  1. Holy Cow!! Very very nice. Please don't go deaf hehe. ------------------ Main System - CORNWALLS (circa '79 yippe) RC-3 RS-3's (white) SVS 20-39CS Harman Kardon AVR 510 Hafler P505 (running bridged 800W/4 ohms for sub) ProMedia 4.2 v400 for PC Bedroom - KG4's or RF-3's (haven't decided yet) Harman Kardon AVR 20 MKII
  2. Troy - One of the reasons for the recommendation is that they have a rear port on the speakers. If you move them closer to the walls the bass will become more pronounced. The further away from walls the bass should be tighter because the speakers can breathe. I had my RF3's about 20" away from the walls and 9' apart with my listening postion about 11' away because that is where I thought they sounded best. The manual offers suggestions but really the only opinion that matters is yours. I spent several days and many movies before I decided on the final resting spot for my RF3's and I am going through the same process with the Cornwall's. Hope this helps :-) Laters, ------------------ Main System - CORNWALLS (circa '79 yippe) RC-3 RS-3's (white) SVS 20-39CS Harman Kardon AVR 510 Hafler P505 (running bridged 800W/4 ohms for sub) ProMedia 4.2 v400 for PC Bedroom - KG4's or RF-3's (haven't decided yet) Harman Kardon AVR 20 MKII
  3. Hehe no life would explain the time on the boards (humm and I have i-net access from work and I supposed to check i-net functionaly regulary as part of my job hehe). BTW I found out another joy of the Cornwalls this weekend and that would be listening at low levels. Yea I said it. Not ear shattering levels but low levels. I was cleaning the house late last night and being a good neighbor I had the stereo turned waaaayyy down. The volume was set to -40db and the speakers still had all the detail and clarity that they exhibt at much much louder levels. Sigh so much music so little time. ------------------ Main System - CORNWALLS (circa '79 yippe) RC-3 RS-3's (white) SVS 20-39CS Harman Kardon AVR 510 Hafler P505 (running bridged 800W/4 ohms for sub) ProMedia 4.2 v400 for PC Bedroom - KG4's or RF-3's (haven't decided yet) Harman Kardon AVR 20 MKII
  4. Dan-Oh - Yeah I think the Dead concert sound is what draws me to Klipsch. They are the closest to I have ever heard to the live Dead sound. Allen - That was funny story. I guess they didn't change much in the 10 years between '72 and '82 when I caught my first concert. I remember concerts like that (and ones when they never talked to the crowd also). I agree on their worst days the Dead could be difficult to listen too but if you ever got a chance to catch them when they were in a "tight" groove no one could touch them (my opinion of course :-) I have to say that I ran some Dave Brubeck and some Stan Getz through the system yesterday and the Cornwalls sounded equally awsome (and I swear I wasn't tripping on acid yesterday :-). I think that is the great thing about Klipsch speakers is that they are just awsome so everything sounds great played through them. ------------------ Main System - CORNWALLS (circa '79 yippe) RC-3 RS-3's (white) SVS 20-39CS Harman Kardon AVR 510 Hafler P505 (running bridged 800W/4 ohms for sub) ProMedia 4.2 v400 for PC Bedroom - KG4's or RF-3's (haven't decided yet) Harman Kardon AVR 20 MKII This message has been edited by eq_shadimar on 08-11-2001 at 10:13 PM
  5. Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I am going to give it a whirl. It doesn't sound like it would be too hard. Maybe I can use the platform idea with the SVS woofer too. I will make sure to let ya all know how it works out. Probably be a week or two thou. 7. BTW I got an e-mail about the equipment in the rack so I will post it in case anyone else cares. 8. Thanks for all the compliments!! I used a Sony Mavica MVC-FD51 and the imaging software I used is called Panorama Factory made by Smoky City Design. It did most of the hard work of the stiching and stuff then I did the "fade" of the surrounds. It is really great software for making shots like this. That shot was made up of 13 different pics. The SVS is about as tall as the RF3's were but it is just a little taller than the Cornwalls. When I can afford to get more wire (hehe) I am going to try and corner load it in the left rear corner of the room. With that Hafler pumping out 800 watts the room stays pretty warm. I may not even have to use the fireplace this winter :-) This is Texas after all Laters, ------------------ Main System - CORNWALLS (circa '79 yippe) RC-3 RS-3's (white) SVS 20-39CS Harman Kardon AVR 510 Hafler P505 (running bridged 800W/4 ohms for sub) ProMedia 4.2 v400 for PC Bedroom - KG4's or RF-3's (haven't decided yet) Harman Kardon AVR 20 MKII
  9. Ah ok well now that is more complex. Can you tell me what brand/model of DVD player you have? The cable you want from Radio Shack is a Left and Right RCA to stereo 1/8" adapter shown in the link below. http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F002%5F001%5F001%5F000&product%5Fid=42%2D2475 Now you have 2 choices. The first and easist would be to simply use one of the cables and take the normal L and R out of the DVD (not from the 5.1 outputs) and run it into the front input of the ProMedia's (you can do this via a switch box if you want to run a VCR or MP3 player or other sources into the ProMedia's also). This will supply full range signals to the ProMedia and then you can use the ProMedia's surround knob for the effect you like. In this case the DVD player would provide a downmixed 5.1 soundtrack in Dolby Surround to the ProMedia's and the ProMedia's will be doing all the surround effct and bass management. The second would be to take two pairs of the cables and do as you suggested and run the Front L/R to the front input on the ProMedia and the surround L/R to the rear input on the ProMedia's. If you do this you may not get any bass. It depends on the setup inside the DVD player. On mine I can tell it to use the 5.1 outputs and then it asks for the speaker setup. In my case I would tell it that I did not have a center channel or a subwoofer and it would route all the information to the other channels. If you have this option make sure to set all the speaker sizes to large (the ProMedia's will take care of routing the bass to the sub). Then what would happen is that the DVD player would decode the 5.1 mix, process any surround modes that you have selected and output that mix via the 5.1 outputs (in this case FL FR RL RR channels). I hope that makes sense. Tyr both and see with one sounds better. If not post again and we can take another stab at it. ------------------ Main System - CORNWALLS (circa '79 yippe) RC-3 RS-3's (white) SVS 20-39CS Harman Kardon AVR 510 Hafler P505 (running bridged 800W/4 ohms for sub) ProMedia 4.2 v400 for PC Bedroom - KG4's or RF-3's (haven't decided yet) Harman Kardon AVR 20 MKII
  10. Just another thought on Ray's excellent post is that you still will probably want to consider a filter or eq of some type to block high freq's to the subs. Again SVS sells a nice one that could go between your pre amp and the sub power amp. Or a simple crossover network on the speaker leads. Of course I could be talking out the side of my head too. The SVS tech support guys should be able to answer all your questions. I have a SVS woofer with my Cornwalls and it matches very well. I think you will be happy with it. Oh yeah I am jealous very jealous :-) Your setup must sound sweet. ------------------ Main System - CORNWALLS (circa '79 yippe) RC-3 RS-3's (white) SVS 20-39CS Harman Kardon AVR 510 Hafler P505 (running bridged 800W/4 ohms for sub) ProMedia 4.2 v400 for PC Bedroom - KG4's or RF-3's (haven't decided yet) Harman Kardon AVR 20 MKII
  11. Oh great I go through life perfectly happy with my little Radio Shack Minus 7's and then hear some brand new KG4's at the local HiFi store. So I save all my milk money and finally get them. Life is good for a long time. Then this DVD thingy comes around requiring surround sound and I put those Radio Shack 7's back into service (btw NEVER throw out any audio stuff casue ya never know...). Well I go and hear the RF3 series at the local HiFi store and I think dang I need another paper route and does the dog really need to eat? Well I finally get those and smiles all around..ah I think to myself this is living. I am a hifi god. This is what all those people mean by soundstage, tone, and openness. You would think I am done right? Nopers. I am helping out a friend with PC stuff and I am bragging 'bout my awsome system and he says "Klipsch?? I think Grandma has a some of those in the basement". Well gosh darnit those turned out to be the Cornwalls I have now. Once again I am HiFi god and life is good. Now darn it ya all are telling me to go get Heresy's and stuff. This needs to stop I am going crazy. You guys are just evil minions of Paul Klipsch forcing great sound on everyone. I say stop...stop it now...arrrggghhh (umm btw this is all tounge in cheek lest anyone think I am going crazy or worse actually serious). Well if you have made it this far you will interested in knowing that last night I went up into my sweltering 120 deg. attic to see if my celing has the proper bracing and support to hang Heresy's from it for the surrounds and center. It does!!!! Sighhhh give me another shot...I am hooked Laters, BTW I posted pics over in the odds and mods forum. ------------------ Main System - CORNWALLS (circa '79 yippe) RC-3 RS-3's (white) SVS 20-39CS Harman Kardon AVR 510 Hafler P505 (running bridged 800W/4 ohms for sub) ProMedia 4.2 v400 for PC Bedroom - KG4's or RF-3's (haven't decided yet) Harman Kardon AVR 20 MKII This message has been edited by eq_shadimar on 08-10-2001 at 01:58 PM
  12. If your DVD has regular RCA line level outs (I have never seen any that do not) you can certainly get a cable from Radio Shack and pipe the sound into your ProMedia's. The output is no different than what comes out of your PC with the exception of the type of connections. However be aware that you will only be getting stereo sound not dolby surround or 5.1 home theater sound. It will be a big improvement over the tv thou. I used to have my cable box hooked up to my Voodoo 3500 card and I used the PC for DVD's. With the ProMedia 4.2's and my 21" monitor I didn't need anything else. If you need a switch box to handle more inputs again look at Radio Shack and just get the cables to hook it all up. This is not a high end solution by any means buy it will give you much improved sound until you can get other equipment later on. Heck I didn't get all this neat stuff till recently hehe Hope that helps. If you have any more questions post em here. BTW I can't type need sleep :-) ------------------ Main System - CORNWALLS (circa '79 yippe) RC-3 RS-3's (white) SVS 20-39CS Harman Kardon AVR 510 Hafler P505 (running bridged 800W/4 ohms for sub) ProMedia 4.2 for PC Bedroom - KG4's or RF-3's (haven't decided yet) Harman Kardon AVR 20 MKII This message has been edited by eq_shadimar on 08-09-2001 at 11:28 PM
  13. Ahh Gil great ideas! I was thinking about cutting some 2X4's, making a frame and placing it just inside the riser and attaching the spikes to that frame. However I think I may do your idea. It seems that it may be more stable and it would be easier to fine tune the speakers too. Decisions decisions decisions. Anyone know of a place online to purchase spikes and such? ------------------ Main System - CORNWALLS (circa '79 yippe) RC-3 RS-3's (white) SVS 20-39CS Harman Kardon AVR 510 Hafler P505 (running bridged 800W/4 ohms for sub) ProMedia 4.1 for PC Bedroom - KG4's or RF-3's (haven't decided yet) Harman Kardon AVR 20 MKII
  14. Woohoo!!! Welcome to the Cornwall club (I hope I am allowed to do that...I just got mine yesterday hehe). I too love these speakers. 16. Very nice. I best the sound is simply awsome in there. Humm maybe if you got a set of Bose you could get some more room (ducking as assorted speaker parts fly past my head). 20. Hey guys - Here is my current Home Theater setup with my newly aquired Cornwalls and SVS Woofer. A couple of notes about the picture: The picture is a panoramic shot stiched together from several digital shots. That is why it looks "weird". I "faded" in the surrounds on each end of the picture. The position is mostly correct but remember they are approx 3' above the perspective of the rest of the pic. I hope you get the idea. The shot(s) were taken from the "master" positon :-) Any hoo hope ya all like it. Comments welcome ------------------ Main System - CORNWALLS (circa '79 yippe) RC-3 RS-3's (white) SVS 20-39CS Harman Kardon AVR 510 Hafler P505 (running bridged 800W/4 ohms for sub) ProMedia 4.1 for PC Bedroom - KG4's or RF-3's (haven't decided yet) Harman Kardon AVR 20 MKII
  21. Actually this is from yesterday but I posted it in the wrong section ******************** WOW WOW WOW. They sound awsome. And umm they are BIG hehe. It took all afternoon to wire up the Cornwalls, the SVS, and the Hafler amp. After everything was wired and tested I moved all the sofas and stuff out of the way and played around with the placement. I have settled on this placement for them. They are about 14'apart, slightly toed in (back corners 5" and 17" away from the wall). One is kinnda in a corner. The other is very close to a hallway. Not optimal but they sound great. The SVS (yeah I got that today too heheh woohoo) is inbetween them. I may try corner loading the sub after I get some more speaker wire. I tried pulling the Cornwalls out from the wall more (up to 3' away) but I didn't notice a big difference so I opted for more living space:-). I need to borrow a digital camera and post a pic or two. Time to listen. I rushed and put in my favorite Grateful Dead CD and the soundstage is awsome. The entire system is tight. I love the way you can hear EVERYTHING (btw I now know what the saying "this CD may reveal the diffencies of the orginal recording" means). I followed that with Police Ghost in the Machine, a great Delos recording of Beethoven's 6th (I could hear them plucking the strings), Led Zepplin 4, and the soundtrack from Blues Brothers 2000. I love the 5 disc changer :-) Every single one presented a nice wide soundstage and the detail was amazing. On to the DVD's. I rebalanced the system and the front settings where within 2dB of the settings for the RF3's. The Eagle's Hell Freezes Over disc awsome. I was there really I was. Saving Private Ryan. I was ducking as the bullets were flying around and the tanks and everything were awsome. I even watched SW EPI pod race sequence..very nice. I didn't notice a big problem with the RC3 and RS3's. I think everything is pretty well balanced. I may fool around with it if I can "borrow" some of the R*7 stuff. Now here is the thing. After getting the RF3's I knew that I would have to re-listen to all my music again. Well now I have to re-re-listen :-) I love the sound of the RF3's and they certainly are a awsome speaker (I plan on keeping them....somewhere). I think that the RF3's and Cornwall are very close for 5.1 movie watching (the Cornwalls still have an edge of course) but for pure 2 channel listening the Cornwalls blow the RF3's out of the water. I gotta scoot I have folks coming over tonight to hear everything Laters, ------------------ Main System - CORNWALLS (circa '79 yippe) RC-3 RS-3's (white) SVS 20-39CS Harman Kardon AVR 510 Hafler P505 (running bridged 800W/4 ohms for sub) ProMedia 4.1 for PC Bedroom - KG4's or RF-3's (haven't decided yet) Harman Kardon AVR 20 MKII This message has been edited by eq_shadimar on 08-09-2001 at 03:51 PM
  22. One of the things to remember about the CS Series from SVS is that they are unpowered and can therefore be used with older amp or receivers that are lying around. The orginal poster did not state if he had an amp to use but that should be taken into consideration. I just got my SVS 20-39CS yesterday and it sounds awsome. I am already saving up for a second one :-) I have not heard any of the other subs except for in a showroom so I can't comment on how they would compare in my setting. I picked up an old Hafler P505 amp (400W/channel/4 ohms or 800w/4 ohms bridged) for $200. This brings the total investment to $679. Not bad. If you are willing to look around on eBay or ask your friends (like I did....well ok beg would be more accurate) you can probably find a decent amp cheap to power the SVS unit. Either would be a great choice but if you are thinking about adding a second sub in the future and you have an amp you can use the SVS products will come out cheaper. ------------------ Main System - CORNWALLS (circa '79 yippe) RC-3 RS-3's (white) SVS 20-39CS Harman Kardon AVR 510 Hafler P505 (running bridged 800W/4 ohms for sub) ProMedia 4.1 for PC Bedroom - KG4's or RF-3's (haven't decided yet) Harman Kardon AVR 20 MKII
  23. I have a pair of '79 Cornwalls with the factory riser and they seem unstable on my carpeted floor. Has anyone put spikes on Cornwalls and what were the results? The other option I was thinking about was getting some sort of board to put underneath them. Again any opinions would be great. ------------------ Main System - CORNWALLS (circa '79 yippe) RC-3 RS-3's (white) SVS 20-39CS Harman Kardon AVR 510 Hafler P505 (running bridged 800W/4 ohms for sub) ProMedia 4.1 for PC Bedroom - KG4's or RF-3's (haven't decided yet) Harman Kardon AVR 20 MKII

I am playing in 2 channel mode right now on various music (Led Zep to Bach) and trying to tune them in. My listening/HT room is currently in shambles as I have moved everything out of the way execpt for the listening sofa :-) I figure this way I can place the Cornwalls in the best postiion and figure out the rest later.
