I think he meant sub crossover disabled and crossover on the receiver at 80 for the sub
-
All sounds good except for setting the avr to 0 for the sub channel. Let you avr decide that when it does the room correction. And if it's all the way negative after the results turn the sub down a notch or two and re run it. You basically want to know your sub volume is as high as it can be without the receiver adding any gain.

Damn I just can't win.

ah didn't know they couldn't be set individually. Well I would go with 70 myself just so you weren't sending unused frequencies to the center. And crossover the sub at 80 maybe 90. And the gain thing is just a suggestion. They say try to make sure you have it as high as possible without bottoming out your avr setting. I tried my sub all the way up and in my small room it was way too loud. I think it's about 89% with the gain in. The receiver on -15dbScrappy, her Yamaha does not have that capability. She sets them to small, and picks 1 frequency for everything. 60Hz seemed the best overall given the speakers she has.
As for the SVS advice, that is sage. You can have the YPAO bottom out on the gain though (I don't know what the - adjustment limits are for her unit), so perhaps 75% would be a bit safer.

Call Mike at acoustic sound design, heard that guy can rip a hell of a deal on packages over the phone. might be a worthy phone call if you wanted new new stuff w/ warranty

if i had your setup i would look at all your speakers lowest freq response. for the 83's they will play down to 29 hz. and your rc-64 down to 62 hz. and the rb-81 will play down to 46 hz. so if it were me i would set the all speakers to "small" crossover your fronts at around 60hz, center at 70, and rears at 70. that is pretty close to them all being matched, then cross your sub over at around 80-90 hz on the avr. that should give you a smooth blend with no boominess around that range. if all your stuff is set to large, you will just be straining your receiver to push them large speakers. no sense in having your towers try to play anything below 60 hz when you have a subwoofer in the mix IMHO. i also just recently purchased an svs subwoofer, and when i called them to see how they like it setup, they told me to run the gain as high as possible on subwoofer before you run your version of audyssey. i asked why they recommended that. this is what they said. if you set your gain at half, and something explodes in the soundtrack the loudest your subwoofer will play is half gain. so you are not seeing any of your subwoofers true potential. however if you set it higher and let your YPAO compensate and turn the subwoofer channel way down, if something ever explodes and the sub channel needs to play that loud it will have all the head room in the world. and what you get is a much more dynamic sound through the whole volume range. i was skeptical at first but followed his instructions as he asked, and holy cow!! what a difference that made. i feel like the whole time i have ever been in home theaters that i have had my stuff set up wrong. i have always had my sub at like half then compensated the on the AVR, cause i didnt want to "strain" the amp. however he explained to me that just cause the gain is up on the amp, that if is wasn't up playing super hard then it was not running hard. and i trust the guys there at svs cause subwoofer is what those guys do. so give that a try. might definitely be worth your while.

I'm pretty sure it's just full band and then when you change it to crossover at whatever they just become small. That's how my onkyo is.I don't remember my AVR having the 'small' setting, just crossover points...Is this normal with Onkyo or am I missing a setting in there somewhere?

I roll with grills on since I have a toddler running around with hot wheels in each hand but even my OCD side says replace it and have a nice paperweight. 42 bucks is cheap and I'm sure you could find a write up even without pics to explain how to do it. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

I knew that one was coming my way. Was hoping for a pic to follow. Anyone have any good leads on nice racks for a nice price
I googled for 'nice rack' images... good thing my kids weren't around at the time!
-
As much as I want to add a projector I have to old off till I am out of the military and move to a permanent home. I think I have decided for my other amp and some sort of rack. Might make one might buy one. Anyone have any good leads on nice racks for a nice price besides DIY. I am gonna hold off for the other sub and processor for now. Need more room and found out my audio stand is waaaaay over weight limit.

So, as you all can see I have a great subwoofer and a pretty good receiver too. But I am contemplating another sub or maybe the onkyo pr-sc5508. Any thoughts??

Well I own the svs pb-13ultra and all I can say is wow! It is awesome! However I think you should let us know what kind of space you have as everything mentioned above are pretty large and can look goddy in the wrong room.
With that being said when I looked around at subs I read tons of reviews, everyone seemed to say the rhythmik subs are great, I however think they are very unaatractive. And I read a few reviews of their customer service being not that great. Big minus points for me.
Then people were suggesting elemental designs. Read up a bunch on their stuff too. Once again very unimpressed with their looks, and also read that their customer service was not on par with their prices. Everyone recommends these over the more expensive svs. But when I started reading on them. There is zero negative reviews! And everyone preached about their customer service. Some called them to get a feel for them. Two hours later I got off the phone with Ed in sales and holy cow! What a nice conversation with a complete stranger about stereos in general. So for the extra money the beautiful finish and zero negative reviews that put them at the top of my list. They also have a great warranty service and a forty day in home trial, as well as an update period for a year if you decided to go with a pb-12, then 9 months later decide you want the big daddy pb-13 you just have to pay shipping and they I've you exactly what you payed for the pb-12. All food for thought. Don't rule them out because they are a little pricier.

well first i was going to say yes, get the towers. they will make a difference over your bookshelfs in output and looks. but since you mentioned moving that set to the bedroom, and moving to the refrence line, i think it would be a waste of money to get towers when bookshelves all around in the bedroom will be perfect. if i was you and you really wanted to upgrade anything, i would keep the future in mind. you could get rf towers now ( wouldn't be perfect timbre match). or you could add an amp that you want to drive your towers with once you get them. or another option is a second sub for this system now but once you move what you have now to the bedroom, it would be your primary subwoofer. not sure how big you are wanting to go in your room now, so its hard to make suggestions. plus WAF (wife acceptance factor) will play a part in the refrence line as they are not near as pretty as the furniture grade stuff. but all food for thought. if you have any more questions let us know, that what we are here for []

The Pioneer Elite SC 57 is a highly reguared amp.
that is alot of money....[]
a brand new emotiva umc-1 can be had for 500$. an xpa-2 and xpa-5 for an additional 1610$ with the sale that is going on right now. so for 10$ more i'll take the seperates with the headroom. but that's just my opinion [H]

i agree with massey on a lower receiver and an external amplifier. and aslo the prices you had for 82ii's being 1198 is msrp and can be had for a little over 900 from places like acoustic sound design and sound distibutors. look around and ask all the questions you can from the pro shoppers on here. we as a team can get you alot more bang for your buck []

Uh ok first off let me say that by running no center and letting your towers try and make up for that, you are missing out on a lot!! Center channel is number one speaker in home theater. 70% comes from it!! And as for your back speakers you should have crossovers in your receiver menu to set all your speakers differently. Where are you located at?
-
well sir congrats on the new sub purchase. if you havent had one before movies are going to be a whole new experience for you. with that being said, my personal preference is to set all your speakers to small. probably can do about 50 or 60 on the rf-82's, not sure what you have for center, and then i have my rs-42's set at 100 on the crossovers. then select sub yes, and i would probably cross it over around 80 if you set your towers at 50. that way they roll off towards each other and you get a good blend. you can always adjust as neccessay till you find what you want, cause in the end that is all that matters!! let us know how it turns out for you

http://www.onkyousa.com/warranty.cfmSame warranty on both. If it was only a $50 difference, I'd buy the new one.
according to this the warranty seems to only be half of a new one. unless that website has an extended warranty that i didn't see. not sure though
-
i shall be patient on this one as i have a perfectly good receiver right now. just wanting to know for the future. hoping the 5509 comes out soon so that 8 will go down in price. i would rather buy a new one than refurb.
-
i was going to do this before i bought my rf-63/64 combo. i had rf-82's before and moved a tower to the center to see how the front soudnstage sounded being all matching and at perfect matched heights....AMAZING!!! wish i could find a single rf-63 in cherry and i would do that in a heartbeat! If you want a vertical speaker, it would be better to purchase a floorstanding speaker that is designed to be in the vertical position.

hey guys, as the title reads, does anyone know of online retailers suck as ASD for klipsch stuff that discounts from msrp on onkyo processors?? i am thinking of buying a PR-SC5508 since i am moving to amps from emotiva now. any info would be great. thanks guys
-
and specific series of klipsch you are looking for? are you wanting used to get more bang for your buck? not sure how loud you are ever looking to play but if you arent looking for anything with tons of bass because of the addition of a sub later, you can get a new pair of rf-52's in that price range. i know the price online lists them at 365 range a piece, but a phone call can be made to Acoustic sound design or sound distributors, and a bargain can be worked out for prolly around 575 range(guessing) tax free delivered to your door. other wise for around that price used you can probably find a pair of rf-62's maybe even 82's IF you can find them locally, otherwise either pair shipped would put you over your budget unless you find a steam of a deal on them.
