  1. You can buy world beater used surround amps that AB on all channels, auto eq for the room and speakers etc.

Pioneer Elite, or Totl Yamahs and others for $100.

I'm pretty sure one of the older yammies i have runs class A for the first watts, then goes AB, it's old school first attempt surround statement product, $4k when new if memory is correct. Can be had for near zero today.

Get a mint pre HDMI for almost nothing. Be sure to get the mic and manual if it has auto EQ like the pioneers.

  2. Congrats!!

Corners if possible, or at least a little further apart.

Better if unobstructed from line of sight when listening, damps the sound, can the sofa be moved out of the line of sight?

Had mine since 1982, have never been moved to change speakers after any listening session with other speakers.

    Forte 2s are great sleepers.

For the LaScalas in your space, 2 watts will take your head off, why all the amplification ?

Having said that my amp puts out 200W per channel with most listening at .01 watts.

  3. Drinking my coffee and looking out the window, it looked like a good day for pulling weeds,

so I grabbed my backpack and headed off to AXPONA near O'Hare Airport in Chicago.

Clear blue skies, 25 minutes later, and the weeds in the rear view mirror......I arrived.

All of the usual suspects were at the show, which is moving to a larger venue next year,

and since the show was only 10-4pm on Sunday. I hit less than 10% of the rooms.

Two speakers and a monster mono amp system can still be had for $50-150K......

Looked at two Mac 1000W mono blocks, you would need a tow truck to lift them.

    Marketplace Room
I did a quick pass through the market place,

and headed for the headphones....which IMHO is where the action, and money are in audio.

Marketplace: $60 Moomat.com cow and cork turntable mats were interesting; along with "delmark".com  recording studio and label in Chicago.

Steve at delmark, if recording in Chicago, would be worth interviewing....can always tell when someone loves their craft.

Note: I am consistently amazed by the number, small but memorable,

of booth staff who's personalities are best suited for night staff janitorial services....working alone.

    Ear Gear Room

Headphones could easily be their biggest room, or series of continuous rooms, there are so many new models and headphone amps.

Lots of open and closed cans and in the ear models; the open cans are difficult to appreciate in a large noisy space.

It would be easy to leave with a dozen pairs of new headphones and amps to go with them

..............Lacking funds and space I left empty handed, funds the limiting factor.

If you have an extra $2000 laying around, or can rationalize the purchase as a "necessity",

MrSpeaker.com closed cans would be an easy decision.

Reminds me of the Yamaha Mario Bellini headphone sling design, an all time favorite.

    Reel to Reel

Decks were everywhere....would gladly see them swapped out for booth bunnies.....

BASF is back in the tape business, and ...was it 1 and 2 inch studio tape is available $$$$$

Steve at delmark told me his deck runs at 30 inches per second

....lots of musicians want to record all analog, but the cost of 10 reels takes their breath away.

    Product of the Show IMHO

    Sugarcube by Sweetvinyl.com

In a nutshell, this product does real-time D/A and A/D conversion

and uses proprietary algorithms for encoding and noise removal,

it can be connected to a local storage device like a USB stick or to a  4tb hard disk etc,

or networked to a NAS disk array, preferably RAID, with all of your nice recordings.

    Functional description:

drop the needle on the record,

auto master a digital version with auto LP title and track listings (think the buzzword is meta data)

auto pop and click removal while not destroying the dynamic range on the recording.

You can do this while listening to the record real time, source, or cleaned up version.

    Alternatives:

Lots of AD DA converters on the market...... Focusrite getting the most love

McIntosh has their new Phono Pre Amp with AD conversion built it, but does it do DA playback?

PC software for pops and clicks, some better than others

ION etc turntables with built in pop click software, probably not as good as the above.

  4. Checked the News Section first, but didn't look below, article already posted.

"In Dalston, in northeast London, the Brilliant Corners restaurant lives up to its name: Large floor-standing speakers by Klipsch (worth $6,000 each) are in each corner of the main room. The venture was opened three years ago by Amit and Aneesh Patel, brothers who had discovered the pleasure of deep listening at Lucky Cloud parties. "

What's the most important aspect to getting great sounding digital audio?

The original recording and mastering job.

    Quantizaiton Error

    Compressing the track

    Loudness Wars

Who mastered the recording for the medium, and the artist who has final say.

A lot of the modern pop is full of psycho-acoustics to try to hide the effects of the low bit rates.

    Is HI-Rez worth the effort?

Depends on all of the above, considering just Quantization Error, more bits is always better.

    Is 320kbps good enough?

    NO

What to look for when buying a DAC?

The last time I read a shoot out, the DAC makers in the $500 and up range had achieved parity.

I like my Emotiva DAC pre amp with all of the interfaces etc, MAC looks good too in this same respect.

    Different options for using DSP?

The DSP should auto synch with the signal it is receiving, what options?

My recent change from USB to HDMI feeding my DAC has transformed my listening experience. My knowledge in this area is very limited but help from others here (you know who you are) has helped immensely and hopefully others who are interested and/or getting into digital audio for the first time can benefit from this discussion.

USB is a real data comm protocol with CRC ARQ error correction, so with a good cable and no grounding problems it is the best.

Isn't HDMI hi res VGA and USB in the same cable?

  7. my two cents

Bi-amping changes the load the amp is seeing.

Bi-amping if you have amps up to your eyeballs ( I admit I have a problem), gives you more reserve and headroom for each channel.

Bi amping gets you away from any heat concerns you may have with a receiver and allows you to run an entire rack of your fav Amp Class A, AB, B etc...and generate even more heat.

Bi wiring, not sure there is an argument for it, or even a good definition, moving the crossover out of the speaker and closer to the amp?

If I had the time and the desire, and the room, it would be easy to conduct an experiment and play some tracks to see if there is an audible difference.

If you wanted to go all out, you could run an oscilloscope on test signal, or set up monoblocks and run one speaker bi and one standard and compare the signals.

Generally speaking, the simplest solution with the least number of parts and complexity...... is the best.

A big fat wire of good quality, twisted pairs if you are worried about cross-talk, and good connectors.....done.

  8. No doubt some speakers perform better than others, but not in every way for every application.

I would think any of the Heritage would sound pretty good in every respect if the room geometry and damping are good.

My Heresy 1s sound great in my 16x16 bedroom at head level inc image.

My experience is that a room that is at least 20 x 30 sounds pretty good in every respect inc imaging.

My LaScalas sound ...image....very well in just about any room, K-Horns did too when I was sampling side by side in 1980, better than any other product in the line.

As to the up-reved or Jubilee, I doubt they would perform worse, most likely better as next gen and uprevs of proven engineers, designs and products.

All of the guys pitched in to help make this a nice gathering.  Thanks to all the guys that came and made this a special day!  My wife said the gys were polite and so respectfull of our home.  She was amazed at how neat things were after the gtg.:)  More later.

Derrick, which Morchiba LP were you playing?

PS several asked that I post the info on the DVD, it's Euro Format only and goes for about $15 on Amazon. Worth every penny IMHO.

Does anyone know the name of the Media Player we were using it seemed to perform well,

I usually use VLC for Vids and Media Monkey for my home NAS playback on a lap top.
