  1. I'm sure the experts will chime in, but from my own limited knowledge and experience, none of the components except the board and terminal strip will be useful, since the values of the caps, inductors, and resistors are going to be different in a 2-way set-up vs. 3-way
  2. Gosh, those went fast... I've been checking out most of the Missouri CL's daily for a few weeks to find a deal like this. Congrats, and let us know how they work for you!
  3. >sigh Hopefully the coward(s) responsible will be discovered and brought to justice quickly. Thoughts and condolences to everyone impacted and injured.
  4. Well, theres an obvious sensitivity difference. I think I prefer the sound of the exponential horn to the tractrix horn. I like the midbass and midrange of the Chorus better. What is it about the sound of the exponential horn that you like over the Forte II? The reason I am curious is because I am contemplating a home-built center to place between my Forte I's, but with the Forte II midrange horn, for wider dispersion...
  5. Hey, no problem at all... If I decide to proceed, it will likely take a while to collect all of the components. I will update ( and have plenty of questions) as I go along...
  6. I pop 4-oz Detroit Popcorn Company Pouch Paks in my little Old-Tyme popcorn cart-on-wheels, and top it liberally with clarified real butter. This is the only accepted movie snack, besides the occasional vanilla ice cream with Ghirardelli Chocolate Sauce and real whipped cream, or a nice espresso drink.
  7. Check out the Dayton craigslist... There is a garage sale Friday and Saturday advertising "Klipsch horn speakers in 5' cabinets". I am about a thousand miles away, but it would seem to be worth checking out if I were within an hour drive...
  8. How would you characterize the difference in sound between the Chorus and your old Forte II's?
  9. My current center is an Academy, and I have been mostly happy with it between my Forte mains, but the timbre - while being the best of those I have tried - is not a perfect match to the Fortes; also, recent placement of the Academy on the shelf under my new 70" Sharp display has decreased the room-filling capabilities of the Academy, and that is why I decided to "tinker". I am not proposing doing anything different with or to my Fortes; I merely used them in the way described in my OP to come close to hearing what a custom center made with Forte components would sound like, and if it would work with a single Forte crossover. It has been my observation that the center channel in a home theater environment is generally the most slighted and least appreciated aspect of assemblage; I know it has its roots in the difficulty presented by there just being no good position to place a full-range speaker, due to the placement of the display... I have heard varying percentages attributed to the sonic responsibilities of the center channel in most film soundtracks, and I would err on the larger side of the scale - at least 75% of what you hear, in my estimation, comes from the center, and I really think it is more like 80%. What I have in mind is to place the Forte-inspired center on a shelf above my display, angled slightly downward towards the heads of seated listeners/viewers. I would have to build the enclosure myself (or adapt an existing enclosure larger than the Forte cabinet), because the proposed drivers will not all fit in the Forte box.
  10. I recently had the notion to try a "Super-Center" by placing one of my Fortes on its side on a platform that placed the drivers in alignment with the woofer of my other Forte; I disconnected the cable from the woofer in the upright speaker and connected it to the woofer output terminal of the crossover of sideways speaker, making a classic center channel with the two woofers on either end, and midrange and tweeter between them. The sound was great - very distinct and clear (perhaps a little "boomy", either because of the extra resonance from the woofer-only cabinet, or just from too much unbalanced woofage), but very in-keeping with the Forte voicing and timbre. I am mulling over building a box with this set-up, but with the midrange and tweeter placed horizontally for wider dispersion (I have also considered using the Tractrix-style horn of the Forte II, but am not certain the match will be as good). I have proposed similar builds in the past, and had forum members remark that it might put too much strain on the amplifier, due to lowering the impedence because of the two woofers, but there did not seem to be any trouble when I tried it recently; also, I am considering "tri-amping" the whole thing, with separate amps for the two woofers, and for the tweeter/midrange, but using my three-channel amp). My other concern is balancing out the bass output with the extra woofer; not sure how to execute this in the crossover, but if I proceed, I'm sure there will be those on the forum who can offer technical advice. The reason I was curious about the Forte II woofers was because I have noticed some for sale here and there...
  11. I am contemplating a custom- built center to use with my Forte I mains, and was wondering if I would notice any difference if I used the woofers from a Forte II (K-25) instead of the Forte I K-23's? The only difference I can infer is from the higher crossover point of the Forte I (700 Hz vs. 650 Hz)...
  12. Ah, another scientist in our midst... nice to know there are others out there []
  13. I thought this thread was about a movie? The Bible is fiction?, I always heard it was gospel, thanks for heads up. I'll be sure to tell everyone I know you said so....I know they'll rethink the whole notion, lol. I was almost convinced Jesus really walked the Earth, I feel like such a sucker....... Watching Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter may also leave some with the impression that Lincoln walked the Earth, but also with the impression that he hunted vampires. As for Daddy Dee's two cited "non-fiction" titles, I have read the former, and am familiar with the latter, and can say with some veracity that there is a good deal of speculation and unconfirmed conclusions in both works.
  14. I would agree, except I find non-fiction much more satisfying these days...
  15. The US topper was pathetic - The Singing Nun by the Dominique's. I'm going with the UK's I Wanna Hold Your Hand. If you don't know the artist name, then you should not be a member of this forum
  16. Again, you have nothing about which to apologize, and please do not let anyone spur you to think otherwise.
  17. To answer your question: Yes, you did good... It is entirely the sellers' responsibility to be aware of the worth of what he or she is selling. This is not an issue like a few dollars being spent for something worth thousands or millions... It is not your responsibility to educate a seller on the worth of their wares. This fellow ended up with some cash for something he had apparently not even paid for, and for which the general public would consider to have long since depreciated in value... It is a select few of us who appreciate the value of old Klipsch speakers, and to many of the general public, they would be an unsightly burden to be added to their belongings. Please do not think you have done wrong or screwed this person... He is unburdened of something which he clearly did not want to deal with, and you are uniquely positioned to enjoy the benefits of your good fortune; besides, from your description, you likely have work and more cash outlay on cabinet cosmetics to make these presentable. You did good, and don't let anyone convince you otherwise.
  18. It is a good and (sadly) rare thing to find an actual person to talk to in a business' customer support; navigating the endless system of menus and ending up with a computer voice telling you "bye" is the antithesis of customer support...
  19. The center is sloped upward as much as possible without risking interference with the top support bar of the display shelf (I purchased it online, using the dimensions listed for the product description, not visualizing that the heighth of that bottom shelf was from the base to the top shelf, with the width of the top support bar dropping down a few inches into the listed space); therefore, the woofers of my center are just barely clearing that top support bar; further sloping of the speaker would result in sound refection off of it. NO tone controls are being used; I am a firm believer in sending as flat and full a response as possible to all speakers - I do have flexibility in tweaking the frequency response sent to each speaker group, and have adjusted the signal to the center a little by ear, to reduce a little of the "boxiness" by sending a little more of the high frequencies to the subs. My HT processor came out just before ARC became available, so I do not have the fine-tuning available with the likes of it or MultEQxt. Another solution I have considered, given my placement restrictions, is intercepting the center signal between processor and amp, and using a subwoofer crossover to pull the frequencies in the 40-80 Hz range to a dedicated sub for the center, placed either behind the display shelf or at one of the listener corners... my other two subs are tuned pretty low, and I am thinking I would get more clarity in the mid-sub bass by trying this option. I have read that odd mnumbers of subs after 2 are not good, but I have also read of success with mid-subs for the task I have just described. My biggest fear with this would be slight signal lag to the center from extra processing. This has not been a huge annoyance, just part of my ears' seemingly endless quest to be 100% satisfied - probably not possible, given the plethora of mediocre source material...
  20. Carl, Do you eq your subs in any way? I've been doing this recently with the DEQ2496's parametric eq (subs only) with very good results. It makes integrating the subs much easier. The only thing I don't like about it is that I didn't do this sooner...like years ago. My living foom had a HUGE peak around 50-55Hz. It was cool when you watched a movie with gunshots as that frequency was really hot. It wasn't very good with music though. I used a BFD to knock down the peaks, then ran it through my pre/pro's room correction software. EDIT, I was referring to my HT. My Lascala/sub combo hasn't been eq'd but sounds really good as it is. Sometimes you get lucky. Your Anthem-QSC stack is ridiculous, and I mean that in a good way... I have the little brother to your D2 (the AVM20), and I love it. When I was getting the best sound from my Fortes, I had a McCormack DNA-1 Deluxe amp and TLC-1 preamp - no DSP for the main signal, and used a second output from the passive preamp to run through a subwoofer amp set at around 40 Hz. So the Fortes were responsible for everything down to around 40, and had assistance- carefully balanced with test signals, and with minimal processing - from a Hsu 1220HO sub. The result was the nearest I have come to a live sound in the house. Foolishly, I dumped all of that to go HT, which sounds great for film material, but the extra processing - even with the quality of the Anthem - takes away some of the immediacy from recordings. Someday, if my financial fortunes improve, I would love to have a separate music-only system, and it would rely on subwoofage to assist with that bottom octave down to which even the best Klipsch has to offer does not quite cover.
  21. Another angle, with the DIY Sonosub in the corner...
  22. Thanks; I built it with 13-ply Baltic Birch, the driver is a 15" Tempest-X, tuned to 16 Hz - definitely optimized for HT. It's being powered by one of the 750-watt channels of a QSC RMX2450 amp. The other channel is driving the other sub that didn't make it into the picture - an 18" Sonosub with a Dayton Titanic MkIII, also tuned to 16 Hz. I don't have any complaints about my bass SPL [] ...which might be contributing to my disappointment with the Academy output.
