  1. Ok, it seems he was not exactly as I thought he would be (in person at least). But I still miss him.
  2. I miss him and his thoughtful lengthy posts/responses. He also had quite a setup.
  3. Don't have an answer to your issue but good to see you here again!
  4. Okay, just thinking out loud here but what if I said I wanted to do something (could be anything really, doesn't have to be audio related) that I could manage on my own or at max have only a few people and still make good money? Any recommendations/opinions/comments?
  5. Thanks for the replies. Actually, my father owns and runs his own business (an insurance brokerage) which I am currently working for. The reason I want to try something else is that I want to do something in line with my passion/hobby. Ideally, I would want to run a business where I can manage and handle everything on my own (or at max have only a few people). I really dislike depending on people (for certain things) because I feel they will never do as good of a job as me (i.e. if you want to do something right, do it yourself). However, if we can manage to bring our insurance brokerage business to a level where it would simply run on its own without my father being there everyday (I know this statement is contradicting me not liking depending on people), that would be the ideal situation because all I would have to do in life is worry about my passions/hobbies and not about money. Guess I should just stick with what I am doing now. Lastly, the high-end enthusiast home theater scene here in Dubai is quite small. Even thought nearly every major audio brand is available here, not many people actually own high-end or "enthusiast" home theaters. I was watching a show on TV that was showcasing some people's houses in Dubai and one of the houses had a home theater. It had a large projection screen hooked-up to Bose-like speakers.
  6. I was just thinking and reading about this, and some sources say that you should not turn your passion into a career because once you start doing everyday all day, you'll grow tired of it. What do you guys think? Home theater is my passion and I absolutely love the audio side of home theater. I won't call myself an audiophile (because I might not have all the technical know-how of sound and speakers) but I love good sound and speakers. Is it possible to make good money in the home theater industry/business?
  7. Thanks for the replies. One more question. Someone stated in my thread on the AVS Forum that in a 5.x setup, the surround speakers should not be at an angle greater than 120 degrees. Is this true? He said that when the angle is greater than 120 degrees, the sense of spaciousness is decreased. My question is that in an IMAX theater (which I think are all 5.1), the surround speakers are basically on the back wall slightly toed-in. Isn't that angle far greater than 120 degrees?
  8. Thanks for the replies. Didn't think about placing the surrounds on stands while on the subwoofers. However, I just got another idea. How about placing the surrounds on full-size stands making them above ear-level and placing one subwoofer in between the two surround speakers? That would mean a total of 3 subwoofers. Are 3 subwoofers a good idea or should you stick with 1, 2, 4, etc.?
  9. Which do you think would be the better choice for me (based on the room layout I posted): 1. 4 subwoofers with the left/right front and left/right surround speakers each placed on a subwoofer. All speakers at ear-level. Center speaker on stand. 2. 2 subwoofers with the left/right front speakers each placed on a subwoofer. Surround speakers placed on stands positioning them above ear-level. Center speaker on stand. Basically, 4 subwoofers with all speakers at ear-level or 2 subwoofers with LCR at ear-level and surrounds above ear-level.
  10. Thanks for the replies. Are the surround speakers in movies mastered with the thought in mind that they will be placed above ear-level? If yes, does placing them at ear-level "degrade" the surround effect intended by the sound designers?
  11. How is this for a 5.4 setup? Basically, I have 4 subwoofers in each corner of the home theater with the left/right front speakers and the left/right surround speakers placed on top of the subwoofers. The surround speakers will be angled towards the seating position. Even though I have not illustrated it, the front left/right speakers will also be slightly toed-in. Questions: 1. Could I fit in back surround speakers for a 7.4? I am assuming no because with a 7.x setup, the left/right surround speakers should be in front of the left/right back surround speakers (i.e. all four surround speakers in a 7.x setup should not be against the back wall). 2. Would 4 subwoofers be too many for a room of this size? If not, is their placement acceptable (even though I don't have any other option for placing them)? 3. Is it okay to have the surround speakers at ear-level (more so having the tweeter in the surround speakers at ear-level)?
  12. Is it still worth getting a projector when the largest screen size I can support physically is around 65-70"? Wouldn't it make more sense to just get a TV if I am limited to this screen size?
  13. Just thought I would update this thread. Basically, I am going put the upgrade on hold. I have decided to turn the current home theater room into a bedroom and one of the bedrooms into the home theater. This will allow me to have a 65" (or even slightly larger) TV and spread out the left/right speakers more for better stereo separation. Only grip is that the new home theater room is almost or basically a square. It is also about the same width but shorter in length compared to the current home theater room. Let's see how it turns out! By the way, I am not going to exchange the two rooms till I am ready to re-build the home theater from the ground-up. I'll be replacing everything so I might as well just leave it as it is till I am ready to start a new home theater from scratch (which will include UHD/4K, new speakers, etc.).
  14. Thanks. I'm in Dubai. You can't do the "take home" audition here.
  15. Have a look at this post on the AVS Forum: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1497598/anthem-mrx-receivers-310-510-710-owners-thread-tweaking-guide/1830#post_24612207 Faulty unit or the MRX 710 cannot handle the impedance swings of the RF-7s? How is the reliability on the Denons?
  16. Thanks. So the MRX 710 will be able to power my RF-7 based 5.1 setup to reference level easily? I also know it has a fan or fans inside. Are they loud?
  17. Read around on the Anthem MRX 710 and is it as good as the reviews say? Some went as far as saying that this is the closest you can get to separates with an A/V receiver. http://www.anthemav.com/products-current/collection=performance/model=mrx-710/page=reviews http://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/anthems-mrx-710-close-separates-av-receiver-gets/
  18. Don't really like the looks of the Marantz and, from what I've read, the Denon comparable to these units did not match their sound quality.
  19. Okay, I think I am back to square-one. I think it's better if I just get a new A/V receiver to power my speakers along with a new HDTV and Blu-ray player because I am planning on completely re-doing my home theater in a few years (at least 3-4). No need to spend mega bucks on what I have now just to replace it later. So, I am down to the Pioneer Elite SC-79 and the Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A3030. Is the Yamaha better built?
  20. Will new audio codecs be released along side the release of 4K? Will current A/V processors be outdated if this is the case?
  21. Ah, ok. By the way, will there ever be 4K Blu-ray(?) discs or will 4K be all about streaming? I've heard reports saying there will be discs and some saying there will be no discs.
  22. Less risk with a smaller TV? Not sure what you mean.
  23. So, I am thinking of this for my DVD to Blu-ray upgrade: TV: Sony KDL-42W800 (I know it is only a 42" but I don't have space for a larger TV) Blu-ray Disc Player: OPPO BDP-103 Preamplifier: Yamaha AVENTAGE CX-A5000 Amplifier: Parasound Halo A 51 Now I'll just have to wait a few months to save up for the upgrade.
  24. Thanks. I was looking about Blu-ray players and was wondering is the OPPO BDP-103D worth the extra $100 over the BDP-103? What is the Darbee processing and is it worth it?
  25. So there should not be any issue with investing in 1080p right now considering its product life cycle? It will be at least 4-5 years before I change anything again in my home theater.
