One warning though, after watching it on a 6 story tall screen with a 14,000 watt sound system, I don't care what kinda system you have at home - you will feel inferior!! I never go see the same film twice at the theatre, but I'll be going back soon for this one! mr. bob

khorn58 - if it helps to restore your faith in the stephens tru-sonic drivers, i've got a 40 year old pair in my vintage custom made khorns. i got them 16 years ago from their original owner, and i've been running them with a citation 22 amp (200 watts per side) amp with no problems. i periodically see them on ebay, but you have to watch for them all them time as they don't appear often. sorry, i'm not parting with mine...

even before i put the tv between the k-horns on the 16 ft wall, i had considerably less bass than when i had them on the 28 ft wall. having the tv between them on the 28 ft wall didn't effect the bass at all. so i don't think the tv is the problem with the bass, i think i'm getting cancellation just due to their proximity to each other. i also did not perceive good center channel dialogue on movies with just the k-horns, so i recently built a center channel speaker using a jbl 2397 wood horn with jbl 2441 2" driver, a pair of woofers from an rf-7, and an ev t-35 tweeter. really made my movies come to life. i know the woofers are not a perfect timbre match to the k-horns, but i've also got jbl 2" mid drivers and t-35s in the k-horns so from 500hz up they blend seamlessly enough that i'm happy with the overall sound. i'm still gonna try adding a subwoofer, as others have been successful with them and k-horns. adding another room to my house just is not in my near future budget!

i'm with johnny db. i have my khorns in a 16 X 28 room. the khorns are on the 16 ft wall, with a 65" hdtv between them. i previously had them on the 28 ft wall. WAY better bass on the 28 ft wall, an better overall sound, but was sitting too close to the big screen for the wife. so, i'm building a subwoofer...

i have jbl 375 2" drivers on community brh90 bi-radial fiberglass horns stuffed into my early 60's vintage khorns. i recently bought the single jbl 2397 wood CD horn mentioned in an previous post, and am using it in a center channel speaker with a jbl 2441 2" driver. i primarily wanted to try the 2397 due to its low profile (about 4" tall) because the idea of a 33" X 10" brh90 on top of the 65" tv was flunking on the WAF (wife approval factor) meter. its my first attempt at building a center speaker to go with the k-horns and i've only had it hooked up for about a week now, but so far i'm pretty happy with how it all sounds. the rest of the center setup is 2 k-1089 10" woofers (from the rf7), one on each side of the tv about a foot off the floor, and an EV t35 tweeter on top of the 2397, which is the same tweeter that's in the khorns. i'm sure i'll be tweaking it for months before i consider it a done...

this has probably gotten down to the tail of the dog, but if there are any left i'd like a pair for my early 60's vintage k-horns. will send the requested email after i type this. thanks much!! mr.bob

i'm using jbl 375s (2" drivers) on community brh90 fiberglass horns. they span the entire width of the cabinet, so i had to put the tweeters (ev t35) on top. i am very happy with their sound!! very detailed and accurate, with much wider sound stage than stock k-horns. the 375s have become pretty pricey, but i believe you can get a similar sound from jbl 2440 or 2441 2" drivers. if i remember correctly, the 2440 more resembles the 375's sound, and the 2441 has an extended high end compared to the other two. go to jblpro to get more info. mr bob

i've recently seen dvd versions of "pulse" on ebay. bringing big bucks at this point ($75+). i'll wait for the prices to get a little more reasonable myself.

speakerlab went chapter 11 about a decade ago. the company survived, but they no longer sell speaker kits or plans. they have just one store in seattle now. i think you can still get raw drivers and crossover parts, but they don't have near the selection they used to carry. mr. bob

doug - if your receiver will do it, you might want to consider turning off the center speaker ("phantom" mode - splits the center equally between the front left and right) and subwoofer (set fronts to "large"). at least until you can get quality replacements. this will eliminate some of your present weak links, and allow you to listen more carefully to the lascalas to make sure you like them before you build an entire system around them. mr.bob

i believe i'm seeing the compression of the small dish on my big screen. can't watch a hockey game on it - the puck disappears when its moving fast (which of course is most of the time) because the compression speed can't keep up with it. whenever something moves, i lose detail. it actually looks bettter on my ancient 25" console. i also have a c-band BUD (big ugly dish) system which is analog, but it gives a far clearer picture on the big screen. unfortunately, i can't get local channels on the BUD. doesn't sound like the HDTV small dish receiver offers any improvement in picture quality for non-HDTV pictures.

Try your local home improvement stores, too! The Home Depot here carries 10 gauge speaker wire on huge spools. They usually also have pieces they've pre-cut for sale cheap. I got a 250 foot piece of 10 gauge for a whooping $25, which was about 10% of what it would have normally cost!! ------------------ mr.bob

i have a question for you, rather than an answer. I have a 65" mitsubishi hdtv and the standard dish network receiver. the dish network picture absolutely sucks - VHS is almost better! like you, my progressive scan DVD picture is quite excellent. did you notice any improvement to non-hdtv programming using the hdtv receiver? ------------------ mr.bob

I have JBL 375s (2" drivers) mounted to Community BRH90 curved front bi-radial horns in my custom made 60's vintage K-horns. The 375 produces articulate details and sheer power, and the BRH90 disperses it everywhere. They measure 33" across by 11" high. I removed the front grill of my upper section and stuffed them in there - they span the entire cabinet! I then put the EV T-35 tweeters vertically (slanted back about 30 degrees) on the top of the cabinet towards the back so its voicecoil is above the 375's voicecoil. Centering the voicecoils like this vertically really helps with stereo imaging. Getting the tweeter off the front baffle and setting it back makes the mid/high transition more blended and smoother to my ears. These 2 changes made a night and day difference in my sound! ------------------ mr.bob

I had two (count 'em) SR-7200's shipped to me. Both were DOA!! The first one let out a full volume shotgun blast thru my left front speaker when I tried the test tone set-up! The second one, they plugged in and tested to make sure it worked before it was air expressed to me, and it also didn't survive shipping (it wouldn't even stay powered on). Granted, they were being shipped from Florida to Washington State, and they were both factory refurbished units. I spoke to a Marantz tech after the first one, and he explained that they only sample test some of the new units coming off the assembly line, but that all refurbished units are throughly tested. So the theory was that I had better odds of getting a good unit by buying refurbished. Thats still an unproven theory for me! After two failures, I gave up. If it can't survive shipping, I was concerned about how long it would last in my rack!! ------------------ mr.bob
