  1. First off welcome to the forum!

So if right now you have the rs-42 as your surround back channels, I would suggest moving those to your sides to your surround channels. Then with the size of your front stage you could probably save a buck or two and go with the rb-51 if you can have them out from the wall a bit since they are rear ported. If they need to be flush I would go with the rb-61 as they are front ported and flush mount will not affect sound at all. I def would not even consider the rb-81 as those would probably out do your rf-62 in all reality. I would also try to find a used or new if you can but stay in your generation of reference speakers if at all possible. Good luck with your search!

    Steven

  2. You should def throw those on the back, you aren't even getting half your movie experience! it will sound just fine, till you get some back speakers. what are you trying to get for your rc-62? i have a buddy that just bought the rf-82's i used to have. he has an rc-52 right now, and i have read that the rc-62 is good step up. let me know if you can. pic looks good. i am ready to see an xpa-5 in my stand!! can't seem to find a used one anywhere right now. so i am trying to be patient.

  3. Thats awesome man!! I have been listening to things quiter at night and just love how much more dynamic range there is at low volume. Now the only, well not only but next thing to do is find you and rc-64 in black!! You should post a new pic so we an see that bad boy in your setup!!

  4. I say go with the bookshelves in a 5.1 if they will be behind you. Then down the road if you go 7.1 move the rb-61 to the 7.1 channels and get some rs series and put them right on the side of you. That's where they are designed to succeed.

  5. 1. If I want my receiver to do the decoding but not overlay a sound processor, like Dolby PL II, do I set my presets for "Straight Decode" or "Direct"?

If you want your receiver to do the decoding, you will need to set your bluray player to bitstream. I'm not familiar with Straight Decode but typically, "Direct" is used for 2ch listening as it disables your video processor and turns off your subwoofer. If your receiver shows PCM, the bluray player is doing the decoding (really doesn't matter which one does the processing).

    4. I notice a THX setup in this reciever. Can I take advantage of this without having THX certified speakers? Would it be any better than a normal setup?

The THX setup is merely test tones. Nothing fancy. I use an SPL meter to get my levels to match.

Direct on onkyo is similar to sony's AFD (auto format decode). i play everything in direct. if a dvd menu is recorded in 2 channel you get 2 channel. then when the movie starts, whatever audio format you pick in the menu settings is what your receiver will play. i like to listen to things as they were inteded to be listened to. if its an old movie in stereo i have no desire to try and simulate surround sound from it. but that just my preference. hope this helps a little with that.

and when you run audyssey, you can make whatever changes you deem necessary and then just leave them. i always turn my surrounds down a bit, and always end up tweaking the ft from my listening position as well. as for the thx settings, those are just recommended crossover settings. i keep my mains at 60 (rf-63) center at 70 (rc-64) and surrounds at 100 (rs-42) and sub stays on lfe set at 80 (pb13 ultra). hope this helps!!

  6. I think the rf-62 center provides a much better sound than the 52. i had the 52 with my rf-82's a few months ago and it just could not keep up. i think the 62's all the way across will sound much more seamless as well. and everyone is right you will need a sub. if you are looking for something that crazy low, you are gonna need something a little larger for that low extension. if you are wanting something smaller and packs a really good punch, i have a new rsw-10d in the box that i am trying to get rid of. if you are interested send me a message on here and i can give you any info you wanted to know about it.

let us know what you end up doing!!

and welcome to the forum, it will turn into an addiction if you aren't careful.[H]

  7. i have planet earth on blu-ray!! bought it when it came out for an outrageous price ( i think like 120$ ). it looks fantastic on blu-ray but whoevers voice it is always puts me to sleep. no matter what time of the day i watch it i have never made it through a whole episode.

  8. that's awesome man!! i am glad that i could some up my countless hours spent pondering about these amps and in which order i wanted them could be summed up in a few paragraphs. the xpa-5 will be great for you although i would say that you wont really need to bi-amp the fronts. i would just run all five of your speakers for now and run your 7.1's off the receiver then when you get the money down the road get the xpa-2 and voila! your up and running at full speed. plus it would be kind of a set back if you bi-amp them at 400 watts then go to the xpa-2 and back down to 300 watts. if you just run the 5 for all five channels for now, when you upgrade to the 2 at 300 watts it will be like xmas all over again!

either way that's awesome man you are gonna love it. hope you have a nice size shelf for it, cause it's a beast and very heavy!! and not sure if you want all black, but if you do just to let you know there are black trim pieces for it. i assumed they came with them. i can assure you they do not anymore if they ever did. you will have to order them.

let us know how you like it!!

  9. If you're looking for a three first and then a 4 channel you will definitely have to go with separate brands or steer away from emotiva all together. There a few guys on here the xpa-5/2 combo and I'm sure they would tell you that those rf-83's will love every bit of that xpa-2. And doing that will free up power on your avr so it will power center better. Or if you want the front three powered that bad spend the extra 100 get the xpa-5 and run the front three for now or five if you want and get the xpa-2 down the line. Just my opinion. Cause you sound pretty set on at least 200 watts. That's how I was but when you look at other pricier brands they are 200 till they run more than one channel power stars going down. And if you get a higher one that bumps to two hundred all channels driven then your talking 3,000+ range. Emotiva is def best bang for your buck new for sure. And they have a pretty warm sound to them.

  10. Looks like they have the same sub amp supplier as KlipschZip it!.

don't say that! LOL he said it does happen, but not very often. oh well they are already have a new one out in the mail for me so it will be fixed soon. and viper, this sub is amazing. brings a whole new element to my theater. movies are all new to me coming from a sub that only plays to 24 hz. plus this thing is BIG and BEAUTIFUL!!

  11. Elite,

it just so happens i have a couple buddies that are electricians as well as i am close to the same field. we talked about it and have came to the conclusion that is was most likely the amp just took a crap. svs said it doesnt happen very often but it does happen. i knew a different outlet wouldn't be on a different circuit i just wanted to try straight to the wall instead of through my line conditioner as there were no more plug ins in that location. i do plan of re labeling my crappy breaker box. gotta love military housing! [N]

i'm hoping when the other amp gets here that this house just doesnt have too old of wiring that i can't run all this stuff, it would break my heart to pack the emotiva up. it sounds soooo good!!

  12. Hello,
I just bought an XPA-2 and hooked it to my rf-63's and although not a night and day difference in my small (10x11) room, what i do notice it that my mids and highs have really opened up and there is much more musical seperation. and the other big thing i was looking for was more dynamics at a lower volume. and that is defintely there now!! they sound just as dynamic at turn on volume, as they do when i have them up towards reference levels. i agree with elite as the xpa-2/5 would probably be the way to go. i added up every possible combo as far as powering seven speakers in the long run. and you spend just a little more to have the 300 for your fronts and 200 the rest of the way around. i wanted the xpa-3 cause it was in my price range brand new. that means i would have had to buy a xpa-5 and had one channel unused, or buy another xpa-3 along with the upa-1 mono to have 7 channels. so what i did was go the used route and saved some moeny and found a sweet local deal from an older gentleman so i knew it was not ran hard as he listened to classic at a very low volume, so i knew i was getting a well taken care of amp for the money. plus still have 4 years left on the warranty. plan on buying the xpa-5 as soon as i find another sweet deal!! hope this is a little food for thought for you!

  13. So yesterday i puchased a emotiva xpa-2 and hooked it all up and ran some 2 channel for about an hour. all was good. love it so far. and then today i go up and throw in a movie, and watching it with my son, notice there is no bass coming from the sub. i walk over to it and notice the cone "clicking". it is just barely moving and making a clicking sound. so i unhook the rca from the lfe input, and it is still doing it. so then i try unplugging it thinking maybe there is too much plugged into that outlet and i try an outlet on another wall. plug it is, turn it on and pop!! blows my breakers i the whole house!! go down to the breaker box, and not a single thing was tripped. reset it all anyways. everything turns back on, go up still no sub. call ed at svs, tells me about the trey that holds the fuses under the plug input, change that out, no luck. is there anything i can do to be able to run this much gear in this room. this is old military housing, i am not sure what breaker is what in the box cause nothing is labeled. i dont even feel like i have that much stuff plugged in, but i guess i do. can anyone help me out with this or am i just gonna have to box up the emotiva and put it in the closet till i move into my own house and have a dedicated theater room with two breakers in the room?

  14. I have only had a few other brands besides klipsch in the sub world, but i have read alot on here that klipsch does not excel in subwoofers quite the same as dedicated subwoofer companies. i just bought an svs recently and am amazed by its performance. if around 850 is your budget i would say there are better options out there for the price unless you are dead set on klipsch. are you more wanting it for home theater or music?

  15. Hopefully your stand will fit the beast xpa2, when I got mine I failed to account for it being nearly 8" tall, ended up settling for a audio rack until I got my new stand built

I should be good. The onkyo 805 is 8.5" i think. and it still have about an inch and a half of breathing room under the center shelf. and im gonna rearrange it so that the amp and the receiver are on opposing sides so they will have a little extra room to breathe and the less expensive stuff in the middle (dvd, cable box, ps3).

I wish i could find what exact model my bell'o stand is so i could look up the weight limits. cause it's got about 115 for the tv on tope. the rc-64 on the center shelf and then i would say at least 170 on the bottom.

  16. If your system is in a small room, adding the XPA-2 may not make that much a difference considering the fact that the amp section of your behemoth Onkyo TX-SR805 is so potent. In a midsize to large room is where the XPA-2 will be noticed most IMO. It will free up some of the 805's power so that dialog through your center channel will be more open and detailed.

    Bill

Bill that is what I'm going for! I was gonna get the three channel but got a great deal on this one. And with the extra power I'm looking for more dynamics at a lower volume. And I'm buying all this stuff now while I have a steady paycheck in the military as that is what the wife ordered me to do. After the military I'm done for a while. So I'm planning ahead, for the larger room and higher volumes!
  17. Even though I have never heard this setup, I have heard nothing but good things about it. It is hard to get a more timbre matched front soundstage than this THX system. As mentioned before, this setup is definitely geared more for a dedicated HT room. If I had a HT room with an acoustically transparent screen, this would be the way I would want to go.

    Bill

Bill if I had a transparent screen man I would love to rock rf-63's all the way around!! I love these things more and more everyday!
  18. Josh I have never heard the 62's but I can tell you that I spend ALOT of time reading about speakers. And I can say that if your 62's are paid for then the 82's are not going to be that much of an upgrade. Now if you could sell your 62's for say 4-5 hundred I would def say the 63's would be worth the upgrade. I have found lots for right at a grand. However 63's have an upgraded tweeter so they wouldn't be seamless with the center 62 anymore. But hey perfect reason to find a 64, and let me just say that it is amazing!!!

I love my new front sound stage. The suttle details you can hear now over the 82/52 setup is just night and day.

  19. Elite thanks for your input brother!!!

Without demeaning the Onkyo M-282, it is a little more than a consumer grade stereo amp. It was designed for your average consumer to move into seperates without much $$$. I think one of it's intended uses is to power a second zone when the amps in a multichannel receiver are all used up. It is also an amp that can be used in a humble 2-channel setup without very demanding power hungry speakers. It may be used to power your rear surrounds so you can use those channels to "bi-amp" your fronts.

Just a tidbit of info for you to drink in, both the RF-63 and the RC-64 do have some sub 4ohm dips in the frequency range and in some instances less than 3 ohms(RC-64=2.8ohms at 180Hz,S&V test 11/06).

To sum it up, the M-282 is not too shabby(for the price) but you could find a much better quality amp on the used market that will really bring your speakers to life, with or without bi-amping/bi-wiring.

If you insist on biamping, do it with superior quality amplification. Check this out.

    Bill

Bill, the ohm dip is all I needed to hear. Those amps would just not suffice for my listening habits. I'll stay with the Emo's most likely, as used speakers I could, but amps I really think I want new.
