In my perception, there are two different types of SQ influencing variables in a DAC. One are the ones I get used to quite quickly. If the difference between a $400 to a $5000 DAC were marginal differences...because the more expensive DAC delivers slightly drier bass or is a touch more transparent, for example, I would very likely forget it after three days, both the "advantage of the expensive DAC and the "disadvantage" of the cheaper DAC, much like some interconnect cables.
On the other hand, there are differences that I hear very clearly and where I would miss the better device. I had a Bluesound Node 2i until two years ago. It was ok, but the difference to its successor, the Bluesound Node 2021, is worlds apart. In contrast, the old Node 2i is pleasant on the ear but has so much less timing, dynamics, spatial separation, etc. The difference with low res CD is much greater than with high res recordings. The new Node has a completely different converter structure.

    Bench test

running sine waves through both units

and compare the wave decodes side by side on an oscilloscope

Freq sweep charts would be very cool

Depends on who you ask. 🙂

KH was designed for one speaker in mono, with a low watt tube amp in 1942.

LS is superior in every way for 2 speaker listening, corners, no corners, sub no sub, sitting not standing, movable,

I could have purchased either, and thought the LS was the clear choice for many reasons ,the first being sound quality and flexibility

But are the La Scala and the Klipschorn sonically similar, with the Klipschorn having a bit more and deeper bass?
Isn't the Klipschorn overall a step up from the La Scala?

Exactly, KH goes a little deeper is very placement sensitive and the mids are above ear level when sitting.

LS CAN BE PLACED ANYWHERE, MIDS AT EAR LEVEL WITH 4 IN CASTERS,  AND BASS CAN BE AUGMENTED WITH 1-2 SUBS IN THE CENTER BETWEEN THE LS

  4. Draw a diagram of your current set up

    include the connections and types

laptop is your best dac, a c- at best.

get an inexpensive usb dac for $100 or less

    connected to the pc

    Emotiva big ego is good

check amazon, there are many good ones.

I haven't studied blutooth, but suspect it is bandwidth limited.

    get a wireless keyboard

    connect pc to tv hdmi

can also buy an hdmi upscaler later for better pic if needed

  5. The coder sw and decoder sw results can vary substantially by protocol.

IF you take the same bit stream and code and decode it, the differences by protocol and bit rate can be dramatic.

We evaluated 8 protocols years ago, mp3 was beta quality.

As to the competing services, lots of database features, catalog and quality.

Some record labels put out better Quality consistently

Some remasters are loudness wars dogs

A service could curate all of catalog, would be a herculean effort.

Approx 30% of the CDs I listen to get donated. The rest I rip 200 every winter

I think a lot of it has to do with the younger generations being raised on MP3 downloads.  They’re just used to being able to buy/download anything with the click of a button.

The fact that streaming quality is significantly better than MP3 probably doesn’t give much motivation to have physical media.

Vinyl records surpassed CD sales this year

Every pop artist now published on vinyl

    You can't stream vinyl

Record players are selling like hot cakes.

And you see ads for various electronic pieces or streaming services that promise "CD Quality!" and often don't even come close.  If you want CD quality, pop in a CD.  Better quality?  Pop on an LP.  Want better yet?  DVD (in my opinion, anyway).  Blu-ray is even better, but if you're listening on a crap stereo, the ranking might be different, and the extra detail retrieval of the DVD and Blu-ray won't even be noticeable.

Could it be that the music is just wallpaper surrounding the listener's epic daily life?  The funny thing is that people like Brian Eno have been making music for that purpose, and yet it's the pop music that's the soundtrack of many folks' days.  At least the youth have the excuses of lack of money or knowledge.  At 16, I was really happy with my little 6 transistor radio, complete with earplug (just one, it was mono), listening to stuff like Brown Eyed Girl, or Itchycoo Park or A Whiter Shade of Pale, stuff that really spoke to me, lol.  Pictures of Matchstick Men, by Status Quo, with its amazing use (overuse, maybe, but at the time...) of the new gadget, the wah-wah pedal, was an ear worm for a while.  There wasn't much in the way of distortion gear for guitarists back then.  In the early and mid Sixties, the sound of the fuzz box was part of most of the cool songs, but when the wah appeared, the fuzz tone sort of faded away, because it was so yesteryear.

Hmm, that comment digressed into a nostalgic sort of rant, or maybe reminiscence is a better word.  Maybe some you guys remember those tunes.

Your 6 transistor mono radio was high tech at the time.

Almost everything we take for granted was magic before 1900

My grandfather remembered seeing the first car in his town,

then the space shuttle in his lifetime.

    Emily the criminal, 2022

Shows what can be done with a plot, a decent script and acting.

No big ticket car chases, explosions etc.

More like a 1940s movie. Though the director makes no effort to emulate a 1940s movie. Good effort, and the director's first time out.

Much better than most of this batch of current releases from my library. Most don't make it 10 mins in my player. There are lots of big names in trope laden lecturing movies aka garbage.

    Budget $1.5–2 million[1][2]
    Box office

    $2.2 million
