Should I Set My Speakers to Large or Small?
People always ask
this question. The answer is very simple. If you own a subwoofer that outputs
good bass sound, you should set all your speakers to SMALL. In general, if you
own a subwoofer, it may be wise to set all your speakers to small for several
reasons:- When there is an overlap of bass sound from the front speakers and the
subwoofer, you will get bloated and boomy bass. - A subwoofer can play low frequencies all the way down to 20Hz or lower. Even
relatively large front speakers cannot go that low. - The placement of a sub in a room is the primary factor in receiving good
bass sound. You cannot adjust the position of the front speakers and move them
to the side or back. - If the subwoofer and the front speakers play the same bass frequencies,
there will be a possibility of phase cancellation of certain bass frequencies. - Redirecting the bass to the subwoofer relieves the receiver/amplifier from
having to work on reproducing the low frequencies and this greatly improves the
headroom. - If you are using the Audyssey MultEQ calibration, you will get much better
bass performance because the MultEQ subwoofer filters have 8x higher resolution
than the filters for the other speakers.
difficulty with the word SMALL. They have spent good money on their front
speakers and get insulted when the AVR sets them to SMALL. Remember that this is
not a personal insult against you or your speakers. My Definitive Technology
front speakers have 15" built-in subwoofers with built-in 300 watt amplifiers.
In addition to those, I have six external subwoofers in my HT room. When I set
the front speakers to SMALL, the quality of the sound (both music and movies)
improves.
It is helpful to redefine the words SMALL and LARGE
to:
LARGE = The speakers are not Bass Managed.
SMALL = The speakers
are Bass Managed.

The LFE channel is a production channel used by movie makers and the likes for the very low frequencies. The subwoofer is a playback channel used at home for reproducing the LF's. The LFE channel in the avr should be set no lower than 120 since the movie makers put the LF's, 120Hz or less into that dedicated channel. Setting it lower, will cause a loss of some LF information/signal. Setting the sub x-o all the way up allows for bass management via the avr. With a x-o of 60 or 80 mean that the speakers don't have to produce LF below that point. Setting all speakers to small in the avr allows for good bass management. X-0 settings in the avr greater than 100, can become directional and the subwoofer can be localized. Any speaker that is set to Large will also playback the .1 or .2 LFE. I have my sub x-o all the way up, the speaker x-o at 80 and all speaker set to small. The sub cannot be localized the bass respone is better than having some speakers set to large and the overall bass volume is higher. I find this works well with speaker woofers 8in. or smaller.

I like using a Y-connector and connecting it to both sub inputs. It may yield you and extra 3-6 db and cut out RF and EM problems. They only cost around $4.00, so nothing to loose. Your pioneer should take care of all the settings for the sub and speakers. Just turn the x-o all the way up on the sub. Set all speakers to small in the avr and x-o in the avr around 120 which is recommended by Klipsch for the HD satellites. Then run auto MCACC, keep speaker settings. I started out using HD satellites for surrounds and then upgraded to regular Klipsch surrounds, that made a big difference in my HT. Good luck!

I have an Icon V setup and feel that it is a great system when setup correctly with a good avr/amp, subs and the room. The VB 15 has great sound and excellent stereo imaging. The VC 25 is also excellent as a center speaker, clear, dynamic and very capable as a center speaker and timber matched to the VB 15. When I first joined the forum, I thought about upgrading my speakers, but I like the Icon V setup so much, that I have not felt the need. This series is great with music and movies. Getting a second sub was a better upgrade for me than changing speakers.
-
Upgrading to larger speakers and a good sub or two will give more bang for the bucks in the long run. Someone mentioned blowing speakers with an amp. My surrounds are 50 RMS and 200 peak and I have no problem using them with an external amp rated 200/400 watts into 8/4 ohms which I have pushed to reference level. With the systems speakers set to small they never really get the low frequencies that will blow anything. The front heights don't get much below 250 Hz and the surrounds don't get much below 125 Hz with the avr doing the bass management and passing on the lower frequencies to the subs.

The HD 500 dose not get much ackownledgement on this forum for being a nice satellite ht system. I have one, and it's performance is awesome without the large footprint of some of the other systems. The HD 500's sub as been rock solid in my second HT setup.

Nice cables and nice camera to boot!

Thank for the links. I just downloaded the realtraps and Binks file and made a couple of disc to play with later. I don't have a clue on how to stop a slight rattle from my Frech doors off the family room. Felt pads will not work there.

I like that Ideal. I have a Wii and their fittness disc/games are pretty good for getting into shape. If a diet is needed the old Scarsdale diet book is still around and works great.

Very nice looking subs! Enjoy and report back.
-
Just super glue everything down and let the movies and music play!!!
LOL.
I wish I had those felt pads befor the sub vibrated a crystal vase off a shelf.

One of the best HT setup! I just like the look of everything.

You will hear a difference with the 82's over the 62's. The tabe is not a big deal if you are using autocalibration to setup your speakers. The pads for under the speaker placement will help with vibration.

Seeing the forrest is using multiple subwoofers for best bass performance if I am getting the article. Plus or minus the addition of room Tx's and judicious use of a parametric EQ.

Love her music and RIP!

Congratulations on the new pre-amp and enjoy.

Josh, I do not think you will get a night and day dfference with the Emotiva. It depends on if you will eventually move to all separtes. I personally like the avr/amp combo. You get more power and having the avr as a pre-amp works very well. Separate pre-amps last about as long as an avr before you want new features. I am vey happy with the pre-amp in my Pioneer.
-
Ever consider using the avr as a pre-amp and getting a 2 channel amp for stero and multichannel listening. I don't think it will make a night and day difference in the sound. Most of the current avr's have good processing so maybe the addition of a 2-5 channel amp is all that is needed to drive your 7's. I use my avr with two yamaha amp and am very pleased. Pre-amps last about as long as avr's for features and may need an upgrade around 5-6 years. A common rule of thumb is to get an amp 2-4 x the speakers RMS, even though most of us are not using that much in the power department.

Use Pay Pal if you buy the Marantz avr. if something funny happens in the deal, you can dispute it and Pay Pal will not turn over the money to the seller. A little hassel, but you will not loose your money.
-
Is there any role for a parametric EQ in the HT beside for the sub?
-
There is a nice Aragon 200/400 watts/ch.in the garage sale section.

You are blessed, Enjoy!

RF 63 HT system or the RF 83 for some reason have a special appeal to me. I like having 3 woofers for a little tighter bass and the 1.25 tweeter is a nice size to fill in the Hi's. I wish one of those system had a horn like the Icon V or W. They just look great!

I take it you are very happy with the new sub. You have put together a very nice system over this last year. Job well done!!
