  1. G'day, Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms Peter Gabriel - So - this whole album sounds amazing Supertramp - Crime of the century - 'School' has some great dynamics those are some of my favorites anyway
  2. I'm definitely in the plasma camp myself, but I can control the light in my room:) The series 8 Sammy is definitely the pick of the LED/LCDs though IMO. Great looking set and best time of year to buy it, especially at that price.
  3. G'day vandec54, I've had a few Marantz receivers now, and have got nothing but great things to say about them. I originally had the SR5004 paired with a Synergy F3 5.1 system and it sounded great. Very solid units, and conservatively rated on power especially when compared to most other a/v receivers. I believe they sound great when paired with Klipsch speakers, and have a very musical sound for 2ch listening as well as being incredibly dynamic for HT. I liked my old SR5004 so much that when it came time to upgrade when I bought my Reference speakers, I jumped on a new Marantz SR7005 and am very happy. Smiles all round everytime I turn it up. Highly recommended:)
  4. Thanks for the advice ricktate. I checked the jumpers but they seemed to be fine also. Called the dealer today and they are arranging a courier to drop a new one off and take the old one away, which is awesome. Now I play the waiting game...
  5. Hi All, I recently picked up a pair of RF-62II brand new from a dealer here in Down Under, and I think one of them is faulty! Got them home this afternoon, wired them up and before doing anything else ran the test tones through both to check that they were getting signal. Both are producing sound but one sounds completely different to the other, almost like it isn't getting a proper signal. I have checked speaker and wire polarity, both at speaker and amp. I even swapped speaker cables over and it still makes the same noise, almost sounds like when you have it wired up the wrong way. I have even swapped the cables on the amp, reversing left/right to see if it was the channel, but no luck. I'm pretty sure I have a dud, just wanted to be double sure before I send it back. Any ideas? Thanks
  6. Miles In The Sky is another great one, so many other greats already mentioned here, but I also just have to say Kind of Blue is not only the best jazz album I have ever heard, but possibly one of the greatest albums... ever. Chris Botti is another great jazz artist if you are looking to expand a little. Night Sessions (2001) is a great album of his to get started on, considering his biggest influence was Miles Davis, he should also be right up your alley. Midnight Without You and A Thousand Kisses Deep are other standouts.
  7. G'day, I know this isn't an ideal A/B comparison, but a friend of mine recently purchased the 684 tower speakers, and I went around there to help him set them up. To me, and my experience compared to other guys here is pretty limited, Klipsch and B&W are almost polar opposites. Where Klipsch are forward and upfront, B&W are laid back and a little more reserved. That doesn't make one better than the other, just different. I really liked the 684s for music, and they had fantastic mid-range response and were very smooth and full sounding, so much so that he doesn't need a subwoofer for general 2ch listening. Klipsch definitley has it over B&W for efficiency, so depending on what sort of receiver/amp you are considering for your second system, that may come into play for you also. In the end though, I'm a huge Klipsch fan and love the Klipsch sound, but the few B&W speakers I have heard have really impressed, so much so that when I look at a second system for my study later in the year, I'll definitley be considering B&W myself. If you can get a listen to the speakers you are interested in, or something similar in their range and like the sound, then I'd say dive right in:) Hopefully I've helped, and haven't just added further added to your indecision:) Magneto
  8. Hey there, I've had a lot of hands on experience with both the Yamaha 671 and the pioneer 921 as at my place of work we sell them:) I've only heard them on Klipsch f-30s but the difference was chalk and cheese. To me the pioneer sounded much more musical and had a warmer sound then the Yamaha. As in regards to movies, I also found the pioneer to be much more detailed when under a lot of pressure. One man's coffee is another man's tea, but hopefully this helps you a little:)
  9. Hey guys, My new Klipsch Reference speakers arrived yesterday (2 x RF-82 II, 1 x RC-62 II) and after setting them up and running a calibration, I am in love! A friend of mine near by has the RF-82 series 1 and an emotiva xpa-5 and I was thoroughly impressed with the sound, so I'm now looking at adding one to my system. In a previous post here I was seeking advice on a XPA-3 vs a marantz power amp but I ended up holding off and buying better speakers instead, so here I am again choosing a power amp! After reading alot of reviews and hearing my friends XPA-5, I've decided to go with what I like instead of what i can get cheap! The big question is, will I notice a difference going the xpa-3 over the xpa-5? I am 60% music, 40% movies in my setup so the music side of things is a little more important to me and I want that to reflect in my upgrade. My friends XPA-5 seems to drive alot more of a dynamic sound when listening to 2ch music. But from what I can gather from emotiva's website, they should almost be identical being both rated at 200 watts per ch. Or am I missing something? Cheers, EDIT: Iagain, I'm open to opinions if anyone thinks the there is something better then Emotiva
  10. Well I have certainly learnt a lot from all the valuable information you have all posted up, thanks to all for your input. After a lot of consideration and using a power calculator on Crown Audio's website, I've decided to go with the Marantz as it has more than enough power for the environment it will be living in, and I have always used Marantz gear and I love the sound. Also a friend of mine is a Marantz dealer and I got a ripper deal! I've posted my audio woes on here a few times and every time so many people have taken the time to share their wisdom with me and it's very much appreciated. Hopefully one day I can return the favor! Cheers,
  11. Hey guys, I'm in the market for a power amp and would love your opinions. The two I am currently considering are the Marantz MM7025 and the Emotiva xpa3. I really like the Emotiva but I'm worried they would be too powerful for my current setup as my F-30s are only rated at 150 watts and the XPA 3 is 200 watts, and a friend was saying I could damage my speaker if I put that much power into it. I know a few of you may think a power amp may be a bit excessive for Synergy range, but I am slowly upgrading to RF7 II in the near future and thought I'd start with an amp first! Also no one has been able to tell me specifically what the advantages are and if I will notice a difference with my current speakers. My current setup F-30 fronts C-20 centre S-20 surrounds Sub 12 Marantz Sr7005 receiver Thanks for your help,
  12. Hey all, Well it didn't take long, but the upgrade bug has bitten again:) After much debate and consideration I've managed to narrow it down to these two receivers to replace my old Marantz SR5004 that powers my F-30s, C-20, S-2s and Sub-12. Denon AVR-4311 http://tiny.cc/aqljx or Marantz SR7005 http://tiny.cc/fcx3k I know the audyssey program is a little more advanced on the Denon and it has a little more WPC, but I've heard so many good things about the Marantz and, I know alot of people debate if receiver brands have an individual sound, but I've always preferred the Marantz sound. Though I'm open to persuasion, so if anybody has heard both these receivers or had any experience in the past, please let me know your personal opinions:) Cheers,
  13. Thanks alot for all the input guys, everytime I log in here I learn something new about audio:) So what then is the advantage to running a poweramp or monoblock? I see alot of people in the forums here have both an av receiver and an amp as well in their setups. Is it worth doing with my current setup? And are the advantages more for home theatre or stereo listening?
  14. Thanks for the reply mate. I have set the fronts to Large/full band in my receiver and turned the sub off. When you say they did a fine job, you were happy to listen with no sub or still found that the subwoofer was better at the lower frequencies? If I add bass manually through the receivers tonal options is that going to help or just unaturally colour the sound? From what I've been told the F-30s had an improved crossover from the F-3s but shouldn't be a massive difference
  15. Hey guys, I've had a pair of F-30s as my fronts for a little while now and can't be happier with their performance, I was however, curious as to their performance without a subwoofer for music. I've seen a few posts on the forum from people saying they have reasonable bass performance without a sub for music, yet when I set my marantz to source direct the sound seems thin and not as full as when the sub is on. Is there anything I could be doing wrong? Or would adding a seperate amp to my system make much of a difference? Thanks for the help
