  1. OK, I purchased an SVS PB12-Plus. Wow, I'm very pleased with this thing! I set the crossover to 60 Hz on my Fortes and I know I'm new to subs, but I just can't see ever "needing" any more output. My house is built very solidly, but things do shake if pushed even a little. I just did a quick and dirty set up last night to install it and my son and I watched the first 15 minutes or so of the latest Transformer movie. His smile was worth every penny. I'll spend more time this weekend reading the literature to see if there are any settings that need tweaked. Thanks again for all the comments and suggestions. Again I have no previous sub experience, but I do have 25 years of design engineering experience, and this thing is built very well and I'm completely pleased with my purchase.
  2. First of all thanks a million to all of you who have taken the time to reply. I'm an avid photographer and participate on a photo forum, and well .... let me just say that replies are not always civil to the less informed. Ironically I once called myself an audiophile, but the past 10 + years of following my son all over the South playing travel baseball have gotten me behind, at least with respect to HT, and all of your replies have been extremely helpful. I certainly intend to take your advice as to proper set up, but again I have no frame of reference for starting with a proper sub set up. I'm an engineer (mechanical) and am usually a pretty quick study on technical maters; so I just have to start reading! Thanks again and I'm leaning VERY strongly to the PB12-Plus but will call the gentleman at SVS as recommended by someone above before reaching a final decision. I have no doubt that there's a "better" sub out there, but I feel that one will get me close enough to where I want to be. I'm sure my son and his friends will be thrilled. I've learned this about myself and my hobbies; I sometimes spend way more than I need on a product that while great, really wasn't what I actually needed, or in some cases have the skill to properly appreciate. I have a $5K lens (300 mm f2.8) that mostly sits in my closet because it's too long a focal length for 95% of what I shoot (HS sports) since I use a dx format camera. It's a GREAT lens ........ but I'd have been better off getting the $1500 version (f4) AND a 24-70 f2.8 AND still have have a pile of money left to burn. Having said that, I have ZERO regrets buying that lens everytime I use it as I'm sure many of you feel about your uber sub purchases. Just too many hobbies on my part. And you know ..... that Nikon D4 that just got released ........... full frame ... so I can use my 300 f2.8 more ...... 11 frames a second .......... 4 times more sensitive than the human eye in low light ............ only $6K .............. yeah I need to save a little on a sub and just get close to perfection because I NEED that camera!! 3. Thanks Roger. OK so for the concrete. I was in a hurry when I posted my original message and might not have made it clear what I have. The room in my basement is a HT / game room / mini kitchen. We built our house as an ours and theirs kind of deal. The upstairs is ours ........ the downstairs belongs to the kids. I have a ping pong table, pool table, couches, and 55" Samsung LED and have had 60+ high school kids at the house the past few New Year's Eves. They're either keeping me young ....... or killing me trying to keep up. I'm still not sure which. Anyway, it's just the central part of the basement with Pergo flooring and the heaviest padding we could put under the laminate to prevent the noise from walking on it with hard sole shoes. I don't have any echo issues at all and frankly was more worried about the laminate and padding absorbing sound than the concrete being a concern. I have an Onkyo M504 Integra amp and that puppy with the Fortes will drive you out of there, but I'll be running the HT with an upper mid level Onkyo receiver. With all that's going on in that room, I do feel that I'm limited to one sub, even though 850 ft^2 seems fairly large. My wife is in an animal rescue group and fosters puppies and just happens to have a large crate in a corner next to my left Forte. I've aready informed her that the crate will have to be sacrificed for a sub very soon! Keith
  4. Sorry if I implied that I don't like bass or that quality set ups are somehow too much. I just don't like the fake bass that many think sounds great. I have no doubt that virtually no one on this forum falls into that category!! The bottom line is that I'm after accurate quality bass and absolutely agree that I can always turn the level down if I have more than I need. You can't fix too little for sure which is why I'm asking!
  5. I'm finally trying to finish my HT, mostly for my son as I really don't watch a lot of movies. I have Forte I mains and they sound pretty good on the deep end but of course we're missing the really low stuff. Ok so after reading a lot I finally thought I'd decided to get an SVS PB12-NSD, but am having second thoughts after conversing online with Jack from SVS. My HT room is in my basement (concrete floor with padded laminate flooring) and is pretty large (approx 850 ft^2 with 8' ceiling; so 6800 ft^3) and frankly I'm not looking for earth shaking crazy bass; just trying to get down around 20 Hz pretty cleanly. I'd read a few reviews of the PB12-NSD and thought it would be great bang for the buck in there, but Jack has me strongly considering the PB12-PLUS based purely on the size of my room. Again I'm not after crazy bass levels and I can't stand muddy, boomy bass that I hear in most people's setups. Frankly I can afford the Plus, it's just that I'm questioning whether I'll get anything out of it at moderate listening levels and have ZERO sub experience. I'd appreciate any feedback. Keith
  6. Sorry all. I thought I put this in the Sub forum but see that I messed up somehow. I'm reposting in that forum. Keith

  8. First off sorry for the delay in responding to everyone. Between Christmas and a project that I'm working on ..... well you know. Wow!! I'm very impressed with all of your excellent replies. I participate in a photography gear forum and my less than informed question would have received several negative replies within an hour. I got something from each of you and it has certainly helped me a lot. I'm a mechanical engineer and frankly a perfectionist at most things I do. This is bad in many ways because it has prevented me from finishing a HT setup. I just keep reading, and thinking, then a new product is released; so I start reading again.... well, again, you know. Anyway I've decided to just do something even if it isn't perfect. My set up is difficult for a few reasons. It's in the corner of a very large room in my basement but my son's bedroom door is only about 2 1/2' from the edge of the TV. This forces the mains pretty close together which I know isn't ideal. This room is approx 900 sq ft and was built for kids with pool and ping pong tables and an efficiency kitchen area. Surround placement will be difficult and I'm considering stands for them which can be moved into place just for movie watching. Yes I'll get a good sub but the center is still a problem for me. I do believe the Academy would be the best but frankly it's just too large even if I could find one. I have only an 8 1/2" tall spot below the TV to put it and I'm afraid that I'm almost forced into a ref series like the RC-62 II. Heck I even considered just buying the RF 7 II's but was very dissapointed after listening to them at the shop. They were very bright (Boston "Smokin") but it could have been the Yamaha receiver they had driving them. I've always been under the impression that Yamaha was not a good fit for Klipsch. My old faithful amp is an Onkyo M-504 Integra which I think is a much better match. They offered to let me bring in my amp and Fortes for an actual comparison and I just might do that. It would be fun to run a blind test to see what I really thought of them. I'm afraid that I've listened to those Fortes for so long now though (since 1987), that anything else will sound "wrong" to me. Anyway thanks again for your truly great responses. I'll have to tell how I got my Fortes when I get a little more time. I got to meet Colonel Paul in the process!! Great memory.
  9. OK so stupid question I'm sure ........ but I just have to ask. I have Forte I's and have finally after all these years given in to my son and agreed to build a good theater setup. I love the look of the newer generation floor speakers but just can't part with my Fortes; so they'll serve as the mains. Frankly I've not kept up with Klipsch for many years and stopped by the local rep and he recommends the RS-52 II for surrounds and the RC-62 II for the center channel to go with the Fortes. I see no reason for that not to be good advice, but just thought I'd run it by you guys. The mains will only be about 6' - 7' wide centered on the TV. Oh and I'm also thinking I can get by w/o a sub since the Fortes get to 32 Hz cleanly. I know they won't hit the low to mid 20's like a real sub, but should work at least for awhile. Comments?
