  1. Cask05, ears were burning and led me to EXACTLY this paragraph. You have a PM
  2. Sorry for the delayed response, job got really hectic last couple of days. Yes you are correct in assuming I'm Air Force. I'm a flight test engineer up at Edwards. Steaks/seafood is awesome. Giant fan of both. Will send you more info via PM and we can get this thing rolling!
  3. pwc, Regarding veneering, Greg can be a great resource (forum name greg928gts), he's very knowledgeable in that area. He can tweak a khorn to no end (see pic below). He's done some beautiful work IMO. Great info by WC as well. Regarding cherry Khorns...funny thing. I see that you're not far from me. I'm up in Lancaster, and bought a brand new set of cherry khorns earlier in the year that will be going to my father for his xmas/58th-60th bday present []. He has no idea, this is gonna be an AWESOME holiday season. He's wanted these for decades. As of now, however, they're sitting unopened, NIB in my living room. I have nothing to drive them with currently that would do them justice. I moved right before deploying and am still unpacking the house. My entire component setup is at my fathers home in TX. While deployed I had stuff stored/shipped to his home for guarenteed safe-keeping. Bottom line, I'm going to TX for leave throughout december and will be hauling these down to TX. I'll definitely be passing through that way. If you're interested, we can hook them up to what you've got and give you a taste of what you can expect with the most modern xovers/finish etc...and you can see what cherry khorns will look like in your home. Offer's open. Happy to help a fellow music-lover, and welcome to the forum! Dan
  4. It's been done. Picture taken from bhendrix's setup. Sound is said to be darn good. Not quite up to full jub-status on the bass portion but excellent nonetheless.
  5. Very interested in this as well as I'd like to do the same. Heresy rears.
  6. I have definitely underestimated the technical expertise of the forum members here. I may have framed my initial question differently had I known the knowledge-base that existed in this forum. I'm happy to delve into numbers if the discussion takes that route. To set the record straight, regarding headaches or simplicity of passive vice active networks, that is of no concern. Although my primary area of expertise is radar/avionics and engine acoustics, I've designed and programmed several linear circuits (and a TON of filters) in each of those areas (avionics particularly - think along the lines blocking certain frequencies and jamming capabilities). And after all, a crossover is just a filter. Give me a schematic, I can build/evaluate it. I know what to LOOK for from a good speaker/horn (or crossover) from an instramentation standpoint. I have actually built speakers before, but that was long ago as an undergrad (that class was fun!). 2 weeks and a very basic knowledge of what I was doing at the time didn't lead to the most stellar result. I was happy it made a sound. Never touched the subject thereafter until now. I've progressed since then and grown my knowledge-base considerably. So, if integrating different HF/LF systems evokes complexity, bring it on. I gladly accept this challenge. What I DO NOT KNOW, however, is what to listen for. I need to start bridging the gap between the two. What does the expected (ideal) response SOUND like? This is where I'm excited to evolve. I know the science, but not the art. Though this is my first pair of Khorns, I'm not unfamiliar with the sound. Outside of the trips to the audio shop with my father as a kid, I've got a couple of buddies with Khorn systems, although I've never heard a modified system. The two systems I've heard most are 78 Khorns and 89 Khorns (if memory serves me) respectively. For what it's worth, I absolutely loved them. The original question here was posed seeking knowledge, and you all have definitely deliverd thus far! The scope of the post has far exceeded my expectation. I've heard the suggestions to enjoy the factory sound, and believe me I will and I had no intention of implying it was insufficient. However, I'm a tweaker at heart, be it cars or speakers I'm always looking to dabble. The pursuit of knowledge doesn't stop. To that end: Thanks for the info/recommendation Mike. I read two of his papers last night. I like his writing style. I'm about to go fly here, but I have ordered the book. Surprisingly, Amazon ships to Afghanistan about as quickly as they do to California...Anyway, the process of returning state-side can take up to a week with all that's involved. Looks like I finally found a good way to pass the time. Looking forward to the book. Thank you for the recommendation.
  7. Thank you for the input thus far. I'm learning alot from the discussion alone. The wealth of knowledge and experience amazes me. I've got a lot of listening to do. I'm actually very familiar w/ the tech concepts. I work in the largest anechoic in the world back home, but deal mostly w/ aircraft engines and have ZERO experience with any these horns []. I've got tons of leave when I get back, and am thinking I'm going to need to start finding where these configurations exist. Should be some fun travels ahead. Call it a personal education. I'll take care of the room, but this has me very excited!!
  8. That's the same Front 3 I'll be running! All sitting in boxes in my garage waiting for me to get home. Good to see what I can expect, very cool.
  9. Islander, Understood, and thanks for the advice (that goes for everyone)! I will definitely enjoy my factory-direct sound. UPDATE: Roommate just informed me they arrived last night! They're sitting in my dining room (asking for pictures of the boxes I'm that excited). I'm looking forward to my extensive Klipsch education. Let the journey begin. As I said earlier, this was/is mostly for discussion's sake. Days between missions here don't allow for a whole lot of opportunity in the ways of liesure activities (you can only watch the same DVD so many times), and every time I read something that brings forth a question, I ask it here. Y'all have been awesome in your guidance/input. As always, I leave here a little wiser, and way more excited. Also, Coytee, thank you for that picture. That was exactly what I was searching for when I posed the original question. Can't wait to return home and give these bad boys a listen, and although I'll enjoy these I'll always be looking to improve. Afterall, the journey is half the fun!
  10. I've got a buddy in LA running a Khorn HT setup (he's using a cornwall center KL20s all around, I'm trying to get him on this forum!). It didn't even cross my mind to ask what he was running when i posted this. Sure enough, he's using an Anthem! Swears by it's 2-channel capacity as well (d2v). I've heard his system before. Anthem just jumped to the top of the list. []
  11. set up in my sys profile (but short version here): Current Source Material: Stanton ST-150 TT (Stage 1 Mod from Mapleshade) and Cambridge Audio 751BD (SACD, DVD-A) Amplification: Levinson No433 (before you shoot me for going SS [], I've heard it w/ the Khorn/LS2 combo and was floored - plenty warm sound). Outlaw 7500 amping surrounds/rears (cornscala/heresy IIIs). Already have the amp (was used in old KLF-30 HT) and heresy's, just waiting to get back to demo/pick up cornscalas (w/ Dave's fastrac midhorn!). Seller is holding them for me about 4 hrs from where I live. Should be a fun road-trip. *Note: I've also got an MC275...mixing, matching, demoing will be going on into the late hours the day I return. If that wins, then Levinson/outlaw combo will go and I'll pick up another couple 275s. Pre/pro...well, TBD at this point. Will be demoing as well. Right now looks like front-runner candidates are Anthem D2V (room correction said to be unbelievable), and Arcam FMJ av888. A great friend, whose ear I trust, actually uses his D2V as stereo preamp and won't shut up about the phono pre-stage. Says it's flawless for his horn-loaded 2 channel. Although I trust him, I will be demoing in my set-up, but that has me all sorts of excited, and increasingly impatient!!
  12. Well, a picture is worth a thousand words [] The K-402 is definitely in my future, but likely will just come w/ the Jubs. Jubs are definitely in my future (question of "when", not "if"), but that likely won't be until I move to next assignment. In my current assignment, I'm highly deployable. Will be gone again in Jan for another 6 month "vacation". While home, I will definitely enjoy the factory-direct sound of my Khorns. I wasn't knocking the stock sound but I'm always looking to improve. Plus, in my days off here between missions, there's not a whole lot to do, so I read (and what better material than this)? The notion just got the wheels turning so figured I'd get some input. It's great to hear the opinions on these, and I love to learn. Main motivation behind midhorn swap (minus improved sound) is that I want to use the K-400s to build a CornScala pair for my upstairs office [], Greg, that V-trac is lookin better and better (I've been reading the "demo impressions" thread all day). Gonna have to find a way to demo that. You may be hearing from me very soon. Thanks you for the input guys. As always, I'm coming away from this a little wiser, and WAY more excited to come home! Also, Tony, will need those recommended EQ filters for the Danley soon if you'd be so kind. Kit is already waiting in garage [] Loving your avs thread btw.
  13. I finally get a day off here! So I started reading... Just ordered new hertage line-up from factory about 6 weeks ago, and will have new khorns waiting for me (among others) when I get home. I've wanted these speakers forever, and chose them over the Jub as a way to connect with my father. He loved these growing up. Always used to tell me about them, and take me to Bjorn audio in san antonio (4 hr drive one way) as a kid just to listen. He'll be getting a pair from me for his 60th bday coming up (though he doesn't know it! ssshhhh). We both have perfect corners in our home so no issues there. Well, never one to leave well enough alone, I've already started looking into upgrades for my unopend, NIB khorns. I'm seeing that the biggest "area of improvement" (i won't call khorns deficient) seems to be mid-range, especially in comparison to the Jubs (which I will own when living situation settles down and can guarantee their own room). In the meantime, I plan to enjoy (and maybe enhance) my khorns. So purely hypothetical at this point...who am I kiddin I always have to tweak [] I think I've finally found a place where people can understand that here! Has anyone put the K-402 on the khorn bass bins? Does that eliminate need for tweeter? What other equipment would I need (crossovers) to make that a reality? Also researching some of Gregs horns on Volti audio (that Lavera is beautiful!). Understood I may be showing complete ignorance here and sure I'm missing some consideration, but just throwing options out and looking for some knowledge. That's why I'm here. Lay it on me!
  14. That covers it!! Family/vacation comes after about a month. Then I'm taking pretty much the second half of nov through the middle of jan off. Going to enjoy my toys, then coming back to the sandbox for another six months. []
  15. Any idea how the sound quality compares? Are they the same DACs and processing components? ...I'm hesitant as well given the extremely dynamic nature of the field, but I figure if I build around quality sound then the picture and movie stuff will come along when I'm ready. I'm not fully sold on 3D...or even remotely for that matter. Music/audio quality is priority number one, and I believe there are several options that can fulfill that for years to come. I definitely consider it an investment. Bed time here guys I've got a mission tomorrow but keep the dialogue goin I look forward to catching up when I return. Thanks again for the exchanges thus far. This forum is AWESOME! Completely reawakened my audio passion.
  16. Home is all over. Texas boy born and raised (McAllen), but currently flight test engineer at Edwards AFB (bout an hour north of LA), though I have some other training that makes me highly deployable. I'll be back here in the Middle East again next year, and want to enjoy my audio in between [] It's looking like DigitalEar in LA will let me swing an in-home demo so I'll get to audition w/ the mighty horns. Arcam seems to be another player with high reviews. I'm really excited to get home it's gonna make these next couple of missions long! But no worries I love what I do. All in due time. I'm going to have this entire set up new, in-box, waiting for me in my garage when I get home. Not gonna lie, I may shed a tear or two at the sight when that garage door swings open [] I'm sure this is an obvious answer, but any idea how the DACs in the Anthem compare to the Wolfson's in the BD751? Anyone in the area with a similar setup that wouldn't mind me having a listen? Of course the favor will be returned when I'm up and running!
  17. It's going in the demo queue. No guarentees but if I'm gonna do this right then it deserves a listen. avsforums touts it the best one-stop-shop for 2-channel and HT just short of the cost-no-object solutions. If i'm not satisfied then I'll eventually graduate to seperate 2 channel and HT setups. Just not there yet Thanks for the input. I appreciate all feedback, from everyone! Any other recommendations? Anyone?
  18. The ARC is what keeps me coming back to that. Currently I've got a pioneer elite vsx-47tx (only using the pre-out on it). It drove my old HT just fine (anchored by KLF-30s), but the upgrade bug hit with a vengeance here, and after 10 months deployed i'm ready to spoil myself a little, so upgraded to levinson amp and entirely new, all-heritage system, which will be anchored by khorns and ls2 center (still being built according to order status). Placement and correction is everything with those speakers I'm well-aware of that. I've got ideal corners for 'em, but I've read time and again that the room is the biggest limiting factor in any system. If this can really take the biggest strides to remove that, I may just have to take the plunge. I can't wait to demo will move pioneer and klfs upstairs to crank my rock and roll during workouts. Mike Lindsey what say you?!
  19. CECAA, How do you like your Anthem? The Anthem D2V isn't out of the question. Would like to avoid it if i can get comparable quality for cheaper. I know it won't be as good. Still trying to figure out where my point of diminishing returns is in price v/ performance. Hoping to demo some units in-home, but I love the discussion here. Always good to hear oppinions. Keep 'em coming!
  20. Thanks for the feedback thus far y'all! I can't see 3D being a big deal, but never know. My projector doesn't support 3D. May be nice to have in the future if I ever decide to go that route. Musicality is an absolute MUST! Sound is priority #1 (as I'm sure you can all relate []). Mustang, I'd be very interested in your review when you get your goodies, particularly in consideration to the phono section, still love my vinyl. congrats on that purchase by the way! At this point I would just need the pre. Power amps are already on-hand and I'm more than happy with my Levinson. I'm sure I'm showing my ignorance here, but does the single HDMI 1.4a cable compare (sound-wise) to using the 7.1 inputs?
  21. Hey all, Went all out for my HT. Currently deployed, but when I get home will be employing full heritage 7.1 setup (using every speaker in the heritage line). Only piece missing is a good pre/pro. Would like one w/ a good phono section as I do enjoy vinyl, but i also will be doing a lot of multi-channel music listening (SACD, DVD-A...etc...) I just ordered cambridge audio's 751bd to take care of that. Will also be using extensively for blu-ray use. Good luck getting me out of my theater room while i'm on leave. I know arcam and anthem make a good one, but I'd like to avoid that price range if possible. If not, c'est la vie. Just wondering what a good match for the heritage line will be? Would preferably want something w/ the HDMI goodies and lossless audio formats. Good DACs a MUST. My room is also very good w/ the corners so placement shouldn't be a problem, but would also prefer quality EQ software. Anyone here have experience w/ the Marantz av7005? Anyone know how that compares w/ integra products? Do any of these blend well w/ khorns and heritage products? Are there any others out there that i've just missed that you think might be a good fit? This pre/pro research has gotten me bogged down, so I'm turning to the experts! This forum has never steered me wrong, coming to you guys first. Any help is greatly appreciated. System info below. Thanks y'all! Any and all recommendations/opinions welcome. I'm here to learn! Dan --------------------------------------------------------------------- Mains: 2011 Khorns (Cherry) Center: 2011 LaScala 2 (Cherry) Surrounds: In the market for Cornwalls (WTB in CA – will pursue when I return) Rears: 2010 Heresy III (Cherry) Sub: Danley DTS – 10 Amps: Mark Levinson No 433 (Mains/Center), Outlaw 7500 (surrounds/rears), Behringer EP2500 (sub) BDP: Cambridge Audio 751BD Epson 8700UB w/ 106” Elite screen DirecTV HD/DVR (gotta have my Sunday Ticket!) Pre-pro: ? TBD
  22. Would definitely have to echo that. acousticsounddesign.com hooked me up with a great deal on new khorns/lascala combo. Mike Embers (manager) is GREAT to deal with. and FREE shipping []
  23. Oh the sub is more than ample...Danley DTS-10 []. Trust me that thing BOOMS on a whole other level! Very tight, very clean, very beautiful. Only missing piece is the surrounds...well, then the right pre/pro, but i'm researching that now. Will continue research on that end and demo a couple when I get home.
  24. Hey all, First off I love this forum. I've been following for awhile now and have learned so much. Soliciting opinions for the following set-up: Mains: 2011 Khorns - cherry (still haven't arrived yet) Center: 2011 LaScala 2 - cherry (same order) Now, for surrounds, I currently have 2 satin black KLF-30s and 2010 Heresy IIIs (cherry), for the rears. This is all waiting for me in my garage when I get home (still deployed to Afghanistan for another month). I can't wait to get home and assemble these. I still want a two-channel in the bedroom, so (all opinions welcome) should I get some good cornwalls (cherry) for the surrounds and move the KLF-30s upstairs, or move the heresy upstairs and have 4 KLF-30s. I kind of like the idea of a full heritage setup, but also think 4 KLFs would be pretty freakin cool. So I'll either end up getting another pair of 30s or a pair of cornwalls when I return. This is just for discussion's sake at this point. I'm interested in opinions.
