer. Cleaner, louder, further out, these speakers really push some air. Might depend on type of wall or panels back there too. Mine is sheet rock on studs. Mine are even with the center RC64 at across and height wise for the horns.
