Any links to sellers of the community drivers?

Could I ask what the Radian 950 actually sounded like on the Eliptrac 400 without a tweeter? I was planning on using this combination myself and have exchanged emails with someone who consulted with Radian on the development of the 950 and I was told the Radian 950 'sports' a lot less artefacts, and other distortion components and will in some measurements look less impressive but it was also stated that the original proto-type had flat extension to 19kHz. Not sure which measurements he was referring to but not sure what to do now after seeing this thread as I was hoping to leave room for upgrade to Be diaphragm. Has anyone heard the Radian 950 on any other horn?

That's ok, thanks for your time. Bruce Rozenblit has answered some questions over on the Transcendent Sound forum re his Sub Buddy which I'll be able to use between DAC and amps. It will act as a high-pass filter to the SET amp and has outputs for subs with the plate amps having low pass filters. Seems like I have a result \(",)/

I thought I could use the natural roll off of the Tractrix to help set the crossover point to the TH and use only a low pass filter. Seems I was being a little optimistic! Ok, sorry for the confusion. I was looking at passive crossover initially so I could use a separate DAC but have since realised I could use the Hypex units and still use my DAC of choice. I want to use: TH from 20Hz (or so) to 90Hz, possibly with Crites woofer but possibly smaller drivers as the TH for these is massive Tractrix front horn from 90Hz to 500Hz, with Crites woofer Eliptrac 400 from 500Hz up, with Radian 950 The ALK ES500 will be between the two front horns, with SET amp powering these, and the Hypex unit is now looking promising for use between the Tractrix and TH, powering the TH. The Tractrix can be built for me by someone else with a talent for it. He already has a five way horn set-up using 15" drivers in TH (see http://www.hifiwigwam.com/showthread.php?54198-5-Way-horn-project-big-boy-system!). The reason I asked here about passive crossovers is due to the fact he (speedysteve) has an active system and I know what recommendations I'll get on there (with good reason no doubt). As I already have some passive parts I was trying to keep it that way but anything is possible at this point. Hope this makes sense, I've had no sleep yet and need to get to bed. Paul

Thanks for your replies Craig. The thing with the active filters like you suggest is that I wanted to use a different DAC. I know a lot of people are putting emphasis on room correction and ADC/DAC etc all in one place, but I wasn't planning on going down this route (at least not right now). I have been looking into this more (and had given up on this thread, lol) and thought a couple of hypex plate amps with built in filters could work for the tapped horns. I have a 211 SET amp, 30 Watts per channel, for the mid/tweeter do you think there would be any problem with this set-up?

I'm putting together some speakers which started out as a Cornscala project but has changed a bit since. I have ALK ES500 crossovers which I am still planning to use but I'm now thinking of adding a tapped horn below 90 or 100 Hz. I would like to use a passive crossover for this. Is there any way of doing this using some kind of generic crossover. I have Crites K33 clone woofers to use above 500 Hz and I'm thinking I may be able to use these in the tapped horns also. If no generic crossover will do, as I suspect is the case, where do I start with designing one? Edit: Crites woofers to be used UP TO 500Hz.

Well this is it. He says it isn't a copy but it seems to me that the man doth protest too much! Seems like a very high price to me, much like all his products.

Looking at this it seems they would both need to be crossed over under 500 Hz but my understanding is the La Scala crosses at 500, am I wrong?Could the Q-Pie be made to cross at 500 Hz? Paul

Yes, it will act like a bass reflex but at the same time a horn. In my opinion it is a win win. I would not own another pair of Lascala without the port mod. I tried both port lenths, 10"and 7", the 7 inch was the clear winner for me. Dave I've been planning on using La Scala bass bin with the port mod, and mentioned this to mdross1 over on DIY audio. I'm unsure due to the eq mentioned. I have ALK ES500 crossover networks and wasn't planning on using eq, would this be a bad idea? Also, if I turned them on their sides (to use a larger horn on top) would this be detrimental to the sound in any way? Paul

Thank you both DeanG and Wolfbane. It's just that on another forum it was said I may not be happy using a 4 Watt amp with the ES networks, though it was an OTL amp which does better with higher impedance speakers so this may have been why they advised this. Paul

I'm currently building 2-way cornscalas and have some ALK ES500 networks. Does anyone have any ideas on the power I am likely going to need to power them? I live in a small English house and will not be able to crank it up like some. Is there a way to calculate insertion loss? Paul

It seems I may have made a school boy error. I was going from the spec I found from Bob in a post in these forums. This is likely the spec of the woofer in free air, I hadn't thought of the cabinet boosting the efficiency. I know I can get a compression driver easily but wanted to try an 8" wide range driver to allow for future changes/experiments. Audio Nirvana Super 8 Neodymium seems like it may be closest.

I'm looking for a driver for the upper frequencies in a 2-way speaker, basically a Cornscala with an Oris horn. I'm initially going to use ALK ES500 crossovers and keep them external for future experiments. My question is does the efficiency need to be higher than the woofer? I'm using a Crites woofer which is 97dB 1w/1m. If I use a driver with lower than 97dB will it make my speaker too bass heavy?

You Americans certainly like your home theatre [] Mine will be 2 channel. I'm just starting out in this hobby and it's taken me an age to get any money to do it. Started Looking at Klipsch Reference for home theatre but saw the cornscala and decided to go DIY. When buying parts for a pair of cornscalas I've decided to add Oris horns into the mix. Wish I had more room and more money for surround sound but 2.0 will have to do for watching films []. Buying a whole system at once hits your wallet hard!

That's good to hear. I'm trying to choose between the Tang Band and Audio Nirvana but AN is more expensive to start with (for neodymium) and will cost me customs charges (to UK). Love the thread, and your speakers. You've pushed me towards the Oris horns! Thanks Paul

I'm looking at pulling the trigger on some Oris 250 horns in the near future and I'm looking at the Tang Band 1772. Any reason to go with the 1808 over the 1772? This will be used in a two way design.

Moray - I understand what you're saying about deciding between reference and heritage but I suppose the fact I've started this post tells me I've made my mind up anyway regarding DIY []. For some reason I was wanting confirmation from others that it's a good decision - a forum consensus. Smokarz - Thanks for your input - exactly the kind of thing I was hoping to hear. I am still waiting to hear on whether the Selenium drivers are 16 Ohm or not. If not, my only other option would be a 2 way Cornscala (Style D) using the Faital HF200 driver, as this driver is available for a decent price along with the 2380 horn. I would not mind this anyway as the Cornscala Style D is so appealing but could only fit 2 of these in my room (and only if I alter the room somewhat) and would need to try and come up with a smaller design for centre and surrounds, though there is not much scope for altering the dimensions when using a driver with a 2" throat. My 3rd question still remains - What would I need to look for in a woofer to use with a Crites crossover? I couldn't pay the charges for getting the Crites woofers to the UK. Would it be possible to substitute the Crites woofer and still use the same crossover? Paul
